Open iTunes Library on another computer

My entire music library is on my external hard drive. I'm going away for the summber and obviously I can't take my iMac with me. But I've got PB. And, I'd like to open my music library in my PB exactly like I do on my iMac, i.e. same play count, same import date, etc... The reason I ask this is because the only way I know how to open the music library on another computer, is to import the entire library again, which will not retain all that information (play count, etc). So, how do I do that?

Here's the trick. On your PB, Rename your user/music/iTunes folder (something like iTunesb or anything similar). When you launch iTunes, it will freak out and tell you that it can't find your music library and ask you to "point to" the correct location. From there simply navigate to your iTunes folder on your ext. drive and bingo..... Of course, this means that you must have the drive mounted whenever you launch iTunes. Also, you will have to "authorize" the PB to play your purchased music.

  • Putting iTunes Library on another computer

Currently I have my iTunes setup on my windows xp laptop but I just got a new desktop PC which has windows Vista Home Premium.
I would like to take the same music (itunes store purchases included) that is on the laptop and put it on the desktop. Would all I need to do is backup my Library/music in iTunes that's on the laptop and import it into iTunes on the desktop?

Probably the most straightforward way to get iTunes onto your new computer is to network it with the old one and copy your iTunes folder across. This works fine if you have been using iTunes to completely manage your music and all your songs are in iTunes Music not in different folders. You can also use this method with an external hard drive, you drag the folder from the old computer to the external drive and then from the drive to the new computer.
Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the same location on the new computer. This has to be the exact same place, on a PC this is \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\. When you open iTunes on the new computer it will be the same as on the original one Songs, Playlists, Play Counts, Ratings etc. When I moved iTunes a while ago for my daughter I was also using the same version of iTunes, not sure how important that is but it's probably worth keeping them the same.

  • How to copy backup of iTunes library onto another computer?

My primary laptop with my music library just crashed. I have a older laptop that I plan to use while I get the other repaired. I have a complete backup of my music library on external drive. After installing iTunes on the spare laptop I copied the backup music library to the iTunes music folder. However, when I start itunes, nothing shows up in iTunes. This has probably been discussed but several searches have not found how to recover this. Does anyone know what the process is?
    Thanks

If you want to backup your iPod onto another computer you can download a program called "iPod to computer transfer" at the following URL:

  • How to open itunes library on different computer?

    Hello all.
I have my itunes library on an ext HD. I was running it on a old, pre-intel G5.  I tunes version is very old.  OS is old. Computer has crashed, I cannot provide versions numbers, or more machine info.
I would like to open the itunes library on ext hd on a different computer (mac mini) running itunes 10.
I have tried to point itunes to itunes folder on hard drive.  itunes recognizes the new location (change itunes location in preferences)  However, when I restart itunes, my ext library itunes files do not show.
    Please advise.
    GC

Those boxes are checked like in the screen cap.  A lot of the exclaimation points went away, but it's now not recognizing podcasts I already had in my library. I looks like to would have to re-download all of them.  Some regular music tunes still are not found. Need to manually locate them
I think the checkbox setting applies to all files that are downloaded from here on out, but not the old stuff.
Years ago, I had to manually locate all the files and it was a major PITA.  I think there were never organized properly in the first place, so the problem continues to haunt me.

  • Transferring my current iTunes library onto another computer

How exactly do I transfer my current iTunes library (a 4gb file) onto another computer, my new computer, without using a USB drive of which I do not have?

Well, the article did mention that I either needed to copy the iTunes library to CD or DVD or I could somehow put it on to my iPod by enabling disk use (a very long process) am I required to download iTunes 7 on my old computer in order to do this and if I do download it, will it automatically transfer all my music and playlists aswell?

  • Importing itunes library from another computer

I copied my itunes library to an external hard drive so I could put on a new computer.  When I try to open that library, itunes doesn't seem to be seeing the library.  Any ideas on what I have done wrong?

  • Edit Itunes Library on another computer

If I get ARD (and pay 300 bucks) - can i go into another computer on my home network and fully edit that computer's itunes library ? tweak playlists etc ?
basically is ARD like windows RDT ?

If all you need is to be able to control another computer, then ARD would be vast overkill. If the systems all have Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6, you can use the Screen Sharing built into those versions of Mac OS X to take control of the machine, at which point you can do just about anything you could do from the system itself.

  • How do I change my Itunes library to another computer without losing anything or replacing my existing files with ones on the new pc?

I recently broke up with my girlfriend and I'm trying to switch all of my info. around to my new place and pc.  How do I save all of my existing files of music, etc. to the new pc and start a new itunes library using what I already have?  I don't know what kind of info. that I would need about her pc or if I need anything at all.  Can somebody please help?

    - Transfer iTunes purchases to the new computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music by using a third-part program like one of those discussed here:
Copy music from Ipod to new computer...: Apple Support Communities
Copy music from Ipod to new computer...Some third-party programs also allow moving synced photos to the new computer.
    - Make a backup of the iPod by connecting the iPod to the computer and right clicking on the iPOd under Devices in iTunes and selecting Backup
    - Restore the iPod from that backup and sync as necessary.

  • How do use my itunes library in another computer

I have an itunes account and a library on my pc at work, but when i try to accede to my library on itunes on my personal computer it doesn´t work.
    What should I do?
on both pc's I have windows xp.
    Best regards

You need to explain what you are doing more clearly.
If you want to use the same music library on two PCs, you need to have iTunes installed on both PCs, the same "iTunes Library.itl" file on both PCs and the same music files in the "iTunes music" folder.
This article form Apple gives a method of copying music between two PCs using your iPod:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173
Both PCs must also be authorised in order to play music purchased from the iTunes store.
