Open iWeb '08 site in iWeb 09

I am trying to add new material to my existing web site (created in iWeb '08). But I don't know how to open the site in iWeb '09. Unfortunately, the "Domain" has been overwritten the first time I opened iWeb '09. How can I migrate an iWeb html page into iWeb '09 to update it?
Thanks in advance

Hi, I am having the same problem. I created a website with blog and pictures using iweb 08 a week ago on mac. Now, I have new mac with iweb 09. I opened it, and it just gives you the option to create a new one? I did not save, so my original site is still there. How do I work on my site using iweb 09? I want to add some more entries onto my blog and add some more pictures from a trip.
There has got to be a way to do this?
Thanks,

  • How do I get mt web site to appear when opening iWeb to edit?

I can still access my web site (iWeb 3.0.4) on line but it does not open on my computer when I click on iWeb.  I just get a window to publish to MobileMe with the icon for a new site in the upper left. How do I find and open my original site?  I have put years of work into it.

The file you need toi backup is name domain.sites2 and is located in your Users/Home() /Library/Application Support/iWeb folder.  Without that file you won't be able to continue to edit and maintain your website.
    However, remember this:
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home()/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
So if you're running Lion or Mt Lion you'll need to make that library visible before you can find and backup the domain.sites2 file.

Open iPhoto, select a couple of photos and use the Share ➙ iWeb ➙ Photo page menu option.  That has jump started iWeb for others.  I could take a couple of tries.
If that doesn't work try the following:
1 - delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iiWeb.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iWeb's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder.
3 - launch iWeb and try again.

Temporarily disable any rewrite rules by renaming your .htaccess file if it exists

It's a really bad idea to post your email address - it's an invitation to spam - and I've asked the Hosts to remove it. (Even though I've now noticed you mis-spelled it! - anyway, never post your address in a forum.)
You have a site here: http://virginiagordon.com/www.virginiagordon.com/WELCOME.html
If that's not the page you are having trouble with, what is that page's URL?

When I opened iweb it opened as a file I deleated. I have a published website with godaddy and would like to update. How can I open the existing iWeb app to the site that is already published?

You cannot retrieve the already published site as iWeb CANNOT open it - it has no import facility.
You need your domain.sites file, which you can find under User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites.  You do not need any kind of account for this because it is your domain.sites file that resides on the hard drive of your Mac anyway.  Find this file and you can alter your website.
Use a spotlight search to try and find it and if this does not work you can download something called Find Any File.  If you really can't find it, then you'll have to start from scratch because iWeb cannot open a site that is already published.

  • Site Not Appearing When I Open iWeb 09

When I open iWeb 09 my web site usually appears. Now the application opens but the site does not. The inspector apears but nothing else. Under File I cannot open a new page or new site. Under library/application support/iweb the file named Domain is there. If I try to open that the same thing occurs.
Just before this started happening I would be able to open my site and on my blog page the main page opens and looks fine but the page with the individuals blogs as well as the archive page were blank. The program crashed a couple of times and now nothing appears as I have noted above.
If you have any thoughts on what is happening or has happened and what I can do about it please respond. Thanks in advance.
    Brent

Thanks for the link. Deleting the preferences file worked. Now I get my site back, however the problem with the blog remains.
I have the blog as a second site in iweb. It has been working fine as I have been creating it (haven't published this yet) but now only the Blog page is visible. The Entries page and the Archive page are blank white. When I went to try to publish it just now it came back with an error and unable to publish.
Any thoughts on this remaining concern? Thanks.

  • IWeb opens but my site won't

I am a Photographer and I use iWeb to publish online contact sheets for my clients. Basically for each job I complete I copy my existing domain.sites file to a new folder rename it add my content publish it to the web and I'm good to go.
Well for the site in question which is a rather large one 56 galleries each with over 40 photos that was nearly complete and I was trying to put the finishing touches on, I click to open it and iWeb opens but the site does not. iWeb is running I can open the inspector window the font window image adjust, and color windows just not the window with my site in it. Hmmmm any ideas anyone??
I can go back and create a new site from a different file and it opens fine. But this one site wont open? I've tried deleting the prefs in the User file, and deleting the Cache from the user file copying the file to another location, opening my backup copy. Also when I opened it to day for the first time I got the iWeb tutorial window.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Michael

Try deleting the prefs again - Home Folder/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iWeb.plist
Restart your Mac and run Disk Utility to repair permissions.
If this doesn't work you need to consider the possibility that the domain file is corrupt.
When you say you are duplicating the domain file to another folder and adding content to that, are you deleting any content from this file as well as adding new?

  • Openning up a site with iweb

o.k. I need some expert help. This is too simple of a problem. My iweb appears where it should on the web, at: http://web.mac.com[yourmembername]
However when I open up my iweb, the site that is listed was just a test site. I went into my idisk and the site files for iweb are there and seem fine. (I can click on the html and the pages appear as they should.
Here is my question, how in the world can I open up my site that I want to work on. The site defaults to my test site. I have tried everything I can think of, dragging, tried to delete the old site etc.
It would be nice if the answer were simple like "file open"
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks,

Double-click on the Domain file and it'll reset the default location of where iweb reads that file from.
If you double clicked on a Domain file that was in a different location other than your user/library/application support/iweb folder and worked on it then closed iweb then the next time you open iWeb it'll look for the Domain file in this new location but if you've moved it again since the last time you opened iweb and you open iWeb then iweb will just start a new Domain file at the default location.
What you need to do is double-click the Domain file you'd like iWeb to open.

  • Published site w/ iWeb but next time opening iWeb no content was there

I recently published updates to my site but the next time I opened iWeb there was no content & I was asked which templet I wanted to use - as if I was opening for the first time. Is there any way to reload the content into iWeb - if so how? Thanks in advance for any time & effort in helping me.
    Guy

Guy ~ Assuming you haven't inadvertently logged in to a different User Account, try this... Via Spotlight's magnifying glass icon at upper right of your screen, search for iWeb's Domain file(s) by entering this:
    .site
...and see what shows up in the drop-down list of hits. Note that any files which may be iWeb's Domain file won't be displayed as filename.site — rather they'll be displayed simply as filename, where filename could be anything you've perhaps renamed the original Domain file to be.

If you can't find it, be aware that only iWeb's Domain file can be opened in iWeb. See this Apple doc on How to back up MobileMe data. It says:
Any websites you have published with iWeb should still be available within iWeb. iWeb stores everything in a Domain file, normally located in the ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder (although it can be moved). If you no longer have this file, you can view your currently published pages and manually recreate them within iWeb, but there is no way to import published pages back into iWeb. You can manually back up the Domain file, or use Backup to back it up.
Paragraph 2.3 of this FAQ page gives some tips on how to use published files, graphics, photos, etc., to help rebuild the site from scratch:

  • In trying to transfer iWeb pages (not uploaded) to another computer I went into the library and transferred the domain onto the desktop. Disaster! On opening iWeb all previous (uploaded) sites have disappeared. Help!

In trying to transfer iWeb pages (not uploaded) to another computer I went into the Library and transferred the domain onto the desktop. Disaster! On opening iWeb all previous (uploaded) sites have disappeared. On opening the domain all I can recover is the many component parts, and when unzipped the code. Help! Mike

Code in a domain file - really?  That is not possible because the domain.sites file does not contain any html or css code at all - the domain file is your iWeb data file and you won't see any code until you publish your website.
If you can see html code, then you have the wrong file and it is a published version of your site which iWeb can do nothing with - iWeb has no import facility so cannot open any html files.
Go back and ensure that you have the correct domain.sites files that can be found under your User Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites and if you have Mavericks then you need to go to Go and press the alt key to reveal your hidden User Library, so that you can then get to Application Support and then iWeb and then your domain.sites file.
You will also need to go and download either DomainCracker or iWebSwitch which allows you to open individual domain files under Mavericks, because from Lion onwards, you cannot open individual domain files.
Also, it says that you are still using iWeb 08?  If this is so, you'll either need to upgrade to iWeb 09 by going to Amazon and purchasing the iLife 09 or 11 boxed set, both of which contain iWeb 09 or you need to switch to newer software that is actively being supported and developed such as EverWeb (http://www.everwebapp.com).

  • IWeb doesn't allow me to open an old site folder

    Hello everybody
recently I had to reinstall my software on my MacBook Pro.
I've created two sites, located in user/Sites, but, when I open iWeb, it wants me to create a new site!!
I'm unable to put the folders of my old sites in iit in order to modify/publish them again.
    any solutions??
    thanks a lot!!!
ps I'm italian...sorry for my bad english

Well no, you won't be able to open your sites because iWeb has no import facility which means that it cannot open a site that has already been published - html/css files.  You say that your sites are located under User/Sites - well this means that the sites have been published, so iWeb cannot open them.
The file that you need is your domain.sites file which is located in your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites.  Note that you need to look under your User/Library and not your System Library as iWeb is not located there.
Your domain.sites file is the file where iWeb stores all your website data before you publish.  Double click on your domain file and iWeb will open it.

  • Iweb opens but no site?

Today, i opened iweb and all i am getting now is the start up page where it wants me to create a new site. I don't understand...nothing has gone wrong with the computer and i have checked that the site is still active in my idisk. Also i was creating a backup of the site from the "domain" every day, that is there also. However, when i double click it to reload iweb just keeps asking me to create a new site. Another strange thing is that when i click the idisk in finder, it tells me the volume can't be found. I have to click "go" then idisk to make it work, but my main problem is getting this site back on....Any help please???

Look in your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder for a domain.sites2 file. Check it's size and date. Open it to make sure that's the domain file iWeb is opening and showing no site.
It it truly is empty do a search on your hard drive for domain.sites2 to see if there's another such file/package. If not then, unless you have a backup copy of that file/package, you'll have to recreate your site from scratch. iWeb cannot read and/or import html web files once they are published. It can only create them.
If you have to recreate the site check out Paragraph 2.3 of this iWeb FAQ site. It offers tips that will make it a little easier: http://iwebfaq.org/site/iWebBackupretrieve.html
If you don't have a backup strategy for your domain file you might consider using the Automator script I created (based on Varkgirl's script) to backup the User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder. It will copy it to the desktop. You can edit the script with Automator to change the destination for the backup copy. It can be downloaded from  Toad's Cellar.

  • When I try to open iweb I get the following message: Can't open file "~/Sites/NAVIGATOR/index.html." How do I fix this? Using 10.6.3 soon to be 10.6.6 and then Lion.

When I try to open iweb I get the following message: Can’t open file “~/Sites/NAVIGATOR/index.html.” How do I fix this? Using 10.6.3 soon to be 10.6.6 and then Lion. I have never opened the product before and have had it on the computer since new.

Go into your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and see if there's a file titled Domain.sites.  If there is double click on it and see if iWeb opens.
If there is no Domain file there do the following:
delete the iWeb preference files, com.apple.iWeb.plist and com.apple.iWeb.plist.lockfile, that resides in your Home() /Library/Preferences folder.
go to your Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete its contents.
    launch iWeb and try again.

  • Iweb won't open all my sites after migrating over to macbook

    Hi again
So i migrated all my files and apps from my imac to my new macbook pro so that now i can do work on my movies and websites while away from the desktop.
I have several sites which I've renamed to identify them and i put the iweb folder into the dock and can choose which site to work on from there. Works perfectly ... on the imac. (I publish the sites to an external drive)
Today I opened iweb the first time on my macbook pro by clicking on one site in the iweb folder in the dock. It opened fine and i made my updates perfectly, then i closed iweb.
I clicked on a second site  in the dock folder to update it and iweb opened .... but it opened the first site ag: i closed iweb and tried a different site: the same thing happened.
So i went to the root iweb folder to select the second site and 'open with...' but the first site opened again.
I went back to the imac, and everything is fine ... so i copied the two sites to a jumpdrive to transfer to the macbook again, but still the same problem: the only iweb site that opens is the first site i worked on.
This is a problem, because i wanted the macbook so i can work on these jobs anywhere, not just on my imac (which is becoming inconvenient).
    How can i solve this?
what else can i do to open these sites? is there a workaround?
    Help !!!
    Thank you
    Elizabeth

In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
To open your domain file in Lion or Mountain Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

  • I just opened iWeb for the first time in several months and the fonts have changed and are garbled in the headers.  Is this a result of switching to Lion, and does this mean I have to go through all 70 pages on my site and manually change them back?

The text on my pages are messed up.  The letters in my headers are on top of each other and the letters in the body of my pages have no separation between them.  Is this a result of switching to Lion?  (I haven't opened iWeb in several months, since before I installed Lion.)  Any ideas of how to fix this, or do I need to go text block by text block and page by page to put it back right?  Thanks.
