Open link in new tab, read new tab, go back to original tab

I like to browse on a page and view a link from that page in a new tab.
I remember doing this and the original page would be at the same place when I returned to it.
But now the original page always goes back to the beginning. This can happen even when I return to the original page almost immediately.
I am now using an iPad air with iOS 7 and had been using an iPad 2 with iOS 6. Is this happening because of that? Has safari changed its behavior?
How can I get the previous behavior? Is there a setting I have missed?

I cannot slide pages on an iPad. I can slide pages on a Mac.
The problem exists on the iPad. Try the site macsurfer.com. It is very long vertically.
Open a link in a new tab. Try it from somewhere way down. Go back to the original tab. Is it still open at the place where you left it, or is it now back to the top of the page? My results are a few times yes, many times no. It used to work much better.
To open a link in a new tab, press on the link slightly until you get a pop up menu with that choice.

Am I the only one finding this annoying?

If you mousehover on a link and press the right mousebutton.

Sara, I started having the same problem yesterday. In my case I was able to remedy it by disabling FasterFox 3.9.81. If you don't have that installed, I would recommend turning off your extensions (one by one), restarting firefox, and testing until you find the offender. Hope that helps!

• Right-clicking on links and selecting "Open Link in New Tab" opens a blank tab.

Seems like opening links in new tabs just doesn't work in any fashion. I right-clicked a link (several, actually) to open it in a new tab. It opened a blank tab. No sign of ever acknowledging the link, nothing in the URL bar. Just blank.
Wonder if this is related to my earlier question about opening links from Thunderbird being broken as well...

the user cor-el has a method that does not require any add-ons. He States
This code in userChrome.css will move "Open Link in New Window" to the top of the context menu.
<pre>@namespace url("<a href="http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul">http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul</a>"); /* only needed once */
#contentAreaContextMenu &gt; * { -moz-box-ordinal-group: 2; }
#context-openlink { -moz-box-ordinal-group: 1 !important; }</pre>
the user jay_ff shows how to do it using the Menu Editor Add-on
1. Install the Menu Editor add-on from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/menu-editor/ .
2. After the installation, go to Firefox> add-ons (or simply use Ctrl+Shift+A)
3. Go to the Menu Editor "Options"
4. In the "Main context menu," simply grab the "Open link in New Tab" and place it below the "Open Link in New Window"
5. and Voila! You may also change other menu options if you want to!
I tried jay_ff method first and found that indeed changing the Main Context Menu did cause the hotlink context menu to change as well.

• When I right click on a link "Open link in new tab" since a few days, it "jumps over" the tab to the right and opens in the tab next to that. How can I change this back to opening in the tab next to the page from which I opened as it used to be?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
See:
* Troubleshooting extensions and themes
* Troubleshooting plugins
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
* Use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
* Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

• Firefox does not open links in new tab

Using Firefox 3.6.15 with XPPro, if I click on a link in Google (or on this site for that matter), it will not open a new tab. In the past, I had no such problem before 3..6.16.
My husband is using Firefox 3.6.15 with XPHome and his does open links in new tab.
I have not added any new toolbars sin updating to 3.6.15. Only use the Roboform toobar and Firefox's.
I thought this might have something to do with Google, which I think used to have an option to open links in a new page, but can't find any such options on Google search page now.

Maybe it is a conflict between Vimperator and a TabMix-like extension?
I am not sure but go check your tab related perfs and add-on options may help.

• Why does right-click & "Open Link in New Tab" make the original tab name to change to "New Tab" when I back-arrow in the original tab to reach the original page

I use Google as my home page.
When I do a search in Google I have a practice of opening the search links in a new tab by right-clicking on the link and selecting "Open Link in New Tab". That way I can examine multiple links from the search page, which is now open in the first tab.
The problem that occurs is that when I use the back-arrow in the Navagation bar to return the first tab to its original page, I find the tab name of the original page to be "New Tab" rather than "Google" and I have to click on the "Reload current page" in the Navigation bar to return the tab name to "Google".
I'm using Firefox-25 on a Linux-Mint 64-bit platform with KDE-4.9.5.

The problem is just with the name of the tab, not with the contents of the page -- the page looks normal??
I ask about the page because Firefox 23 seems to have introduced a problem with Firefox's "fast back-forward cache" on the Google search results page. It is related to the "instant prediction results" feature interacting with Firefox is some different way. Might be related. Not sure.

• When I right click and select open link in new tab, it leaves the page I am on and takes me to the first tab to the right

I usually have many tabs open when I read the news, and it is nice to select open links in new tabs while scrolling through a news' home page. Lately, however, Mozilla has been opening the new tab, but switches the page I am viewing to the first tab to the right of the home page. For example, I had ESPN.com open, and then a few Facebook tabs after that to the right. Whenever I would select open link in new tab, the tab I was viewing would switch from ESPN.com to the first Facebook tab to the right, and the new tab would open a little further down the line. Any chance anyone knows how to fix this?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

• "Open Link in New Tab" doesn't remember first page in history

I recently noticed that the "Open Link in New Tab" is not remembering the very first page in the tab history. The replication is simple.
# Go to any page (Google works well)
# Right click and chose to open a link on the page in a new tab
# On the new tab, left click a link to load a new page
# The "Go back one page" button will remain grey and you will not be able to go back to the first page for the tab.
# Left click another link and the "Go back one page" button will now be active allowing you to go to the previous page, but not all the way back to the first page of the tab.
This happens whether I use the middle mouse or a right click and chose open in new tab. It is present since I upgraded to Firefox 4.0, but was also happening before the upgrade when I was using Firefox 3.6.

I have the same problem. There are two other problems that might be related. The first one is, sometimes it seems like Firefox loses focus of the page so if I try to refresh the page using CTRL-R or the refresh button, nothing happens. The only way to refresh the page is to hit CTRL-L and Enter as it you're opening the page again. The second problem happens when another window is opened (e.g. new window, new bookmark window from CTRL-SHIFT-B). When you go back to the original window, everytime you go to the tab that the new window was opened from, somehow Firefox brings the window to the front, but the focus is still on the tab.

• In Firefox 4, how do I get back the context menu for the drop down list of the Location Bar so I can Open Link in New Tab, which I did often in FF 3?

Firefox 3 has a context menu for the drop down list of
the Location Bar. One option on this menu I used often
is "Open Link in New Tab" -- quite convenient.
This context menu has disappeared in Firefox 4.
Can I get it back?

Firefox shows the "Use custom settings for history" setting as an indication that at least one of the history and cookie settings is not the default to make you aware that changes were made.<br />
If all History settings are default then the custom settings are hidden and you see "Firefox will: (Never) Remember History".<br />

• Right-clicking Open Link in New Tab or Window doesn't work

After upgrading to the latest version, 30.0, the right-click functions to Open link in New Tab or New Window stopped working. When I click the link that I would like to open in new tab or window, the right click window appears, I click on the desired function, and the right click window closes and nothing happens.
I restarted in safe mode and the problem remains. I am using Windows XP. I also tried uninstalling Firefox and then doing a clean re-install and that didn't help.
For now I went back to using version 29.0.1. Yes, I know that it isn't as safe but I can't use Version 30. without the right-click options!!!
I really wish the developers would focus on fixing bugs, vulnerabilities, etc. and leave the basic functions alone! The old saying if it isn't broken don't "fix" it!!!!!

This didn't fix the problem so I have decided to revert to the previous version: 24.6.0 esr. Maybe when version 31 or 32 come around I come back to the "latest" version?

• Firefox Will not open a link in a new tab after I right click and then click on open link in new tab

When I right click A bunch of new options pop up and firfox will not open links in new tabs. Safe mode did nothing.

• Everytime I open a new window to browse, in this new window I would right click to open link in new tab but the new tab always shows up in the other window.

I would click a link which opens a new window. Then in this new window, I would right click to open link in new tab. The new tab does not show up in this new window. It instead shows up in the original browser window. How can I make the new tab show up in the same window?

Firefox did have a behavior where some new windows -- those considered to be dialogs -- could not have new tabs, so new tabs were diverted to the window from which the dialog was opened.
According to the bug tracking system, a fix is in the works:
644729 – Popup window with all toolbars visible causes new tabs to open in another browser window referencing 485237 – Need to treat popups consistently.
That second ones says Target Milestone: Firefox 12, so the fix probably didn't make it into Firefox 11.
WORKAROUNDS
That first bug says there is an add-on to work around this -- it enables the middle mouse button to open links in a dialog window: Bug 586234 Unfixer :: Add-ons for Firefox. I haven't tried it myself.

• "open link in new tab -switch to it immediately" cannot be disabled

When I left click a link, FF 14.01 will switch to the new tab immediately. When I right click and say "open link in new tab", FF won't switch immediately. I have done all the obvious things in tools/options,and have also reset FF to its default state and disabled all add-ons and extensions. Before I do a complete uninstall/reinstall to see if that works, any other ideas?
Is there an entry in the windows 7 registry that would force FF to always switch to the new tab when a link is left clicked? I ask this because I suspect the problem might be malware related. The system is completed clean now, so that is not the problem.

Do you mean Ctrl+left click or just plain left click? I think a plain left click always navigates immediately whether the page opens in the same tab, new window, or new tab. What behavior did you have before, if it was different?

• Open link in new tab next to original tab?

I've noticed since updating to FF12 that now when I click to get "open link in new tab," the new tab opens on the far right of my tabs rather than next to the tab I clicked from, as it did in FF3.6. Is there any way to get it to work the old way?
Thanks,
Ellen

Have you tried or checked this hidden Firefox preference in about:config......
You can change a preference to make tabs open
# at the end of all open tabs
# immediately after the current tab.
See: http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config
*Type about:config in the URL bar and press the Enter key.
*If you see the warning, accept it (promise to be careful).
*Search = browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent
*Look at the "Value" column (false=open at end, true=open after current tab); Value = true is the default.
*Double-click that preference to toggle the value from true to false, or false to true

• Right click "Open Link in New Tab" not working?

When at any website I try to right click on a link and then choose "open link in new tab" and nothing happens. "open link in new window" also does nothing. When first open up Firefox and right click on a link a really long list of options appears as well which did not appear yesterday. I think Firefox updated and restarted my computer last night as well. I tried Firefox safe mode and it still happened.

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
*In Firefox 29.0 and above, click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
*In previous Firefox versions, click on the Firefox button at the top left of the Firefox window and click on Help (or click on Help in the Menu bar, if you don't have a Firefox button) then click on Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".<br>
