Open Mail Attachment without having to save file

I'm pretty sure I should be able to double click the icon for an attachment in Mail and it should open with the program from my preferences.
I can't even right click the file, choose open with, and select what I want to open with. Mail just sits there ... no error message .. nothing.
I can view in place, or save to downloads, or drag it to Desktop.
Where the **** is this setting or how can I correct this. Driving me nuts.

On my machine a single click on a Word document in an email opens the Word doc, no double click required. I can see the Word icon before I click on it, it is not just a generic icon.
I can also right click and select the application, like you suggest you should be able to do.
Not sure why it does not work for you though as there are no settings in Mail that I can see that would affect it.

I have an iMac with Maverick 10.9.2 and mail version 7.2. I am trying to switch over from my laptop to using the iMac exclusively. The laptop mail version is 4.6. In that version, when I receive an email with an attachment, there's a little icon of the attachment that I can just click on and open it. In the new version (7.2), there's no little icon. Instead, if i click on the attachment, it just shows a file name and I'm forced to choose to "save as" before I can open it. Is there a way to set up my preferences so i can see the icon and click to open without saving?

Open a message that contains attachments.
Then hover your mouse over that line that separates the body of the message from the "To, From, Subject Line." On that line in the center, you are given a few options. Trash, Reply, Forward, and the attachments. Click on the attachments and down at the bottom of that list. You can select the "Quick Look". With the list, you can click on each attachment directly and given an option to download it.

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed almost 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Your iCloud password is your Apple ID and password. You must know it since you are posting here.
Have you transfered your MMe account to iCloud? If not, open iCloud in system preferences and sign in with your Apple ID and password.
If you have transfered it to iCloud, do this:
Go to the iCloud icon in System Preferences and open it. Sign out of iCloud.
Open Mail. If the iCloud or MMe account still exists in Mail's preferences under accounts, select the account and delete it. Then sign back into iCloud and choose Mail and any other applications in iCloud that you use. The Mail account should be put into Mail automatically.
Signing out of iCloud should remove the account from Mail and signing back in should put it back. There is no manuel account creation by you when using Apple Mail application.

We frequently generate pdf files from our 3D program and would like to know if it's possible to either open a pdf file in a way that it doesn't get locked or hold up so the pdf can be updated even when opened or in use.
Most programs e.g. ultra edit & notepad will let go the file when you opened and hence the file can be updated or over written even when in use.
If any guru can help, would be highly appreciated

Hi Abbas,
It's not possible to overwrite a pdf when it is already in use by a different program or user. The file then opens up in Read Only mode.
You can make a copy of the file and then apply those changes later in the original file. That's the only possible solution.

I'm trying to create anl attachment without a suffix.
Here is my code:

               attAnlFile.setName("File");
               attAnlFile.setContentType("");
               attAnlFile.setText("Test");
               msg.addAttachment(attAnlFile);
               inputModuleData.setPrincipalData(msg);
I get a file named "File.bin", but i need a file, which is only named "File".
Can anyone help me?

The attachements are given a .bin extension by default. To change this , the procedure is available in the Mail Adapter FAQ : 856599

The MIME headers involved in most heuristics are Content-Type, Content-Description, and Content-Disposition. When you create an XI message, the XI payload name is automatically set in the Content-Description. If you want to change or set all of these headers, you can use the MessageTransformBean module (Note 793922) in the adapter framework.

The reason for this inconsistent behavior comes from the fact that this mechanism has been extended incrementally. The fix will be to your email setup, or browser, or something like that. Can't always be fixed.

How to open Mail attachment in different spaces

With Snow Leopard Mail attachment stopped to open in the space to witch I assigned the related application, but keep on opening in the Mail space.
I have Mail assigned to space #1 and, for example, iWork assigned to space #3. With Leopard iWork attachments opened correctly in space #3, whereas with its successor they open in space #1.
I didn't find any option to set this right.
Besides spaces has not worked right since Mac OS X 10.6.0. It happens that even when I open documents from the Finder they open in the wrong space.
Is there any way to make it work fine, as it did with Mac OS 10.5?

The attachment does not open directly. In other words, i do not use href.
The link is having an onclick event, which in turns calls the struts Action class and the response is returned as an attachment.

Again the file I cannot access directly. I get it as byte array, which I put it in to my response.

Whenever someone emails me with a pdf attachment I cannot just open the attachment. It makes me save the document first, locate the file I just saved in my hard drive, and then I can open it. I started having this problem earlier this week. Before, I could just click on the attachment and it would open. I have the latest first of Adobe. What can I do so I can simply click on an attachment and it opens?

i want to open a mail attachment using new window (in IE). here i am able to manage to create the new window and viewing the contents but the problem is the new window is opening before the 'open', 'save' or 'cancel' dialog box is coming.
Currently in my JSP i am calling

this will open a window immediately and dialog box will come after that. if i select 'save', the new window get closed.
i want the new window to open only if i select open.
Can anybody help me?
