Open mail -relay problem !

Hi,
My Internet/Mail server is Netra i with Solaris 2.5.1.
I received e-mail from mail-abuse org saying that my mail server is open for mail-relay.
How can I disable it ?
Thanks Ivan

Hello there,
I believe that is true with sendmail 8.6 version which was shipped
with Solaris 5.5.1 or 5.6. You will need to apply the latest
5.5.1 sendmail patch (103594-19) which upgrades 5.5.1 sendmail
to be equivalent to sendmail 8.8.8+sun patches.
Unlike previous versions, sendmail 8.8 can be configured not to
pass on mail from one user outside the local domain to another in sendmail.cf
FYI, mconnect <your hostname> will show the current sendmail rev.
Hope this helps.

  • 10.5.5 loses config, defaults to open mail relay

    Hi,
I seem to have a persistent problem with a newly-built 10.5.5 server. When I initially set up the server, I checked the "Accept SMTP relays only from these hosts and network" box, with the settings 127.0.0.0/8 and 192.168.0.0/16 - the latter being the NAT address range of the local LAN.
However if I stop and start the Mail service, the server appears to lose its config and will now accept an SMTP relay from anywhere on the planet. This can be verified in the logs and the monumental increase in traffic on the server. Using an online open relay tester such as SpamHelp (http://www.spamhelp.org/shopenrelay/shopenrelaytest.php) verifies the problem.
If I stop SMTP, re-do the settings in the "Accept SMTP relays ..." dialog box then re-start SMTP, the settings take effect and the server no longer behaves as an open relay - it's triggered only by stopping and then restarting the entire Mail service. And as an added bonus, the settings appear correct in the Relay dialog at all times - it's only the network usage and outside verification that indicates there's a problem.
Anyone got any good ideas? All suggestions gratefully received ....
    Cheers ...... Kent

OK, changes made ... for some reason the localrecipientmaps entry was appearing multiple times in main.cf, and the final version was empty. Have edited to correct the problem and have added the new entries ... postconf -n now looks like this:

  • Since installing mountain lion i have a problem with mail. when i delete a message close  and open mail the message has come back. please help!

Since installing Mountain Lion i have a problem with Mail. I delete a number of messages from the same person but keep the newest message in my Inbox. I actually delete them from the Trash. The next time i open Mail the deleted messages are back again. Can anybody please help as this is getting annoying. Thanks in Anticipation.

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    First, empty the Trash.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 -o -acl \) 2> /dev/null | wc -l
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "41." Please post it in a reply.

  • I am having problems gettting my mail to work ... Mac telling me that my start up disk id full and to delete some files to free up space ... have done this but when i open mail from the dock it just brings up the colour wheel and nothing happening

I am having problems gettting my mail to work ... Mac telling me that my start up disk id full and to delete some files to free up space ... have done this but when i open mail from the dock it just brings up the colour wheel and nothing happening ... it shows when you right click on the mail icon that " application not responding"

If your hard drive is getting full, you need to free up, at least, 20 GBs of space on your iMac's hard drive.
If your Mac is running a fairly recent version of OS X, here are some general guidelines.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Other things you can do to gain space.
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it run the automatic ans S.M,A.R.T. tests,  then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the tabs that have the ability to clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • Mac Newbie - Problem opening Mail, says home directory is full

I am new to Mac so forgive my ingnorance. I have been using Mail with no problems but just now (and each successive time despite restarts), when I open Mail a box pops up that says
"Mail cannot update your mailboxes because your home directory is full. You must free up space in your home folder before using Mail. Delete unneeded documents or move documents to another volume."
    I appreciate any help.
    G-Mc

    Try the following.
Quit the Mail.app first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > Envelope Index. Delete the Envelope Index file and empty the Trash.
Copy the Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Launch Mail and you will be prompted to import all mailboxes located in the Mail folder at Home > Library > Mail.
Select OK and allow the import process to complete. This process isn't really importing anything but replacing the deleted Envelope Index file and re-indexing all mailboxes.
If this resolves the problem and after confirming all mailboxes and messages are available, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder placed on the Desktop.

  • When I open Mail the screen flickers random blue and gray appeared on the screen. I took a video too. Will that happen again? Is it hardware problem? This ipad2 32GB was replaced yesterday and I think it is refurbished. Are replace product refurbished?

I got my ipad2 replaced yesterday. And this new ipad started giving me problem by crashing aps. Then I restored the ipad twice but the problem was still there. I called apple and they fixed it by doing Reset All Settings. But now I have this weird problem. When I open Mail the screen flickers random blue and gray appeared on the screen. I took a video too. Will that happen again? Is it hardware problem? This ipad2 32GB was replaced yesterday and I think it is refurbished. Are replace product refurbished?

There is no way for anyone here to know if your replacement iPad is a refurbished unit.  Per Apple's replacement policy, replacements can be refurbished units.  If you feel the unit is not working correctly, take it back, let them check it out and if found defective, they will replace that unit.

  • Problem with opening mail after nstalling OS 10.6.6

On the application directory I only see "mail.app (original)". Clicking here will give the same error message. On spotlight I don't see any other mail.app. Thanks
This is the error message I get
    Hi, anybody can help??
Problem started immediately after upgrading to 10.6.6
Tried to open mail with different user but problem persist.
Going into the application folder and opening mail from there did not help.
I get this message when trying to open mail.
You can’t use this version of Mail with this version of Mac OS X
You tried to open Mail version 4.3 (1081/1082) in:
    /Applications/Mail (original).app
It can’t be used on this version of Mac OS X. Try opening the version of Mail located in the Applications folder on your computer. For more information, click the Help button.
    Thanks

For some reason I can't change names on the application folder.
Hmm, you're right... wonder when that changed. It's probably a good idea to prevent you from renaming apps, except that your Mail app has the wrong name.
Try this... open the Terminal (in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder) and paste in the following command:
    sudo mv /Applications/"Mail (original).app" /Applications/Mail.app
Then press return. You will be prompted for your password, and when you type it nothing will show up. Press return again after typing it.
If that doesn't work, you can use [Pacifist|http://www.charlessoft.com> to reinstall the original Mail application from your Mac OS X install disk.
Either way, after getting some version of Mail with a correct name installed, run the combo updater again to bring that copy of Mail up to the current version.

  • Problem when opening "Mail"

Dear members of the Apple Community,
After transferring my files and my profile on my new Macbook pro, I keep encountering a problem when opening "Mail". Each time I try, the app asks me to choose a mail account to add, but I already added the ones I normally use. I can either create/add this new account or click the "cancel" button. I cannot use the program (the main functions are not available). But if I try to add a new account, Mail does not upload the new messages for my existing accounts and if I click "cancel", the application simply close itself. What could I do?
Thanks a lot to your help.

It might be worth running Disk Utilities and then Repair Disk Permissions to see if that resolves the problem.

  • Problems Opening Mail

I can't get Mail to open at all. I don't have a .Mac email address, but I wanted to have a look purely to see what the program contains, what's in the drop-down menus, etc. I know Mail doesn't function (i.e you can't actually use it to send/recieve mail) without a .Mac email address, but I can't get it to open at all. As in clicking on it results in a never ending loading spiral and clicking on the icon reveals that it has instantly decided that it is 'Not Responding'.
If I was to buy a .Mac subscription, would Mail open as a result of having a valid email, or is there just something fundamentally wrong with Mail?
I know this is a kind of weird request, seeing as I'm not actually currently in any position to use the program, but I'd still like to have it working, y'know?

What makes you think Mail only works if you have a .Mac or MobileMe subscription? That's just not true; if somebody told you that, they are badly misinformed. Mail is a mail client, so it can be used with any mail service that supports POP or IMAP, and that includes services such as Yahoo! Mail and Google Mail (Gmail).
As for your problem, you haven't given us enough information to begin to diagnose the problem. Your profile doesn't identify the model you're using, what speed of processor, or even the version of Mac OS X that you're running. Beyond that, we don't even know when you started to use a Mac or what you did prior to opening Mail the first time this problem manifested itself. We need all those details.

  • Problems opening mail and address book after install

Ok I just reinstalled Leopard (erase and install after making backup with superduper).
When I open Mail I get the message:
+Mail can’t open because its index is read-only.+
+This file is located in Michael MBP:Users:Michael:Library:Mail:Envelope Index. If this file is on your computer, use the Get Info panel in the Finder to change your permissions for this file to “Read & Write.” If this file is located on a network server, contact the server administrator. After your permissions are changed, open Mail again.+
ok so when i go to that "envelope index" file it is about 6.3mb, when i check permissions, system and everyone are already read & write, there is also an (unknown) option that says read only but won't let me change it. if i move the "envelope index" file to the desktop and try to open mail, it creates a new envelope index file, but one that is way smaller, like 220k, and then nothing happens at all, mail just sits there, and i have to force quit it.
also when i try to open address book, it bounces on the dock for a second, then closes.
please help! i have to install on 2 more macs still

I've had the same problem. There are usually two or three envelope index files (envelope index; envelope index-1; envelope index-2, etc.). Envelope index-1 is always the one that has me, as the user, as read/write. I trash the other files and open Mail again. It then tells me that it has to import mailbox and that usually takes two to three minutes. Sometimes it then opens, but often it will say headers are damaged and to quit and re-open. It imports the mailbox again and stays open until I have to close or restart and then we start the process all over again. I've tried repair permissions, but no help. Very annoying.

  • Problem opening mail

When I try to open mail it prompts me to relaunch or report, is there anything i can do?

I'm having the same or similar problem. My MacBook was in sleep mode, which it's supposed to come out of when re-opened, but this time it froze up. So I held down the power button and restarted.
Now, when attempting to open Mail, I get the error message "The application Mail quit unexpectedly." I've tried to report and relaunch numerous times with no luck. I tried launching directly from Applications and tried moving the com.apple.mail.plist file out of Users/Library/Preferences (it was modified at about the time I tried to open OS X).
I even tried to import everything from Mail into Opera's mail client, but it couldn't seem to find anything to import after telling it to import from Apple Mail. I'm not sure if that's an Opera problem or what.
Can re-install Mail? I couldn't find it on my OS X install discs. Do I have to download it from Apple?

  • Problem opening Mail program

After a restart when I tried to open Mail I got the following error message- >>> "problem saving information in mailboxes" <<< and it says to try to restart the program but nothing happens. Each time I have to reboot the computer to try to gain control again. I have tried doing this a few times but it won't open properly.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks.

As an addendum, anyone with IMAP or Exchange accounts should be aware of what Apple says about reindexing by this method at:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mail/3.0/en/14019.html
Note the advice to remove account folders, and let Mail build new ones for IMAP accounts.

    Hi Charlotte,
You don't say what your version of Windows you have. Assuming XP, go to Start | Run, type DXDIAG and click OK. Click the Sound tab and run the tests to eliminate a hardware problem first of all. If you don't hear anything, check your cables first of all. Also make sure "Mute" isn't checkmarked in your sound setup. You'll find that in Windows Control Panel.
Which browser do you use? If you have Firefox 4, sign up to the HTML5 trial @ http://www.youtube.com/html5
HTML5 is the latest video standard and doesn't require Flash player. Google is in the process of converting all its files to work with the new format. It may solve you problem. If you don't have Firefox 4, you can get it from here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/fx/
    IE8 doesn't support HTML5.
To clean out your temp files, go to Start | Run, type: CLEANMGR and click OK. Click OK again to start the utility. Tick all the boxes except "Compress old files" because the latter takes too long, and then click OK. You can run this utility any time you wish by the way.
The above steps will hopefully fix your problem. If not, post here again please.

I was having this same issue all week. I'm also using 10.8.5 It was driving me crazy. I think I found a solution. I downloaded and installed the latest security update from Apple in the App Store. I have not had a reoccurance since (?). Maybe that will help you as well.
