"Open Network Preferences" launches iPhoto

When I click on "Open Network Preferences", snow leopard immediately launches iPhoto 11 version 9.2 and starts importing system icons.  How can I stop this from happening?  There is not much to check / uncheck so I would assume it is burried deep in the OS X.

I click on the upper right icon on the title bar, select "Open XXXXXX preferences"
Which icon is this exactly? In mine, I'm only seeing "Open Network Preferences" from the Airport icon on the Menubar. What happens if you open Sys Prefs from the Dock? Does that launch iPhoto too? If not, then what happens if you select Network with Sys Prefs open and all the Preference Panes are showing? What happens if you right click on the Sys Prefs icon in the Dock and select Network from there?
What happens if you open SystemPreferences from Terminal with this command?
open /Applications/System\ Preferences.app/
The main repository of system icons is located in
System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle->Contents/Resources.
Right click on CoreTypes.bundle> Show Package Contents
If you go there, are you seeing any of those icons that appear with iPhoto? Don't mess with any of those. Just look.
Have you verified Disk in Disk Utility?
If you've done a reinstall, then IPhoto may be the next thing to look at.
One other thing to try; might or might not help: you could rebuild the Launch Services Database. In Terminal Copy/Paste
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Log out and back in or restart required.

Hi, this has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
    Also, turn off IPv6:
    System Preferences » Network » AirPort » TCP/IP tab » Configure IPv6
    Or whatever Interface you use.

  • Unable to open network preferences

I'm unable to open the network preferences window inside system preferences. When I try, it just keeps saying "loading network" and nothing happens. I found a couple other discussions about this and trashing a .plist file, but it's not very clear how to solve the problem. Does anyone have any experience with this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

Open /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/, move everything but Boot and PowerManagement plist files to the Desktop (in a folder), restart, and see if you can reliably reset everything.

  • Cannot open network preferences, security, or downloads; blue screen appears

I have recently discovered that I cannot open my network preferences, security, or downloads folder. I do not know what else I am unable to open. For these three, I click upon them and instantly a blue screen appears, quickly followed by my desktop with all programs (except Finder) shut down, as if I was just logging on. The MacBook Pro is not yet a year old. I have recently downloaded the Amazon Cloud and was wondering if this could be causing the spastic behavior. My boyfriend seems to think that it is a corrupt file. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem? Thank you.

The only truths in your statement is the bolded sentence.  Everything else is false.

  • How to remove open network preference logo on main slide

How do we set what icons are up there, and how can I remove one of these which is named by open network perference <--> shape like this!

Normally you can hold CMD and drag off any unwanted icons.  If set by 3rd party software then it needs to be uninstalled.

  • "airport card not installed" and can't open network preferences

I was earlier having the problem of no ip address and not connecting to the Internet and self assigning an ip address.  I tried everything to fix that and on my last attempt I turned off the airport and shut down but now it says I dont have an airport card installed. How do I fix this?

Your running snow leopard which may be the case. Probably not but i recommend doing a clean install of snow leopard if the problem perrsists.
Also I suggest going to the apple store anyways. I personally enjoy finding help on the forums but sometimes if you book in advance going to the apple is a whole lot simpler.
You might also want to try upgrading your operating system to Lion or Mountain Lion which may fix the problem.
Yet another option would be to open up the laptop (Voids your warranty) and check is the airpot card is loose and maybe not being recognized.

  • Why does iPhoto crash when I open the preferences?

Whenever I try to open the preferences in iPhoto (latest release) it crashes. Any suggestions?

I completely uninstalled the printer and drivers and restarted the computer. I then uninstalled and then reinstalled Firefox 7.0.1, restarted the computer and then reinstalled the printer (from the previously downloaded exe file, because I don't have the CD for the printer). Unfortunately, neither of those things worked, but I did notice that when I uninstalled Firefox, it asked if I wanted to save settings, and I said yes and it seemed to remember the Dell 720 printer in the "about:config" menu. So, maybe uninstalling Firefox without saving settings would make a difference. What do you think? Also, I just noticed in the "Add or Remove Programs" menu in control panel that the icon next to "Dell Photo Printer 720" is a little recycle bin, which seems a bit odd. On the dell.com forum, someone suggested using Firefox 5.0.1, available at a different website. Is this worth a shot or are there other more conservative troubleshooting suggestions to try first?

  • I cannot open my network preference

    Hi,
I'm working on a Mac OS X 10.6.8, and when I try to open network preferences, it always shows system preferences and says "Loading Network..." on the top. I have this problem after playing with network locations: I deleted all network locations with the exception of "automatic" from network preference panel. As a consecuence of this problem I cannot connect to internet via ethernet, and the wifi in my home does not work... it is important to say that my work depends on internet connection...
I don't have any backup of the system configuration: I mean I cannnot use Time Machine..
I really thank if someone of you can help me !

  • Manually Changing Network Preferences

When I open my network preferences to select the order I would like to connect to networks if my top priority is unavailable will not let me change them or change the order I would like to connect to networks.
I just moved into a new house and I didn't have my own internet set up yet so I used a weak signaled wireless public wifi access until I had my own internet hooked up. Now that I have my own wireless network to connect to I do not need the free wifi network. So the problem is that everytime I turn on my laptop the public wifi, with the weak signal, connects to my macbook instead of my home wireless network that has a stronger faster signal.
When I open network preferences and go to where to change them, I can see the order of preferences but it will not let me alter their order. They appear in a light grey color and are un-clickable.
Any help or suggestions would be extremely appreciated!!
    Thanks

Start up in Recovery mode. In the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. While in Recovery, you'll have no access to your saved bookmarks or passwords, so make a note of those before you begin, if they're needed for the test.
Test. After testing, restart as usual and post the results.

  • Unable to access Network Preferences

When going into network preferences I am recieving a message: "You cannot open Network Preferences pane because it is not availible to you at this time."
Because of it I cannot access a lot of components in the system preferences. I made sure The wifi is working since I can browse websites. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is solved: it was a policy set that I wasn't aware of.

  • Networking preferences pop-down box

When opening networking preferences I get a pop-down box saying that your networking preferences have been changed by another application. I click the OK box ( there is no other choice, although I have no idea whether this is ok or not) The pop down keeps recurring until I force quit.
Is this a potentially serious issue, the networking preferences being changed, and how can I get around the repeated pop down box, I cannot otherwise use network prefs. ... Many thanks for any help

To stop the pop-up, Go to System Preferences: Security. Check the box next to "Require password to unlock each secure system preference." Then lock Security.
Try this cure for Security update...

  • First no airport, then no network preferences available

    Hi!
My problems are getting bigger and bigger:
    1. I could not activate my airport card after installing 10.6
    2. I erased all data in system configuration as other threads told me
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2140025
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=777038
    3. Then my MB said that there is no airport card installed (but it is)
    4. After that I tried to reinstall 10.6 but DVD stopped loading and said it interrupted
    5. Now I´m even not able to open network preferences! It loads, and loads, and loads...
    6. I installed 10.6.1 but nothing happened
I feel like snow leopard (and my attempt to clear the situation) killed network on my MB-Pro.
Does anyone have an idea? HELP ME PLEASE!
    Best regards,
    Hami

    Please Help...!!
I have similar problem with Hamibook.
After installing Snow Leopard OS 10.6, I cannot get into "NETWORK setting" in System Preference.
It just show the endless "loading network" and become "not responding".
During this process the other application also become very slow.
It might be due to incompatibility between the existing HSDPA USB modem driver (GSM modem for wireless internet connection, mobile connect) and OS 10.6.
Is there any idea to delete the incompatible driver without "network setting", e.g. through systems libraries database? (because I cannot open the "network setting" anymore now).
    Thank you in advance.

  • IBook blind to open network

My G4 iBook refuses to see my wifi network I have here in my house. My Mac Mini, windows laptop and Nintendo DS all see the access point at various points throughout the house.
My iBook on the other hand is blind to it even a meter from the router, I have tried to create a manual connection and done a mac stumbler search but nothing. My iBook can pickup my neighbors networks in certain areas though and has been fine migrating across networks in uni.
    Any suggestions ?

    Hi Kevin,
I assume your router broadcasts the SSID.
Open Network Preferences>Airport and enter the networks name there.

  • Iphoto is not opening library on launch

When I launch iphoto 9.4.2 in OS 10.7.5 The font and color windows come up and all the menus, BUT the actual iPhoto browser window does not come up. I have tried reinstalling all the way back to 9.1 from my iLife 11 disc all the way up to this 9.4.2. no change
I have tried switching libraries and making New libraries, but each time i restart the program it either forgets where that library is or just Doesn't launch with it. If I Directly open the library by dbl clicking it, I can open it, and if i change any albums it seems to remember my changes--But iPhoto will not launch that default library or any other library when i just launch the program from the app.
This is a new issue. It has worked just fine within the last few weeks (not used every day, so not sure when it happened). I did recently load the iBook software which is working, but really haven't added any other new software recently. I tested all my other iWeb, iMovie, garage band are all working just fine.
I also tried repairing permissions in DiskUtility, as that used to fix problems a lot. no help.
Thanks for any direction anyone can lend.
    Jeff

In case this happens to anyone else I had a discussion with Apple today and we figured out what to do. The order of most of this matters, so i'm trying to remember exactly as we did it. If for some reason it doesn't work for you perhaps i did the order a little wrong so test that. The keys to making it work were the quitting of iphoto before trashing the preference file and the Logging in and Out of whole computer before Re-Launching iPhoto again. I had trashed that Preference file Numerous times and can't be sure whether I had always quit iPhoto first (which i think i had), BUT I Know I did Not ever Log Out before when troubleshooting, so that may be the main key fix part??
    1.     Quit iPhoto
    2.     Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    3.     Log Out of your computer.
    4.     Log In
    5.     Hold option key while launching iPhoto.
    6.     Select the proper iPhoto Library you are wanting to use as your default library.
    7.     When that library launches you should be good to go.
To check, go ahead and Quit iPhoto and relaunch as normal, and it should launch with the library you have selected.
*We also trashed All iPhoto preferences that were listed in the preferences folder, including the Lock files AND the iPhoto cache file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / cache folder. The Apple Tech support thought that the fix was probably from the making sure I had Quit iPhoto Before Trashing the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file AND the making sure I Logged Out and Back In After that Trashing and Before ReLaunching iPhoto. The Extra thrown away files was a precaution since we had already been through 1 tech support person with no results and the supervisor wanted to just have a Completely clean slate.
So hopefully that helps someone else in the future.
I know it made me Happy!

  • Why does iPhoto always open/appear at launch?

Why does iPhoto always open/appear at launch? Someone used my computer under another account, and now my preferences seem to be changed. How do I fix it so iPhoto must me opened manually?

    Some possibilities:
Right click on the iPhoto icon in the Dock. Is Open at Log In Selected?
Check your System Preferences -> Accounts -> Log In Items
Is there a camera or anything that your Mac might think is a camera (flash drive, USB Hard Disk formatted to a FAT format, phone) attached to your Mac. If so, disconnect it. If you don't want to disconnect it, set iPhoto to "Do Nothing" when a camera is attached. You do this in the iPhoto Preferences.
