Open network shows as WPA

I am an IT Manager at a hotel. We offer free wireless internet access to all guests. It is a completely open network. All PC users connect fine, as do the vast majority of Apple users. But about once a week, we get someone with a Macbook that can't connect. Their wireless settings show our network as being blocked. Occasionally we can get around it by manually adding a wireless network with the same SSID as our network and specifying it as open. Then the computer will connect fine. But this solution isn't easy when either I am not here and it is our front desk staff trying to explain this, or if the guest isn't very computer literate. It is also just plain frustrating for the guests. I would like to find a solution, so any help would be appreciated.

From what I gather from your first post, not every Macbook in your hotel is having this problem, which leads me to believe that the Macbooks that are experiencing this issue might not be up to date with the latest version of OS X.
In order to resolve this issue, you may have to do some detective work. If you run into this situation again, I would suggest that you ask the guest about what version of OS X he/she has installed on their Macbook. If they are having this issue, then they probably don't have the latest and greatest version of OS X, which is 10.6.7. If they are not up to date, tell them to download and install the 10.6.7 combo update, which Includes all the improvements in the previous Mac OS X v10.6.1, 10.6.2, 10.6.3, 10.6.4, 10.6.5, and 10.6.6 updates.
For instance, OS X 10.6.3 addressed:
AirPort and wireless networking fixes for:
* general reliability for wireless connections.
* improvements to 802.1X reliability, including closed network connections, and WPA2.
10.6.7 address issues in the AirPort driver for certain devices.
Of course, you would still have to help them get connected to your network first with your manual method so they could go online and download the combo update. Or, you could download the combo update yourself, burn it to DVD and hand it to your guest who is having the problem with their Mac. Talk about customer service!
I'm betting that combo updating to the latest version of the OS will resolve the problem. If not, well, I tried! Best of luck!

  • Open network shows up as locked

I'm at a restaurant using the open network on my iPhone. My son also connects fine with his iPod Touch. So I try to connect with the iPad and the network, "Guest," shows up as locked and asks for a password. This is an open network that requires no password. We disconnect the Touch and the iPhone. Reboot the iPad; same deal. Why does only the iPad show this network as locked? Any ideas?

Try going to: Settings, General, Reset, "Reset network settings".
This will clear out any bad network settings (actually all network settings) and allow yoy to make a clean attempt at getting logged in as a guest.
The ipad will restart after you select this.

  • How to connect my iMac G4 to my network, it wont let me something about the password but I connect to a open network???Ask your question.

Hello I have been trying to connect my iMac G4 to my network but I can't. I have a secure network with a password and is not let me in but I can connect to an open network with no password??? anybody can help???

AirPort card in iMac G4 does not support strong WiFi encryption.
I think WPA is the maximum for that WiFi card.
If you have WPA2 in your WiFi network, you need to downgrade (not recommended)or wired connect the iMac G4.

  • Desktop icon for a file on network shows blank in Windows 8.1, if selected the second icon from the library

    Hello,
I have a strange issue on my Windows 8.1 machine. The icon for for an executable file on the network shows blank, if I select the second icon from the library. (File->Properties->Change Icon and select the second icon - This file has two icons)
If I re-create the IconCache.db, then it is showing correctly. But I do not want to do this every time.
    Regards
    Mattehw

It indicates your Icon Cache is corrupted and you need to rebuild it.
Open the command prompt window, type each of the following and after every command, hit the Enter button:
    cd /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local
    attrib –h IconCache.db
    del IconCache.db
    start explorer

  • Macs & Open Networks

    Ok,
I admit that I know very little about networking, and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong about any of this:
There is an open wi-fi network on our installation, and PC users are not having a problem connecting to it. However, my MBP and two iPod touch users can connect to the network, but do not have internet connections. We've tried disconnecting the power to the router for a little over a minute, and still no luck.
I have told everyone this is not an issue with Mac because wi-fi is a standard, and Apple adheres to that standard. Is it possible to lock out Macs only?
    It's an 802.11a/g network.
    Lawrence

Check in System Preferences > Network > Airport > Advanced >TCP/IP for the IP address. If it is 169.254.xxx.xxx, it is not receiving an IP address from the router (this is a self-assigned IP address).
If you have noticed that any new client joining the network shows this self-assigned IP address, it probably means that MAC addresses must be added to the address control list of the router.
If there's no access control list, check for firmware updates for the router.
If your IP address starts with 192.168.xxx.xxx, you can try the following:
You can find the router address in System Preferences > Network > Airport > TCP/IP. If you go to this address in Safari and it opens a router configuration page, you know that you're connected to the network and that Safari works, so the router may just need to be reset.

  • Wi-Fi on Open Network

    Hi there,
I just purchased BB 8900 3 days ago.. nice ..
For now I have no problem to use Wi-Fi/UMA using my home secured-network or/and at my office secured-network (note: both are Wi-Fi/G . But I have a problem when I go to an Open Network such as at the Calgary Airport.
When I tried to connect, my BB asks/warns me that the network is unsecured network and shows the certificate. When I click Continue button, my BB does not want to connect.
Could somebody throw a little light for me, please?
    Thank you for your assistance.
    Please welcome.... BleedingGum

    urumilton,
I tried again by going to the airport where there is an open-Network ... it said successful, but I could not get the green-checkmark, only a white-dash [-], and could not connect the net.
    No error signs whatsoever.
    Thanks.
    Please welcome.... BleedingGum

  • "Open Network Preferences" launches iPhoto

When I click on "Open Network Preferences", snow leopard immediately launches iPhoto 11 version 9.2 and starts importing system icons.  How can I stop this from happening?  There is not much to check / uncheck so I would assume it is burried deep in the OS X.

I click on the upper right icon on the title bar, select "Open XXXXXX preferences"
Which icon is this exactly? In mine, I'm only seeing "Open Network Preferences" from the Airport icon on the Menubar. What happens if you open Sys Prefs from the Dock? Does that launch iPhoto too? If not, then what happens if you select Network with Sys Prefs open and all the Preference Panes are showing? What happens if you right click on the Sys Prefs icon in the Dock and select Network from there?
What happens if you open SystemPreferences from Terminal with this command?
    open /Applications/System\ Preferences.app/
The main repository of system icons is located in
    System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle->Contents/Resources.
Right click on CoreTypes.bundle> Show Package Contents
If you go there, are you seeing any of those icons that appear with iPhoto? Don't mess with any of those. Just look.
Have you verified Disk in Disk Utility?
If you've done a reinstall, then IPhoto may be the next thing to look at.
One other thing to try; might or might not help: you could rebuild the Launch Services Database. In Terminal Copy/Paste
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Log out and back in or restart required.

  • AirPort with many closed/open networks.

There seemes to be a bug with the available networks listing in AirPort.
It lists all networks it can see, but fails to include information about wether or not these are open or closed/protected.
Thus if you find yourself somewhere with a gazillion WiFi networks, of whom most are locked, you end up spending an eternity before finding the open one(s).
Does anyone know of a way around this?
A filter for only listing the open networks would be great.
A small status icon besides network names like they do in every other OS I ever saw would be ok.

Ahh, I have Linux for that...
I have a couple Linux installs, but I don't/can't do much of what I need to do with them... not Net-centric here... don't even own a TV for that Matter, and since Music died long ago... not much to listen to anymore!
Let me get this straigh. Is it possible to use this device purely as a detector? That is, just plug it in to find the names of open networks, and then log on with the AirPort?
Don't even need to plug it in to find Networks and any encryption they use, it has it's own LCD read out... just need to plug it in to a USB port once in awhile to charge it up! Use it disconnected if you like to find and enumerate any network within range... back to the Mac and connect to the open one(s) it shows, or have it hooked up to the Mac, (works with a USB extension cable for even more usefulness, (has better range/speed than any of my Apple cards... no n cards here though)
Alternatively, plug it in, switch networks, find networks, then switch back?
Yes, or not switch back and use it to connect... it & it's APP give far more info/options than the built in one! Yet you could switch back to a Location with Airport only enabled and connect to whatever!
(I have had 2 or more Wireless connections enabled at once, but it's best to have different Locations with just one enabled... can't tell you the exact steps to have/get 2 Wireless going at once, though it is possible, yet a whole lot easier/simpler to just have one enabled per Location).
I'm amazed at how many apps "call home" at startup / whenever they feel like it..
Thanks for the tip about Little Snitch... I've tried it, but I found there are a few APPs that work around it somehow, several Apple ones too!
Every day that goes by seems that there is something new in the works to take control of MY computer away from me, I only trust MS less than Apple on this issue... George Orwell is rolling over in his grave I tell ya... covered that iSight with tape yet that can be controlled by sites you visit?

  • IMac C2D, AE, SPA3102, Open Networks Modem & Topfield TF6000pvrt

    Hi All,
Am hoping someone can assist me as I have run out of brothers-in-law who have more wireless & Mac expertise than myself !!!!!!
    Have the following hardware set-up:
    Mac Core 2 Duo
which is connected by built-in Airport Express card to:
    Airport Express Base Station
which is connected by Ethernet to:
Linksys SPA3102 VOIP Analogue Telephony Adapter
which is connected by Ethernet to:
Open Networks iConnectAccess 634 ADSL2/2+ Modem
which connects to ADSL1+ at 7.5Mbps download with 640K upload
Have followed the TF6000 manual - and have finally got it all appearing to be correctly connecting - namely - WLAN Status page shows:
    SSID:[my wireless network name]
    Network Type: Infrastructure
Channel: [varies but normally 6 or 7]
IP Address: [looks okay - is on same range as Airport Express]
    TX Rate: 54Mbps
    Security WEP
    Quality: 99-100%
    Level: 60+%
Despite this - I am unable to:
    a) access IP address of the 6000 through Firefox web browser;
    b) access IP address of the 6000 using FTP program;
    c) access ICETV Net Loader (latest version) on internet enters endless loop - saying needs to connect to ICETV server
Any assistance at this point would be greatly appreciated...
    Thanking you in advance,
    The Noobie - K-Man
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Problem resolved by getting rid of AE - appears it is not supported by Topfield unit

  • Network Manager and WPA

I am having a hell of a time getting my wireless working. I have gotten it working in an 802.11x network and an open network. My wireless card is the Dell 1505 draft-n card in my dell vostro 1400. I am using ndiswrapper with bcmwl5.inf driver. The router I am connecting to is a draft-n network but I am not sure if that would matter since it broadcasts b/g signal anyway.
I do not get any errors when entering my password in the gnome prompt, but it just times out. I have also tried the wpa_supplicant config (the manual way) with the same outcome. Any ideas on what to try?
I am launching networkmanager and networkmanager-dispatcher in the rc.d with !network

Please try netcfg2 - it is in testing, but as far as I'm concerned it is stable as a rock. Your problem might be related to WPA2 (I don't know if WPA-supplicant supports this)
Check the 'announcements'-section or the wiki for news/info about netcfg2

  • Apple Open Networks--Are they safe?

I had a personal network I was using to connect to the internet, until one day, that one was dropped and an open apple network took its place. I have no idea what/where this apple network came from or if it is safe to use. I cannot get back to using my own network no matter how hard i try.
it seems that the airport is using the apple network to connect to the internet and wants to use my personal network only as computer to computer network.
Are these apple networks safe, or should i call apple care to get my own network back?

Try the following if you use AirPort "Preferred Networks":
    o System Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort
o Delete all the preferred networks.
o Run the Keychain Access utility (located in /Applications/Utilities).
o From within the utility, sort by the "Kind" field. Remove any keychain entries with the Kind of AirPort, and then exit the utility.
o Create a new preferred network for the wireless network you want to connect to.
