Open new windows in a tab just doesn't work

It doesn't matter how I set the preference, either open links in new window or new tab, it ALWAYS opens in a new window
So that button in the preferences doesn't do anything at all!

You are referring to the Safari preference setting in the General section:
Open links from applications _ in a new tab in the current window
This refers to links in other applications, not links on web pages that you are viewing in Safari. With that setting checked, if you click on a link in Mail, Word, Acrobat Reader, or any other program that is not a web browser, the link will open in a new tab in the current Safari window.
Unfortunately, Safari does not have a setting to do what you want, i.e. to open links on web pages in a new tab when those links are coded to open in a new window. Your best bet is to submit feedback to Apple requesting that this feature be added to Safari.

• Always enjoyed being able to open new windows in a tab. However, after upgrading found I was no longer able to do this.

Have search all over web and tried every solution I could find; explored addons, restored, even reinstalled 19.0 but I am still unable!
It is very frustrating.
Would appreciate suggestions (never thought I'd say this but Safari is looking good!).
Thank you.

Let me see if I understand the original problem. You can checked the preference on the following tab to divert new windows to tabs instead:
Firefox menu > Preferences > Tabs
And that was not working correctly, either on all sites or a few particular sites.
Note that by default, sites that open a new window with particular specifications, such as the size, bypass that setting. To force even those windows into a new tab, you can use the about:config preference editor.
In a new tab, type or paste about:config and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
In the filter box, type or paste link.o and pause while the list is filtered.
Double click these and set the value as desired:
(A) browser.link.open_newwindow
3 = divert new window to a new tab (<u>default</u>) (checked*)<br>
2 = allow link to open a new window (unchecked*)<br>
1 = force new window into same tab
* First checkbox in Options > Tabs
(B) browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction - for links in Firefox tabs
0 = apply the setting under (A) to ALL new windows (even script windows)<br>
2 = apply the setting under (A) to normal windows, but NOT to script windows with features (<u>default</u>)<br>
1 = override the setting under (A) and always use new windows
(C) browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external - for links in other programs
-1 = apply the setting under (A) to external links (<u>default</u>)<br>
3 = open external links in a new tab in the last active window<br>
2 = open external links in a new window<br>
1 = open external links in the last active tab replacing the current page
Sorry, that's a lot of data, but hopefully it's reasonably clear.

• Why is firefox opening new window instead of tabs?

Until today when I clicked on a link it would open a new tab. For some reason when I click on a link now it opens a new window. I'm not sure why. I check my options and it's set up to open tabs. Yesterday it was opening in tabs. I just don't know what's going on, hope you can help.

Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

• Hyperlink set to open new window & jump to anchor tag, doesn't jump

I am generating Flash Help output in RH7.
We have content hyperlinks that are set to open in a new window (target="_blank") and jump to an anchor tag in the destination topic (a href="newwindowtopic.htm#anchor")
This works fine if I compile the file as is.
However, we edit the whtopic.js topic in order to remove the "Show" link that appears when you open context sensitive topics. We do this by adding the following code at the end or the addShowButton function:
setRelStartPage("ourstartpage.htm");
show();
Replacing the Show link worked fine in RH5 and it works fine in RH7. However, in RH7 when we replace the "show" link to have the TOC load when all topics are called (not just the start page), the ability to open a new window AND jump to the anchor tag is no longer working. When you click the hyperlink the new page opens, but only to the top of the page, not to the bookmark (anchor). The anchor jump does work if the hyperlink is set to open in the current window in RH7.
The issue exists in IE7 and Firefox.
Any ideas?

Hi there
Why are you editing the JavaScript file? Did you know that when generating FlashHelp you have an option to turn off the Show link?
Additionally there are ways to link to topics so the TOC is visible and synchronized. These are described at this link right here.
Cheers... Rick

• Firefox opens new windows instead of tabs on my mac laptop not on my PC

Firefox 3.6.8 opens multiple windows instead of new tabs no matter how I select the options in preferences. This happens on my Macbook Pro but not on my Windows PC.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).<br />
See Troubleshooting extensions and themes and Troubleshooting plugins
You can also try "Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults" on the Safe mode start window.

• Open new window from standard tab

I searched the forum for my question but didn't have any success.  Sorry if this question was already been discussed.
Is there a way to open a new browser window when you click on a standard tab?  My client wants a separate window to open when you click on a standard tab, similar to a pop-up window.  I'm sure this has been done but I don't see a way to do it directly.  Basically I need to go to a new page in the application and include "target=_blank" in the link for the tab.
I am using APEX 4.2.1
Thanks in advance,
John F

This is not a standard functionality of the tabs. Since tabs do an apex.submit('TAB_NAME') you will have replace that code with your own (with jQuery for example) to make this happen.
Perhaps a better approach is to use a list for your tabs.  Many people (myself included) we replace the APEX tabs with a list. Once you do this, your requirement becomes trivial because you can navigate to any page or URL and control the attributes of the link.
The technique is not hard at all and the tabs will look identical as the standard tabs (or you can make them look different of course).
This is an excellent presentation on how to do this *:
https://www.enkitec.com/about/presentations/alt_tab
Now...I would be remiss if I didn't say... this is an absolutely terrible idea from a UI stand point. I would strongly suggest using a Nav Bar element for this, for example.  Or some link somewhere else, use the Global Page (a.k.a. Page 0) to display it everywhere.
Thanks

• Won't open new window, only tabs

Previous version I could change option to open new window rather than tabs in 'tools' - 'options' This does not change anything. Also, it no longer saves 'home page'

Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.

You can check for problems with preferences and rename or delete the prefs.js file and possible numbered prefs-##.js files and a possible user.js file to reset all prefs to the default value.

• Full screen Safari doesn't open new windows

Hi,
In my Safari preferences I have "Open pages in tabs instead of windows" set to "Never".
When Safari has at least one window that is not in full screen mode, then links from other applications seem to open new windows perfectly fine.
However, when all Safari windows that are open are in full screen mode, then links keep opening in tabs in on of those windows.
How can I make Safari to just open a new window all the time, even when I only have full screen windows open?

Hi ..
Safari doesn't recognize:   mydomanin.direct   as a URL. That's why it's triggering a Google search.
That's why www. works.

• 'Open New Windows In A New Tab' is not working when the popup is invoked by Flash

I surf a lot of porn sites. And some of them invoke a popup if you click the play button of their Flash player. Even though I have FF set to 'Open New Window In A New Tab', this isn't working if a window is invoked by a Flash object. For example, if I want to watch porn clip on tnaflix<i></i>.com and click the Play button, then a popup window of livejasmin<i></i>.com comes up. But it doesn't open in a new tab. It opens in a new window, even though I've set the above mentioned option. This is very annoying. Please, fix it.

Thanks for the responses and sorry for taking a while to get back. I have been looking around but not sure where is the "about: config page." When I click on Firefox "about" there is nothing to configure. What do I click on? TIA

• Embedded links in emails won't open new window or tab in FF.

Running Mac OS X 10.6.6 and FF Version 3.6.12. I'm using Mail Version 4.4 as my email client and when I try and open an embedded link from an email, the link doesn't open a new tab or window. FF recognizes the link, but doesn't respond with a new tab or window. If I copy and paste the link into the browser the links work fine, so I feel like it's a setting or bug that has been changed somewhere somehow. This problem only happens when I try to click directly from the email. I've tried searching the preferences in both Mail and FF, but can't seem to find anything that fixes the problem. This issue started happening two weeks ago when I did the latest Mac OS X security update. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Hi everyone, I have Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I have been very very frustrated by this problem. [I could not create new windows, and anything that opens new windows, such as trying to see what Add-ons you have etc would not work]. I read about changing screen alignment to the top... I have one screen so the option does not exist. The above messages would not fix this problem. I searched hard and did find a solution in the end. I read stuff about removing Add-ons until the problem is fixed, but its simply not the case.
First of all open Firefox. next go to options: Help --- 'Restart with Add-ons disabled'. Tick the box for add-ons, restart firefox. Next go to Tools --- Add-ons. Next (In the Add-ons Manager' click on 'Plugins' on the left hand side pane. Look for the small blue writing that says 'Check to see if your plugins are up to date'.
Now notice it should say 'Missing Flash'. "For your safety, Firefox has disabled your outdated version of Flash. Please upgrade to the latest version". I followed this, reinstalled Flash and it now works as it always did, no problems. For people where the above fix didn't work, try this one out. Hope it helps people!
:o)

• Safari always opens new windows/tabs

Every time I click on a link Safari opens a new window or tab instead of just going to that link in the window that I am in. So when I close Safari I have multiple pages/tabs open.  It used to just go from page to page without opening new windows or tabs. What setting needs to be changed to get back to the single window?

I figure out what the problem is. I set the Google search to open link in new window, and then it can be opened in tab with one tap. Thanks for help!

Hello,
jstavene wrote:
can find nothing under the tools menu for private browsing?
Then it's not the same issue.
If Firefox is set to Never remember history, then you're in “permanent private browsing” mode, in which case the menu item Stop Private Browsing will be grayed out. Perhaps that's the case, and you don't find the menu item easy to see?
* Settings for privacy, browsing history and do-not-track
If that's not the case, then menu items can be hidden using the userChrome.css file. Check if it exists, and if it's there, rename it, then restart Firefox.
* http://kb.mozillazine.org/UserChrome.css
In Firefox Nightly (what will become Firefox 20), per-window private browsing has been added, so the menu item under the Tools menu is gone. It's been replaced by New Private Window under the File menu. I don't suppose it's very likely that you're using such a cutting-edge test version of Firefox though.
If that doesn't solve the problem, since it's a different issue, it would be best if you would ask a new question.

• Firefox won't save my setting for 'Open new window in a new tab instead' when I close Firefox.

When I am doing my internet banking I need to have the setting option for 'Open new window in a new Tab instead' Un-checked (disabled). Problem is this setting is not being saved the next time I open Firefox. That is every time I close Firefox (all open window and tabs), the next time I open it up again, this setting has re-enabled itself again. I just can't get Firefox to remember this setting for me.

Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode?<br/> A troubleshooting mode.<br />
You can open the Firefox 4.0 SafeMode by holding the Shft key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut. Or use the Help menu item, click on Restart with Add-ons Disabled... while Firefox is running. <br />
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut to open it again.
