Open next message after deleting?

After reading a message and then deleting it is there any way that I can have Mail auotmatically open the next message? Most other mail software (Entourage, Eudora) allow this?

This is a significant feature that's missing from Mail. Apple needs to get on it.

  • Opening next message after viewing or deleting

Please can anyone tell me whether it is possible to adjust mail settings so that the next email is displayed when one is viewed or deleted. At the moment, when one email is opened or deleted it is necessary to open the next from the list. There appears to be no facility to view next or previous emails when viewing an email.

I've found numerous threads on this topic and no solid answer if Mail can do this or not. I don't think it's just a Mail thing, but Entourage behaves exactly the same and it's pretty darn annoying after awhile. It's just counter-intuitive to every other email client I've ever used. Any help or a simple confirmation that "it just workes that way" would ge appreciated.

  • How can I stop mail on iPad from going to next message when deleting an email?

How can I stop the mail app from moving to the next message when deleting an email?
I like to keep messages as new until I can take action on them, but this just makes an unnecessary step.  I do not have this problem on my iPhone, but I am still running 5.0.1 on the phone and have the new iPad 5.1 software.

    Hi furiousbalancing,
With regards to deleting messages in Mail, you may find the following portion of the following article helpful:
To prevent the next message from being automatically selected (and marked as read), hold down the Option key when you delete a message.
    Mail (Mavericks): Delete messages
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14900
You can also use Command-Shift-U to toggle a message between Read and Unread (command should be the same in Mavericks):
    Mail (Mountain Lion): Keyboard shortcuts
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11679
You can also close the Preview portion of the Mail window, which should then require you to double-click on a message to open it and have it show as read (it appears the double click on the seperator may no longer work in Mavericks, but you should still be able to drag it to make it disappear):

  • Automatically Opening Next Email After One is Deleted

On the iPhone 5, when I delete an email, the next email automatically opens. Is there a way to change the settings so that after deleting or reading one email, it will bring me back to the main email screen / list rather than open the next email automatically? Thank you!

No, but you can delete emails from the Inbox by clicking Edit > selecting the email and then tapping Delete, you can also delete an email by swiping your finger across the email in the Inbox and then tapping Delete.
If you want, you can leave Apple feedback here -> Apple - iPhone - Feedback

  • Is there any way to make Mail open next message?

Is there any way to make Mail open the next message on the inbox automatically after deleting, forwarding o saving a message?
I mean, is there any way to, after reading a message, going to the next or previous message without double clicking the main inbox window?
I used (on windows) to read mail on outlook, or even on entourage for mac, and after I read a message, even if I deleted it, forward it, replied it, or even saving it on a folder, automatically the program (outlook, entourage, hotmail, etc) opened the next message on the inbox, but I am not able to find any way to make Mail do that.
Is there a way to it? Or should I provide suggestions to Apple?
By the way, no meant to prefer microsoft for this, I just think this is a cool feature for reading several messages one after another without going back to the main inbox page and double clicking the message to read...
    Thanks for any help

Down-arrow, Return. Return opens the selected message. I read through hundreds of messages without ever touching the mouse. Once you get used to the keystrokes, Mail is extremely efficient.

  • Opening Next Message

I just started using Mail as my mail reader and I can't figure something out. I'm sure I'm over looking something but it's driving me crazy. After I finish reading a message, I want to read the next message but there is no arrow to take me to the next message. Even if I delete the one I'm reading (which is not what I always want), it takes me to my list of messages.
I'd like to be able to go through all my messages without going back to the list of messages. I know I could do that in Entourage (and can do it at work in Outlook). I've looked at customizing the toolbar but that doesn't help.
    Thanks.

I think HH4 means that when Mail has a specific email message open in its own window, there is no way to go to the next message. (i.e. each email has to be double clicked to be opened in a window, in Entourage and Outlook there is a feature that lets you roll through emails in a full window view other than the window/frame that the list view of emails is in.)
I think the other posters here are talking about the message view frame at the bottom of the window below the list of emails. If you have an email selected in the upper frame and are viewing it in the lower frame, you can use the arrow keys to roll to the previous or next email.
Hope I clarified things, and I agree that I preferred the Entourage feature, but it is one of the things I gave up when moving to Apple's Mail, which is better integrated into the system.

  • Outlook 2013-Open Next Message when current message is closed

I have a user who said that in previous versions of Outlook she was able to double click on an email (to open it in its own window) then close it (not move or delete) and the next email in line would open up in its own window. I cannot find where this would
be setup at. I maybe assuming that a special rule was setup, but can that be done?
I have the "After moving or deleting an open item" set to "Open the next item." I even tried having a search folder filter out only new messages, which would I thought trick Outlook into thinking the message moved so it open the enxt
    item, but no dice.
Any ideas how I can make this happen?

    Hi,
The setting of “After moving or deleting an open item: open the next item” is only working when users move or delete the open item. It doesn’t work if you just open and close the item in Outlook. Here is an article descripted the details about it:
    http://www.msoutlook.info/question/217
If you want to open next item in current open item, we can add a Quick Access Toolbar of Next Item in Outlook as a workaround.

  • Open Next Message in Mac Mail

When faced with a long list of mail messages to read I would like to read the message and then move to the next without having close the message and double click on the next. I have hundreds of messages to review and am looking to streamline my activity.
This facility was available in MS Outlook Express and I am sure there must be something I am not doing right.
    MichaelQ

    Carolyn,
that is not Michael was asking for: I switched over to a MacBook some eight months ago and have been very satisfied with it after having used PC:s for about 30 years. These are awesome, and then some. However, having also used Outlook for a number of years, I've been conditioned to the functionality Michael described above: it is most convenient to maximize a single message window in Outlook and having read it, just click on the next message arrow, without having to 1. close window, 2. select next, 3. open it... you get the picture. Seems to be missing form Apple Mail, I'm afraid...

  • Recovering mail messages after deleting Account

After deleting and recreating my account, I lost all my Inbox and Sent messages. I did a back up before I did this (mbox). However when I try to reimport (Import data from "other"), I navigate to the messages folder (which I backed up to an external drive), but I get a message "Error: No valid mbox files were found". The messages are all there, in a folder as .emix files, and I can open them up when I double click. I realize that I can reimport them into Mail by the Move command, but it appears I would have to do this one message at a time (and I have hundreds!).
Is there something I can be doing here to remedy the problem?
    Thanks,
    Carl

If your accounts are POP and you didn't delete the messages, then I suspect they are still there, but Mail doesn't know it. So try this:
    1. Quit Mail if it's running.
    2. Go to ~/Library/Mail and delete the Envelope Index file(s).
    3. Restart Mail and wait for it to import your existing messages. When it's finished, Mail should function normally and all your email should be back where it belongs with any luck.

  • Lost all Messages after Deleting some.

Pop account using Mail v2.1 on an iBook G4 OS X (10.4.10) with 640MB Ram belonging to my wife. I'm a PC guy. Thinking of changing to Apple. :=)
My wife deleted a 'batch' (approx 50)of messages by highlighting them, clicking on Edit, and Delete. When she did that all the messages in that mailbox disappeared. She can still receive emails in that account as the New Message counter still shows when new messages arrive. She cannot see the new messages without doing a Search for them using part of the missing email address. When she does a Search the messages are there. There are 4656 messages found.
There is a small triangle next to that email account with the missing messages. When the triangle is clicked the triangle rotates, but nothing else shows. Nothing drops down below the account as I think it should. So the account is there, messages come in, the triangle rotates, the messages are not visible in that account without a Search of the Inbox.
I have attempted to Rebuild that particular mailbox, but the option of doing so is not available. 'Rebuild' is dull for lack of the proper term. She has another mailbox which does have the option to Rebuild so that is available in the program. I did attempt to Rebuild the Inbox under which the two accounts are located. That didn't do any good.
I attempted to Reindex with no change.
I ran the Disk Utility with no change.
When I look in Library, Mail, Pop(account), Inbox I see the messages she deleted. Nothing else. I can read them by double clicking on them which makes them open in Mail.
If this was a Windows program I'd reinstall it, but Mac programs are usually pretty steady.
I'm at a loss. The messages seem to be there, but not visible in the mailbox. Any suggestions?
    Aloha

The problem is probably that the mailbox has lost the .mbox suffix in the filesystem.
Report the names of the files and folders present at the first level of the ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/ account folder in the Finder.
In order to post the exact file names and avoid typing mistakes, proceed as follows. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/. With that folder open, if you’re looking at it in View > as List mode, first collapse any expanded folders so that the Finder only shows the files and folders at the first level. Now, do Edit > Select All (⌘A), then Edit > Copy (⌘C), and paste it in your reply to this post.
You’ll probably see an INBOX folder without the .mbox suffix there. If that’s the case, quit Mail and rename the folder to INBOX.mbox.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • Mail: do NOT select next message on delete/move

    Hi.
When using mail and I move a message to another folder or delete a message, the next message is automatically selected and displayed on the preview pane. I want to be able to delete and move a message without the following being selected, in other words, I do not want mail to automatically select the next message.
How can I do that? I did not find an option to "not select by default".
    Help is appreciated.

I don't think this behavior is unique to the move message command.
I notice that if I select a message, quit Apple Mail and relaunch it it will still try and remember the last selected email, although it will pull focus off the message the preview pane still shows it.
I don't know if there is anything you can to to not let Apple Mail refocus.  Maybe another Mail App?

  • Getting error for opening shopping cart after deleting user fron org struct

    Hi Experts
I am getting dump user attribute not maintained after deleting user assignment from org structure.
what can i do to retain old status. or atleas wants to avoid getting this dump ..while displaying this SC.
    pl provide any solution
    Regards
    Nilesh,

It is never a good idea to just delete a user assignment. What I find is that people just go on deleting assignments without considering the consequences. And later on it gives a lot of trouble to correct errors.
So never delete an assignment, but give it an end date (it's there for a reason!).
On to your problem: as said by someone else, get the user/business partner back into the organisational model (doesn't matter where actually) and there won't be an error. Try first with ppoma_bbp, if that doesn't work use pp01 - use pp01 with care and know exactly what you want to achieve else you'll end up creating a bigger mess than you started with.
If you have deleted the business partner completely you will have to update the database by hand hacking tables (a big reason never to delete a bp you are not entirely sure about).
    Regards,
    Robin

  • Next Message after Junk

In Mavericks (though this may have been before), using the classic layout, when I click on email10 and then click on (Junk) in the toolbar, the next message highligted and displayed depends on the position of the _previous_ email that had been selected.  So, assuming I have 20 emails email1, email2, ... email20, sorted by Date Received ascending (newest at the bottom).
If email20 is selected, then I select email10 and (Junk), the next selection is email11.  If email4 is selected, then I select email10 and (Junk), the next selection is email9. This can be distressing when junking a series of spam emails ... especially when it seems that the junked messages are disappearing (this may be due to a very large junk mailbox).
Is there a way to configure mail so that the direction does not depend on the previous selected email?
    thanks,
    Mike.

  • Strange Crash when opening Logic 9 after deleting control surfaces preferences file

Hey, I have been having issues where logic crashes when I save certain projects of mine, so I tried to find a solution and one that I had read said that I should delete the control surfaces preferences file named com.apple.logic.pro.cs.  I deleted the file, but it seems to have bricked my copy of Logic.  I have included a screenshot of what happens when I now open Logic, which requires a force quit to get out of.  If anyone has any suggestions of what I should do next I would really appreciate it.

Solved.  It was an issue with my prokit (I had also been messing with that unfortunately).  Found another thread and followed their instructions, back in action.  Feel free to lock this thread.
