Open office won't open word docs automatically

I downloaded Openoffice.org to open word docs. When I click on internet Word docs they don't open right away, I have to download to folder then open in Open org, is there way to set it up so it automatically opens it up or do I need download Word?

Hello Psychteacn,
The following article describes the process involved in associating particular document types with an application.

  • Since upgrading to Snow Leopard from V10.4.8 My copy of Open office won't load.  I've downloaded the latest version but it still responds with a "time out" message.  Anyone know waht's up and what I can do about it.  I can't even read my old files.

Since upgrading the OS on my MacBook to Snow Leopard my open office suite has died.  All the old files are still on the HDD, but even "finding" them doesn't help as they are opened, unhelpfully, in Text Edit, which loses some of the formatting.  I tried downloading the latest edition of Open Office, but it has made no difference.  Any suggestions?  Apple OS support has no solution to offer.

Found this, which might provide a clue:
I have had problems with 3.1 after installing Snow Leopard, with files created in MS Word - they come up with the text invisible (as though it's white, but changing the text colour doesn't help - by highlighting I can tell that the paragraphs are where they should be).
I upgraded to 3.1.1 but that did not solve the problem...
UPDATE: I found out the problem, it was nothing to do with Open Office, but rather the way Snow Leopard handles fonts. I went into the Font Book and found that a number of common fonts are now listed both in the "User" and "Computer" collections. I deleted the duplicate ones from "User" and now all works perfectly.

  • Whenever I want to open a template in Microsoft Word it automatically opens in Pages.  how do I get this to stop?

Whenever I open a template document in Microsoft word, it automatically opens in Pages.  THis has happened since I downloaded Mavericks.  How do I get this to stop and allow me to use Microsoft word templates in Miicrosoft word?

Right click on a template and choose Get Info. Find the "Open with" section, and change it to Word. Click Change All if you want all templates to be opened in Word by default.

  • Open a file that is word doc.

How or what do I need to be able to open a word document that was sent via email?  Trying to get my resume onto my Mac !!!

You can take one of these choices
    Free
Download Open Office, Neo Office or Libre Office
    Not Free
Buy Microsoft Office or Apple iWorks

  • After migration my ms office won't open

After using migration assistant my MS Office is visible, but won't open, no desktop info migrated, no i tunes . . . this was an older mac book to an air.

Since you say no iTunes it sounds as if Migration Assistant didn't finish. Is your MBA hard drive large enough to move everything from the old MB?

  • Photos in library when I open, but won't open in edit?

When I open iphoto all my photos are there, but when I double click to open into edit they won't open - also when I checked to see if a photo would open from DESKTOP PREFERENCES as DESKTOP PHOTO, photo wouldn't open and lost ability to open any photo (as desktop photo) from library. All photos are definitely in the PICTURES FOLDER in IPHOTO LIBRARY FOLDER. All this started happening yesterday when I was rearranging/trashing/renaming with BRIDGE/PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS?

    F:
The problem isn't with the iPhoto application it's with the library folder and the contents. The database file has been corruputed so what you are probably facing is creating a new library and importing the Originals folder from the old library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the rolls from the original.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same rolls as the original library. However dates on the rolls may be different but can be edited as you would the roll title.
Once this is completed you can delete the Originals folder from the desktop and the iPhoto Llibrary folder. If desired, you can keep the older library folder to try other fixes on it.
In the future I recommend you make a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto file after each import and after doing a lot of editing and organizing in the library. Then if you experience a similar crash all you need to do is replace the damaged database file with the backup copy and you'll be back to the same place in the library as when you make the backup. See the tip at the end of my signature.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Office won't open network files

As of last week when I open a file, for example .xlsx, Excel will open but only to the default start screen displaying recent documents and templates. If i try again excel will shut down and reopen to the start screen.
If I move the file to my local machine It will one without a problem.
I have reinstalled office, then repaired it (via control panel >> programs and features >> change) using both repair options.
At the same time this first happened "office document cache" played up and jammed my machine (multiple instances of the programme continually opening). I seem to have fixed this by "repairing" office (uninstall/reinstall of Office
    didn't work).
I have win 8.1 the network server is win 7 with a homegroup and 3-5 members.

    Hi,
Does this issue happen to any other members? Please first check that the user logo on has the enough permission to access the network files.
Also, please take a look at this thread which discussed a similar issue, see if the workaround there works for you.

  • Safari 4.1.1 opens but won't open a window or a tab

Safari 4.1.1 opens quickly without a window. When you try to open a window nothing happens. When you try to open a tab, the tab briefly opens and then Safari crashes. Tried reinstalling Safari to no avail. Firefox operates with no problems, but I want to afp files and I need Safari. I used Disk Utility to check permissions but no problems found. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

You may want to upgrade to 4.1.2 [Here|http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15675/apple-safari].

  • Some pages are very very slow opening or won't open in Safari 4.04

I have browsed thru the other posts and would try the DNS trick mentioned but there is no advanced tab when I open the System Network Preferences - I use Airport - or I'm not clear how to reset those numbers. My cache is cleaned out, I have reset Safari. My webpage for my band that I made on iweb - www.thestraydogsrock.com takes forever to loan or sometimes hangs up. Many webpages open right up and others open partially with the spinning logo and LOADING in the main bar. I'm a newbie so any help would be appreciated. Firefox does open all pages quicker at this point but I really prefer the Safari interface.

    Try this, instead:
    1. Go to Home/Library/Cookies and delete the Cookies.plist file.
    2. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
    3. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Web Page Previews and delete the contents of that folder.
    4. If you don't want to use the Top Sites or Cover Flow features, open Terminal and paste in this command:
defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSnapshotsUpdatePolicy -int 2
then press Enter or Return and quit Terminal
    5. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
    6. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
    7. Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete these files (if you have them):
    Downloads.plist
    History.plist
    Form Values
    LastSession.plist
    WebpageIcons.db
Then Repair Permissions, restart Safari and see if the problem continues.

  • "TDMS Open.vi" won't open file if not administrator

I have an app that I install and run from a subFolder of the program files folder, and there's a TDMS file that installs alongside it (it's a set of pattern match data that the app needs).  When the app calls "TDMS Open.vi" everything works fine if I'm logged on as an administrator, but I get an error 8 (file permission error).if I'm not.
When I'm not an admin, I can run the exe that's in the same folder - why can't that exe then load the TDMS file?  What am I missing here?

That's because you are used to LAVA.  We have trouble spelling TDMS or LVOOP on this forum.
At least someone's watching   Thanks Ben!

  • Error message when double-clicking icon to open document, won't open

My documents will not open when I double click their icon. They will open when dragged to the application icon or from the application itself. I get an error message if I try to open by double-clicking the icon. This is for In-Design, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. Is this a simple fix?
    Thank you.

Select one of the icons in question and do a Get Info on it.
You will be presented with the standard Get Info window telling you, amongst other things, what the default program is to open the file.
You can also select "Use this application to open all similar douments like this".
    See if that helps.
Normally the finder will do this for you so there may be other issues going on with your user preferences.

  • I suddenly cannot open my mailbox AND my computer won't shut down because the mailbox is open - it won't open OR close!

I suddenly cannot open my mailbox.  When I tried to restart my computer (thinking THIS might help), I get the message "The application Mail canceled shut down."  Any ideas?  Thank you!

Right click the Mail icon in the dock, then click option to force quit the mail program.

  • Firefox quit working (at all) after last two updates (browser window opens but won't open any webpages whether clicked from bookmarks or browser or typed into address window).

If the problem does not occur in Safe-mode then disable all of your Extensions and Plug-ins and then try to find which is causing it by enabling <u>'''one at a time'''</u> until the problem reappears. <u>'''You MUST close and restart Firefox after EACH change'''</u> via File > Restart Firefox (on Mac: Firefox > Quit). You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window.

  • Ipad wont open word docs

My ipad won't open any attachments such as word docs or jpegs. I have reset ipad, have re reset email account, talked with apple care, that was no help. Any ideas? All other functions of email work fine.

I have the same problem - only it is intermittent. Today both my mobleme and gmail accounts on my iPad received emails with a .doc attachment and showed it as a mime file with 0 bites. My iMac received the .doc account. But, at other times, I've not had this problem. The inconsistency is going to drive me to pound the iPad to bits with a hammer because I bought it to substitute for a laptop when traveling for work, so if I can't rely on it to receive emails, it is worthless to me.
I've read through 20 pages of discussions and so far, this is the first reference to the issue I'm having.
