Open path when outlining stroke...

If I have an object that has a large stroke set to align to inside and I outline that stroke, the resulting inner shape isn't a closed path. While this is easy enough to fix, I was wondering if there was a way to avoid it alltohether?

I forgot a step. Let me explain it step by step
Create a square with a 20pt stroke and no fill
Set align stroke to "Aligh Stroke to Inside"
Go to Object>Path>Outline Stroke
Select the resulting shape and go to Object>Compound Path>Release
Select the top/right anchor point of the inner shape and drag, you will have two anchor points not joined.

  • Error: OSEG when Outlining Strokes

I have a problem that consistently occurs in Illustrator CS4 on Leopard that only presents itself when I try to outline paths in dxf files opened in Illustrator that I think have been supplied from and Autocad type software.
I get the unknown Error: OSEG and only some paths outline.
The only way I have found to fix it is to outline paths individually till I find the culprit path or paths and and either find the point in the path that is causing the error and remove it (which can be time consuming), or just delete the path all together and re-create a replacement. It seems to me there is a problem with Illustrator being able to handle certain path information it encounters that is causing the error.
I have been doing the same thing in all versions of Illustrator since the very first version that supported opening dxf files (so quite a few generations of Illustrator, pre CS I think) and this is the first time Illustrator has presented the problem with these types of files specifically.
    Any suggestions?

I'm new to this forum, but I found this thread while googling the OSEG error I was getting when I tried to outline all of the strokes in an AI file (I'm using a Dell laptop, running CS4). All of my strokes were the same width, color, join (corner/smooth), miter limit, etc. Some of them had fill colors, the rest did not.
I was finally able to pinpoint why this error was popping up for me:
After successfully outlining the strokes layer by layer, and then path by path (once I found the problem layer), I discovered that my problem was just a few lone anchor points. Once I deleted those, the rest of the paths did just fine converting to outlines.
I guess the "outline stroke" function didn't like the single points, and they made it act all weird. Maybe it was because they weren't really lines or closed shapes, and therefore not "stroke-able"?
Also (not sure if this would have anything to do with it), the problem layer was the bottom layer, which Wade seemed to indicate was part of the problem.
    Anyway, hope this helps.

  • Generating path inside outline stroke.

I know that I cannot revert the stroke path including the weight once I turned it into outline stroke. But if there is anyway I can generate a path in the center of outline stroke? I don't care about the weighting and the color, I just want the path to be created there.

Isn't outline stroke is a closed path? So is there anyway I can do this in closed path?
I want some sort like this.

I tried your suggest and I get this.
    http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/847/blendoption.jpg/
but I need to scissor the center anchor of outline stroke to get the center. The problem is that I have a lot of multiple outline stroke that I'm sure that will consume my time, if I do this steps over and over again. Any faster way?

  • Alignment of strokes of open paths

I researched a bit, and I read there are solutions for this. I didn't quite understand it though.
If I simply draw a line and want to align the stroke to one side (instead of the centre) how do I do this?
    1) Giving a path offset effect.
I played with this, but didn't got me any result. I mean by giving the offset different values, I didn't saw the
        stroke moving to one side.
    2) Creating a new brush for this.
        That's a nice idea.
    3) Something by using an invisible rectangle.
At this moment, not one method have worked for me :-(.
What I basically want is to create those 'lineal' lines in the wing below. I already made an outline of the ribs and control of alignment of strokes gives me more options and flexibility to draw this.

You cannot set alignment options for Open paths in the Stroke panel. However, you could use the Width Tool to achieve what you are after, here's how:
    -  Select the path and with the Width Tool double-click on the end anchor point of the path.
    -  This will open the Width Point Edit dialog. Side 1 =  0 pt, Side 2 = 20 pt (say) and click OK.
    -  Do the same at the other end anchor point.
Now if you want to draw the same type of paths repeatedly, uncheck "New Art Has Basic Appearance" from the Appearance panel flyout menu. And keep drawing.
All the paths you draw will have the same appearance as the one you had selected initially (unless you select something else).

  • Illustrator 6.0 vector paths, when opened in Illustrator CC are now all broken into segments?

Illustrator 6.0 vector paths, when opened in Illustrator CC are now all broken into segments at key points (ie. a circle, has become a series of 4 quarter circle lines. Has anyone experienced this and is there a quick fix? I still have both Illustrator versions installed and can go back to use the original files, however I'd like to upgrade smoothly without having to redo all my vectors!

That is strange sounds like what happens when you open a die built in autocad, in illustrator. What happens if you paste a CS6 path into CC?

  • Has anyone else noticed that on CC the pentool does not allow you to create an open path? When I try to make two open paths(eg; two separate lines), the pentool connects them automatically. Also it does not automatically close a path. This is both a probl

This is a big headache having the pentool respond this way. Does anyone else have this problem? I have also installed CC 2014 on my home computer and have the same problem. so it seems to be a problem with the program.

    Hi Doug,
I'm sure I did not notice a difference in Esc key behavior simply because I have never tried to use the Esc key to stop the Pen Tool from picking up the current path.
I just tested with all these versions of Photoshop:  6.0, CS2, CS3, CS4, CS5, CS6, CC 14.x, and CC (2014) on my PC workstation running Windows 8.1.
    Observations:
Photoshop versions 6.0, CS5, and CS6 DO terminate the creation of the current path at the current point upon pressing the Esc key. However, Photoshop versions CS2, CS3, CS4, CC 14.x, and CC (2014). do not terminate the creation of the path upon pressing Esc, and will continue the path with another pen click.  Photoshop CC 14.x and CC (2014) may make it SEEM like the path creation is terminated because they hide the points, but the next click continues the path and causes all the points to reappear.
In every case holding the control key down (to temporarily choose the Direct Selection Tool) and clicking off the current path terminates the creation with an open path and allows the creation of another separate path.
No version closes the path (made the path into a closed shape) upon pressing Esc.  The only way I know to close a path is to bring the cursor back to the starting point, watch for a little o to appear next to the cursor, then click the mouse.
With Photoshop 6.0, CS2, CS3, CS4, and CS5 the response of the Pen Tool was instantaneous.  There was a definite slowdown / sluggishness in Photoshop CS6 and CC 14.x, which is now corrected in Photoshop CC (2014), which is again instantly responsive.
The only other thing I can think of regarding closing a path might be that when using the Pen Tool there are choices in the Options Bar about whether you're creating a shape or a path.  Are you ensuring you have that set the same way as you have had it set in the past?

  • Layer style stroke for open paths

I would like to be able to apply something like the Layer Style Stroke to open Paths non-destructively (so »Stroke path with brush« does not meet my, well, »needs« might be to strong a word).
Currently using a Path as a Vector Mask for a Solid Color Layer and applying Stroke to that causes open Paths to appear closed.

We are happy that you like the new features in CS6.   You can request new features from your ideas here: http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family  and people can vote on them.
Note: A shape layer stroke is a vector-based stroke and is applied only to shape layers. This is very different from the layer syle stroke.
You can control the settings for this stroke in the options bar for the vector tools (Shape, Pen, Path Selection, Direct Selection). This stroke is an attribute of the shape layer and will not cause the fx icon to display on the layer in the Layers panel.
A layer style stroke is a pixel-based stroke and can be applied to any layer that accepts layer styles (including shape layers). The settings for this stroke are controlled via the Layer Styles dialog.

  • Giving text outline stroke and path and uniting with other paths

How do I give Lucida handwriting a 2pt outline stroke, give it an outline path, then unite it with another shape path without the text losing it's outline stroke??  I can't bold Lucida handwriting as it only has an italic option, so need to give it an outline stroke to achieve a bold letter.  As soon as I give it an outline path and unite it to other shape paths the 'bold'ness disappears and it reverts to it's original size.  I hope this makes sense!  Any help would be appreciated.

    You are welcome, drive.
What you will be looking for is what is called a flowing script (probably a casual flowing script); script fonts are those remembling handwriting.
You may have a look at this website, where you can click (Formal or) Casual Flowing Script and see many different ones (which may give you an overview and possibly some inspiration),

or you can just search the web for (casual) flowing script font.

  • What is: Effect Path Outline Object & Outline Stroke for?

They've mystified me since I noticed them.
Lords of Illustrator, forgive your humble servant's blatant ignorance, but searches and experimentation have come up disinsightful (possible a new word) - what do you do with these?
(Right now, I'm making a focused effort to figure out everything I can do with live Appearance Panel effects - the more I know, the better I feel I set up artwork, non-destructively. It's great. Correct Answer will manifest happy dancing.)

(sweet, we can link Youtube's right in the posts, never tried it)
    I'm sorry man . . . I'm still mystified here . . . I can't get Outline Stroke to work like the above-linked Illy 10 Style Demo.
I took her Distort > Roughen circle, with Outline Stroke applied so that the stroke becomes an outlined path and the subsequent Roughen affects it like it's been outlined and tried to duplicate the outcome from scratch, but I can't do it!
Doesn't work me . . . yet look at the Appearance Panel and compare - they're the same.
    What is going on?

  • Maintaining Stroke Weight when changing path to brush stroke

Is there a way or an option I am missing to convert my regular paths to a path stroked with a brush profile, while maintining the proper stroke width?
For instance, I have a regular line with a stroke of 5 and then add a brush profile, which then converts the original stroke to whatever the brush was made at.
Can I change this? I am hoping I am missing something with an option or how I make brushes
    Thanks!

    dasikins,
When you apply a Brush to a path, the resulting width of the brush will be the basic brush width multiplied by the path Stroke Weight in points.
Presuming you wish to have a final brush width of 5pt and the basic width is 2.5pt, you will need a path with a Stroke Weght of 2pt because 2*2.5 = 5.
I wonder whether this is relevant or nonsense.

  • What is the difference between Object Outline Stroke, Object Expand..., and Object Compound Path/Make?

Could anyone explain the differences between these three commands? I created a circle with a stroke, applied all three commands, and ended up with the same thing, a compound path. Are there situations where this is not the case, or situations where one of these commands is more appropriate?

    Cleveland,
In the case of the straight stroke/nofill, object>outline stroke and object>expand seem to do the same thing.
In the Layers palette you can see the three different outcomes for Expand if you have both Fill and stroke ticked, only Fill ticked, and only Stroke ticked. Only the last one corresponds to Outline Stroke.
You should use Outline Stroke as the simplest one if that is what you need. Compound Path is for creating something with one or more holes from multiple paths, or for collecting paths to forrm the Clipping Path of a Clipping Mask. Expand is for the rest.

  • Outline stroke not working in CS6

so I just create a straight, uniform line and press Effect > Path > Outline Stroke... but nothing happens
not sure if I'm doing something wrong... or if there is a bug?
    thanks,
    Terrence.

    thanks for your reply...
the line has a black, 10 pt, uniform stroke on it.... I click the outline stroke command and nothing happens... an fx does appear in the appearance palette, but when I click the Outline Stroke item there nothing opens... every other effect opens a dialog window...

  • Outline Stroke – normal behaviour?

    Here's a strange anomaly I bumped into.
I drew a single open path with its ends crossing (see black line on the shot below).
When I outline the stroke everything runs into one instead of overlapping (see red shape).
Separate paths produce overlapping objects when outlined, so I would have expected the shape in my example to overlap itself.
It is as if a Pathfinder Unite has been applied.
Is this normal behaviour? Has Illie always done it this way?

    Steve,
Is this normal behaviour? Has Illie always done it this way?
It is always diffiult to determine whether a behaviour is normal or even rational, but she has always behaved that way.
I believe she sees a (self overlapping) path as one object and  is unable to decide a split into parts, even though there is an order of Anchor Points; and after all, a self overlapping path may have only one segment so it is not always possible to consider an order of segments.
Apart from that, a split would lead to separate paths, would it not (with coinciding ends that would be stroked if the paths were to be stroked)?
And if the order should be shown without splitting the path, would it not require some rather strange solutions, apart from giving her a splitting headache trying to figure them out?

  • CS3 Outline Stroke Parallel Lines Bug

    Hello everyone...
I'll try to explain my issue as best as possible. I am using Illy CS3 on Win XP Pro.
I am creating installation instructions for an electronic product and need to show wire routing.
I created an art brush of two parallel black lines two different ways (two black lines and two black lines with a white line between them) and am getting the same result when I apply the Object>Path>Outline Stroke command.
What is happening is instead of Outlining each of the strokes and individual paths, Illustrator is outlining the space between the two strokes as one filled, closed path.
Perhaps this is expected behavior. However, Illustrator CS4 (which I use at home on a Mac) outlines the stroke as I would expect it to with the two lines as individual paths.
Does anyone know of a workaround or any way for Illustrator CS3 to behave in a similar way to how CS4 handles the strokes?
    Any help is truly appreciated.
    Many Thanks!

I can't follow your description, and can't replicate the problem trying to follow it.
    > I created an art brush of two parallel black lines two different ways (two black lines and two black lines with a white line between them) and am getting the same result when I apply the Object>Path>Outline Stroke command.
Explain "two black lines and two black lines with a white line between them".
    Brush 1 built from:
Two parallel open paths, each with a black stroke?
    Brush 2 built from:
Three parallel open paths, equally distributed, the two outermost ones having a black stroke, the middle one having a white stroke?
When you say "situated between them" are you talking about stacking order (paths with different weight strokes stacked in same location) or spacing (three parallel paths distributed vertically)?
You say you've created these two ArtBrushes and are then applying Object>Path>Outline Stroke. Are you in fact talking about outlining the strokes to the artwork
before converting it to an ArtBrush, or applying Outline Stroke to a path to which you already applied the ArtBrush?
Describe EXACTLY, step-by-step, command-by-command, the simplest steps necessary to replicate the problem. Don't use ambiguous terms like "line". Use the terms of the program.

  • "Outline stroke" command makes an unwanted rectange around shapes. Help

    Hi,
I'm experiencing weird problem. I have an Art brush (scatter brush) which I sampled from a 5 tiny black circles to get the spray look. And it looks great as long as it stays as an art brush stroke. But when I select the path representing my stroke and doing "Outline stroke" it gives me desired shapes but along with empty bounding box-like rectangle around each of the sample. How to eliminate this problem? Thanks in advance.

Do you mean this is normal procedure in Illustrator? Create shapes from art brush, and then delete dull rectangles around samples? I'm asking because for example Corel never had such problems, everything is straightforward - you select an art brush, converting it to shapes, and you're done. No excessive junk, no strange bounding boxes around samples etc..
