Open PDF files in Firefox browser

how do you open a pdf file in OS 10.9 firefox browser?

Firefox uses a proprietary "PDFJSViewer" since version 20. If you have Reader installed on your Mac, and you want to use it instead:
Type "about:config" in the address bar.
You'llsee this:
Click "I'll be careful, I promise" and open the config page.
Type "PDFJS" in the search bar.
Look for pdfjs.disabled.
Click it, then right click and choose "Toggle" to change it to "true".
Close the config page. Click Firefox>Preferences (Cmd+,)
Under Applications, find Adobe Acrobat Document (or Portable Document Format [PDF])
Select Adobe Acrobat NPAPI Plugin or Adobe Reader NPAPI Pluign, depending on whether you have Acrobat installed or just the free Reader.

  • What can I do to rectify the situation in which Firefox will not open pdf files in the browser, even though I have already used all the help suggestions to no avail?

I have tried everything Mozilla has suggested. Still when I click on a pdf, I get the message that the browser cannot open a pdf. I have gone through the help protocol, and it does not work.
I have uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it, and still not able to open pdf files within the browser.
What else do I do, except go to IE or Chrome and just leave Firefox completely???

A possible cause is the presence of a PDF plugin from an older Adobe Reader plugin in the plugins folder in the Firefox program folder.

  • Can't open pdf files with firefox

After searching for a certain topic on Google I've tried to open the link with a pdf file, but nothing happens.
I receive an error message as if the Proxy that we use here at the company was refusing the connection, but in fact, I've already configured it correctly. This error started after the last update to Firefox 33.0.2.
I've already tried to change the configurations at Options > Applications > Portable Document Format with the option use Adobe Reader (default) and use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox), and also installed an Plugin "PDF Viewer", but nothing solved the problem.
Does anyone has the same problem?
    Thanks

    ■ Use '''Tools -> Options -> Applications ->''' <br> then look under content for Adobe Acrobat forms etc;
<br> note a choice of options is usually available
    * see [[Options window - Applications panel]]
Firefox is of course a web browser. <br>Acrobat reader is Adobe's program used to read and display the pfd files on your computer. Other programs may be used instead of Acrobat reader. You would normally have the Acrobat program and the pdf file present on the local computer, often both on the same hard drive, if you were opening individual pdf files directly with Acrobat.
Firefox uses a plugin so that it may use Acrobat to open pdf files and display the results within a firefox window or tab. If you do not have that plugin installed, or it is not enabled firefox may be unsure what to do with the file and offer to save it to whatever your default local download location is, without attempting to open the file in firefox.

You need a PDF add-on for Firefox.
Right now most work with FF 3.6 but haven't been updated yet for FF 4.0 just released
There is one that works with Google Docs
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/google-docs-viewer-pdf-doc-doc/
Funny, there is a version of Flash for Linux with 1% market share, but no PDF plug-in for the most second used browser in the world.

  • Cannot open pdf files in Firefox.

I cannot open pdf files in Firefox. (I can in Chrome).
I tried Menu - Preferences - PDF - Use Adobe Acrobat Professional. Also tried the same with PDF Browser Plugin 2.4.4
Clicking on a PDF link just opens a blank page.

When I enter about:preferences#applications <Enter> in the address bar, then for PDF it shows:
pdf File (application/x-download) ... Use Adobe Acrobat Professional
pdf File (application/x-pdf) .... Use Adobe Acrobat Professional
Portable Document Format (PDF) ... Save File'''
I would like all PDF's to open in Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional.
Right now none of the PDF's open at all, so opening in Firefox or any other viewer would be preferred over not showing up at all.

    Hello,
Can you please try some of the troubleshooting steps in the [[Opening PDF files within Firefox]] article? The problem is, unfortunately, a bit vague, so I think your problem may be solved by any of the solutions proposed in the article.

  • Why can't I open PDF files in Firefox?

I cannot get PDF files to open for viewing in Firefox. I am on Mac OS platform. This seems to be such an ongoing issue. I have followed the troubleshooting procedures to no avail. I like the look of Firefox better than Chrome, but I am switching over to Chrome because PDF's are so much easier to handle on Chrome, and I am sick of wasting time with this. Any last minute tips or advice?

The Adobe Reader plugin may not be working properly on Mac.

    Hi BalusC,
    thanks for your immediate response.
as you correctly pointed out its not XLS but a csv file that works fine.
I just tried my luck for XLS file, but as you said it does not work for XLS file as well. original file contained images which were lost
after the download and garbage characters got inserted in.
I will have a look at the code you have given link of.
but for reading/writing I am using inputstream/outputstream but doing that through reader and writer.
    like this
    br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(new FileInputStream(
    fileName.toString()), charsetName));
    and for writing
    outputStream = new BufferedWriter(new OutputStreamWriter(
    response.getOutputStream(), charsetName));
you mean to say I should not use reader writer?

  • Issue with opening pdf file from web browser

I have Acrobat Pro ver 6 and Adobe Reader 9.1 on a computer.  when my user tries to open up a pdf from the web he is getting the following error message:
"The Adobe Acrobat/Reader that is running can not be used to view PDF files in a WEb Browser.  Adbe Acrobat/Reader version 8 or 9 is required.  Please exit and try again."
What also happens is that Acrobat Pro ver 6 opens up and nothing is there.
I am not sure why he is getting that message since Reader 9.1 is installed.
Can any one shed some light on this for me.
This user needs to have Acrobat and Reader on his system.  I understand that there are issues with having both.
Also he has it set up so that any PDF is opening using the Reader 9.1.
    Thanks,

Your PC's default reader configuration for embedded PDFs has become confused, due to multiple Adobe PDF document solutions installed on one PC.
    Solution 1:
    Go to Start > Run
    Type regedit and click OK.
Browse to the following key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\Adobe\Acrobat\Exe
Make sure that the correct Default data value is set for the path where Adobe Reader or Acrobat are installed.
    The default installation values are:
    "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe"
    or
"C:\Program Files\adobe\acrobat 6.0\acrobat\Acrobat.exe" (not sure about this path.  Check on your PC to be sure)
depending on whether Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat is installed.
    Solution 2:
Configure the browser to use Acrobat or Adobe Reader as a helper application.
If you are using Firefox to browse the web, you can change this setting in Firefox by going to:
    Tools > Options
    Click on the "Applications" Tab.
The first item in the list should be "Adobe Acrobat Document".  Under the Action list, click the drop down arrow and select the application you want to read PDFs within the web browser.  Click OK, and you should be done.
If you're using Internet Explorer to view PDFs, try the below steps.
After you configure Acrobat or Adobe Reader as a helper application, the browser starts the helper application in a separate window and displays PDF files within that window. Acrobat and Adobe Reader both include a preference that lets you specify Acrobat or Adobe Reader as the helper application.
To configure Acrobat or Adobe Reader as a helper application:
    Start Acrobat or Adobe Reader.
    Choose Edit > Preferences.
    Select Internet on the left.
Deselect Display PDF In Browser Using [Acrobat application], and then click OK.
    Quit Acrobat or Adobe Reader.
The next time you select a link to a PDF file in the browser, a dialog box asks what you would like to do with the file. If you select Open It, the browser opens the PDF file in Acrobat or Adobe Reader (the helper application); if you select Save It To Disk, the browser saves the PDF file to your hard drive.

  • How can I open PDF files in Firefox? Nothing works no matter what I try. Other browsers open them fine.

When trying to open PDF file, screen just stays white and no content is seen. Status says "Done". PDF files will open with no problem in internet explorer, safari, and chrome. Nothing in Firefox which is my preferred browser.

I have heard that trying to use Leopard with AppleWorks can cause a corruption of the hard drive. Is this true?
No, not at all. AppleWorks actually runs better in Leopard on both my PPC & Intel Macs than it did in Tiger. I have found AppleWorks to be faster & more stable in Leopard on an Intel than any other system I've used.
I repaired permissions (both before and after installing Leopard) and have also dumped AppleWorks preference file, then restarting all to no avail.
There are more than one AppleWorks preferences to delete. Only deleting the .plist or just the files in the AppleWorks folder in Preferences will not work. They must all be deleted at the same time. Take a look at this user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly.
Deleting the preferences often fixes printing problems. Also, make sure you have the newest driver for your printer from the manufacturer's web site.
I did install Leopard as an update rather than wiping my HD and doing a new install. Should I delete AppleWorks and all associated files and reinstall AppleWorks and reinstall Leopard from scratch?
Possibly. I chose to do erase & install with migrating users & data for all of my Macs. I did try the upgrade with the MacBook Pro & it was a disaster with failure to start up after installing Leopard. I was willing to take the chance because everything on my MacBook Pro is on my desktop Mac.

  • I cannot open pdf files in my browser

Adobe Reader 10.1.1 will not open pdf files from the web.  Operating system:  Mac OS X 10.6.6.  No problem with previously downloaded files.

    Hi Vikram,
I have this trouble in Firefox, and Safari, and Chrome. I can no longer open .pdf documennts on line in any browser configuration.
I have tried serveral browser versions and serveral Reader versions, same result. Running Mac OS 10.6.8, just after a full rebuild and this is the most annoying result.
I do have the above suggestion checked, which I believe is the default setting, as I was always able to use a single cilck to open all .pdf files. Noticed this first with download of most current Reader. Currently have 9.5.2.
It began when I installed most current version after the rebuild of the OS.
Any help would be gratefully appeciated.
    Thanks,
    Jay

  • [Solved] Way to prevent acroread from opening pdf files in firefox?

    Hi,
I recently installed acroread from aur and now everytime when I click on a link to a pdf-file in firefox, the acroread plugin opens the file in the browser.
Before I installed acroread I got a dialog, where I could choose what to do with the pdf-file.
Under Preferences->Applications I selected "Always ask" for the application type "pdf" but obviously this option is not considered.
    Thanks for any ideas.

  • Cannot open pdf file with Firefox 11.0

Firefox automatically upgrades the version I am using. Since it was recently upgraded I cannot open pdf files. Am faced with a blank page. I went through some of the suggestions on these pages and when I opened the Tools window, there is a warning:
Firefox PDF Plugin for Mac OS X is incompatible with Firefox 11!
Is there a way around it? Or is it time to say goodbye to Firefox and move to Safari?

    When Firefox updates, it turns
    off add-ons that are not
    compatible with the new
    version. In addition, add-ons
    that may have been
    automatically installed by other
    programs without your
    knowledge (third party add-
    ons) have been disabled. For
    more info about re-enabling
    add-ons, see the link below.
