Open pdf hyperlink in Word (Adobe reader X)

I recently tested some hyperlink that one of my user did.
its a basic document, Office 2003. (.doc)
Whenever i click on the hyperlink to open a PDF, it take about 2-4 min for adobe to open up and show the document.
So i tested a bit to find out what is happening and this is what i found.
Word 2003 or 2010 + adobe X = 2-4 min to open a hyperlink from the word document to the actual PDF file.
there is no spike in the CPU or any indication that adobe is working. The system just stay idle for some time.
if i replace adobe X with Foxit reader, everything is fine.
if i replace adobe X with adobe 9.4, everything is fine.
if i replace office with openoffice, everything is fine.
i Tried on 2 different system and i came with the same results.
both test system were Win XP pro SP3
All adobe installation were set to default. No settings were changed after.
So right now i had to downgrade some adobe X installation to make it work correctly.
Is anyone else experiencing this problem ?

I've noticed the same thing on our web www.lantmateriet.se. Do you know any way to solve the problem?

I can't open pdf files even though adobe reader X1 is downloaded.

May seem like an obvious question but, did you install it after you downloaded it?
If so, how are you trying to open these files and what happens when you try?

  • 2 medical softwares often can't open pdf, just after the adobe reader install but IExplorer succeded

    Hello,
We have two softwares ( medical application) which open pdf via adobe reader XI.
Theses softwares often can't open pdf, just after the adobe reader install( using adobeArCleaner+Customisation Wizard XI).
At this point Internet Explorer is ok to open pdf with adobe reader...
We have to launch manually adobe reader once on the computer to make the two applications to manage openning pdf
Launching adobe reader seems to finish the installation...
Did the editors have to put an "option" when they open pdf ( to act like Internet Explorer...) ?
    Thanks

I am very glad to have a so rapid answered!
    Sorry I was not precise...
    When the file should open,
for one application an error is happening,
for the other application which is a "web" application, an other window ( not "web") opens with adobe reader and the pdf document ( the expected behavior is to open adobe reader and the pdf file in the web window already opened)
I think that the file association is ok, if we double clik on a pdf, adobe reader is opening and then the file is opening  in adobe reader window...
If I open Internet Explorer and I search for a pdf on the web, It is openning in the same window web.
But something seems not finish for the medical softwares...

Why the question marks? Can you open PDF files or not? You don't need Firefox to open PDF files.

  • Is there any way open .pdf files except through Adobe Reader?

Everytime I try to open a .pdf file by clicking on it, it somehow is converted to a .doc format that won't open unless I 1st open Adobe Reader.  This is a tedious extra step that doesn't happen on my other computers.
    How to fix that problem?

That sounds like your file association is corrupt; you need to assign .pdf files to Adobe Reader instead of Microsoft Word.
If you need help with that, tell us your operating system.

  • Cannot open .pdfs via Outlook or Adobe Reader, can't open Adobe Reader, can't uninstall it!

We have a new office desktop that will not open .pdfs or open Adobe Reader.  The version on the computer is 9.5.2.  When I try to install updates or install Adobe XI, the installation process stops before completion because it says Adobe 9.5 is currently being open.  But we can't open Adobe 9.5, and task manager does not even show the program as being open.
I have tried uninstalling the program, but have been unable for the same reason.

You can try using this tool to remove all traces of previous version(s) of Reader:
    http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html
Then, you may download the offline Reader installer from
    http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/
After downloading, restart your computer and run the installer before doing anything else.

  • Why can't I open pdf files allthough having adobe reader 9 preinstalled on my new windows 7 laptop?

    Hi!
I think my question might be simple to answer, so please if you read this give it a try...
I just bought a new laptop with windows 7 on it. Adobe Reader 9 was allready installed. I wanted to open simple pdf files, but I got the message "Adobe Reader ?" in an empty field that pops up.
Why can't I open pdf files? Do I also need to install the Adobe Flash Player as well?
I would be very glad if you could give me a hint.
    Thanx

It appears as if Adobe Reader is not correctly installed.  Try installing the latest version 9.2 from http://get.adobe.com/reader/ - make sure that you uncheck any unwanted software bundled with the download.
P.S.  no, you don't need Flash Player to open PDF files.

  • Firefox is unable to open pdf files even with adobe reader

i am unable to open pdf documents with firefox . i have installed latest version of adobe reader for firefox but still i am having problem. older versions of mozilla do not have this problem

Try running Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] If it functions correctly, then one of your add-ons is the culprit.

  • Why can't I open pdf documents after using Adobe Reader security?

I have been able to open pdfs perfectly well up until I changed the security settings on Adobe Reader.  As I read somewhere that Apples have an inbuilt pdf reader I trashed everything Adobe, but still can't open pdfs.  Tried using Preview  to no avail.
Is there some other way of opening pdfs without reinstalling Adobe?

You didn't think of mentioning that in your first post?  So it's not Adobe Reader or Preview you are having problems with.  It's pdf's in your browser!
For Safari, you need to remove the adobe pdf plugins which Adobe apparently screwed up.  You need to remove:
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/AdobePDFViewer.plugin
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin
I think you can "get away with" removing just the second one.  But both for sure should allow you to open pdf's in a browser (all browsers).

  • How to open PDFs by default with Adobe Reader?

    Hi everybody!!
I used to have Adobe Acrobat but I don't have it any more.
When I had Acrobat the PDFs in my sistem and the PDFs in the web were opened without problems by Acrobat but now I just have Adobe Reader (not Acrobat) and the PDFs in my sistem and on the web are not opened and can't read them...
Even the PDFs in my sistem don't show the PDF icon as when I had Acrobat installed.
What could I do to be able to open PDFs by default with my Adobe Reader?
Thanks a lot for your help.

Right click on a PDF file and select Open with, then select the Always open with button. Search for Adobe Reader and go from there. This is an OS feature, not a Reader feature. For further questions about Reader, check the Reader forum.

  • Trying to open PDF in email with Adobe Reader app

Citimortgage sent me a disclosure statement by email. I'm trying to open it on my iPad using the Adobe Reader app, but this is all I get.
To view the full contents of this document, you need a later version of the PDF viewer. You can upgrade to the latest version of Adobe Reader from www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html For further support, go to www.adobe.com/support/products/acrreader.html
    Help!
    Jennifer

George is correct. XFA forms (which the mobile Reader does not support) are often built with a generic error (like the one described) page that displays for Readers that do not support these document types.

  • E-mail program won't open PDF attachments automatically with Adobe Reader

When I get e-mail with PDF attachment I get a message saying I must open only from trustworthy source.  Then I click it open, but it won't open.  So I click save, and it is saved to desktop where I can then open it with Adobe Reader.  I prefer that Outlook automatically opens it with Adobe Reader when I click it just once.  I have updated Adobe Reader from 9.0 to 9.3.2, and it still won't work,

I have had the exact same problem, i use windows mail because my computer was unable to run outlook for a reason i can't remember and this is dead-set exactly the process i go through constantly. I have unistalled/reinstalled adobe multiple times.

  • Why won't Safari open PDF-documents after uninstalling Adobe Reader?

    Hi.
I wonder why Safari won't open a PDF-document after I uninstallet Adobe Reader. Prior to my installation of Adobe Reader, Safari opened PDF's without any diffyculty.
I've tried to reset Safari but it didn't seem to help at all.
    What do I do?
    Thanks
    Mike

There might be a residual plug-in interfering with Safari's PDF opening capabilities.
Installed plug-ins are listed via Safari > Help menu.
    They are located in
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    and
    ~/Library//Internet Plug-ins
    (tilde is home folder)

  • Cannot open pdf files or uninstall adobe reader

I downloaded Reader X but could not open any pdf files so tried to reinstal.  I got the message that it was already installed so tried to uninstall but could not do it. The message was to say that it was using certain files and to close explorer.  Dont know how I do that if I am using it to contact adbobe!!!!  I now have a program which does not work and I really need to be able to get these pdf's downloaded now.  Does anybody know how to get rid of the adobe from the system.

The easiest would be if you close all applications, especially web browsers, then try to uninstall again.
If that still fails, use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459) to remove the current Reader installation, then try again to install.
