Open Reader Problem

I have Reader XI (Version 11.0.03) loaded on a new iMac OS X Version 10.8.4.  I cannot open Reader by double-clicking on the Reader icon in "Finder" or on the short-cut icon on the Dock.  When I right-click on the short-cut icon, I receive the following:
Options:  Keep on Dock; Open at Login; Show in Finder
     Show All
     Hide
     Quit
There is no "Open" option available (as there is on other Apps).
Reader does open when I open a "PDF" file, however.  I just cannot open the Reader app and, subsequently, search and open an existing "PDF" file.
I have checked my ownership of Reader on Finder/Go/Computer/Applications/Adobe Reader/Get Info.
Thanks for the assist,
Ed

"There is no "Open" option available (as there is on other Apps)."
Read back a few lines in your post...
"Options:  Keep on Dock; Open at Login; Show in Finder
     Show All
     Hide
     Quit"
It's already running.
Command+Tab will show it as a running app and you can cycle to it by pressing tab or scrolling your mouse to switch to it. When you see Reader in the menu bar, you'll know you're there.

  • ITunes will not open in Windows 7 for one User. All I get is the Licence Agreement pane and when I click YES nothing further happens. I have set up a second user and iTunes opens without problem in that User window.

Clearly something is blocking the main user(administrator) from opening the iTunes programme and I cannot find a solution.

Many thanks for your reply. Yes I carried out the suggested procedure in safe mode , which did not resolve the issue and so this is what led me to set up a second User account. iTunes opened without problem in this second account and so I looked at the User-specific troubleshooting but I just could not locate the iTunes Preference files no matter how much searching I did.
I also tried uninstalling and re-installing but the problem persists. Would be very grateful for any further advice.

  • Reader X: DDE Open command can open Reader but not open a specified target PDF

Once again Adobe has issued an update which breaks existing business systems. After the fiasco of Reader 9.3.4 failing to open external files such as SWF or XLS, the new Reader X is not opening the requested PDF when called via DDE.
The Reader X always opens with a "What do you want to do?" panel, offering various manually selected actions. What is required is for the Reader to open the PDF file specified in the DDE call, as it has done in all previous versions.
Is there a fix for this, or an alternative calling mechanism?
We have an external application which allows students to navigate around the various modules and lessons within their course. When they select a lesson, a DDE call is raised to request the appropriate lesson PDF to open in Reader. The external program uses a small floating, semi-transparent form, which allows easy lesson selection, automatic bookmarking and other functions. This functionality could not be achieved with simple PDF full of hyperlinks to the lessons.
The further problem is that many hundreds of these various courses are already in use by students around the world. We cannot easily prevent them from accepting upgrades to Reader X, nor supply them all with an alternative control method. All we can do is suggest anyone experiencing this problem to dump the new version and download version 9.4
Has anyone any ideas to fix the broken functionality in Reader X, or a satisfactory way to work around this failure ?
    Thanks

    Thanks for your contribution Dave.
The DDE call should not be case sensitive. Various writings on this page quote Acroview and AcroView, but I have tried various combinations and results are the same whatever case is used. It is acroviewR10 which I have used with success in my updated calls.
ManishPali has not responded to my question of where he found these R10 and A10 settings, but if these were intended to be the only access, they can give rise to even more scope for program failure. The majority of users will have only the free Reader, but some may have the full Acrobat program, and not Reader. So when we use 'acroviewR10' in our call, anyone with only Acrobat will again find the program failing.
Also of note is that using 'acroview' works in a call to open Reader X, but will not work to close Reader X or to open a PDF within Reader X. Why is one service still recognising the plain acroview, but the other services require the R10 suffix?
Dave says that this should be fixed in version 10.0.1, but is this just a hope, or a statement of intent from someone involved with Reader development? If this is fixed, how long will it take for that next release to be in common circulation?
In the meantime, we are preparing patches to send to any students who experience this problem, and also upgrading the master CD for each Course to add an option to the Config menu, allowing the user to select Reader X or not.
I think the developers at Adobe believe every user is within a corporation with centralised IT control, so everyone has the same, known version of any software and can be given new versions or advised of issues at will. In the real world, there are millions of independent users scattered across the globe who have no IT support and often have limited knowledge. For example, it is not uncommon to ask a user which version of Windows they are running and be quoted their MS Office version instead. Any extra complication in setting up or using their new software is a significant problem likely to result in lengthy support calls, and a loss of confidence in the product.

  • Trouble opening reader?

When I try to open reader, I have a blank screen.  The download tells me it has been successful.  Can someone help me with this problem - I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.
    Thanks

You may start by using this tool to remove all traces of previous version(s) of Reader:
    http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html
Then, you may download the offline Reader installer from
    http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/
After downloading, restart your computer and run the installer before doing anything else.

  • When i open reader, it freezes, also i only get half a screen

when i open reader it freezes, and only the bottom half of the screen is visible.  I have to use ctrl, alt, delete, to close it

My solution to my original problem of stopping FF from intruding with an erstwhile search doesn't work. Firefox IGNORES my settings to NOT check for updates to addons (letalone disabled and unwanted addons). It continues to check when I reopen FF. What a PITA>
Further, it gives me no solution. Just takes more than a minute of my time waiting for it to stop.

  • MS Access database opens read only

An Access application with linked databases opens read only, but sometimes is editable. The system was developed in Access 10 on a Win 7 machine and migrated to a standalone laptop running Win 8 and Office 365.
The Access 10 has no problem in operating the application. The Win 8 laptop randomly opens the application read only. I have reviewed Trust settings and there is no difference between the different laptops and systems.
Is this a common problem? Is it associated with Win 8? Is it associated with Access form Office 365? The application is crucial to the business and we are getting way behind because we don't have a reliable or useful system. Last year the same application
ran satisfactorily on Win 7 and Access 10.
I would welcome some thoughts leading too a solution.

    Hi,
Did you get the error message like "You are trying to open a read-only database". If yes, this issue may be due to the permission of the Access database. If we migrate the Access database from Access 2010 to Access 2013, the user/account's permission
may be changed with different Windows operation system. We need the full control permission of the Access database. To workaround this issue, follow these steps:
On the desktop, double-click My Computer.
Locate the Microsoft Access database that you moved.
Right-click the database name, and then click Properties.
In the Properties dialog box, clear the Read-only check box under
    Attributes.
Click OK to apply the change.
    Open your database in Access.
Please note: Make sure the user has full control of the root folder.
If no, please tell us the whole error message, we'd like to do further troubleshooting.

  • Open NAT problems with Xbox One .

When I first got my 1900ac I used Media Priortization to get an open NAT for Call of Duty Advanced Warfare on my Xbox One ; prioritizing the Xbox . It worked fine for about 6 months until I changed cable/net provider to Nextech in Ks. This company uses the 1900ac to hook up it's system for all it's customers ( since I already had one they're using mine ). Unfortunately I'm unable to get an open NAT in this game anymore ; I've tried just about everything , NAT forwarding , triggering , Media Prioritization . Nextech support & Xbox Live support , useless . Tried Portforward . com , nothing . Forwarding port 53 cuts off net connection & doing the static ip change for Xbox didn't help . Almost everything I've looked at seems out of date & I'm at my wits end . It would seem by now Linksys should have solutions available , any ideas ?

Thank you chin_pamz13 for your response . I tried to check if my modem had a public or private ip address but I'm not sure how to do that ; I've read about double NAT's elsewhere . Regardless , I think I've finally found a solution that seems to be working so far . I went to the website " tech - recipes . com " & found an article , " Xbox One open NAT " by Aaron St. Clair . I tried his first suggestion about port triggering , with extra ports I had'nt seen before . That did not work for me so I followed his instructions for putting the Xbox in the DMZ & it's working ! I think my problems from before were the result of improperly setting up the static ip address for my router & Xbox . Previous instructions had me changing the ip in the console along with the router ; Aaron said not to do so in the Xbox , let the router do the work it's supposed to do & make sure the settings in the console are on automatic . In the router at the DMZ , I was'nt sure how to proceed , but at the bottom is a section labeled DHCP reservations list ; clicked on that , saw XboxOne , clicked on that & it filled out the MAC address above for me . Then I went to the Xbox network settings , advanced settings & clicked " automatic " at ip address , subnet & DNS . I checked mutiplayer connections & did the " hold bumper & trigger buttons " trick & finally got an open NAT ; fired up CoD Advanced Warfare & got the open NAT there also . I may have screwed up when I did the port triggering but since the DMZ fix seems to work I'm going to leave things alone . Hope this helps others with open NAT problems .

  • Mavericks cannot open/read RAW files

Just upgraded to new MacBook Air with Mavericks. Moved my photo library over, and cannot read any of my RAW photo files (neither Canon CR2 nor Nikon NEF).
System is up to date, including latest Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update (5.04). Based on several posts I found, I already tried to remove the Camera Raw Update and install older versions, restarting the machine. No change.
OS (Mavericks) does not open/read the files with either Preview or Quicklook - shows a black background. Applications don't open/read them either (tried both Aperture - which says "unsupported image format" despite rebuilding the library and trying all other things - and iPhoto - which also just shows a black background image), but since Preview doesn't even work, it's clearly an OS problem.
I'm very frustrated... Most grateful for any suggestions.

btw - i also seem to be missing the "Raw.plist" file. does anyone know where it is? it used to be under "/System/Library/CoreServices/RawCamera.bundle/Contents/Resources/Raw.plist" but it's no longer there. I imagine this may be related.

  • Can't open Professional after opening Reader

I have both Reader and Professional on my computer, and I recently upgraded my Reader to 8.0. Since then, the two programs have not been working well together. When I open a file in Reader, I cannot open anything in Professional. I can't even open the program - clicking on the shortcut on my desktop, or trying to open it out of the program files, will just bring up Reader again. If I restart my computer, Professional will work again - but then I can't open Reader. I don't really need Reader, but now I'm hesitant to just uninstall it, because I'm not sure if it will affect Professional somehow. Can anyone help, or at least tell me what's going on?

To get Acrobat to open, you have to go to the task list and disable AcroRd32 (I think that is it). Anyway, there is a resident part of Reader that is left running once you open and close Reader. That is what is causing the problem. Once you close the resident part, you should be able to use Acrobat. You need to be careful since the resident part is often started with the machine startup, so you will have to disable it every time you start your machine.
The best process is to uninstall Reader as suggested. The problem is that you will either have to reinstall Acrobat or repair it. Uninstalling Reader will likely break Acrobat due to some shared files.

  • Cannot open Reader 80. or uninstall or re-install over existinge 8.0

Here's the window message I get when I try to open Reader 8.0, "Problem with Shortcut" Then in the window, "This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, if not contact..."
I get the same message when I try to uninstall through Add or Remove Programs in XP Pro.
When I try to download it over the existing install I get a message telling me "Adobe Reader 8.1.2", "Error 1714. The older version of 8.1.2 cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group."
    Please help.

Follow the advice of "expert user"!
I have just gone through the same problem of uninstalling reader in order to re-install it. The MS Windows Installer Cleanup Utility worked perfectly. Other attempts manually removing as suggested in Adobe's kb400769 had already failed.

  • Slow opening Reader on VPN

    Hello
I have this issue where while on a VPN connection, Reader takes 20-60 seconds to launch. I have pinpointed the problem to the recently opened files. While on the network directly Reader opens within 2 seconds. I then open 5 files on our DFS drive. I then reboot off the network, connect through VPN, at which point opening Reader (directly from shortcut) takes 20-60 seconds.
If I reduce the number of previously opened files through the preferences to one file, the launch time decreases to 7-10 seconds.
I have tried different network connections, multiple machines and different files. the result remains the same. This problem does not occur in Acrobat Standard. I have tested Reader 11.0.0 and reader 11.0.5 with the same results.
    any help would be appreciated
    thanks

Reader 11.0.6 that was released last week should resolve this slow-launch performance issue. Please update and test. Thanks!

  • T 420s cooling air coming out is very hot, finger print reader problem

I am living in ruwais, abudhabi.i bought T 420s in last June from LENOVO  authorized distributor. Model number is 4174-KK4 and the sr no ***.
Sometime the cooling air coming out is very hot, unable to keep the laptop on the lap.
The cooling fan also replaced still the temperature is high.
After replacing the fan I noticed that I noticed one of the screws was not fixed, I asked them to fix it, then they fixed it.
I traveled back to my home 240 KM from the  authorized distributor service  center. when I started the laptop, the fingerprint reader was not working . Then I traveled back 240 KM to the  authorized distributor service  center to fix the issue. They fixed the fingerprint reader problem.
Then now the SD card reader is not working. I was asked to bring the laptop to the  authorized distributor service centre.
Can any one experience the same type of problems  with T 420s the cooling air coming out is very hot, finger print reader problem, card reader not working?
The authorized distributor says for the service they can only cover 50 KM form the  authorized distributor service  center to the customer point, what is the conditions for the On site warranty ?. I am living 240 KM away from the authorized distributor service center from whom I bought the laptop.
Moderator comment: Serial number(s) removed to protect member from mischief.

Well clearly after the first incident. You need to check and us it verifying everything is working before leaving the service center or town its in. Go to a coffee shop and spend time using it and test each option is working.
When the notebook its opened the finger print reader, card reader etc may not be connect properly or connectors not snap fully and disconnect. Mouse ultranav I have heard may also. But clearly you assume too much and you need to spend the time testing its working before leaving.
These service center are only paid a fixed amount so they won't spend anymore time then they have to and address one problem you brought it in for.
As for heat out put and over heating. There are many threads on these systems you can find and read about.
    Advice:
    - install Core Temp, this will monitor and display on the task bar you CPU core temp and you can see CPU load & Temperature at a glance if it approaching or staying near the max levels which will kill the CPU and/or motherboard due to cooking it. Its free just be sure to deselect any additional software from installing during the process. I use it on my notebooks. If the system is running high core Temp all the time you need to have it resolved or it will die and most likely out of warranty and/or your data will be lost if you don't have a backup as well. http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/
    - use a laptop cooler. Its a flat pad you sit the laptop on you lap or table with usually two cooling fans that plug into the USB port for power. It will help cool the base of the laptop and other components inside will not be as hot. This will do nothing for the CPU temperature though.

You have Acrobat Pro on your system. It will try to open PDFs, and of course it will fail. You must uninstall it. Then, you will need a PDF reader. So install Adobe Reader. That seems quite simple, but perhaps something is wrong. If anything goes wrong with these two steps (1) uninstall Acrobat Pro (2) install Adobe Reader, then please let us know the details.
