  • Show full file name in File Open Recent Files menu.

I would like to be able to see the full file name in the File > Open Recent Files menu. With long file names, I cannot differentiate between the file I want to edit and the series of images I exported - they all look the same when truncated. (Mac)

I'm working in CS6 on Windows and wondering exactly the same thing. I usually export PDFs or JPGs of current work using the same or very similar names for tracking purposes but trying to open recent files then becomes a game of trying to figure out which of the various identically-truncated file names actually corresponds to the file I want to reopen.
Is there a way to get Illustrator to display the FULL file name in the Open Recent Files menu?

  • "open recent file" menu item - 2 issues / aspects (Mac & Windows)

regarding the  "open recent file" menu item in the File menu.
    1)   should have a way to "clear recent items".  Most software solves this by appending an item "Clear Recent Items" to the bottom of the list of aliases that springs forth from the menu.
    2) Further, in the preferences it should be able to be set to 0 to prevent the function entirely, not just natural #s 1-99.  This is the case in Windows Adobe REader, and on the Mac it was the case the last time I was able to check, but due to the bugs in 9.1.x regarding the ability to handle a case-sensitive file system I haven't been able to even open the preferences on the mac for a while.

    Michael:
    Thanks for your quick reply.
Please note that this issue:  "open recent file" menu item that is not clearable, nor is the system preference able to be set to retain 0 files,
has absolutely nothing to do with the file system issue.  It is just a design choice (or oversight or bug depending on your point of view).
It is an issue of security/privacy to not have the Reader keep a list of recently viewed files, or to at least allow the user to clear the list.
Thanks again for your time, interest, and speedy reply.
    Cheers!

  • 'Open Recent' files list

The 'Open Recent' files list is too short.
Is there a way to make it longer, e.g. for 25 or 50 files?
    Thanks!

I'm not sure that it's a good idea but it's your wish so here is the soluce:
    set nbRecents to 30
do shell script "defaults write com.apple.iWork.Pages NSRecentDocumentsLimit " & nbRecents
If you want the same behavior in Numbers, use:
    set nbRecents to 30
do shell script "defaults write com.apple.iWork.Numbers NSRecentDocumentsLimit " & nbRecents
In fact we may use that for every application with a Recent Items menu.
I got it in a thread dedicated to the behavior of Script Editor.

  • 'Open Recent File' doesn't work

Hi, I've just started a new job, and I'm on a PC with CS6. (I'm used to Mac, CS5)
I can't seem to get 'open recent file' to work in any of my CS6 programes It is always greyed out and never remembers what I've last done.
Does it have something to do with the files being stored on a passworded server?
    Thanks!
    -Kim

Ha! I would if I had an I.T department to start with!
I know absoutely nothing about PCs or Windows. We are a small business of 3 staff with no I.T department at all. The boss' husband put in the computers and he doesn't know anything about it or about CS. Boo.
Any pointers of how to fix it myself? Thanks

  • Delete files in Open Recent Files list - CS3

Is it possible to delete single files in the "Open Recent Files" list
or specify how many recently opened files are be shown?
    I am using CS3 (5.0.3).
    Thanks

No and no, although Adobe themself doesn't seem to have any problems with this -- every single update kills the list (to my chagrin).
Can't imagine any bona fide reason you'd want to. It's not like it's meant as sort of kind of Document organizing feature, as if.

  • Adobe Reader X freezes when I try to open recent files

When I try to open recent files, Adobe Reader X will freeze up and will stay that way until I restart the computer. Even logging off won't work. I recently left it alone for around 5-10 minutes and Windows finally did end up stopping the process, but this is not normal. Any ideas for a fix?

Nope. That didn't do it. It won't even let me end the process AcroRd32.exe. I confirmed that after around 10 minutes, it finally closed on it's own. I just also confirmed that it's a problem with accessing files on my network, not local files. The odd thing is that I can use the Open tool, go the folder and open that file fine, but when I try to open the same file under the recent files, it freezes up. This may have to do with the fact that this is a mapped network drive. Any fix would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Can I increase the "Open Recent Files" to more than 10?

I haven't been able to figure out how to get more than ten file options
    FILE> OPEN RECENT FILES
I tried Preferences and searching the library.

Settings like this one should be available in the programme preferences dialog.
Yes, you can do a lot by editing the somewhat hidden AIPrefs file, but isn't that pretty archaic … ?

  • Never showing my file and folder in desktop also..

never showing my file and folder in desktop and hardisk also....how to fix that....

See http://download.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/uiswing/components/list.html especially the part about the wrap modes and the list renderers.
For icons look at http://download.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/api/javax/swing/filechooser/FileSystemView.html#getSystemIcon(java.io.File) though I don't think it supports different sizes so you'll have to scale yourself.

Sadly Snow Leopard was the last OS X to have Front Row and it is no longer offered in Lion or Mountain.
see > Farewell Front Row | Macworld
If you want, you can get it back with some tweaking.
see > Get Front Row for Mac OS X 10.7 Lion
or > Use Front Row In OS X Lion
Also note: that your remote should still be working for waking the Mac, volume control and iTunes...? If it is not, let us know for help with it.

  • Microsoft Office for Mac open recent File menu option causing AFP to crash

    Hi all,
We have an Xserve running Mac OS X Server Leopard 10.5.8. The Xserve hosts three file shares for about 60 users. Our network is 99% Mac based running mostly 10.5.8 with a few 10.6.x. We have historically over the past several years had the AFP service become unreliable and crash frequently. Late last week the AFP service crashes constantly. The quick solution to getting it up and running is to delete the AFP.conf file in /etc.
We have troubleshot one cause of AFP crashing to the Open Recent... File menu option in Microsoft Office for Mac applications. That is, through some amount (haven't been able to narrow it down to how much) of opening documents on the share via the Open Recent menu the AFP service will crash.
Here's what's happening in the AppleFileServer .crash file:
    Process: AppleFileServer [26065]

Our solution is to have all our users turn off the open recent option in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Not an ideal solution but it may get the AFP service running "good enough."
Has anyone had an experience like this before or can anyone duplicate the AFP service crashing when trying to open documents on a share via the open recent menu? Any other ideas?
    Thanks

    Update.
I have been able to consistently reproduce a problem where the AFP service will crash if a file that a user has an alias to is moved to a folder and the user is denied access to .
    1. On your Mac create an alias to a file or folder, that you have access to, that is stored on a share served via AFP. The alias can be in the Places section of a Finder window, on the Desktop, or anywhere an alias can be created. Lets call what the alias points to the target.
    2. Move the target to a folder on the AFP share and deny the user or group Read & Write access to that folder.
    3. Try accessing the target via the alias created in step 1.
    The AFP service should crash.
Can anyone reproduce this crash scenario too?

  • Lost "Open Recent" files in Menu

    Hi,
I have lost the "open recent" tab in my Windows ID CS4 File Menu tab. Nor is it available to add in the Edit/Menu tab either. It was there when I installed ID... but it has disappeared....  This has happened in my Photoshop as well....
Any clue as to what rock it is hiding under?
    Thanks!
    Ken Dawes

It disappears when your prefs are reset (and maybe still when Daylight Savings Time begins and ends, but they may finally have fixed that in CS4). In any case, it should rebuild when you open new files. If it isn't, there's a good chance you turned off a registry value in Windows (are you using Windows?). One of the "paranoia" settings in TweakUI used to do that.

  • Remove "open recent file" screen on startup Acrobat X

When I start Adobe Acrobat X, it opens the splash screen "open a recent file". This is very annoying, because when you use Outlook, and choose to print a PDF document, it opens Acrobat X, it prints, but Acrobat X does not close from itself. I have to do it manually. So when I have to print several PDF documents from Outlook, I need to close every Acrobat X app, so the next document will print. Acrobat 9 did it automatically.
Is there a solution, or a registry tweak, to remove the "open a recent file" screen?
    Kind regards

Had a user call me today after installing an Adobe update:
"Whenever my boss prints from Outlook now, his PDF's go into some Adobe "recent" queue...."
Huh? I go to check it out. It's the same issue that people are complaining about here.
I asked his secretary: "Did you get an update?".
    "No"
She clicks on the Adobe X icon: Please wait while update is applied...
Up pops this "new and improved" recent screen.
Then I ask her to print a PDF attachment. Same issue as BravoBE.
I can see this confusing A LOT of people. My secretary didn't realize she could still click the menu bar when this "recent" screen was up.
Can you please give us an option to turn this off?
And can anyone supply me with a link to get back to Reader 9?
    //edit//
Found it for anyone else looking:

Of course I (the IT Manager) have Acrobat 8 Pro so I will hopefully not have this issue.

  • "open recent" file/song has gone

Since upgrading from LP 7.2.3 the function "open recent" has gone from the file menu:-(

  • Open Recent Files doesn't work

Most of the time I get the following message on files with .indd extension. I am in CS2. The message is Either the file does not exist, you do not have permission or the file is in use by another application. Well, I am the only user, I closed the file ten minutes ago and it is available if I go to the File/Open menu and then find it on my hard drive.

Try replacing your preferences. I'd use the long method of backing up the InDesign Defaults and InDesign SavedData files in your user profile, rather than the three key startup routine.
A new set of prefs will remove any customizations, and the recent files list, but it usually clears up this sort of problem. To make your life easier, go to the preset "define" dialogs and select any custom presets you've created, then save them to a file on the hard drive before doing the prefs replacement, then you can go back and select "load" to restore them.
If replacing the prefs solves your problem, make a backup copy of your new set (the two files mentioned above) after restoring any customizations and you will be able to copy the backup set back into your profile if you need this fix in the future. If replacement doesn't help, restore the old prefs you backed up.

  • Open Recent Files are not registering

The "Recent Files" option in either the button upon opening Pages, or option under "File" does not contain any files. I did trash certain plist files because the "Recent Files" was not updating. Any suggestions on how I can get this part of the Application to work? or do I need to reload the Application?
    Thank you.

    You're right.
As I rarely use 10.6.3, I missed that.
So, the list of preferences to trash when something is behaving wrong with an iWork app is now :
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Keynote. plist
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Keynote. LSSharedFileList.plist
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Numbers. plist
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Numbers. LSSharedFileList.plist
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Pages.pl ist
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Pages.LS SharedFileList.plist
I guess that the one stroring the 'recent documents' descriptors is more prone to corruption that the other one.
When you get an odd behaviour, it would be a good idea to trash the xx.LSSharedFileList.plist file first.
If it's sufficient, you will not loose the other prefs
