"open recents" or print gets spinning beach ball
Hello all -
Running 10.4.11 -- and now finding that system gets hung up on anything that has a drop down menu... like opening recents in Pages, or FCP or DVDStudio pro..... I can OPEN a file individually, but get stuck when I do this particular function. I know this system is "aging out", but I have to clunk along with FCP 4.5 for a while, and didn't want to upset the apple cart (ooops, no pun intended) by doing any major updates.
I have tried a program called AppleJack... that might fix operational issues.... but didn't seem to make a difference.
Any thoughts would be welcomed.
It may not be a related issue, but we get a never ending beach ball when opening files from Adobe Illustrator. If I browse and open a file, it works fine. If I plug part of the file name into he search box (located in the open dialogue box) a choose a file from the match results ...then it goes into a never-ending beach ball and if I force quit Illustrator it says "not responding" by the Adobe Illustrator icon (in the force quit dialogue box).

AI not opening files. Just get spinning beach ball.
Installed CS6 onto a MPB running 10.8.3. I did the install on friday, everything ran fine. We to work on this morning and when ever I try to open files I get the spinning beach ball. I restarted computer a couple times and tried a variety of files. Still not working.
What files? Where are they stored? What does their artwork contain? AI is quite particular about that stuff and isn't enamored with network drives or specific external drives just liek there's a million otehr potential causes like font problems, printer setups and what have you...

Every attempt to open Aperture results in a spinning beach ball. When attempting to force quit, every program freezes. I am running a MacBook Pro, OS X 10.9.3, 8 GB Ram. Have deleted and reinstalled the program from the App store with the same results. Purchased Aperture a few months ago and began without difficulties. However, recently, the program simply stopped working. Suggestions?
Try a few of these:
-Hold option while opening. This will ask you to create a new library/choose a different one. Create the new library, see if it opens
->If it opens, it's a library issue. Swap the library back to the original one.
->Try running Library First Aid (cmd + opt while opening)
->Make a backup first, run each of these until it opens.
-If it does not open, test in Safe Mode (shift while booting)
->If it works there, it's user login items or startup items that can be removed from /Library/LaunchAgents, /Library/LaunchDaemons, /Library/StartupItems and ~/Library/LaunchAgents.
->Show no mercy in these folders, but don't trash everything just yet. Move it to a safe location on the desktop where you can easily put these files back. Reboot, test.
->Put some files back from harmless/well-known developers. Reboot, test.
->Rinse and repeat until Aperture doesn't open.
-Test in a new user account
->If it opens here, it's part of your user preferences
->Log back in to your main user
->Open ~/Library/Preferences, pull com.Aperture.xxxxxx.plist
->Logout, log back in, test.
If it keeps up, contact Apple or try verifying/repairing the disk through Disk Utility. -
I have no idea why this is happening. I normally use Word, Excel, Google Chrome and sometimes Photoshop when using my computer and then one day it started getting super slow. This is my etrecheck.
Computer running slow all of the sudden. Getting spinning beach ball of death through all applications all the time. Computer losing charge while not plugged in.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. The beachball is literally every other minute. I tried to take the time to it's most basic second and it was 4:01:04 - I am currently backpacking in Laos with my bf and we are travel writers/photographers and he is helping me get this info.
We didn't know what anonymyze meant but we tried to make sure you couldn't see my name. So far the spinning beach ball has occurred 4 times in just writing these 4 lines.
We tried to make sure we didn't overwhelm you with the 4000 lines or more but just did a couple days worth of text. Thanks again for your time.

Constant Spinning beach ball of death!!! please help!!!
I have a macbook 2.1ghz with OSX 10.5.8 running with 4gb of 667mhz DDR2
Recently I have been getting spinning beach balls of death on a constant biases. They come when I try to open web pages such as google, youtube, espn.com... ANYTHING actually. They come when I try to open applications, they seem to come when I try to do almost anything. I cannot force quit when they come. I have tried waiting for them to go away, sometimes up to an hour and nothing happens. They have come when I try to open utilities to try to figure out what is wrong. They come in safe mode.
I have run disk permissions like someone suggested to you, and that has done nothing.
I made another account for the computer, and that still receives the same amount of beach balls.
I tried updating software. Nothing.
I reinstalled the OS, nothing.
I switched the ram out with the ram that came with the computer, and I still get the beach balls.
I ran Onyx, and it said the drives are fine.
Yesterday out of sheer desperation I reformatted the whole thing. (former PC user) At first it looked ok, but then I began to update software and it locked up. Also, now when I open web pages I get a beach ball that SOMETIMES goes away after 5 minutes. Usually it just spins and spins mocking my existence.
What else can I try? What else can I do? I live in a place that makes it VERY VERY difficult to take to a mac mechanic. (South Korea)
I don't want to have to buy a POS PC netbook. Please advise.My suggestion won't repair anything but it might be able to tell you if you have a hardware issue....(I am thinking that your hard drive may be about to give up....I have seen almost this exact set of symptoms here before)....try running the (AHT) Apple Hardware Test)...

....when you are booted from your install DVD pay attention to see if the SBBOD goes away no matter what the AHT says...problems found or not when running the tests....and run the extended set of tests.....
If the problem goes away while you are not booted from the internal hard drive....I would strongly suspect the hard drive....
You don't mention having run (Repair) disk from Disk Utility....not (Repair) permissions....

I keep having issues where I'll get spinning beach ball. Not sure how to diagnose. I've noticed it happened today with Chrome today, and display settings yesterday/today. It's starting to occur often.

Spinning beach ball and black screen on my new macbook pro
After great anticipation, I just updgraded to a new macbook pro from an ibook G4. For the most part, I am thrilled and applications open and web pages load quickly. Occassionally, though, I get spinning beach balls...with more frequency than I did with my ibook and in OS X native apps...such as Safari.
Another problem I am having is in Front Row playing movie trailers: the screen goes black before the end of the trailer, but the audio continues.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Depending on what machine you have, try turning the screen brightness all the way up. It will buttons on the top row, usually the F-1 for dimmer, F-2 for brighter
Also you can go to sytem preferences>display and un check the automatically adjust brightness for ambient light.

Spinning Beach ball while in Safari
I had an issue where I was trying to view a video from a website and received a message stating Adobe was working slow and do I want to quit. I said yes but then the beach ball appeared and no matter what I did (after allowing it to spin for a little while, thinking it would stop) I couldn't get out of the screen. I tried viewing other browser windows I had open, but still had the spinning beach ball. I couldn't open Finder or anything. On a PC, I could go to task manager and quit an application. How do I do that on a Mac? I tried CTL, ALT, Delete, or CTL, ALT, Command and whatever other combination I could think of. Finally I gave up and pressed the power button. I received the message asking if I wanted to Shut Down or Cancel. I said yes to shut it down but it didn't and the ball kept spinning. Finally I pressed the power button and held it until the computer shut down manually. I don't like doing that but I didn't know what else to do. Can someone tell me what I should do in a situation like this? I've had the spinning beach ball a couple times in the past week but for some reason today, it just wouldn't stop and I couldn't do anything on the computer.

Spinning beach ball woes on 27 inch iMac
We have a mid 2010 27 inch iMac (and also a late 2010 13 inch MacBook Air, from which I am writing this post). About 6 months ago it was starting to get spinning beach balls, which I attributed to not having updated the OS (then 10.7). Having upgraded the Air to Mavericks with success, I also upgraded the iMac to Mavericks, and the beach balls got much, much worse, rendering the thing nearly unusable. I cannot for the life of me figure out what the issue is, particularly because the Air, which is about the same vintage, is working great under the same setup. Can someone who has not been staring at this problem for 6 months help?
Here's what I've got:
As I mentioned, mid 2010 27-inch iMac, 1TB hard drive, about half-full, backing up to a 2 TB Time Capsule.
We have two wifi networks to cover the whole house; one is integrated with the cable company's provided router and sits in the basement, and the other is the Time Capsule hooked up to the cable company's VoIP router upstairs. Because you cannot use the Time Capsule to extend an existing network if it is not an Apple network, I resorted to setting each wifi network up independently (separately connected to ethernet). My Air navigates this just fine, as do our iPads/iPhones, and I don't notice a speed difference between the two networks (assuming I have equally good reception wherever I am).
Notably, the Time Capsule seems to randomly stop broadcasting wifi every now and then (at intervals of a few days to a couple weeks), which requires a restart to get it working again. (This could be totally unrelated.)
The iMac was at 10.7 when the beach balls started; upgrading to Mavericks made the slowness/beachballs worse. As I noted, Mavericks did not cause any trouble with the Air.
The beach balls seem to coincide with a complete stall in everything the computer is doing. After the stall ends, the computer can be fairly speedy, so it's as if it pauses for several seconds to a minute or so to think very hard, and then goes back to its business.
There is usually a slight improvement if I shut down and boot up again, but it gums up pretty quickly.
Here's what I've done:
Started with 4GB RAM; added another 8 (total 12) after this all started. Equally bad before and after.
Stared at Activity Monitor and Console for long periods of time while watching for beach balls to try to detect a pattern.
In Activity Monitor, memory pressure is fine (esp. now that I added 8 GB), no swap used. The two worst offenders under CPU usage seem to be kernel_task or WindowServer, but they are not always monopolizing the CPU at the times when it is stalled.
In Console, the main two patterns seemed to be a frequent WindowServer "updates forcibly disabled" error, and what seemed like a constant browsing for wifi connections even though the computer was already connected to wifi. However, I couldn't figure out what either of these meant or what might be done to fix them.
Used disk utility, repaired permissions, verified disk, etc. - everything was ok, although some permissions were repaired.
Used third-party utilities, Onyx and iDefrag, to try to verify disk and clean things up. No significant problems detected, and no improvement.
Various other methods of cleaning up -- eliminating old software or files that aren't being used, emptying trash, taking extra files off the desktop, etc. In particular, having read that Mail might have issues handling Google accounts, I eliminated a heavily-used Google account from Mail and got a separate, lighter-weight third-party app to handle that account. That did seem improve things at first, but we seem to be back to slowness and beach balls again.
Final, last-ditch effort: backed up and then erased hard drive and (after another Disk Utility verify - still fine) did a clean install of Mavericks.
It took several attempts to download the installer using the Time Capsule network (kept stalling); switched to the other (non-Apple) wifi network and it downloaded and installed fine.
However, after the clean install, although it was not nearly as slow as before, amazingly, I still had spinning beach balls and hanging without having installed anything other than the OS.
I made several attempts to get into the backup to selectively reinstall files. Could not mount backup using Time Capsule -- option-clicking and selecting "Browse Other Backups" did not actually get me to the other backup. Using Migration Assistant, could not get the backup to load, or the loading was taking an inordinately long period of time, so I gave up. (Also, every time I tried to quit Migration Assistant to try to discover the problem with the backup loading, it hung and I had to hard-restart.)
So, since the clean install did not seem to fix the problem, and I was starting to worry about not being able to get to my backup, I have gone back to just restoring from the Time Capsule. It's telling me this will take over 200 hours.
The one thing I haven't tried is shutting down the computer, lugging it upstairs, and connecting it to Time Capsule via ethernet, at least for the restoration. I will do this if I leave the computer overnight and it's still not done in the morning.
I've done much searching of these discussion boards, and tried everything that seemed like a possible culprit. What am I missing? Spinning beach ball on yosemite
iMac gets spinning beach ball every so often. I must wait for about 5 minutes to get back control. HD only half full. Plenty of RAM. Activity monitor doesn't show high usage of CPU or RAM when beach ball spins. Please help.

Keynote 4 - selecting text in text frame causes spinning beach ball
One friend of mine called me tonight and was seeking for help. He has Mac OS X 10.5.1 and Keynote 4.0.1. He imported picture in Keynote, added text frame on top of it and typed in some text. Then he went to another slide, but then returned back to resize text in the text frame. As soon he selects text, he gets spinning beach ball of death...
I asked him to repair permissions and restart his MacBook Pro 17", but still he has the same problem. He tried the same with different font in the text frame - the same. As soon as he tries to select text in the text frame, he gets spinning beach ball again.
Any ideas how to help him?...OK, Carolyn, I wrote down all my prefs (glad I did), trashed the prefs file, restarted, relaunched TextEdit, reset all my preferences to my liking (which had reverted to default settings), quit TextEdit. Then I tried double-clicking some text files -- and the same problem (#2 above) persists. None of my TextEdit or text files have TextEdit as the default launch application -- they're still all either "None" or "ams1108.html". And, as before, if I try to change it to "TextEdit" in the file's info box, then click on "change all," it does not work: not only does it not change all the text files to be TextEdit, but clicking "change all" will cause the file in question to revert to "None" or "ams1108.html". However, if I only change the default app for that one file to TextEdit, and don't click "change all," then it will stick -- for now at least. (Though I wouldn't be surprised if after a restart they all changed back to "None.")
The short assessment is: trashing the prefs did NOT fix problem #2 above. It may or may not have fixed problem #1 -- hard to tell immediately, since the only way to find out is the use TextEdit for two days.
So, setting aside problem #1 for now: any suggestions for fixing problem #2 (default app can't be changed to TextEdit by clicking "change all")? I have thousands and thousands of TextEdit files I use, so changing them all manually one-by-one isn't feasible. Thanks. -
Spinning Beach Ball/ Indexing Won't Complete
I turned on my Mac one morning, and as I opened programs, webpages ect. the spinning beach ball would appear, and my Mac would be momentarily frozen. This happened out of no where. I then noticed that the Spotlight indexing had not completed, and would remain at the same completion rate. Would this have anything to do with my Mac constantly freezing up(spinning beach ball), and if so, what can I do to fix it?

Help for slow clients with spinning beach balls.
I work at a school where we have an xsvr 105-000 running 10.5
We have about 100 eMacs running 10.4 that connect to it. They are clients running their desktops off of the server. Each student has their own account.
We are having a continuing problem that no one seems to be able to solve. The computers slow to a crawl everyday. Students get spinning beach balls when they are clicking on sites, paging or scrolling up and down etc.
If someone plugs in with a laptop that does not log into the server and surfs the web there are no problems. No delays.
Here are my questions:
1. Are there a maximum number of connections that an xserv server can handle. If we have 60 students logged in are we choking at at the server level?
2. Is there some setting on the server that could be causing this? (I realize that I have provided no where near enough info for a specific here, but I am only a teacher.)
3. Any other ideas?

In my experience/opinion once you get to around 60-100 users - depending hugely on usage etc - you really should be adding another server to help balance the load. Enabling lots of Services on one box and then connecting lots of clients is a 'classic' mistake to make. It does not end there. Ideally you should be providing gigabit to desktop. Ideally managed switches. You also have to look at what the rest of the network is doing. Important if your situation involves an educational environment. It might be advisable to put mac clients and server(s) on their own switch possibly?
Ideally Server and Client should be the same version although if approached correctly there should not be any problems if the Server is one version ahead of the clients.
Mileage as ever will vary.

Recurring spinning beach balls

Normally, when I write about my 1.25 dual MDD, I don't post anything in terms of performance issues. But this time I seem to have some issues and though to some it might not be a big deal.
Problem: When on youtube, I sometimes get the spinning beach ball and no activity at all, though after awhile it will allow me to force quit camino and start over. Can someone explain to me why on earth am I getting spinning beach balls on this mac?
The memory is 2GB - fully maxed! No problems with ram since I ran applejack's memtest utility. Hard drives are over 50GB and 120 GB though my reflected usage is very low. I have over 54GB left on the MacHD1(2ndary master), and on MacHD0(my primary master), I have over 95GB left.
I run every nite before bed cocktail 3.8.3(tiger version) and still the next day when I get home from work and go onto youtube, it still gives me spinning beach balls. I can understand on a sawtooth or other mac this happening, but my mac? Why is this happening?
Is Youtube not comfortable on my mac or something?

I accidentally quit my CC on my Macbook pro and now the cloud icon is grayed out and every time I hover over it with the mouse I get the spinning beach ball of death on the icon. I have no idea how to open it because when I use spotlight search to open it it gives me a message saying "Creative Cloud is not open anymore" help!
Since you didn't include any pertinent info such as the Mac model and OS version you are running, here is some general information:

Depending on which OS yours came with originally - and which OS you are now running - you would either need your original install disks - you can call Apple for replacements by giving them your serial number. Or you may be able to reinstall the OS by using recovery (again, depends on which model/which OS).
