Open relay test

I had just recently changed from a commercial mail server to using postfix/cyrus as supplied with 10.4.4 server. Set up went well though did get bit by having some mail come in before any users had login, there by causing some accounts to use the default mail store, when I wanted them using specific mail stores associated with their virtual domains.
Anyway got that all sorted out, with the help of messages other had posted here about similar problems.
I've also ran the mail server though a few open relay checks with no problems found, and have been going through the smtp mail logs every day for the last week and it looks like everything is buttoned down tight. But in doing so, it brings me to my question.
As far as I can tell, all of the open relay tests available are from 1999 - 2003. Seems these are going to be outdated and that those wanting to co-opt mail servers to use for spamming have probably found new methods.
So, any good relay test suggestions from anyone?
Tom N.

  • Open relay test results

    Hi all. I'm a new Ironport user, having just started working for a company that had a Spam and Virus Blocker already up and running.
    We've been put on some blacklists for acting as an open relay. Apparently my predecessor had already done much of the work involved in fixing this problem, but we're still on blacklists. I'm not sure when the last time we really were an open relay was; it could have been before the Ironport was ever installed. I want to clear our name, but before I start requesting removals, I want to be 100% sure that the problem is addressed.
    I've run some online open relay tests, and most report that we are not an open relay, but when I tried http://www.rbl.jp/svcheck.php , 5 of their 19 tests came back as "accepted".
    I searched the Ironport knowledge base and found that our settings already match the recommendation -- our RAT is set to reject "all other recipients".
    Here are the recipients from the tests that came back as "accepted":
    >>> RCPT TO: <rlytest%[email protected]>
    >>> RCPT TO: <"[email protected]"@server01.mycompany.com>
    >>> RCPT TO: <h.rbl.jp![email protected]>
    >>> RCPT TO: <"rlytest%h.rbl.jp"@mycompany.com>
    >>> RCPT TO: <"[email protected]"@mycompany.com>
    "server01" is the name of our Exchange server. Our firewall is set to forward port 25 to the Ironport.
    Some of the tests suggested that even an "accepted" message was not a sure sign of being an open relay, and that the mail server might accept it and then silently discard it anyway. Is this something I need to fix, or is it already handled by the Ironport? How can I tell for sure? I've considered telnet'ing in from my home PC and reproducing the commands shown on that site using a real email address of my own, but I'm not really confident in this procedure, or in the procedure of "properly" malforming email addresses. Any advice?
    Can anyone recommend further steps for me to take to be sure we are not operating an open relay?

    Thank you for the quick reply, Steven.
    It seems as though my Ironport does not have the "findevent" command. When I tried it I got an "unknown command: findevent" message, and the "help" message does not list findevent. Are you sure that command exists in the Spam and Virus Blocker, and not just other Ironport models?
    I notice that there are two upgrades available to download for my Ironport, so maybe it's just that my current version is too old. I'm not sure I'm daring enough to install the upgrades during business hours, so I'll probably do that on the weekend.
    Thanks again.

  • Open relay connector

    Trying to replace an open relay for servers/applications on exchange 2013 so I can retire exchange 2007, but I get the unable to relay error.  I’ve created the new frontend connector on CAS server with its own IP/DNS entries, scoped it and put security
    identical to the working connector on 2007. Also, I ran the obligatory:
    Get-ReceiveConnector "exchange1\relay2" | Add-ADPermission -User "NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON" -ExtendedRights "Ms-Exch-SMTP-Accept-Any-Recipient"
    Used ADSIedit to verify it has the exact same permissions as the working relay connector in old exchange.
    Exchange 2013 I think, is not using the connector. When I telnet to relay.domain.com (exchange 2007), I get 250 relay.domain.com Hello [ip] as expected. When I telnet to relay2.domain.com (exchange 2013), I get 250 exchange1.domain.com Hello [ip] whereas
    I would expect to get 250 relay2.domain.com. If I attempt to send, I get unable to relay and logs show connection attempts using Exchange1\Default Front end connector.
    What did I miss?

    After some more testing, I think I may know what's going on, but not why.  I removed all the IPs from the remote range and added just one IP address and restarted the transport service. I can still open a telent session from a server that is not in
    the list.
    From the How Does Exchange 2013 Know which recieve connector to use? section of http://exchangeserverpro.com/exchange-2013-configure-smtp-relay-connector/, he states the following:
    Simply put, receive connector selection is on a “most specific match wins” basis. The connector with remote network settings that most closely match the IP of the connecting server/device will
    be the one that handles the connection.
    This is not happening in my case. Even though my custom relay connector is a closer match, connections are going to the default frontend connector.

  • SQL Developer crashing when opening or testing a connection

    SQL Developer closes abruptly when opening or testing a connection.
    Here's what I do.
    Open SQL Developer.
    Create a connection:

    Username: [username]
    Password: [password]
    Save password: checked
    Oracle tab:
    Connection type: TNS
    Connect Identifier: somedatabasename
    Then I click on "Test" and the application immediately quits. No error messages. The app does the same thing if I save the connection and try to expand its node on the list of connections.
    Mind you, if I use sqlplus like so:
    [username]/[password]@somedatabasename
    It connects just fine.

  • Relay Testing with State Machine

    Hi,
    Yesterday I very kindly had some help from "crossrulz" in setting out the following procedure.  Today, the National Instruments representative called and said I should implement my programme as a "State Machine", which I have attempted in the programme attached.  I was wondering how I might now implement the procedures 3 to 5 in this State Machine format as it seemed very complecated in the brief time we had.
    What I am trying to do is test relays, using an automated test procedure.
    The procedure takes the following steps:
    1.       A NI9472  DO card and transistor drive turns the relay on/off via energising the coil (needs the time period to be variable).
    2.       Counts how may cycles the relay contacts have operated, this will easily be in excess of 100,000 cycles.
    3.       Every 100 cycles (again variable), the contacts are held closed, the load circuit (the current the relay is switching, which will be 15A at 30V) is disconnected, via another relay and a measurement is taken via a separate four wire method.  This consists of a 6V supply being placed across the contacts (switched in again via a relay) with a 1A current flowing through the contacts, the voltage drop across the contacts is then inputted into the NI AI NI9219 card (this is in the region of 10’s of mA) and is directly proportional to the contact resistance, which is what I want to measure.
    4.       The measurement is taken and stored and the measurement circuit disengaged, the load circuit re-engaged, and another 100 cycles is counted before the process goes back to stage 3.
    5.       This process goes on until the relay fails and hopefully a large set of contact resistance data is gathered.
    I have no real experience with NI Labview.
    I have looked at the basic academic tutorials and have come up with the following programme for stage 1, however I can't get the DAQ Assistant to output every cycle
    Would this be a very difficult programme to implement for the novice?  The academic tutorials seem straight forward but when I try to do someting it seems very difficult.
    Hoping someone may be able to help, thanks

    Hi James,
    I've tried to implement some logic as suggested.  I can now get the 1A coil to engauge after the nth cycle and I think it's taking a measurement, but can't seem to get the 15 A coil to disengauge at the same moment, which is crucial else the measurement will be across 16 A rather than just the 1 A.  Any ideas?  I just want to get it working so we can get started with testing.
    I'm going to get my supervisor to book me on a course at Newbury for future projects, it's very difficult to pick up of your own back.
    Kind regards,
    Andy

  • I Think It's Time That Verizon Opens Up Testing Of Updates & Firmware To The Windows Phone Community!!!

    Waiting for Verizon to release updates on a reasonable time table has become a complete failure.  If you only have a couple technicians in house testing the 4-5 devices you only carry and it takes this long, there's a problem with your technicians.
    If you don't want to allocate the time, money and resources to a platform that your sales reps never push or even mention in stores, or on your website or over the phone, I think it's time to either drop the line completely or turn to the Windows Phone Community to do your job for you.
    I think it's time that Verizon takes a queue from Microsoft and opens up testing of updates and firmware to any and all Windows Phone Users that want to help the cause and better support the platform in the process.  You can have your legal department draft up a clause that releases Verizon of any liability if a user opts to test updates or firmware.
    What else better than to have the Community help in the cause (in masses) over the limited few technicians you have in house testing out the updates and firmware.  You will get all the feedback you will need to make a proper decision as to push the updates or firmware or go back to Microsoft and make fixes to any/all bugs that are found.
    In a technological age we live in, to not take advantage of a community of users who would be more than willing to test out products, goods, services, you are just shooting yourself in the foot.
    If you look at the numbers of how many users signed up to be part of Microsoft's Developer Preview app, you will see that there are millions of users willing to take the risk in order to help the cause while being a part of the testing process, making the platform better in the long run.
    It's time for change, it's time to embrace the community, it's time to respond at let the community know one way or another if we are going to get updates and firmware in a timely manner... and not just one update or firmware in a year cycle.
    Windows (9) is going to be released to the general public as Technical Preview on September 30, and you can guarantee that millions of users are going to download the OS and test it out and submit feedback via the OS and Microsoft's Community Forum in order to make it a success...  So why don't you Verizon do the same and open up beta testing of updates and firmware to the Windows Phone Community here!!!
    Think about it, take a poll... but do something, one way or another... It's time to stop keeping us paying customers in the dark regarding updates and firmware that improves the experience, enhances our devices and provides the security that we need for our phones.  If you take good care of us, we will continue to be customers, renew our contracts or even sign up for Verizon Edge Accounts.
    But if you keep us in the dark, you can guarantee that you will get customers leaving when there contracts are up because Windows Phone Users are loyal to Windows Phone... PERIOD!!!
    Waiting for Tidbits and Elector to grace my post with there constant negativity and start a war of words as usual... since they love stirring the pot and angering the Windows Phone Community every time they reply to posts.  I just can't believe they spend that much time here on the forums replying if they are not a paid Verizon employee or a paid basher from a competing platform.

    Well I found nothing wrong in your post. So why even make a statement like the quote I included?
    Once more I am a retired government employee. So I have the time to post. Or has my rights been taken away to voice an opinion?
    Your posts was great you were not whining about your rights to file complaints to the FCC or FTC etc. One of the best I have read.
    And I am not trying to sway you from your phone choice. If you looked at my avitar it shows apple iphones. But I use and have used androids and not Windows phones.
    However your numbers of windows phone users all leaving over the issue is miniscule in the number of users of Android and iOS devices.
    I have written many times I wish all the devices get updated like iOS devices do. But at present that is not happening
    No bashing, no adversarial post just a little common sense is all I use.
    And again your post was great.
    Good Luck

    After update to Firefox 15 it crashes after javascript call from a popup window.close();opener.alert('test');. Is this working as intended or is it a bug?

    According to the pages linked to the crash ID, there is a bug report on this.
    Does the crash occur as soon as you run those two lines of code, or after dismissing the alert()?
    If this is your application, why are you running script commands after calling window.close()? Could you avoid the problem by using an approach like this:
    <br>window.setTimeout(function(){opener.alert('test'},250);
    window.close();

  • Has to type each character twice while supplying command in Open VISA test panel

    has a set of commands to work witha system connected to the MS windows PC. when I trype the commands in Hyperterminal (with/without ) they are yielding the expected results.
    in LabVIEW, to get the expected results I MUST has to type 'each character' in the command Twice(except blank space) in the Open VISA test panel (viWrite/viRead). If I give the command  is given the usual way(with each character typed only once), the result always is 'illegal command'.....the same works fine in the Hyperterminal.

    What confused Ashwin is that you said "In LabVIEW". OK, so you're using the MAX test panel. There's one thing that's not clear. You said "when I trype the commands in Hyperterminal (with/without )". With/without what? How is your Hyperterminal session configured? Have you tried something like PortMon to see what's actually being sent from the serial port driver?

  • Labview 8.2 close or crashes when opening up Test Exec. from labview 5.1

    Why  would Labview 8.2 close or crashes when opening up Test Exec. from 5.1? Labview 8.2 begins to load the Test Executive VI, then, stops and closes labview altogether.  I remember getting it to load before but do not know what could be causing this?  I am tasked with updating the old code from Labview 5.1 to Labview 8.2.1; actually Labview 8.5, since it is the latest.
    Thanks, Mike

    Dennis,
    Thanks for the response.  The odd thing is that I am able to open some of the subvi's.  And I've opened the test executive before.   Now, during the initial loading of the Test Executive, there are some drivers that are not executable by Labview 8.2.1 (i.e.  ni-daq cards.... for MIO and DIO boards).  Could that be it?  I would expect the program to load but not run.  I have gotten the program to load before, so I am confused by it not loading now.  Thanks for the tip on Labview 8.5 as I was ultimately going to that version, too!
    My ideal situation would be to load all drivers ( including Traditional Ni-daq and Ni-VXI 3.3.1, etc) and run this program using Labview 8.5 or 8.2.1 on an XP platform.  This original program was created in Labview 5.1 and Windows NT.  Any help and suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks for your help,
    Michael

  • Internal Open Relay For Entire Network

    Hello All,
    Sorry if this has been answered, but I haven't seen anything that addresses specifically what I need in the forums.
    I have a single Exchange 2010 Server. I've set up a new receive connector called Open Relay and have opened up various I.P. Addresses. What I would like to do is open it up for all of my subnets internally (10.0.0.1/24.) Which is easy enough.
    Here's the problem, I only want the Open Relay to work internally, I do not want any of my workstations to be able to relay off the trusted subnets, across those internal subnets YES, but to the outside world, NO. Everything I try gives them rights to relay
    both inside and outside, that is a blacklisting just waiting to happen.
    This is so that all the scripts that I run remotely on workstations can send me emails with info that I need.
    Thanks Eric
