Open & Save on many applications dialouges acting very strange lately!

This is a weird situation to explain because it is so odd to me, and I've never seen anything like it.
On applications like Mail, Photoshop, Text Edit, and other programs (both Apple and non-Apple) have been giving me very odd behaviors when saving and opening files while scrolling through directories to find the correct directory to save in/open from.
It's difficult to explain this behavior without a video tutorial but I will give it a shot. I will walk you through it. I am in Photoshop now. I have a file open and I want to save it for web. I hit AppleShiftS and the menu pops up. I hit Save. The dialougue comes up. I am currently in the viewing in detailed view (the button on the left where you choose which way to view your dialogue, the one with the horizontal lines going across). Now first of all, none of the dialogues on my computer lately ever "remember" where I saved last. You know how when you save into a certain directory often, when you save again, it should remember so you don't have to click on eighteen folders to get back to where you were? Well, this doesn't happen anymore for me. ANYWAY, so I click on my external drive. On the right, the contents of the root directory of my external pop-up. Here is where it gets weird. I double-click on BLACK SEA (a folder for my design company, that is called Black Sea) to open it. Instead of taking me to that directory, it basically displays every folder inside BLACK SEA underneath it. Now, keep in mind, there are no arrows next to the folders. It isn't collapsing/expanding the folder like it does when arrows or plus signs are next to folders. It just displays the contents underneath, with no indentation. So, I keep clicking on folders to get to the specific folder I want to save in (this means double-clicking about 5 more times, to get to the desired folder). As I am doing this, that thing I explained is happening, and sometimes, when I double-click, it doesn't open the folder. It just freezes and doesn't respond. Either that, or it will open it, but display the contents of the folder it belongs in, instead of the contents of the folder I'm clicking on.
Okay, you're probably really confused now, aren't you? I don't blame you.. it's hard to explain what is happening. Basically, to sum it up, my open/save dialogues are acting fishy and not acting the way they should. I'm pretty computer literate, I am a pro graphic designer and web designer so I know what I am doing. I have tried restarting and repairing permissions. I think I may have to run first aid? What do you all think? Ever had similar experiences?
And before you blame it on photoshop... remember, it does this in mail when choosing attachments, or in Text Edit when saving or opening files, and other programs like Cyberduck (FTP) and my HP Scanner Utility when saving what I scanned.
A few key things to remember that the Finder application does NOT do this (and for that I am THANKFUL because since I can't for the life of me save a file where I want it saved, I end up saving it as close to where I can get it, then go into Finder and drag it to it's proper folder since I can't accurately save in these programs I'm having trouble with).
Also, in the other viewing option (the button next to the one with the horizontal lines in the saving/opening dialogue), this works properly. This is the method I have to use in order to save, because it behaves as it should (expanding/collapsing folders in the window to the right of the folder I am clicking on). But personally, I hate this view, and would rather use the other one.
Please let me know if you have any other questions. I am sure you do because I wrote a novel and I know it is confusing but I did my best.

My goodness, you certainly gave a detailed description!!!!!!!!!
Have you tried using your system restore disk to check for errors on the internal drive using Disk Utility. (Not the Disk Utility in your Applications folder). If not, shut down your Mac. All at the same time, press the Power Button, hold down the C key and insert your system restore disk, probably number 1. Keep holding down the C key until you see the Apple logo on the screen, then let go.
At this point, go to the Menu and click Utilities/Disk Utility. When DU opens, select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, make sure First Aid is selected then click Verify. If DU reports errors, click Repair. After that's finished, Quit Disk Utility from the Menu, then click Utilities in the Menu again and then click Startup Manager. When that window opens, select MacintoshHD and click Restart. That will boot you back up from your internal drive. See if you see a difference.
If that doesn't help, I see you are running 10.4.8. You are two updates behind. Run Software Update from the Apple Menu. After you run the update, run Disk Utility (from your Applications/Utility folder) and Repair Disk Permissions. (Always do that after a software update) Reboot and see if that helped.

  • Computer is acting very strange. Please help.

My computer has starter acting very strange. It has start to take ages to boot up, and it runs a progress bar on the grey apple screen (as if its was booting in safe mode, but its not). I cant seem to save any files with any Apps. When I try to save documents in office it tells me ether the file name or path doesn't exist, it is open by another program, or its read only. Office also keeps coming up with errors saying im out of memory. Other apps just come up with errors when I try and save files.
The last thing I did before my computer started acting up, was to increase the size of a Windows partition. Using Winclone I copied my Windows OS, then added the partition back to my mac, and re-partitioned it to a larger size. I formatted it into NTFS using Tuxera, and then used Winclone to put Windows back on. Everything seemed to go smoothly, and the Windows OS is fine.
    Please Help!

    Yes, iRadu is correct.
If Disk Utility can't fix it, you'll need a more robust utility for the repair. I would recommend DiskWarrior. It is the best at directory repairs. It rebuilds then actually replaces your old directory. I feel every Mac owner should have a copy.
Make sure you get the disk so you can boot up on it to run repairs. You can also install it on another drive and run it from there to repair this one. DW works faster that way.
I use DW once a month to try and catch errors in my system from getting too far out of hand.
DW is the only utility I would recommend to repair +Keys out of order+. It's a pretty serious error.
Do you have a good backup...one with no issues?

    p.s. Here's a rewiew of DiskWarrior 4.

  • IPad acting very strange and gets hot.

My iPad mini is acting very strange, Siri starts as normal, but repeats "Siri not available" about 25 times before working. The iPad is slow and gets very hot when on. When you type it takes a minute for the iPad to catch up even if you type slow. What could be wrong?

    Try this:
    1. Close all apps in the Task Bar. Double-click the Home button and hold apps down for a second or two. Tap the minus sign to close app.
    2. Hold the Sleep/Wake and Home button down until you see the Apple Logo.

  • Mavericks Open/Save Dialog crashes application

I'm having htis issue since upgrading to Mavericks and even after updating to 10.9.1.
I have tried all solutions/workarounds that were provided here, such as coverflow option, rebooting is safe mode, Verify Disk etc.
When I am using an application such as Adobe Photoshop Google Chrome or Mail. When I need to use the Open or Save Dialog it hangs the application 9/10 times. I need to Force close it and then I have lost my progress is e.g. Photoshop. I can create an PSD first (copy one) and then open it and edit it to my needs and than Quick Save it. But when I need to save it for Web I need the ave Dialog.
Same goes when I nee to upload a file in Chrome of Opera, when the open dialog comes, the application hangs and I am unable to complete it.
Is there a fix for this, do more people have this problem? I really need a fix as it is really difficult for me currently to work properly.
    Regards,
    Léon

If you're having problems with freezing in the FILE -> OPEN dialog run this command fron the terminal.
    sudo update_dyld_shared_cache -force
I think the utility "Onyx" has an option to automatically clean out that cache without having to go to a terminal.

  • Do I have a virus? My Mac is acting very strangely

There are lots of strange things happening with my mac.
When I first got this mac, everything was fine. Then I had a run-in with someone who I suspect tried to or did in fact hack in to spy. There was one instance when it seemed to me like someone was using remote access to move around windows and open files right in front of me.
Anyway, long story short, this person is no longer a concern and I have since tightened security, enalbled my firewalls and installed a VPN.
But...here are just some of the problems I have noticed.
When I power up, sometimes the log in window appears with only the text box visible, the rest of the screen is black. At times, when I move the mouse over the screen, it leaves a trail behind that 'erases' the black screen to reveal the log in screen behind. Sometimes part of the screen is black and some of it is not.
Sometimes, when I power down, my mac turns itself back on again, even though the lid is shut. It sits there on sleep until further notice.
When I walk away, leaving my mac to turn on the screen saver and then go to sleep, sometimes when I wake it up again, all of my applications have quit. I have to open eberything again and sign back in, very annoying! In these situations, my wi-fi has quite often also been turned off. When I turn it back on, it asks for my network password again, but then does not recognise it when it is entered. I have to restart before I can connect again.
I've ran disk uitility checks and everything appears fine, I've also installed Trend Micro Titanium virus protection - it's scanned all my files and has detected nothing suspicious.
Sometimes I have wondered about the functionality of my VPN? Maybe it is the problem? I often turn it off because it slows down my page loading.
If anyone has any help or advice, I'd be ever so grateful...!

If you know or suspect that a hostile intruder has either had physical access to your computer, or has been able to log in remotely, then there are some steps you should take to make sure that the computer is safe to use.
First, if there's any chance that the incident will be the subject of legal action, then you should do nothing at all without consulting a lawyer or the police. Your computer would be the principal evidence in such a case, and you don't want to tamper with it.
Running any kind of software to scan for "viruses" or "rootkits" is worse than useless. If I broke into your system and wanted to leave a back door, I could do it in a way that would be undetectable by those means — and I don't pretend to any special skill as a hacker. You have to assume that any intruder could do whatever I could do. The "anti-virus" software itself will slow down and destabilize the computer with no offsetting benefit.
The only way you can be sure that the computer is not compromised is to erase at least the startup volume and restore it to something like the status quo ante. The easiest approach is to recover your entire system from a backup that predates the attack. Obviously, that's only practical if you know when the attack took place, and it was recent, and you have such a backup. You will lose all changes to your data, such as email, that were made after the time of the snapshot. Some of those changes can be restored from a later backup.
If you don't know when the attack happened, or if it was too long ago for a complete rollback to be feasible, then you should erase and install OS X. If you don't already have at least two complete, independent backups of your data, then you must make them first. One backup is not enough to be safe.
When you reboot after the installation, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process for a new computer. That’s when you transfer the data from one of your backups in Setup Assistant.
Select only users in the Setup Assistant dialog — not Applications, Other files and folders, or Computer & Network Settings. Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled.
Reinstall your third-party software from original media or fresh downloads — not from a backup, which may be contaminated.
Unless you were the target of an improbably sophisticated attack, this procedure will leave you with a clean system. If you have reason to think that you were the target of a sophisticated attack, then you need expert help.
That being done, change all Internet passwords and check all financial accounts for unauthorized transactions. Do this after your system has been secured, not before.

  • IPad acting very strange (HELP!)

    Hi guys,
something very strange is happening to my iPad 2 and I'm hoping someone could help me out.
So my iPad was working fine few hours ago, and had approximately 50-60% battery left. So I put it to sleep by clicking on the power button on top right, and did my business. After few hours, I tried to turn on the screen as usual by clicking the power button but it won't turn on. So I tried long-clicking because I figured somehow it turned off, but it didn't register. I tried clicking the home button but nothing.
So I plugged in the charger (despite knowing there was battery left) and the iPad turned on as if it was completely turned off (and asking my passcode and stuff). When I put the passcode, it opens but the battery says 100%. When I unplug the charger, it goes dead again.
Even more weirdly, when I keep charger plugged, it stays awake for a minute then completely goes dead again. Then after few seconds, the apple logo comes up (as if rebooting) and turns on again. The cycle continues.
I did not drop it or anything, it was just sitting there, and it worked perfectly fine up until now. I'm very confused why it's acting this way.
Is this hardware malfunction, plain and simple? Should I take it to the apple store and have them fix it or replace it?

    update:
not sure if this is relevant but I turned on my ipad's icloud so i can move my camera roll to photostream (of course ipad still won't work without being plugged).
Soon after, i got a message on ipad screen saying:
    "verification failed.
the certificate for this server is invalid. you might be connecting to a server that is pretending to be setup.icloud.com which could put your confidential info at risk"
Is it possible that my iPad was somehow hacked?

  • Caps lock button acting very strange.

I recently got a Lenovo T420 thinkpad. Everything has been great until earlier today I tried to log-in to buzzport ( a GT website) and when I hit the caps lock button all these weird things happened. Google Chrome went into full screen, and the "elements" thing came up. Im not sure exactly what it is, but it looks like some sort of HTML code for the website. oh and if it also enters the text "09" when caps lock is pressed. well anyways, now this happens everytime I press caps lock. I opened notepad and pressed caps lock. The result was "09" followed by an endless stream of 1's which continued until I pressed caps lock again. This is very strange and I couldn't find any information about this on google. I don't know what could have caused this, but its very frustrating because this is a brand new laptop. Any help is appreciated. Thank you!
edit: so i've been playing with it, and im convinced that basically instead of just doing what caps lock does, it is pressing a series of other buttons as well including the 09, the 1's, and opening what i now know is called the elements pannel which normally opens with ctrl + shift + C. so in other words, for some reason pressing caps lock preses the buttons "09 ctrl + shift + C 11111111111111111111111111111111111111111"
edit 2: ok it just got weirder. I fixed the problem...sort of. I started thinking about everything i have done differently today. I mean ive only had the lap top for a few days after all. tonight is the first night i used the mute button. i unmuted the laptop, and now everything is fine. if i mute, then caps lock acts weird again. I could just always go to zero volume rather than mute, but just as a curiosity, why is this happening? it makes no sense!

I noticed that some problems don't seem to get attention. I am typing this using a bluetooth keyboard on top of my G4 PowerBook, which is hardly an elegant solution to my caps lock problem. If I spend close to $2000 on a laptop, which is close to the most I spend on any consumer product after a house and car, is it unreasonable to expect that after a mere four years, it can be repaired, rather than simply tossed aside. I am an expat living in a SE Asian country without any Apple Authorised resellers etc. When I make the trip to Thailand to get my machine fixed, I'd like to know that someone there will know what to do to sort this problem, without me being faced with the prospect of having to pay a lot of money to buy a new one or replace hardware that is not in fact needing replaced. That is why I posted on this forum. Was I mistaken in thinking that in the entire Mac using community, there isn't more than one other person having the same issue as me? Is anybody from Apple aware of this problem and do they have any idea how to fix it? I'm not seeking to be antagonistic here, I'd just like to think that somebody, somewhere out there has some idea, what has gone wrong with my PowerBook and can help me get it fixed.
p.s I sorted out the large fuzzy Apple on startup by zapping the PROM, so that doesn't seem to be directly connected to the game of green light tennis I can now play between my caps lock and num lock keys. (My caps lock key is permanently lit and when I try to turn it off, it reduces the volume of my speakers and "types" "rfr" and other such gobbledegook.)

  • IPad is acting very strange, also after hard reset. No sliding to open possible.

It all started with my iPad doing things on its own, opening and closing apps, starting music, skipping songs and opening photo's. All without me push any buttons, so I did a hard reset, tried to restore it. But not I cannot not even open my iPad, when I try sliding to open, it i not working at all. Not even after another hard reset and new configuration. Some kind op virus seems to have caused damage. Any advice on what to do next? I am clueless,
Your help would be highly appreciately.

"so I did a hard reset, tried to restore it. But not I cannot not even open my iPad"
Just to reiterate what Tedfixit said - I would book an appointment at the Genius Bar as well. If you restored it and it is still acting up, the device should be evaluated.

  • Many Applications Not Loading - Very Slow Startup

    Hola!
I have a MBP 15" bought last September, which I updated to Mac OS X 10.4.10 recently. The first noticeable change in performance came when I saw the fonts in my Dashboard had all changed - on the dictionary/thesaurus and stickies.
    Then came the following:
1: Grey-screen startup went from hardly noticeable to about 40+ seconds.
2: Desktop startup went from roughly 0.8 seconds to 30 seconds.
3: Numerous applications will not open. At all. Activity monitor show them attempt to load, then 'not respond' and shut down. Only some applications won't open (iTunes; Photoshop CS, etc) - others like iPhoto and Firefox open then crash when loading GMail or Google/when accessing photo files/lots of data. Notepad and other smaller applications seem to work fine.
Only 1/4 of my HD is full at the moment; and there doesn't seem to be any memory problems -- but I have no idea what is wrong, or what I am supposed to do to fix it. The disk has been scanned with Disk Utility for faults in itself and its performance and non have popped up.
I am a heavy user (work and school!), and this is nothing short of distressing.

Thank you for welcoming me, and for your reply; its only I carried out those suggestions and they did not improve the performance of my machine.
However while I was carrying them out I discovered the following; that when I try to search through my Documents & etc (I was attempting to transfer files to USB flashdrive), Finder occasionally crashes and reloads the desktop. In addition, my CD drive refused to acknowledge a CD once inserted, and made a quizzical clicking-whirring noise. It refused to eject the CD until I restarted the machine and pressed eject during grey-screen startup.
I was advised to boot from CD & load an archive of my HD; but I am afraid that wouldn't effect the problems I am having - even if my CD drive decides to work. Could this be not a software, but a hardware problem?

  • Music will not open (iPad2 is acting very strange)

Just bought the SD card adapter for my iPad2.  At first itwoudn't even register, then a message told me that the hardware was not compatible.  Then I reset and it worked.  I proceeded to import some photos and after doing so tried to view a slide show with music.  the music would not play.  I went to music and tried to open the app...  It opens and then immediately closes.  I have tried power offs, resets, adjusting settings,  and nothing works.  Any ideas, fixes, suggestions?

It is time to restore it to the factory settings.

  • Palettes controls acting very strangely

    Hi all,
I'm using Indesign CS3 and over the last week, I have noticed some odd behaviour from the palettes. This problem seems to exist on all palettes I've tried. It is especially noticeable when trying to go up or down point sizes / mm using the keyboard arrows:
The application almost seems that after I've clicked on the palette control text, the mouse's focus reverts back to the item on the page.... Even to the point that if I want a paragraph of text to be 18pt in size, by the time I have typed "18" ID has moved focus back to the paragraph.... hence the paragraph will now read "18".
This is incredibly frustrating and time-consuming. I cant figure if it's a particular document or something screwy INSIDE the document.
Has anyone come across this before?
    Many thanks,
    Aaron
A few details about my system.
    • A brand new installation of OSX 10.4.11
    • All the CS3 apps are up-to-date (which was another set of weird altogether, by the way)
    • Very few fonts active, but using Extensis Suitcase X1 (11.0.5.1)

I removed the Suitcase plugin from InDesign.... I think that was the problem, I'll be using ID all today, so I'll know hopefully by tonight - thanks for the pointer.
Very odd thing though, as we were using the same setup before (the hard rive failure) and all the apps were up-to-date then also...
As a result, I'm seriously considering moving my font management to FontXplorer and see if that helps things... Our version of Suitcase is pretty old now, it might not be helping matters. Any thoughts on that?

  • Macbook acting very strange

Hi, guys  hope you could help me out I'm really confused :[
So basically i fell asleep with my macboook open next to me (while also charging). This is not the first time i have done this.. usually however i would touch the mouse pad and it would ask me to type in the password as it logged out overnight... This morning when i typed in my password i found that my screen saver changed on it's own back to the "stock" one of the colorful wave..so i restarted the computer to find out that the screen saver was still the "stock" one.. so i changed it back..
The next thing I noticed was the fact that my FaceTime/iPhoto apps could not connect to camera... so i quit and did a restart which resolved nothing....
I also happened to notice that my applications got jumbled up and some got lost like EuroTruckSimulator2..while other like Serato DJ lost the midi's mapping files
i did download apps from the App Store the previous night and i did do a reformat on the iPhone a day before but i dont think that might have changed anything..
could my hardisk be on it's way out ?/do i have a virus ? /
i wrote this using the same Macbook
    Technical specs:

  • Touch is acting very slow lately...why?

I've noticed over the past couple days that my iPod has been very slow. It's like it starts checking for mail and just keeps checking and checking and then it'll freeze for like, 3 or 4 minutes before it's usable again.
It'll act the same way sometimes when I simply want to swipe between pages or even open up the note pad or something. It's really odd because I've never had any problems with it up until this point.
I've gone in and changed the push settings, emptied out my history and cache for safari, deleted a couple apps that I thought may be causing it, but it's still doing it. Any thoughts on why this might be happening and how I might go about fixing it? Thanks

how much memory are you using up?
might be worth doing a restore, will clean it up. i restored my ipod yesterday and managed to free up a lot of the memory from 'other'.

  • Skype Acting Very Strange

Ok so throughout the past month or so I have been experiencing some very annoying problems with skype. My first problem is that I cannot send files. Whenever I try to drag a picture or something like that it shows the unavailable cursor. The only way to send files is to be in a call and press the plus button and then send it manually. Another issue I'm having is not being able to see how many messages I have because the taskbar logo has an admin sign on it like this I have tried reinstalling multiple times but nothing changes.

Those problems all appear to stem from the fact that you or someone accessing your computer set Skype to run as Administrator.    Windows permissions will suppress your ability to drag and drop items.  The admin logo is appearing due to this as well.  You need to right click on the Skype shortcut or the Skype.exe on your computer and ensure that compatibility mode is not enabled and "run as Administrator" is unchecked.
