Open Source Firmwa
I know is a stupid thing to say... But if the firmware was open source, wouldn't have these stupid problems been fixed yet? I mean... Lot of programmers like me, that can also code in assembly, would have worked to make the player (In my case Zen Touch 20Gb), OUR PLAYER better in tons of way... If something like this will be possible, in a future... I think Creative will only earn points... Less work to do, Less annoying customers that want their problem solved... The customer will resolve their problems with their hands! I know that is simply the firmware to make the difference beetween a player and another, not only the hardware features... But being the first company in the world to allow the user to modify the firmware for their player... Will be simply a great achievement, also for their business

Petition for Open Sourced Firmw
Well, I've looked over the board and I've found a lot of requests for many different features. Many of these features could be quickly fixed by a firmware modication.
There is a massi've community of programmers who would love to modify the firmware to the Creative line of MP3 players. Just look at the iPod's community. There are hundreds of hundreds of people who have spent hours working with the iPod just to hack some of the graphics. If Creative Labs were to open the source to one of their players, one can only imagine how much it would be improved upon. The mere number of people who would switch to that player just because they can reprogram it would be astounding!
So we, the signed, request the source to the firmware of the Zen MP3 player line up be released to the community, and a license be given accordingly to allow us to share our modifications with other owners of the product.Open source? Shhh, you can't say that word in the forum of a multi-national, million dollar company. Don't be ridiculous. If the firmware go open source, who will pay for the customer support if something goes wrong? The last thing any company wants to do is to pay for customer support. The money can be saved for more important things, like colorful boxes.

Free / open source Closed Captioning software?
I'd like to add closed captions to a feature film I produced. I understand the difference between closed captioning (which is embedded in the video and decoded by the TV) and DVD subtitles, and I would like to add real closed captioning.
Is there any free / open source Mac-compatible closed captioning software I can use to add captions to my feature film and create a .cc file for importing into DVD Studio Pro?
I'm more than comfortable with steep learning curves and X11 interfaces. If I have to use a text editor and timecodes, that's fine too. I just need that .cc file to add true closed captioning to my video, and I don't have the dough for commercial CC software.
Thanks!my company does offer closed captioning as a service, Kelly is correct when he says the software is very expensive. as far as creating a .scc file with a text editor, i don't believe it is possible but i may be wrong. when opening a .scc or .cc file in a text editor, it does look like a bunch of "gobbledygook". but the .cap file that is used to create the .scc or .cc file looks a bit more manageable and could possibly be created without captioning software, again i may be wrong and have never attempted to do it. but say you could do it, you could save a bunch of money by creating the .cap file and giving it to someone who has the software to convert it to .scc or .cc. if that seems overwhelming and want to job it out, you could save some money by transcribing the video yourself which is a significant part of the cost when outsourcing. here is a sample of what a .cap file looks like:

[Solved] Slow graphics with RS780M and open source ati driver
EDIT: Well this is embarrasing. Guess this is why there's a new comers forum. I assumed since I installed a couple days ago my system was up to date. However, running pacman -Syu updated my kernal and it works fine now. SOLVED (I'm an idiot)
Hello Arch community. I've been using Ubuntu for a couple years so know that my hardware can work well enough with linux. Almost everything works great with arch with little setup, but I'm stumped as to how to setup the graphics card.
I'm attempting to use the open source drivers, either xf86-video-ati or xf86-video-radeonhd (I don't care which I use in the end). I have both installed so I can try out both, assuming that doesn't cause problems. I've never tried using the catalyst driver in arch, so I know I don't have remenents of that causing problems. Right I have gnome working, but when dragging a window, resizing a window, scrolling, or watching a video I can see the screen slowly refresh. It is definetly not right.

Adobe is only giving up the free tool for education purposes, or unemployed developer. You didn't say if you were one of those.
I believe over time there will be plenty of room for alternate IDE approaches that support the Flex Framework; and in fact there are quite a few options already out there. -

Axis (both version) are good but why do you want to use something that is not included in JEE API, when Java provide same thing with better performance.
personally try to prevent non standard technologies despite they can be better than core java implementation sometimes.
I don't know Xfire.
the good:
-JAX-WS performance is better than axis,
- you can create your web service simply with annotation.(this means write class and then make it as a service easily)
- support every kind of service invocation(callback,Asynchronous,...)
- architecture is nice (you can operate on SOAP level)
the Bad:
- It is JEE 5 or JSE 6 dependent.
- there is seriously lack of documentation and examples for it, on java web sites and internet. -
DBAShell - New Open Source Project for Oracle DBA's

I've been an Oracle DBA for quite some time (since 7.0.13) and a developer for many years. One of the things I've always wished for was an easier way to set up environment variables for different Oracle Homes and a way to provide passwords to scripts without embedding them in plain-view.
About 3 years ago, I started a set of functions and scripts at my company that did exactly just that and provided many more functions for things like checking database status, running scripts quietly unless errors are detected, running actions in parallel (like fast shutdowns at once, or multiple analyzes), restarting databases in a guaranteed fashion, aliases to common folder locations, etc..
About a month ago, after putting all this time and effort into these scripts and using them in production all this time, I realized I wanted more out of the scripts like support for other databases and thought that it would be best if I gave it new life as an Open Source project.
So that is how http://sourceforge.net/projects/dbashell/ was started. Now its in a second release (DBAShell 0.85) that is more modular and would allow other people to easily add support for other OSs, other Shells, and other Databases.
Here is a description of the project from the latest news item:

Open Source project - request for interest
Hi,
I know this may not be the most appropriate place for this but I couldnt find anywhere else. The project is due to start up in early 2006. The technology is Java based and supports J2EE. It enables developers to work at a high level and generate apps very quickly and more complex functionality can be built using Java to address requirements.
I thought I would post this here for anyone interested in participating in a new Open Source project for a Java development tool.

I have started an open source project to build a module for
PHP4 that will allow direct calls to Tuxedo services from
the PHP script, the project name is php-tuxedo.
Think about it for a second... The ability from inside a
PHP web page to directly call already existing Tuxedo
services anywhere in your environment. Just like PHP can
open a database connection to Oracle or Sybase, it would
open a Tuxedo connection as a Tux client to a Tuxedo
middleware environment.
For those who have used PHP, you know how easy it is to
build dynamic web pages. But those pages are mostly limited
to database queries or flat file access for data. With this
project you could call all your existing enterprise Tuxedo
services directly. I believe this would be a very powerful
enhancement to PHP's capabilities.
To those familiar with Tuxedo, you know about how powerful
an implementation of Tux middleware services can be for
departmental and enterprise solutions.
I want to bring these two pieces together.
Project status. The project is in its early infancy, but
some parts are functional. I have successfully built a
client page that uses a STRING buffer to call a service with
tpcall and returns a STRING buffer back. Primitive? Sure,
but this is only the start. I have ideas of how to
implement many other functions and buffer types including
FMLs.
There is much work to do, but if you are interested please
check out http://php-tuxedo.sourceforge.net. There you can
download my first cut and more importantly follow the
project as it progresses. For the really ambitious I would
welcome any testing or development help on the project.

Error trying to open source media - Compressor 1.2.1
I have a problem with a movie that have been sent to me. I seem unable to add it to a batch in Compressor or in Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD for the that matter.I'm using QuickTime 7.0.3 adn Mac OS X 10.4.3
When ever I had it to Compressor I get this error:

The settings for the offending movie are:
Format: H.264, 640x480, Millions, AAC, Stereo (L R), 22.050kHz
FPS: 29.97
Data Rate: 90 kbytes/sec
Key Frame: Every 300 Frames
The only difference between my test, which works fine, and this file is the frame rate (mine is at 25fps) and the number of audio channels (my test was in mono).
The file I was sent was encoded in Compressor, not sure which one - but I think it might be version 2.
The strange thing is it opens in QuickTime fine. I've tried exporting from QuickTime Pro as another h.264 with mono sound with no joy. I've tried saving a reference of the movie to see if that works, again no joy.
The only way I can get Compressor to accept the file is by transcoding it to another codec, like Soreson 3. Then FCP and Compressor are happy.
What I can't work out is why the h.264 file I made is fine (and any file I still make as well), and the one I was sent is not. I'm also having the same problem with an h.264 file I downloaded from Apple QuickTime Trailers, and an another I found on the web.
Updates that have been done recently incase they might have caused the problem are 10.4.3 and installing Motion 2 Trail (since removed), which wanted to update Pro Application Support (this might be the problem?).
Any help greatly apprieated
HamiI just tried the offending movie file on my Powerbook, it has never seen Motion 2 or those Pro Application Support updates - and it gets the same error.
Very odd indeed - any ideas?

I'm designing cart templates for a company that supplies an interface for uploading product to an open source shopping cart. The problem is I can't open the shopping carts with safari. They are fine with firefox and on a PC. (forgive me for swearing) The sites are open source carts based on php scripting with a lot of compressed data. A software interface is used to upload products etc... The error I get is
"Safari can’t open the page “not sure if I can put the link here as it is a business”. The error was: “bad server response” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1011) Please choose Report Bug to Apple..."
It's the same for all the sites using the carts.
Is there a fix at the user end or does safari simply not have support for these carts. Any help would be awesome....PCI Compliance. As a merchant (online or brick & mortar store), you must take necessary steps to ensure your customer's CC info doesn't fall into the wrong hands. One way to do this is to pass your online customers off to a 3rd party processor like PayPal or Authorize.net. These companies are experts in safely gathering sensitive data, encrypting it and transmitting it to your payment Gateway and Merchant Bank account. This way, your customers never enter any sensitive data into your site's databases which avoids a lot of headaches for the web developer and merchant.
Server Security. Use a reliable web host. I can't emphasize this enough. Cheap hosting is no bargain especially if your host doesn't take reasonable steps to secure their servers at their end.
Lock down your php scripts & form log-ins to defend your site against possible hackers & robot exploitation. If your site is ever compromised, you will need reliable backups of your Site files and MySql data. Make sure to backup these files regularly and store them in a safe place.
Backend log-in. Use strong, encrypted passwords -- 17 characters, upper & lower case with symbols. If you can remember your passwords, they're not strong enough. I keep mine written down in a Rolodex.
Change the Admin log-in name to something less obvious like GrandHighExhaltedMysticRuler or something only you will recognize as the site's admin level user. It's also a good idea to change your server, database and backend log-ins regularly.
Finally, consider running SecureLive on your web server. I have it running on a dedicated server and this software has more than paid for itself. It identifies hacker attempts, blocks the user and sends the hacker's IP address to an FBI database. SecureLive - Home

Any exporter developers interested in an open source plug-in project?
Most of the discussion here in the past few months has been about exporter plug-ins, so I know there's no shortage of exporter developers on this forum.
There is a very useful frameserver plug-in that's used to export video out to a tiny signpost file, which can then be used as an input file for other programs. This has been a crucial part of the workflow for those using other applications for video processing or final encoding. This exporter has been maintained and updated through CS4, but the original developer, Satish Kumar is unable to continue working on the project to update it for CS5. So he's made his plug-in open source here:

So if any developers are interested in contributing to a open source plug-in project, you have one waiting for you.Just wanted to provide an update this thread - the exporter has been brought forward to CS5, thanks to some coordination between interested users that were willing to pool their donations together and pay for a developer.
