Hi all
Not sure where to post this.I am looking for an open source news group one similar to java forums where users can post comments on my application and stuff.Is there anything of such kind which
is open source so that i can save time rewriting a similar one.I googled and tried some other sites but attempts were in vain.

I see what you are saying but i don't think my company allows me to do that since its an in-house tool and i don't have much idea about how confidential they might consider posting
things on an external server.So i'm planning if i could get an open source project or library which does that i could provide the space and stuff needed for it to work.

well u can acheive this by using 'target=_blank' in href tag whether you call href from servlet / jsp.

Open Source on NetWeaver AS Java

Hi Experts,
We implemented a project based on Spring and Hibernate. It works fine on NW AS Java if server's JDK is Sun JDK. However, when we deploy to the production server, its JDK is IBM JDK, it shows following error. Could anyone give any suggest ?

I need a easy setup open-source CRM app. in Java, to run it in on JBoss

Hi!
I need a easy setup CRM app to install it on JBoss server. I have Windows 7, Netbeans 6.7.1, with JBoss server installed, I have Glassfish too, but I don't have the permission to use it. I've already tried to setup CentraView, ofBiz, oeCrm, SugarCE, vTigerCrm, but didn't managed. I want an app with a nice interface(skins, templates).
Can someone help me? Someone which already used or implemented something like this?
I'm new in Java EE.

I have seen talk of open-sourcing Java in the media for a long time, and searching Google yields many results.

Why is it good for java to be open source?

i have use red unix and it is not as good as windows, though it does have its uses for calulcations, but why would we want java to go down this road?

Open Source project - request for interest

Hi,
I know this may not be the most appropriate place for this but I couldnt find anywhere else. The project is due to start up in early 2006. The technology is Java based and supports J2EE. It enables developers to work at a high level and generate apps very quickly and more complex functionality can be built using Java to address requirements.
I thought I would post this here for anyone interested in participating in a new Open Source project for a Java development tool.
I apologise in advance if anyone gets upset over this post - but I thought Java developers should be aware of the project.

Web Dynpro for Open Source

Dear Web Dynpro community,

Hi all,

let me add some comments on some parts of the answers (also in the two blogs around this topic ..).
In general it is really interesting to see that there seems to be a real interest for an "open sources" Web Dynpro for Java. This is motivating to go into this direction and to further discuss this here within SAP.

Some technical comments: I agree that an open-source WDJ (in the ideal world) would include also the WDJ tools parts and most probably also UR ( = Unified rendering) as the underlying (HTML) rendering technology. Also NWDI is somehow part of this game. BUT: I do not think that such a big step is realistic and feasible. Instead of this the first natural step for me would be to open-source the WDJ runtime part. This WDJ runtime contains all important parts needed to run WDJ applications (including the control libraries, the different CMI model implementations, the different clients and last but not least the server-abstraction layer).

This server abstraction layer (SAL) is most probably not know by the WDJ community as this was never rolled out in the past. As the name shows this layer encapsulates the server environment "hosting" the WDJ runtime. This allows us even today to run WDJ applications besides the SAP JEE also in top of a simple TomCat installation. This version is used for a long time for control development but was never rolled out.

In the labs we have WDJ application running on Amazon Cloud, on Google App Engine, on Bea and also on top of Geronimo.
Not all of these server abstraction implementations are fully working for the moment and not all features are available for all implementations - but it would be really straightforward to provide all these implementations - in the ideal case of course via a active open source community ,-)

Besides the platform implementations I see some other areas how an open sourced version of WDJ could be extended:

The combination of WDJ projects with Maven. This is also on our internal development list but due to prios this was never started.
New controls. Also without open-sourcing the UR layer I see a lot of potential to extend existing controls or to build completly new controls.
"Generation-free WDJ" - the idea would be to provide a WDJ version which is not depending on a complex generation framework. This would be of course one option but a "generation-free" WDJ would allow you to code your WDJ apps / components completly without any generation.
Extending the usage scenarios for "system components" - this kind of WD components is used to extend WDJ runtime capabilities. Currently this is only used for the "Technical Info" and the UI of the implicit personalization but there is a lot of potential to extend this.

This is only a very short list of things I have currently in mind - for sure you will find more.

Java3D Open-Sourced

Is this the beginning or end of an era? On the one hand, with J3D open-source, many developers can contribute to it, but on the other hand, the move also means that Sun was unable/unwilling to maintain and improve Java3D on its own. And there were already several open-source 3D libraries for Java - Xith3D for a high-level API, JOGL as an OpenGL wrapper, etc. Is there any reason to use Java3D in particular over these API's?

The real reason is that you want the advantages of Java3d over the advantages of Xith3D or the gl wrappers.
Of course, the comparison of j3d with the opengl wrappers is misguided- they do different things, but the real advantages of java3d are thread-safety and the output options it gives you in terms of CAVE and so on. Xith3d sacrifices those for speed and low-level-access, making it a better option if you are interested in writing games.
Whether the future development of the API in an open-source direction will actually unify or further separate these elements remains to be seen, but I guess as the j3d community, it is pretty much in our hands.

New Open Source Project - Java, Struts, EJB

There is a new open source project called Centraview. This is an open source CRM/SFA application which can provide a business a full view of their enterprise from lead generation, sales, contact management, project management and integrate into accounting. The development has been going on for more than a year now and they've now taking this open source, so there is alot of opportunity for Java developers to get involved with project that really takes advantage of Java technology. The system is built on the Struts framework and utilizes JBoss as the EJB container, the back-end database is MySQL although there is some initiatives to look at DB abstraction. Anyway here's the link:

Anyway I decided after examining Centraview, that we're not going to be building our own, but using Centraview and it's nice to know we can take part in development and understand the inner workings, so we never limit ourselves.

On windows I believe you can also use "script host" and the newer powershell but I have used those.

Legalities of modifying open source Java classes in a closed source App

If there is a better forum for this thread please let me know. I looked and looked and couldn't find any place where it seemed to fit.
Simply put, I want to know the legal ramifications of modifying open source Java classes which have been included in a commercial closed source application.
The specifics are my problem with the javax.servlet.http.Cookie classes interpretation with RFC 2019 in regards to acceptable cookie names. I currently am debating that in a thread here:

I am using Adobe ColdFusion which is a J2EE application server running as a servlet in Macromedia JRun. JRun parses request headers and creates instances of the javax.servlet.http.Cookie class for each cookie. (An error is thrown from the constructor if the cookie name is not accepted)
I was able to work around the problem by modifying the code in the Cookie class, compiling it, and using jar.exe util in my SDK to update the new class into the jrun.jar file. I blogged it here:

My problem is I'm not sure if what I did conforms to the license for ColdFusion. Technically JRun is a closed source program I am not allowed to modify, but all I changed was a open source class from Sun. I didn't even need to decompile anything.
I have Googled in vain, but I can't seem to find any information that applies to modifying pieces of open sourced code contained inside of a closed source application.

I'll admit I don't know much about open source and I'm not sure where to start looking since I seem to have a scenario which is not really discussed much on the web. All I am looking for is information and sincere help.And presumably you also understand that we certainly can't give you legal advice but also it would be foolhardy for you to accept it as well.
You learn by reading many license agreements and reading as much about legal situations involving computers and related technical cases as you can.
And until you are comfortable making such decisions yourself without asking then the only useful answer is ask a lawyer.

OPEN SOURCE JAVA GAME

Hi, my name is Dydra and I have been programming an MMORPG in java this last two years. I want to publish an open source Java game to start a new generation of cross platform games, but I can´t do it by myself xD. So I want to share what I have done so far with everyone interested in programming games so that everyone can help making this game.
All the code is not mine: some parts are from the book Killer Programming Games. I adapted the 3D MMO engine of that book to an 2D engine and customized some things.

Do you know the best part? It is almost finished. The things that need to be finished are:
-Leveling up and stats (no big deal)
-GUI (like menus and invetaries. no big deal too)
-NPC (this may be the most complex part)
- Shop and Players Party/Trade
-Drops
THE REST OF THE GAME IS DONE! I already did a map editor with custom map objects and will be used to place Non Agressive NPCs. I also made a custom set up of menues and skills. To have a skill or item into the game you just need to open your wordpad and write the img file and what the item does (damage, heal, equip, instant spell, etc).
I need help to improve animation of the sprites, skills, improve the GUI ( I did it all myself but it's kinda crappy, you know) and the NPC. As I want it to be a PVP oriented game because there is no real RPG PVP oriented game. Most PVPs are MMOFPS like GunZ.
