Open the cover on the airport extreme

Has anyone done this successfully? I need to look at the electrical cord jack as I think it might be slightly bent.
Thanks,
Roger

  • How can I open the ports with the Airport Extreme?

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station connected to a cable modem and I want to open the ports for the two Playstation 3's I connected to the Airport Extreme via Cat 6 ethernet cable. The first Playstation 3 will be used to play Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and the other Playstation 3 will be used to watch streaming movie from Netflix. Does anyone know if this can be done?

It is documented on Page 54 of Apple's "Designing
AirPort Networks Using AirPort Utility Mac OS X v10.5 + Windows" (direct PDF download link).
The public port and private port would be set the same value.

  • I bought airport extreme to increase coverage in my 2 story home.  It uses an ethernet connection. There are dead zones which I had hoped to cover with the addition of the airport extreme, but it didn't help.  Any suggestions?

I bought an airport extreme to increase the coverage in my 2 story home.  I get good fast coverage in some spots on both floors, but complete dead zones in other areas.  The airport extreme did not help.  It is connected by ethernet to my cable modem which has a high speed connection.  Is there a configuration I should try to help with these dead zones?
    Thank you- CC in Minneapolis

Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for details on how to best place your base stations for maximum coverage.

  • Macbook or iPhone does not see the internet on the Airport Extreme

This morning I found my Macbook could not connect to the internet, no matter what I tried.
I reset the cable modem. All lights are green.
I reset Airport Extreme. The light is green.
I connected my Macbook directly to the Airport Extreme: the diagnostic came back all green.
I called the cable company, verifying the IP address. Everything confirmed.
But I can't get the internet to appear on my MacBook. Even if it is plugged directly into the cable modem. My Macbook acknowledges that the Airport is there and it verifies I am connected. Just no internet.
I also have the iPhone, which cannot connect to the Airport. I have no other computers on the network.
I'm lost. Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks Duane!
I talked with the cable company for an hour. From their end, they verified everything was working correctly. And when I plugged my MacBook directly into the cable modem, I verified the IP address matched what they displayed on their screen. Also the green lights on the cable modem indicate that it is receiving data and, every blue moon, can send data.
When I say "no internet", I mean when I open Safari or Firefox web pages are not displaying. Safari returns with "Safari cannot find the server". I checked Yahoo, Google, Apple and none of the sites are able to come up through my web browser. Mail wasn't able to retrieve my messages.
On my iPhone, I can't remember what the error message was but I wasn't able to connect either.
Thanks so much for your time.

  • HT1145 The airport extreme used with my iMac is not seeing my other devices...anybody, please?

The airport extreme used with my iMac is not seeing my iPhone 5, iPad (third generation) or my windows based PC.  When I open the airport utility it shows only the internet and my iMac.  It does not identify the others.  Any thoughts?  Thanks

    Hi DaileyT,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at this article:
When do Apple wireless devices appear in AirPort Utility?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3624
    Troubleshooting missing devices
If your Apple wireless device doesn't show up in the wireless device list, try the following:
Check to see that the device is turned on.
Check that the device is connected to the network via Ethernet or in wireless range of your computer.
Make sure the device has had adequate time to start up and become discoverable. In the case of Apple wireless devices that are not connected via Ethernet, AirPort Utility scans for new devices once every 15 seconds. From the time a device becomes discoverable (typically around one minute), it could take up to another 15 seconds before the device is displayed in the list.
If you have just configured a new Apple Wireless device, upgraded the firmware, selected "Restore Default Settings..." or have hard reset and configured an Apple wireless device and it does not show up in AirPort Utility after restarting, you may have an incorrect setting. You may want to hard reset the unit and set it up again.
If you are connected to a specific wireless network, all Apple wireless devices which make up that network will appear. However, if you "Restore Default Settings..." from AirPort Utility, or hard reset a device that is out of physical wireless range of the computer, you will need to move the device closer the computer to configure it again.
    Best of luck,
    Mario

  • I just bought the AIrport Extreme to replace an older Linksys wireless g router. But I am still getting a fairly low signal, not showing much improvement from the previous router. What gives?

I just bought the airport extreme router to replace my older linksys g router because of a poor signal. Now that I have the new router running, I'm not seeing much improvement from the previous router! What gives?

I too recently bought the Extreme to replace an old Linksys G and discoverd that the range of the new Extreme was surprising less than the Linksys.
Nothing had changed otherwise; both routers were installed in the same place (on floor, under a cabinet in the middle of my house).
I returned the Airport Extreme to Amazon and bought another (the latest version), and the same problem exists, i.e., I can't get a signal at the corners of my small home with the Airport, where I once could with the Linksys.
I'm puzzled, but think that difference must be that the Linksys has 2 large external antennas and the Extreme's antennas are mounted internally.
I've also noticed that Apple sells a wall mount for the Airport Extreme and am assuming this is to get the Airport up and out into the open in order to improve its 'send and receive' characteristics, no?
If your Extreme is hidden in a cabinet or under some piece of furniture, I suggest you move it into the open and see if this helps extend its range.
    Hope this helps.

  • Does the Airport Extreme support Port Fowarding?

I'm trying to get the remote access for my HP Media Server running through my airport extreme.

of course it does. Read the help documents for more information.
open the airport utility application that should have been installed from the disc that came with the device. Then click the help menu item and pull down to airport help.

  • What program(s) opens the airport utility download file

I am installing on PC and have nothing to open a dmg file - any suggestions

1} do I bypass the router and hook the Airport Extreme directly to the phone line or
That won't work as the Extreme does not have a built-in modem. Your older router must be a combination modem & router or gateway device.
    2) (as the guide suggests) connect an ethernet cord from the LAN output on the existing router to the WAN input on the Airport - I have tried both with no success so
This is the correct connection for the Ethernet cable. The key now is to reconfigure the Extreme as a bridge. This will allow the existing router to continue to provide the necessary NAT & DHCP services for network clients connected to either router to gain Internet access.
To configure the Extreme as a bridge, either connect to the Extreme's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to one of the LAN port of the Extreme, and then, using the AirPort Utility, change the following these setting:
AirPort Utility (v5.x) > Select the Extreme > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection tab
    Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update to apply the new settings.

  • Is the Airport Extreme Hard Drive sharing ok for Time Machine?

With leopard on the eve of its release, I wanted to get a large network accessible storage solution that would allow my wife's and I's Macbook pros to use time machine on the network drive when we were at home. Since we rarely use our laptops while sitting at a desk connected to an external drive, I figured this would be a great idea and started to look into various NAS solutions.
Surprisingly, most generic (netgear, western digital) network drives require you use proprietary software to connect to them, and are only compatible with windows xp. After seeing the options the airport extreme opens up in terms of network storage I figured it would be the best bet.
Do you have any other suggestions besides getting an airport extreme? I would rather not have to buy a full blown mac that I have to leave on 24/7 to share the drives. Or do you see any possible pitfalls to this idea? Such as, would time machine forget to use the network drive after a while since it wouldn't always be available to it when away from home?

Unless the content of time machine is minuscule, USB will perform the worst at consistent data throughput. You might consider an ethernet storage device instead. The base station supports Gigabit Ethernet (though Wireless 'n' is maximised well below that).

  • Set the Airport Extreme to not broadcast the SSID

Set the Airport Extreme to not broadcast the SSID

"Hiding" the SSID will do nothing to protect you from hackers.....and anyone else who wants to see your network, since there a numerous free utilities on the Internet that will reveal your network in seconds.
On the other hand, it might keep a few honest neighbors from seeing the name of your wireless network.
iOS devices often have trouble connecting to a "hidden" network, so you may need to display the network if your iPhone, iPad, etc have trouble connecting to the network.
    Your call on this.
Assuming that you have Lion, Mountain Lion or Mavericks on your MacBook Pro.....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the AirPort Extreme icon, then click Edit in the smaller window
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next window
Click Wireless Options at the bottom of the window
Enter a check mark in the box next to Create Hidden Network
Click Save, then click Update and allow a full minute for the AirPort Extreme to restart

  • My PC can connect to the airport extreme but with encryption it cannot connect to the internet my iMac has no issues, any help.

My PC can connect to the new airport extreme I just purchased but with encryption it cannot connect to the internet my iMac has no issues.  If I open the airport exteme up and provide no security everything is fine which leads me to believe it is something with the encryption between the two devices.  Not sure what step I'm missing here this shouldn't be this difficult.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I am asking if the DNS IP addresses, not the IP addresses assigned by the DHCP service, are the same. DNS is like the Internet's version of the Yellow Pages. Your ISP typically will provide them to you or you can elect to use those provided by another source, like OpenDNS.
DNS is the service that translates a website's URL to its actual IP address so that you can access it. I am just trying to rule out that the PC is not configured properly with the correct DNS IP information.
The other thing to check is if the PC is configured to use a Proxy service. By default, it would not be.
Finally, what is the make & model of the PC. More importantly, if the PC is using either a PCI or USB wireless adapter, what is its make & model?

  • I cannot get wireless connection from my AirPort Extreme, despite my ipad confirmed i am wireless connected to the AirPort Extreme.

I cannot browse pages like Google or Yahoo as i get error message saying "Safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding".  I have tried resetting the Airport Extreme to factory setting and unplugged everything and reconnected them, but still i see that my ipad has connection with the Airport Extreme but i cannot browse the internet using wireless via my ipad.  can anyone help ?

Did you ever get an answer to this? Or figure out a solution? I have the same problem.

  • I cannot connect to att...the diagnostics shows that the airport extreme is connected to the web...

I cannot connect to the web (att) via Airport Extreme...the diagnostics sees nothing wrong with the system

Since the Speedstream is a router, you would want to make sure that the AirPort Exteme is in Bridge Mode. In addition, check to be sure that the Ethernet cable from the Speedstream is connected to the WAN port (circle of dots icon) on the AirPort Extreme.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
    Settings should look like this:
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings and give the AirPort Extreme 25-30 seconds to restart
Then power cycle the entire network by powering everything off, order is not important
Start the Speedstream first and let it run a moment
Then start the AirPort Exteme the same way
Start each device one at a time the same way
    Check for propoer operation

  • Recently bought the airport extreme , was able to get my Mac book connected and working , I'm

Hi guys , I recently bought the airport extreme router I was able to get my mac working , but my I phone and a laptop doesn't wirelessly connect ..
I have sat for hours trying to figure it out no luck.
Can I get some assistance ? Very much apprecIated

I had a similar problem, wasted an evening on it. If your service is working on the big Mac, but not the laptop, then try this. Connect an Ethernet cable between the Airport and the laptop. On your laptop, open your Network Preferences. Ethernet should be hilited on the left. On the right be sure your network name is showing in that bar. Wait.
Open your browser and see if you can connect to an Internet site. If successful, then go back to your Network Preferences window. Click on Advanced. Then click on TCP/IP. Note the IP address and the Router address there. Now disconnect the ethernet cable from the laptop.
Now return to the first Network Preferences window and hilite Airport on the left. Then click on Advanced. Next click on TCP/IP. Then click on Configure IPv4: to say Using DHCP with manual address. Now you should be able to write that "noted" IP address in the space.  Click on DNS and add the "noted" router address in the column on the left by using the little + beneath the column. Be sure to click OK or Apply on the screens when you make changes. Now go back to your first Network Pref screen. Does the hilited Airport say it is connected? Try your browser, can you access the Internet? This is what worked for me.

  • What's the most recent opinion about Time Machine backups to Hard Drives connected to the USB port on the Airport Extreme Base Station (5th generation)?

I have been searching the Apple communities and Internet for a final answer.  I just bought an Airport Extreme Base Station (5th generation) and LaCie d2 quadra 1TB external drive as a replacement for TWO failed Time Capsules, neither of which Apple would replace due to failed power supplies.  I formatted the 1TB drive using Disk Utility (Mac OS extended (journaled)) from my MacBook Pro, and then plugged into the Airport Extreme Base Station USB port.  The Airport Extreme Base Station see the Hard Drive, and my MacBook Pro sees the Hard Drive in my finder under shared resources.  Time Machine, however, does not see the drive.  Is there a solution for this problem?  If Time Machine will not work, is there another software product out there that will work, like Carbon Copy.  Having to plug the backup drive into the USB port of your laptop every evening kind of defeats the purpose of having a laptop.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Keeping in mind that this is not supported by Apple, I have been successful at doing the following:
    1) Format the entire drive (1 Partition) as Mac Extended (Journaled). You must click in Options and set it as a GUID Partition Table (first option)
    2) Plug drive via USB to AEBS
    3) Using Airport Utility, use Manual Setup, then under Disks, select the new Disk and click File Sharing, then Enable File Sharing and Secured Shared Disks (recommended, of course). Other settings are up to you.
    4) IMPORTANT: you will NOT see this Disk in Time Machine until you open Finder and double-click on it. You will not need to do this again (hopefully).
    5) Now it should appear in Time Machine. Remember to exclude any large files like Virtual Machines, since they will be re-backed-up (is that a word?) every time it changes in any way.
    6) Remember that the first backup (over WiFi) is the longest. Leave the computer alone during this period.
Good luck, and let us all know how it went for you!

  • How do i use the airport extreme to extend my wireless network

How do i connected my airport extreme up to my existing network so that it can extend my wireless through out the house ??
Can it be done wirelessly or do i need an ethernet cable thats about 10m ?
    Keith

The AirPort Exteme can "extend" your existing wireless network (using wireless only) if it is being provided by another Apple router.
If your current main router is not an Apple product, then you will need to plan to connect the AirPort Extreme to your router using an Ethernet cable.
Post back for more information if needed.
