Open Tray on old iMac w/o correct keyboard

How can I open the tray on my old white iMac. (the kind with the 1/2 globe at the bottom?)
I have a non-Apple keyboard, and there is no eject button on it. Once a disk is in, we can drag it to trash to eject.
But how can I open the tray in the first place?
Thanks for your help!

The "half-globe" iMacs are G4s and have a separate forum here:

Suggest you post future questions about this computer over there,
That said, try:
1) Plugging the mouse directly to the computer and holding the mouse button down while starting. On most Macs, that will open the tray.
2) Pressing and holding the F12 key on most keyboards can open the tray. You need to press for up to a second depending on the Mac and the keyboard
Here's a work-about that puts an eject icon in your menu bar (instructions are for Tiger but should work in Panther or Leo):
Follow this path of folders: Macintosh HD -> System -> Library -> Core Services -> Menu Extras. Inside the Menus Extras folder is a little file named Eject.menu. Double-click that file and you get a handy eject icon near the right end of the menu bar. Clicking/holding it is exactly the same function as the eject key on an Apple keyboard.
Also consider upgrading to Tiger the rest of the way. Your equip limne says you are at 10.4.3 and the latest is 10.4.11.. Taking it to the top gives you access to modern browsers.

  • Old imac needs a new keyboard!

I have the old imac-- PowerPC G4 running on Mac Os X version 10.4.11.
I need a new keyboard, but don't necessarily want to upgrade the software to 10.5.... any suggestions? Or do I need to upgrade? Also, what would I need to get to upgrade? This is where things get very confusing to me! This desktop is my secondary Mac, but would still like to use it without putting a lot of money into it!!
    Thanks!!

You can use any keyboard but not the latest Apple aluminum ones.  If you want one of thoseyou need to upgrade to 10.5. Leopard, but you would need to buy a retail disc to do it.

  • Old iMac & Open Firmware Troubles

    Hi,
I have an old iMac (G3 I think?) that did run Mac OS 9.1; until one day I shut off the power via the power button instead of the GUI way, and the next time I turned it off it quit on me. It now (every time it turns on) mockingly shows a blinking folder with the Finder logo and questionmark blinking intermittenly.
So naturely, I brought it to the Apple store, hoping they would help me as they did my old Powerbook 1400c. They did, but not enough to get it functional.
Anyway, I've been able to get it to boot into Open Firmware (via Command+Alt+O+F); but that's it. I tried issuing common commands that people have said worked for them, but to no avail. For example, I used "mac-boot", "boot hd:,\\", "reset-nvram" (or whatever that command is to reset the NVRAM), "reset-all", and even  used "boot cd:" (and "boot cd:,\\") while my Mac OS 8 install disk is in there (I don't have 9), but it does not work.
Whenever I issue the "boot hd:,\\" and "boot cd:"; it comes up with the following message:
             load-size=0 adler32=1
             LOAD-SIZE is too small
So my question is this: how/what can possibly be done to get this old computer up and running again? Some people have suggested it could be the logic board, but I am deeply hoping not (I dont' have the skill or money required to get & install one). Any ideas?
            Thanks!
P.S.- Does anyone know the boot command to make it boot from CD? I think the apple guys tried it already (and did not work), but I might as well try again. Also, if it's any help, the Open Firmware version is 3.0.f2 .

    Hello,
Would it be correct to assume that the PRAM has been successfully reset?

It is possible that the internal 3.6 V battery is bad. This may or may not affect the ability to locate a valid system.

    >Mac OS 8 install disk is in there
Is it a Mac OS 8.1 or 8.5 CD that came with the computer, not a plain Mac OS 8 disc?
    >Does anyone know the boot command to make it boot from CD?
Normally, one would press the C key. However, if this does not work, you could try holding down the four keys Command(Apple) + Option(Alt) + Shift + Delete(Backspace).

  • Secure downloads: how do I get old Word to open them on new iMac?

I had MS Office X and installed it (via data wire from old iMac) on my new iMac. The problem is that the new MS Office that is preinstalled wants to open all my downloaded documents. They are now downloading as "secure download" and my old version won't open them. My old version can open any document only after the document is downloaded and opened in the new MS Office 2004.
I'm only using Office as opposed to Appleworks because tables/spreadsheets don't cross over from one platform to another easily and Office is the predominant software for those with whom I correspond via email.

  • I can't open any applications on my old Imac G5

Hi!After I reinstalled the original OSX 10.3 on my old Imac G5 20 inch. bought in2005, I can't open any applications and access my files. How do I fix that? Thanks! Michel D

    Hi! Brian
    Thanks for your reply!
I reinstalled the OS 10.3 from the original disks i got when I purchased the G5. I can't open anything. I can't even see any files that I had before the reinstallment. Ithey must be there still because the hard drive shows that I have only 15Gigs of space left out of the 150 G of the total capacity. When I click on the apps icons at the bottom of the sceen nothing happens. I  also tried to install the most recentOS for that machine (OSX 10.5 leopard), the installment starts but stalls after a while, the little  coloured wheel starts spinning for ever. I womder if there's some hardware problem!!! This has been a great machine and i'd like to keep it alive. Thanks for any input.
    Cordialement!

  • Problems opening Firefox or Netscape after migrating from old iMac to new

When I set up my new iMac I migrated my internet settings and other preferences and apps from my old iMac.
Now, I can't get Firefox, Netscape or even Internet Explorer to open unless I have my old iMac on and connected via Firewire and router to my new one.
I get a dialog box telling me that: Connection Failed in bold letters and then the following: This file server is running on your machine. Please access the volumes and files locally.
I had a wireless connection on my old iMac cause I needed to connect a windows pc laptop to get on-line in order to work. I have a wireless router which is now connected to my new iMac as the main computer.
Before I turned off and unpluged the old mac whenever I opened Firefox or Netscape my old iMac drive would pop up on my desktop and my browsers would open up instantaneously without a hitch. All other apps open without a problem.
    Any suggestions will be welcomed.

I even tried deleting the preference files and still nothing.
I disconnected the old mac but I still keep getting a dialog box titled AFP Connection Status and Looking up "name computer" and now I get the Connection Failed - The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and try again.

I purchased a new imac (4G, OS X 10.6.8) in Feb 2011 and thought my old iPhoto library transferred over. It wasn't. And I can't get iPhoto to open on my old mac. It says, "can't open your current version of iPhoto using this version of iPhoto. You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto". I don't think my old mac will support the newer version of iPhoto so I feel like I'm stuck (this is why I got a new mac -- cheaper than upgrading all my software, etc). Help! I really need to get to my old photos, and no, they are not backed up anywhere. Thanks.

    You have two options:
Run the Library on a machine that has the same version as the machine that was stolen.
    or
Recover the files from this library and start over from scratch.
    To recover the files:
Go to your Pictures Folder (or whereever you have the back up) and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Your originals are in the Masters folder.
Note this will only recover your photos as imported from you camera.

  • My old iMac (screen sits on a white dome) opens with a tiny folder that flashes a question mark, instead of a login to user's desktop

My old iMac (screen sits on a white dome) opens with a tiny folder that flashes a question mark, instead of a login to user's desktop, when booting up after a forced shutdown. How do I get my operating system working again? Thanks --Jim

The blinking question mark indicates that the firmware could not find a valid Operating System on your machine.
Your harddrive may have failed. Your filesystem may have be come corrupted.
    Try these things.
-- try to boot up from the installation disc.
The startup manager will list all of your bootable partitions then give you a choice of which to boot.  Hold down the option key then power on. Continue holding down the option key until you see the startup manager. This brings up the startup manager. Click on your hd or disc. Click on right arrow key.
-- Sometimes if volumes don't appear in Startup Manager (what you get when you hold down the Option key at startup), you need to reset the Mac's PRAM, NVRAM, and Open Firmware. Shut down the Mac, then power it up, and before the screen lights up, quickly hold down the Command, Option, P, and R keys, until the Mac has chimed twice more after the powerup chime.
Then, before the screen lights up, hold down Command-Option-O-F until the Open Firmware screen appears. Then enter these lines, pressing Return after each one:
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
    reset-all
"The reset-all command should restart your Mac. If so, you have successfully reset the Open Firmware settings."

    Should the fail...
Try taking the battery out for 10 minutes.  Put battery back in.  Cross fingers. Power the machine back on.

Iam trying to erase and reformat my old iMac, it has a 1Tb hard drive in it.  Error pops up and I noticed it is saying that the hard drive is 8Tb.How do I correct this?

I found another forum that had a solution.  Instead of using the recovery discs that came with the mac, use snow leopard to perform the actions that I needed to do.  It worked.  No input/output error and the software recognized the 1Tb hard drive.

  • Transferring files from original imac AND external CD for old imac

I have an original iMac that has tons of files on it I would like to save.  I created a LOT of materials when I was teaching and they are all on the old iMac.  It also has two games I bought on floppy discs that I would really like to keep.  I tried to load files on a Passport, but the iMac won't recognize it.  I have two other old iMacs (not quite originals) as well, but they won't take the Passport either.  They will both take a flash drive.  I can take word processing files (I can't even remember the application at the moment) off the older one and convert them to Apple Works on the other one, then take the converted files to our iMac 9.1 and convert them to Pages.  Then I put them on the Passport.  It is a pain, but at least it works.  I can also save the documents as pdfs and put them directly on the newer iMac and copy and paste in a Pages document.
The original iMac does not lend itself to any of this.  What is the best way to transfer files?  It seems like a very long time ago I tried to connect it to my newer iMac with an Ethernet cable but it wouldn't accept the cable.  If I am remembering correctly I called Apple Support and they said it lacked something that would allow it to connect.  I do not remember if I have tried a flash drive on it or not.  I believe I did and it would not recognize it.
Also, does anyone know how I can manage to save a copy of the games?  Since I bought them on floppies I can't reinstall them if something happens, but I believe it is within the law to make a backup copy.  Someone please correct me if I am wrong.  I do have an external floppy reader for the original iMac, but it only works on user created floppies, not commercial ones.  If I can manage to hook up to a flash drive or another computer and I simply save the game application, will that be enough?  Or is it not possible to know until I try?  Will saving the application get all the necessary files?
My second question concerns the newer (but still really old) iMacs.  My daughter would love to play some of the games she used to play on them, but the CD drives do not work.  Does anyone know where I can get an external CD drive that we can attach to these old iMacs so she can enjoy her games?  The computers work fine; she just can't insert the CDs, because it's next to impossible to get them out again.
I believe on the "newer" two we are running OS 9, at least on one of them.  I do not recall the OS on the original, but it is whatever it came with.  OS 8, perhaps?  It has been probably half a year since we fired it up.
I appreciate any advice and help anyone can give me.  We really like these old iMacs, which is why we still have three of them.  If we can save the files off the original iMac, we would still keep it so we could play our two old games from time to time.  :-)  I would part with one of the other old iMacs, but I really need to get the files first, and since it won't take a Passport I'm wondering if I'm stuck putting files a few at a time on a flash drive.  Do you think it would take an ethernet cable?  It seems like I tried to connect to my newer iMac but I couldn't get the computers to recognize each other.  I followed all the steps for sharing, but I still couldn't get it to work.
    Thank you so much.

Have you formatted the Western Digital Passport drive as a Mac OS Extended (HFS+) volume, or is it factory-formatted for PCs?  If the oldest iMac is only running OS 8, it can't recognize HFS+ volumes.  It was OS 8.1 that introduced that feature.  Additionally, the version of the USB support files (which is somewhat OS-dependent) on the iMacs hard drives affects what will or will not be recognized by those older computers.  With each successive release of the USB Adapter Support, the database of supported devices was broadened.  The easiest way to transfer the contents of the iMac's hard drive is to physically remove it from the computer and connect a USB-to-IDE adapter directly to it.  These adapters come with an external power supply to provide the 12 & 5 volts needed to power the drive.  The data connection block is designed to fit either a 3.5" hard drive or the smaller 2.5" laptop drive, as well as newer drives that connect via SATA.  It has an included USB cable that connects to a standard USB port, enabling direct reading/writing/file transfers from the hard drive to the computer to which it's connected.  These adapters are not Mac-specific in terms of design, so you can buy one at a PC store and use it.  For the purpose of identifying such an adapter, here's one that's often recommended in these Forums, carried by Other World Computing.  As I mentioned, this adapter is not platform-specific, so you can buy/use a less expensive one sold by PCs stores.  I bought one for $15 from Micro Center (PC store), and it has worked with Macs and PCs.  As for removing the hard drive from the old iMac - and I assume that it's one of the original models with a tray-loading optical drive (as opposed to the slightly newer ones that have a slot-loading optical drive), you can find directions for accomplishing that if you do a web search.  The link that I had for one site (that was good for years) is no longer valid.  The iMacs that have a problem ejecting disks are undoubtedly slot-loading models.  There are two wide rubber rollers inside those optical drives that grip the disk to pull it in or feed it out.  Over time, the rubber dries out, causing the rollers to lose their natural gripping capabilities.  If those iMacs have a FireWire port on the side, I'd suggest an external FireWire optical drive.  Today, the only type you'll find is a DVD±RW drive, which is more than you need for your intended purpose.  A basic CD-ROM drive isn't manufactured/sold anymore.  Other World Computing has a few FireWire optical drives, but their least expensive model sells for about $100.  Obviously, that costs more than the value of the entire iMac at this point, but the drive will also have USB connectivity as well.  You may find other uses for it with your other computers (Macs & PCs), especially if they don't have a CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, or DVD±RW drive.  As for transferring a program itself, there could be other associated files.  You'd want to check the Extensions and Control Panels folders for any that are named to likely indicate being a part of the program's installed files.  The Preferences folder will probably have a file that has saved game settings, but a new one would be created when you run the program in another supported computer.  Depending on the age of the program - and you indicated that it was on floppy disks - its compatibility with newer, pre-OS X releases might be limited.  The external USB floppy drive that you use with the older iMac should read commercial floppy disks, but it will not recognize the older 800K (Double-Density) Mac-formatted floppy disks.  They're disks that typically format as 720K floppies in a PC, but the variable-speed FDD in older Power Macs was able to fit an extra 80K of data onto those disks.  A standard 720K "PC" floppy disk should be read by that drive, but it can't recognize an 800K "Mac" disk.  A 720K/800K Double-Density floppy disk only has the slide-lock hole at one corner, while a High-Density (1.44 MB) floppy disk has an additional hole at the opposite corner to differentiate it from the older type.

  • New life for old iMac

My Dad still uses his circa 1998 iMac Rev. D tray loader, since I've kept it alive and up to date by replacing its dead CD-ROM drive from one I bought on eBay, installing more memory (256 MB I think), and OS updates through Panther. He's a cheapskate like me and doesn't want to shell out $1000 for a new iMac. However, lately he's complained this dinosaur was starting to run slow, no surprise since even with a minimal installation of X a few music files and emailed videos left him with less than 400 MB free space on the HD, causing multiple instances of "your startup disk is almost full" messages. Remember this computer shipped with a gargantuan 32 MB memory and a whopping 6 GB hard disk. It ran the latest incarnation of Apple's OS which was OS 8.5. No Firewire on this baby either, so expansion options are limited.
I reasoned I could remove its diminutive 6 GB HD and install the 30 GB HD I pulled from my iMac DV SE some time ago, giving the old iMac some room to breathe. But how to preserve the contents of the hard disk without having to reinstall his programs, files, etc?
    Here's how I did it:
Remember there's no Firewire on the Rev. D so there's no way to connect a bootable external hard disk to it. I do have an iPod which has both Firewire and USB cables though. So I connected my 6 GB iPod Mini to the Rev D iMac's USB port, checked "manually manage music" and "enable disk use". Deleted all music files.
Ran Carbon Copy Cloner and cloned the iMac's disk to the iPod (this took a couple of hours over USB). Set the Rev. D aside.
Opened the DV SE and removed its 120 GB HD. Information from this web site was most useful. Installed its original 30 GB. Booted it from my Panther disk and partitioned the HD to contain one 7.9 GB partition and the balance in another. Installed Panther on both partitions. Booted the DV SE to ensure the Panther installation went OK. No problems.
Just for kicks, I set the startup disk to the iPod over Firewire and booted the DV SE from it. Lo and behold it works! there was the old iMac Rev D's old self displayed on my DV SE. Who would think you could use an iPod as a boot disk? Everything worked like it did on Dad's old machine. Weird!
Selected the startup disk to the larger partition of the 30 GB internal HD and booted it. Ran Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the iPod to the smaller partition. This went a little faster since it's now over Firewire. Selected the startup disk back to the smaller partition of the 30 GB HD.
Removed the 30 GB HD and reinstalled the 120 GB in the DV SE. Made sure the the DV SE still works then set it aside.
Opened the iMac Rev. D and removed its pathetically diminutive 6 GB HD. Installed the 30 GB. Closed it up and it attempted to boot. It wouldn't work and got hung on a blue screen. Hmm.
I booted from a Panther disk. I went to reset the user password, but quickly determined there were no users installed on the boot partition. None. Obviously this would present a problem. Apparently it wasn't a good idea to install Panther on the larger partition using an identical user name and password - I think this confused Panther which deleted the account from the boot partition. If I had to do it over again, I would have set up a temporary account so I could boot from the larger partition and use CCC to restore the smaller partition. Anyway, no immediate solution came to mind, so I did an archive and install, preserving user settings and all that.
Oddly enough the only "user" was the system administrator. Fortunately, the system administrator had all the same user settings and files that my Dad had so I simply renamed the home folder, set the login name and password accordingly, and that was that.
For some reason Safari didn't work. Safari would launch, but no window displayed and clicking on the menus did nothing. I could only select "quit" from the Dock. I checked my permissions, trashed the prefs file, everything I could think of, but nothing helped. In desperation I downloaded and installed Safari from Apple's web site (using Firefox which was already installed and fortunately still worked). Amazingly, the same thing happened again. No menus would work. Finally, about to give up, I extracted an older version of Safari from the Panther install disks using Pacifist. That worked! I have no idea what caused this bizarre problem.
Now, back to the reason I started this to begin with. The boot partition is limited to 8 GB which is better than the 6 GB it used to be, but there is only a little more than 2 GB free now. There is another 20 GB on the remaining partition, but how to use it? As I understand it, you can use Netinfo Manager to map the user's "home" directory to another volume. I haven't tried that yet, but when the boot partition nears capacity, I'll give that a shot. I'm not looking forward to the permissions nightmare that may result.
So, success for now. The machine runs like new, sure it's a little slow but he's not running Photoshop or anything. That fan makes a racket – how spoiled we've become.
There was probably an easier way to do all this, but hey, it worked.
By the way my DV SE runs OS X 10.4.9 flawlessly with a new 120 GB HD and 384 MB memory. I have no plans to retire it any time soon.

    Thank you Robert; that's helpful.
The way to map a user's entire Home folder to another volume is simple: In Netinfo Manager, select the desired user, then change his "home" property to the path where you want the new home folder to be. Theoretically this could be any volume anywhere. You can then completely delete the original home folder.
I tried this with a test account and it seems to work ok, I just had one problem with a haxie (cleardock). It won't load its system preference. Don't know if it's related to moving the home folder or not. In any event, I'd do lots of testing before making this change permanent.

  • Really slow to open files on new iMac

    Hi
I've have a new 3.06Mhz 27" iMac (8gb RAM) at work. It's painfully slow when either opening or saving files - ie something requiring the file dialogue box.
Adobe CS4 being the worst with Dreamweaver & Photoshop taking between 7 and 10 seconds for the dialogue box to open and with Preview or Firefox it's around 5 seconds. This is really annoying and disruptive to work flow. My 3 yr old iMac at home is way faster...
    Any ideas?
I regularly repair permissions - I do have an external drive plugged in for Time Machine...

Hi, as a suggestion I would run Onyx:- http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/onyx.html
Then I would go the SMC route, you will need to determine the correct SMC procedure for your model.
I would also check/reset the Startup Disc (System Preferences)
Did you add the extra RAM or was it factory fitted? Have you run TechTool?
Are the Apps running via Rosetta?...L

  • HT1758 my old imac has no manual button to eject my dvd from the hard drive

I am having trouble ejecting the dvd from my old imac which has no manual button to help me eject manually.

    Force eject a stuck cd/dvd
First try the normal methods to remove the disc. Drag its icon to the Trash can in the Dock or select 'Eject' from the File menu.
If you are running a virtual machine, e.g. VMFusion, ensure that the CD is disconnected from the virtual machine. This will sometimes allow the CD to now show up in Mac OS X.
Shut down the computer and start up whilst holding down the mouse button. This may take some time, but keep your finger on the mouse button right up until the disc comes out or the log-in screen has appeared.
If you have Toast Titanium installed on your computer, choose EJECT DISC from the menubar.
Sometimes you can successfully use the eject disc button in iTunes even if the disc is not visible to the Finder
Open Disc utility and choose the disc you wish to eject in the left-hand pane, then click on the Eject button.
Some Macintoshes have a paperclip hole that you can insert a straightened paperclip into, manually triggering the eject mechanism.
Open Terminal and type "drutil tray eject" to eject the disc/tray, and "drutil tray close" to close the tray.
If your computer has an eject button on the keyboard, restart the computer holding down the Option key. When the startup disk selection screen appears, let go of the option key and press the keyboard's eject button.
