Open URLs in Tbird with Firefox

Using thunderbird-0.5 and firefox-0.8.1, both packages installed with pacman.  When I click on a URL in an email, Thunderbird pops up a dialog asking what application I want to use to open it.  I navigated to /opt/mozilla-firefox/bin/firefox.  Then I get a dialog asking me what profile I want to use.  I have only one, "default."  But it won't let me use it.  It says it is already in use.  This happens regardless of whether or not firefox is running.
I also tried /opt/mozilla-firefox/lib/mozilla-1.6/firefox-bin, with the same result.
How do I get tbird to use my existing firefox profile to open links?  I found some discussion of the issue on the Mozillazine forum, but no authoritative solutions.  I couldn't find anything in the tbird or firefox FAQs, which are overwhelmingly focused on Windows issues.
Any suggestions?

ARRRGH!  It would never have occured to me to edit a bin ... I have a long way to go
There are still some issues with doing it like this, however.  For instance, if I'm already logged in at a Yahoo group site, then I open a new tab from a tbird email link to a second group, Yahoo doesn't recognize that I'm already logged in.  And my sign-in/password data isn't stored in the new tab (the one opened from tbird), I have to re-enter it.  That's not the way the two programs interact under Windows, but under Windows the default is for tbird to reuse the existing active tab if you already have firefox open.  The default action can be changed if you use Tabbrower Extensions (there's an item in the firefox FAQ about this), so that a link from tbird will open a new tab and otherwise all will be as normal.  But of course all this depends upon you first setting firebird as your default browser under Windows.  The difference seems to be that under Linux there is no "default" setting for tbird to interpret -- i.e., there's no "default" browser.
...Which brings me a larger question that should probably be in "newbie corner" -- is the only way around this to run under a DE like Gnome/KDE?

• 3.6.13 OS MAC 10.6.6 - cannot open url within Mail with Firefox as default browser

new iMac (March '10) - no problem til last week - as above - when
Firefox is my default browser cannot open url's form within Mail.
OK when I change over to Safari - but going back to Firefox same issue.
Firefox browser opens but the page does not load....
any suggestions?

I have the same issue. One interesting piece of info is if you quit FireFox (go to dock > right click on firefox icon > quit) Mail will then launch the link into FireFox properly. Somehow though users actions must cause it to fail again. My wife uses our iMac more than I do for email, so I haven't been able to re-create what she is doing to lose the Mail > Firefox functionality. Almost sounds like an OS X bug??

• Cannot open url within Mail with Firefox as default browser

just started happening - Safari as default browser does work - but changing back to Firefox as my default - browser opens but doesn't open page.
any ideas would be appreciated

Works here, but you should quit Mail before changing in the Safari Preferences, and then relaunch Mail so it will pick up the change.

I'm using the Motorola Atrix smart phone with the Laptop Dock. When I open a web page with Firefox I have to hit "Ctl +" three times to make the page fill the screen. Is there any way to set up the Firefox browser to open the web pages the right size in the first place?

The Firefox Page Zoom feature does a domain by domain level of saving the users preferred zoom level settings, there is no default Page Zoom level setting in Firefox.
Try the Default FullZoom Level extension: <br />

Or the NoSquint extension: <br />

• Open a Telnet link with Firefox and bad things can happen

I happened to come across a site with a number of links, and the one I chose happened to be a telnet link. Here was my experience, and I had to put myself into the shoes of the average user who knows nothing about programming.
The link that caused Firefox trouble when Firefox was chosen to run it is this:
telnet://dxc.nc7j.com:7300
Click on the link and Firefox tells you that you need to select a program to open the Internet Shortcut Shell extension DLL. I have never heard of this, and I have no idea what to do here.
Choose to open with Firefox.
Now, if some error-handling routine had caught that Firefox, which is not capable of doing Telnet, was selected by the unknowing person behind the keyboard to go ahead and do Telnet, the error-handler would advise the user to the fact that this protocol is not supported and kill the process that is going to run out-of-control otherwise. Or cause to open the program that will run the Telnet session.
Better yet, I clicked on the Telnet link and offer a better description of the choices.
After all of what happened below, I installed Iron, a Chromium-based browser, and it opened a Telnet session window right away.
So what did happen, I clicked on Firefox to do this chore and was greeted by a never-ending opening of empty tabs and upon closing the browser, it relaunched and was off to the races again. And again.
OK so this ain't getting us anywhere.
Firefox opens once again, this time hit the big red X to close it, and let the prompt to close however many tabs anyway prompt sitting there.
I chose to run CCleaner, and I set that to blow away Firefox Cache and session. Run CCleaner, and tell it to force Firefox closed when it prompts that Firefox is open.
If by chance Firefox launches again, timing was perfect that the file that was causing Firefox to open was not yet cleaned, so run the CCleaner again a few times. When Firefox is no longer opening, we are back to the world of sanity.
Now, I could go in and reset the Tools Options Applications tab and look for Telnet, and replace the use of Firefox with "ask me."
Fortunately, I know a little more than some about the computer, and I knew I had to use a utility to clear out the Firefox cache.
You have a description of the issue in your knowledgebase, but it has Firefox opening endless empty tabs, but Firefox was closed and the situation is under control.. Restart Firefox manually, start a new session and then enter the Tools menu and fix the setting.
There is a knowledge base article on this very topic, but it has the user close Firefox and then all is back to normal. One can open Firefox and get into the menu to fix the issue. There was a mention in there about malware as a possible cause of the constant reopening I experienced, but Malwarebytes scans were clean.
"Well, this is embarrassing!" I have seen that nice touch to Firefox for many years, and may I compliment those who thought of that one.

I agree, it can become a vicious circle.
The default setting to try to restore all the windows and tabs automatically after a crash isn't the best setting. Personally I do change that so I get the "this is embarrassing" screen. So one option would be to file a bug report suggesting this be changed going forward.
Another potential follow-up action would be to update the knowledge base article to better address how to recover in these situations. For example, a user could start up Firefox without restoring the previous session by:
* Launching Firefox with a specific URL
** Using a desktop shortcut
** Using a link in an external application
** On the command line, typing firefox.exe "about:blank"
** (Possibly more ways to do it)
* Renaming the sessionstore.js file in the profile folder
** On the plus side, preserves the option to restore that session later
** On the minus side, difficult for many users to find folders hidden by the OS, and the .js extension may be hidden by the OS
Since the KB is a wiki, you can go in and make edits and improvements. The syntax is a bit funky, but not much worse than this forum.

• Error when attemtping to open the application catalog with Firefox

We are actively migrating to our CM2012 R2 CU1 environment. However, we have a number of different browsers and versions in use.
We've recently seen an issue in Firefox 37.0.1 when some people (but not all) attempt to open the application catalog.  Firefox will display the "This connection is untrusted" message.  The users will select the option of I understand
the risks.  They are presented with the button to "Add Exception".  However, when they select that, nothing happens.
These individuals are administrators on their workstation.  We've tried having them do the "Restart with add-ons disabled" as well as deleting the cert8.db and cert_override.txt files.  They still get the same result.
Then I saw this:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg682077.aspx  Firefox 15??  This document was updated in March.
The majority of our users do not use IE as they prefer Chrome and/or Firefox.
Has anyone experienced this with Firefox?

Couple of notes that may be of value you to:
1.  Even if you are using an alternative browser, the security zones that you see in IE are applied at the OS level, and thus making sure said app catalog site is either in the trusted sites or intranet sites zone is required for everything from auto-sign-in
to app deployment.
2.  Chrome stopped supporting Silverlight back at the end of November.  As that's required for the AppCatalog, that's not an option for now.  Not your direct question, but something to be aware of.

• Cannot open PDF files online with Firefox 4, help suggests foxit but don't know what that is?

Earlier versions of Firefox allowed me to open PDF files online, without downloading. Firefox 4 does not allow me to open and read PDF files online, but requires downloading to computer.
Help suggest altering settings in FOXIT READER, manually, but I don't know how to access Foxit reader, if I have it.
Can I alter settings in Firefox 4, or do I have to go back to earlier version.
Thanks

I was under the impression Foxit was a pdf viewer rather than an addon for Firefox, but maybe there is more than one application with a similar name.
I did not notice mention of foxit in the help, but add-ons are not always mentioned.

• Is Open Software Updater compatible with firefox?

The popup, Open Software Updater, keeps coming in and wants me to download it to keep firefox up to date. Is open software updater a valid firefox updater?

hello logdenfarm, updates are handled automatically & internally by firefox (you can always trigger a check for updates manually in the firefox menu > help > about firefox).
so there is no need for external updaters, which might in some cases also bundle unnecessary or malicious software - i'm not familiar with the program you have mentioned specifically, but if you receive poups form an unclear source you should probably run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the free version of malwarebytes and adwcleaner.

IE uses a Flash ActiveX control.<br />

Firefox uses a different Flash plugin.
Your above posted list of installed plugins doesn't show the Flash plugin for Firefox, so you need to install that Flash plugin.

• Firefox opens all adobe files with firefox web browser. I disabled add-on, but it still does it. How can i disable this feature?

All adobe files now automatically open in firefox web browser, even when opening them from widows explorer. I want all adobe files to be opened in adobe reader as a default. Yet I disable the plugin Adobe Acrobat 11.0.9.29 and it still does this. I can't use firefox this way.

When you open a PDF file that you saved to your computer, by double-clicking the file, does it open with Adobe Reader or with Firefox?
If the PDF file opens with Adobe Reader then follow the instructions in How to disable the built-in PDF viewer and use another viewer to set Adobe Reader as the application for Portable Document Format (PDF) in your Firefox Options for Applications.
If the PDF file opens in Firefox when you open it from your hard drive, even though you have Firefox 33 installed, try uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox:
#Download the latest Firefox version (currently 33.1.1) from mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#*Note: You can use this link for the online (stub) installer or choose the full installer for your operating system and language from this page.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu and click the Exit button ).
#Uninstall Firefox from your computer.
#Reinstall Firefox using the setup file you downloaded before.
<b>WARNING:</b> Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. Doing so could permanently delete your Firefox profile data.

• Unable to open links in emails with FireFox and Outlook Express 07.

Seems to be a javascript error. When it is disabled, links will open. But other problems appear on browser.
Have reset default programs.
Win IE will open links. [ctrl + click] will sometimes open a new window with link. Usually, only the browser window opens with no link showing.
