Open with a particular program

I don't know where this question should go. I use gimp often and a while back I got tired of my Mac asking me what to open images with and so when it asked the question I chose Gimp and then clicked the "Do not ask me this Question anymore" box... This was a big mistake because now if I want to just look at any image I have to wait for the Mac to open x11 and then Gimp. All I want to do is change my preference for images to be opened by Colorsync Utility or another mac program that just opens the image without hassle. I have looked everywhere and cannot find a place where I can change my preference. Any suggestion on how to fix this would be hugely appreciated.

[Mac OS X: Double-Clicking a File Opens the Wrong Application|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2291]
*Changing the application used to open all files of a certain kind*
1) In a Finder window highlight a file of the kind you want to change the application to open that kind of file.
2) While that file is highlighted, select File > Get Info or press command (apple or propeller icon) + i to get a file information window.
3) In the lower part of the info window there is an "open with" menu with a list of applications.
4) If your application is already in the box then it is the default application for opening that kind of file and you don't need to do anything more. Close the get info window.
5) If the application showing in the menu is not the one with which you wish to open the file then select a new application. If your application does not appear there then select the "other..." and track down the application (usually in the Applications folder at the main level of the computer).
6) If you wish to change all files of this type to open with this application in future, make sure the "change all" button is selected.
7) Close the get info window.

  • Get url to open with a particular flash frame showing

Sorry about this, it is my first time posting, hello to all.
I have a site were I embed swf movies on individual html
pages. I have a link/butt to open an html page but I need this page
to open showing a particular frame in that embedded movie. I would
be most grateful for any help.
    Carl

you'll store the frame label (or number) in the shared object
with code in the swf that contains your getURL() code. in
introduction.swf you'll use code to retrieve the sharedobject and
execute a goto statement directed at the frame label (or number).
if you need to specify which movieclip you want to target
with your goto statement that too can be stored in your
sharedobject (as a string) that you'll need to convert to an object
in introduction.swf (using array notation). if you store a number
in your sharedobjec you'll probably need to convert it to a number
(using the Number() function) in introduction.swf

  • Photoshop - open with: choose default program

    Hello,
How do I choose Photoshop as the Default Program to open .jpgs if the program doesn't appear in the "Choose Program you want to use to open this file:"? the
Also, I've Browsed in order to Choose the Default program but when I go to:  Program Files>Adobe>Adobe Photoshop CC 2014>Photoshop.exe and choose this program the Windows Photo Viewer is automatically chosen and Photoshop doesn't EVER appear in my choose of Default programs.
This wasn't an issue with an older version of Photoshop.
    Help!
    Lonnie

Sounds more like a Windows issue than Photoshop.  Can you test the Open with tool with other file types and programs?
I'm also surprised that Photoshop does not appear in the main list, and that you have to hunt for it with Browse.  Have you tried navigating to the same .exe file in Explorer and making sure it launches Photoshop.

  • Odd ... Log & Capture won't open with a particular camcorder connected

Actually ... Final Cut Pro protests in general ... sometimes completely locks up with the dreaded spinning color wheel when this one Panasonic Camcorder is connected. The moment I turn it off or unplug it - FCP returns to life!
I have in the past captured video from this camera, but it has always been a little sketchy - takes a few tries to get log & capture to work with it. Seems it's not working at all now.
Only thing I think I did different in the past was use a different FW cable.
Any reason a particular camcorder could prevent FCP from working?

I plan on trying the other cable (am in Mexico now & that cable is back in the US).
What struck me as odd though, and the reason I thought there might be some camera-specific reason, is that even with the other cable it was always finicky.
Although I could eventually get it to work using that other cable, it almost never worked on the first try (the mini-DV Panasonic PV GS2). Using my Sony Hi-8 Digital cam, it's always 100% reliable, regardless of what cable I'm using.

  • I can't develop my pictures because they only open with the photoshop program

So I finished editing my pictures and I am ready to send them to get them developed but when I try to open them outside the photoshop program, a PSD icon shows up on each one. The layers have been flattened and as far as I know everything is complete as far as the editing process goes so why can't I see them in my normal "My Pictures" folder?

Use Photshop menu File>Scripts>Image Processor... Point the folder you have your PSD files in and have it save a folder of Jpg image files for your PSD files.  There is no need to flatten your work you can save a layered psd file as well as flat jpeg file for your layered documents.
Thumbnails are not displayed for PSD files unless you have installed some Program on you Mac or PC to generate Thumbnails for PSD files.

  • Open With Program I Want Grayed Out.

I am a Right Click iMac user and normally I right click on a media file that sits on the desk top I get a selection of what programs I can open the file with.
I like this becuase I don't always want to open it with the default program.  The problem is the program I want to open the file with (Open With...) does not pop up on the list so I have to select "Other". Then I get a much bigger list of which is the one I am looking for which is Grayed Out.
I can select "All Applications" and it does un-gray it for this one time, but I wish to add this program as a permanant one that appears on the list without having to select "Others".

    Hope this helps.

I presume you only want certain individual files to be opened by a particular program? e.g. You don't want all .MP4 audio files to open in iTunes for instance...
Seems when you right click on the file and choose "Open With..." "Other..." you select the program you want to open that file with and select the checkbox to "Always open with..."
That file (and only that file) will now be opened by the program you have selected.
Worked on my iMac running 10.6.8

  • Changing program to Open With

I want to open my media (avi, mpg) with VLC instead of quicktime. What do I have to do to make it so certain file types open with a certain program? Right clicking and clicking "Open With" only affects that particular file, but not that file type. Thanks!

Thanks. You'd think that this option would be found under "Open With"
Your advice worked, except that the icons still show Quicktime (but use VLC when double clicked). I closed and reopened finder, but it didn't refresh. Oh well. Thanks!

  • .msg files open in new tab or window, not with the default program

    Hello,
I am having an issue with .msg files not opening with the default program, Outlook. They are opening in a new tab and it is just a bunch of gibberish from the email header. Does anyone know how to force IE to open the .msg files in Outlook? They open fine
    in Chrome and Firefox.
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi,
First I suggest we take a try in IE with no-addons.
    Follow the steps below:
    1. Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Internet Explorer (with no add-ons)
    2. Press Shift, then right click Internet Explorer icon on taskbar, select run as administrator;
Please also take a verify that if the outlook is set to the default open program of .msg files:
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Default Programs, find the .msg file and take a look.
Then we may try to use process monitor to track the root cause of this issue:
    The download link here:
    Process monitor
    And here is
a blog talking about how to use it:

    Hope this may help

  • "Open with" or "choose default program ..." Context menu broken.

    Hi,
I have what appears to be a Context menu handler issue with my Windows 7 Home Premium - 64Bit.
I just discovered that if I right-click a file ( .txt , .avi , etc), and attempt to use "Open With", I do get a previously used list of programs to select from in the drop down list that appears. However, if I then select the "choose default program ..." dialog box, to find an alternative program to use, I keep ending up with the error message:
"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default programs control panel ."
I tried re-booting without success. Looked at system restore and (STUPIDLY), I only had 2 very recent restore points to go back to, (I've since increased the restore storage allowance for the drives). Restore doesn't take me back to a usable state for this issue.
The default file types doesn't seem to be the problem, as all my files do have default programs associated with them. I can even select one of the alternatives from the right-click pop-up option menu, and the file open appropriately. I can also open and use the Default Program application via Control Panel.
The error message comes up as soon as I click on "choose default program...", from the bottom of the pop-up menu. It's as though that dialog isn't associated with the "Open with'' application anymore.
When I can get to the "Open with" application through other means, ..... the "Always use...." is greyed out, so it becomes a permanent selection / rather than temporary. I know I can sort a work-around out to re-select a default program, in a round-about way, ... but I'd just love to sort whatever has gone wrong with the right click context menu.
Whilst browsing around, I came accross this (but for Windows XP):
Clicking the "Open With" or "Choose Program..." option always opens the file with Notepad?
Note the second suggested error message. It's almost exactly what I'm getting in Win 7.
XP: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel."
Win 7 (my error message): "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default programs controll panel."
Might I be on the right track, by any chance? Could this Registry key have become corrupted? Here's what I found...........
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Unknown\shell\openas\command
Then double clicked default, and here is the value data for (Default):
    %SystemRoot%\system32\rundll32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,OpenAs_RunDLL %1
If it's not this key, then I feel sure it's a Context menu handler that's become corrupted, for "Open with'' somewhere. I'm hoping someone might point me in the right direction. I'm reasonably confident in backing up / exporting and saving Registry keys - just not knowledgeable enough to know where to root around and know what should or shouldn't be there.
Apologies if this ends up in the wrong forum.
    Any help much appreciated thanks.

I have both Photoshop 4 and Photoshop 6 on my computer. When I am in Bridge and want to open an image by double clicking, it automatically opens in 6. I see, when I go to "open with" 6 is listed as "default" How can I change the default to open an image with a double click in 4?

You can associate files from the Bridge level and the Desktop level.
In Bridge CS4, go to Preferences > File Type Associations and change it to Photoshop CS4 for the file types you want.
If you want to open files from the Windows Desktop in CS4, these are the instructions:
Do this from the Windows Desktop:
If you want your image file to open in Photoshop and it doesn't, right click on it and choose
Open with > Choose default program… select Photoshop CS4 or CS6 and checkmark "always use the selected program to open this type of file".

  • Make x64 default with "open with" menu

Ive seen several threads to make x32 the default but not to many to make x64 the defualt. It appears that once the install is made I cannot only uninstall the 32 bit photoshop, only both at the same time. I have recently moved from cs4 to cs5. Everything was working perfectly until I decided that I had fully made the transition and uninstalled CS4. Now Im having trouble getting images to open with photoshop in x64 mode. .PSDs will open with the defualt x64 but I use a different viewer for .jepgs. I typicaly open these file types with the right click "open with" command. Unfortunately this command always opens the file in 32 bit mode. I have even tried to use "open with - choose default program" and navigate to the Photoshop X64 folder and select the 64 bit executable from there, but it still opens with 32 bit photoshop. All I want if to be able to use the "Open With" menu to open .jpegs in 64 bit mode. Any advice? Thanks.

Solved it using this guide only pointing to the x64 bit instead.
    http://forums.devshed.com/photoshop-help-88/file-association-opens-with-64-bit-photoshop-n ot-32t-724373.html
    Solved it!
In my desperation I just began searching the registry for "Photoshop.exe" - There it had the path for the "Photoshop" that you see when you try to change an association (picking the 32bit version using "open with" doesn't matter because it recognizes it as Photoshop and defaults back to whatever the program is in this registry key).
This should make Photoshop 32 bit open every time you open a Photoshop-associated file.
Here is what I did, for anyone coming from Google:
    Start > Run > regedit
    Browse to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\Photoshop.exe\shell\edit\command
Changed the value to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Photoshop.exe" "%1"
(old one was the 64 bit path and executable)
    Did the same with HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\Photoshop.exe\shell\open\command

Open With >> Choose Default Program >> Browse
    Navigate to:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Elements 11 Organizer\PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe"

In windows 7 I only get 'open with' in the context menu on single files. How do I enable 'open with' for a selection of files? Please tell me Windows 7 hasn't disabled this useful behaviour.

    Hi,
You can change the register key to realize the function.
For example, your mp3 player is windows media player, you can copy the following content (without quote) to the notepad and save it with the “.reg” extension.
    The context is below:
Warning: While this procedure might solve the issue or problem, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method.
