"Open with..." backed-up Applications?

When a Time Machine backup disk is attached, Mac OS identifies backed-up copies of applications in "Open with" lists. This is really annoying, is there anyway to get Mac OS to ignore these apps?
Cheers

Make sure that your backup drive is excluded from Spotlight. Also, run the following command in terminal:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

  • Reverting files to open with the original applications

I recently changed the default opening application for a few files that originally opened in Preview (certain JPGS) to open in Photoshop. I selected "use this application to open all documents like this". So of course, all JPGS now open in PS. I'm definitely not happy I did this, because now every time I pull a photo off a web page or take a screen shot (my default screen shot settings are JPGS), they will now open in Photoshop which is not what I want. I would like to have them open in Preview the way they used to. But, if I now select "use this application (Preview) to open all documents like this" for these files, all my Photoshop JPG documents will open with Preview. So, my question is, is there any way to revert things back to the way they used to be - screen shots and web photos automatically opening with Preview and all my Photoshop JPGS still opening in Photoshop?

where nnn is the uid number, as listed in the NetInfo database, of the affected account.
You can find the uid number for any account as follows:
    1. Launch NetInfo Manager, which is in the Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities folder.
    2. Select users in the middle column of the NetInfo Manager window.
    3. Select the desired user account in the right column of NetInfo Manager.
    4. The data for the selected user, including uid, is displayed in the lower pane of the NetInfo Manager window.

  • 'Open with' window displaying applications twice

When right clicking on an icon / file, either directly on the desktop or in finder, and selecting 'Open With' I am getting a lot of applications listed twice, directly on top of each other. For example
    Photoshop CS
    Photoshop CS
    Firefox
    Firefox
This seems to have started since I upgraded to Tiger.
It seems to be picking up those programs in my main application folder twice.
    Any ideas?

  • Open With Menu Lists Applications 5 times

So my open with menu seems to list applications more than once, for instance it reads
    audacity
    audacity
    audacity
    quicktime
    quicktime
    quicktime
    real player
    real player
    real player....
I am installing leopard tomorrow (migration assistant install). Will that fix the problem? I would rather fix it before, how could I do that?

Look at this post to see how to fix it. Better to do it before applying an update.

  • Finder Open With Lists Some Applications Twice

My finder>open with menu lists some applications twice.
A minor annoyance I'd like to fix.
Example: If I choose a JPG file and go to "open with" the following programs are listed twice: Firefox, QuickTime, RealPlayer & Safari. Some other programs are listed once.
There are NOT two versions of these programs on my computer, but there is the System folder from my old Mac.
Is there a way to fix this little problem?
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   17 inch

The mac finder will pick up applications anywhere on your hard drive when you do the "open with".
If you aren't using your old System Folder you could create a .zip archive of it and remove the original Folder.
I'd be open to hearing other approaches, but this will work.

  • Linux: downloaded files open with the wrong application

    I'm using Firefox 31.0 on Ubuntu 14.04.
I've downloaded a DJVU-file. The filetype association on my PC is to open it in evince. However, when I use the drop-down download menu in the toolbar, where the last downloads are listed, to open the DJVU file, it is opened with gedit. If I select "Show All Downloads" and double-click the downloaded DJVU in the window that opens up, then it is correctly opened in evince.
What happens here? Why does Firefox use gedit for the drop-down list but the correct application in the library window? How can I fix this?

    Thank you for your reply!
Well, this is not precisely what I wanted to do: my option in the Application settings is set to "Always ask", and this is what I would like Firefox to do. However, after the file is saved, I expect that it is opened with my system's default application for DJVU files, but Firefox just keeps opening it with the text editor (gedit) if I click on the file in the download drop-down menu in the toolbar.
Meanwhile, I have figured out how to fix it, however I find that this should work from the beginning without having to fix it.
The problem was that in the application settings there was no default application set for that file type, although my system specifies one (see first picture).
After I have selected "User other..." and set it to my preferred programme for DJVU files (evince), the menu has changed (see second picture). Now, even if I leave the option "Always ask" set, the correct application is used for opening that file type.
There are several questions which I am wondering about:
    1) Why is this not set to system's default application if the user has not manually specified anything else? I think using the text editor instead is not the best option.
    2) Why is the behavior in the downloads window (="Library") different from the drop-down menu? Even with the default programme not set in the applications preferences, clicking on the file in the downloads windows opens system's default programme.
I am not sure if this is the desired behavior, for me it seems slightly inconsistent.

  • [solved] pcmanfm 0.9.8 - "open with" dialog and applications sidebar

I'm running pcmanfm with fairly fresh reinstall of openbox and I'm still struggling to get my xdg/mimeinfo stuff straightened out.
I've installed both lxmenu-data and gnome-menus and when I right click on a file and select "open with" it is blank.  Nothing is listed.  Doing the same with Thunar works like expected.
Also, the "applications" menu/shortcut section of pcmanfm is curiously empty even after installing gvfs.
I'm trying to figure out if it's just a package that I'm missing because my previous install had it working fine.  (I habitually reinstall just to update my documentation...what can I say, I'm strange)
    Thanks!

    Great, thanks!
Before I try that though I'll likely dig around  a bit more.  I think it's related to some filetype / mime issues.
I just tried to open a .torrent file with
    mimeopen -d /path/to/file
and I got the error:  "No applications found for mimetype: application/x-bittorrent"
    damn.

  • How do I change the "Open with Windows Wordpad Application (default)" for a DOCX file to I guess, Microsoft Word?

I think the "Wordpad Application (default) got entered some time ago while trying to open a DOCX file. I now have a compatibility pack downloaded for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Formats for my Office 2003 and I think I could open a DOCX file now but can't get this Wordpad application removed and changed to another application to open it, which I think would probably be Word or if someone has another suggestion.

I can't get "Use Microsoft Word (default)" to appear as an Action option. Only Windows WordPad application, Media Center, Internet Explorer, iTunes, Media Player Classic, Nero, Windows Photo, Picasa, Windows Calendar and wWindow Media Player appear as choices. I don't know how to add Microsoft Word as a choice. Maybe the second part of the instructions in your reply "Adding download actions" would solve this but I don't understand the instruction starting with #1. I don't know how to go about doing what it says to do.
I don't think it makes any difference, but I do have Office XP instead of 03 as I stated in my first question.

  • Problem with files: open with applications

    Hi to all!
    I have this problem:
I have a little application in java and I make a button... when i press this button I wanna that the file named "example.pdf" will be opened with "pdf preferred application in OS" (for example in Windows xp , Acrobat 8)
    Can anyone help me?
    thanks!

Set your default apps the way you want them.
Navigate to ~/Library/Preferences/ and make sure the file com.apple.LaunchServices.plist is present and has a creation or modification date/time that matches the time when you set your last default application.
    Reboot.
Navigate back to ~/Library/Preferences/ and make sure com.apple.LaunchServices.plist is still there and does not have any permissions issues.

  • How To Remove A Specific Application Name From The "Open With" Dialog

When you right click on a file you are presented with the "Open With" menu item and you are also presented with a list of applications that could potentially be used to open that file.
In my case, when I click on a file of type .mov I am presented with the name of an application that I want to remove from the list, because that application ( Miro.app (2.5.2) ) no longer exists on my system.
What is the best way to remove that application name from the list?

Ok, but how does one remove some of the applications that are appear in the context menu for a given file type? Is there an asc file which can be edited?
For example, in my system a PDF can be opened with over 10 applications. I would like to see just the three ones I use: Acrobat, Skim and Preview.
    Thanks in advance.

  • How can I add an application in the "Open With..." menu?

Hi, I'd like some help here. I'm downloading citations that are plain text file, so when I open them I have to browse all the way to the Endnote folder to find the app, since Endnote is not in the short list of programs that Finder proposes for opening the text files. Is there a way to add Endnote to this list?
    Thanks.
    Merry Christmas!

In my limited knowledge there is no way for a user to add an application to this list. You might try one of these two options.
    1. Use a utility like Cocktail or Onyx to reset the launch services database. This is the database that decides which applications get launched when a file is double clicked. It may be that the Endnote application didn't get recognized. However OS X decides what applications to add to the list based on files types.
    2. The easier solution is to select one of the files you wish to open with Endnote. Right click on the file and select Get Info. Under the "Open with" menu select Other... and navigate to the Endnote application and select it. Now click the Change all button. From now on when you double click your citation file it will automatically open with the Endnote application.

  • "Open With" accidentally set for application installers.  How to reset?

Accidentally set "Open With" for an application installer to BBEdit and hit "change for all."
Now cannot launch installer, it wants to open with BBEdit or another application.
Is there a way to reset?

Solved. Problem was not actually with LaunchServices. I proved to myself that it was not LaunchServices by setting another filetype to open with BBEdit, then deleting LaunchServices, and seeing that filetype no longer open with BBEdit, while still having the problem. I should note that the problem was with a printer driver installer application, which I had set to open with BBEdit. (I was demonstrating to someone how you can set files to open with an application, not noticing I'd selected an installer applicaiton rather than a data-type file.) With no more LaunchServices.plist to delete, I still had the problem.
But here's what the problem ACTUALLY was: The installer had been posted to a Windows-based file server from a Mac using an AFP network protocol connection. I downloaded the file from the Windows-based server to another Mac using an SMB network protocol connection. As it happens, Resource Forks are encoded differently for SMB network connections than they are for AFP connections (and I am told for NFS or other protocols as well). So if you don't use the same network protocol connection to download the file as it was posted with, -you lose the Resource Fork. And in the case of this driver installer, the Resource Fork was critical, and so it could not launch correctly as I had downloaded it.
So I had thought the problem was related to "Open With..." -but it wasn't. As soon as I re-downloaded the app using an AFP network connection, it showed up correctly as an application with the correct icon, and launched normally.
    Problem Solved!

  • Updated to Indesign CC and Incopy CC = sluggish server for icap & idap trying to open with CS5.5

    1. The local editors (PC) cannot open the Incopy assignments from the server, like before. When they have tried this, they get font errors and/or extremely slow open. If the Incopy does open, it takes several minutes to make each change.
In order to bypass this, the designer has to package the Incopy assignment and email to them.
    2. The other side of the problem occurs when the editor emails back the package to the designer (Mac). Normally, we have been able to double click the package within the email and it opens into Indesign and updates. Now if we do this, the package tries to open with Indesign CS5.5. I placed my Incopy CS5.5 and Indesign CS5.5 into the trash, but it still tries to open with the old application.
In order to bypass this, the designer has to drag the .idap package to the desktop, attempt to open it, save the files to the computer because of an error message, replace the .icml file and then go back to the original indesign file and hope that it updates with the editors corrections. Another work around has been to drag the .idap package over the Indesign CC app.
Not a really efficient way to use this Indesign/Incopy workflow, I know. Perhaps I'm overlooking an easy solution. Please help.
    Thank you, in advance.

Simply try saving with the same name. It will effectively over-write your file as you want. The "[converted]" I find this to be a courtesy to let you know at a glance that you're working on an older version document. As far as the path issue, I can't answer that, as I use a third party program which, with a single keystroke, takes me to the original folder the files resides in. It's called Default Folder, and I've found it indispensable since 1999. Try it, you'll love it. It's from St. Claire Software.
    Cheers!

  • Always open with and Change all doesn't work

    Hello,
I'm having trouble changing what application should be used when opening movie files (.avi, .mkv etc).
I'm using mplayer (not the gui extended one), and I've made an .app that runs a script to open the chosen file in mplayer.
It works fine if I tell the individual file to always open with that specific application, but if I choose Get info so that I can use the "change all", and got my own app chosen, it just changes back to the default one.
I did a repair permissions on my disk, but nothing changes.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks

    Update:
I decided to make an app in Automator.
In automator I chose "Get Selected Finder Items" to get the file I'm trying to open.
After that I added a "Run Shell Script", set the pass input to as arguments. The command was
    /PATH/TO/YOUR/mplayer "$@"
Then save as application. Worked fine for me to set .avi to use it, and also use "change all".
So I guess the problem got solved. But it doesn't explain why my app made in the applescript editor couldn't have the "change all" clicked without changing to something else.

  • Finder Open With ...

I have Parallels installed and an XP VM. Parallels has decided that all .sql files should be opened with an MS application and starts the XP VM. If I explicitly change the Open With app in the More Info window it sticks but if I select the Change All option the default reverts back to the Parallels Open With. I have Default Apps in System Preferences and it indicates that my selection should be the default app for .sql files but when I create a new .sql file the Parallels default app is assigned. Is there and exit that Parallels might be using to override the Finder/Open default? Where would such an exit be identified to the system?

Right click one of these files and select Get Info.
In the Get Info window, find the Open With dropdown box and browse to the app you want to be the system default. Then, click the button just below that box that says Change All...
If that does not do it, then VM/XP is taking over the system.
