Open with, Canghe all fails

Hello,
I'm trying to change the default application to handle .pgn files.
The new default application is a compiled applescript droplet.
If for a specific file.pgn change the application to open with, then doubleclicking the file opens with the new app.
However, if I hit the change all button to modify the default app for ll .pgn files, it does not work. The open with apps defaults back to empty and nothing is changed.
Any idea?
Tried also a couple of the preference panes addon to handle file associations, but they seem broken in Leopard...

An excellent commentary which will answer the un-asked question for many.
I still think that iTunes for many including myself has considerable appeal. As an Australian obtaining the US Tax File Number is a bit of a hurdle which comes at a not insignificant cost and that is simply to get the proof of identify documents properly notarised.
I am not sure why Apple what you to jump this hurdle given that Blurb have no such requirement for non-USA citizens to publish in their Bookstore.
In Australia our law dictates that if you are a publisher then the book is deemed to have been published in the State in which you are domicile [permaned place of residence]. In that case as a publisher I am regulated by the State of Victoria and the Australian Federal Government.
ecommerce certainly throws up some interenst issues. Ant..

  • "Open With"- "Change All" corrupts your file (Resource forks, extended attributes, creation date)

I finally know why some of my files get corrupted.
    If you use the following method to assign one kind of file to always open with the same application;
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8387.html
(File -> Get Info -> Open With -> Change All)
an extended attribute will be added to your file.
You can examine that by typing "ls -l" in Terminal. If you see an @-sign after permissions than you have an extended attribute in that file.
To see what it contains, type "xattr -l filname.jpg" in Terminal.
Besides that is adds an extended attribute (which can be deleted with the "xattr --help" command) the modification date of the selected file will be changed.
I think this is irritating because I wan't to keep my master photos with the same modification date as creation date.
What else does it effect besides the modification date and to add extended attributes? Does my metadata get intact?
(If you further want to make a backup copy on for example a FAT32 filesystem than your got a new problem. FAT32 doesn't support resource forks, so besides filename.jpg you will have an additional ._filename.jpg of 4kb)

Doesn't sound like there is any corruption going on to me. It may change the date modified, but that should be expected since you modified the file.

  • Open With Change All doesn't work

Change All... under Open with: in the Get Info dialog doesn't always work. If I select a .pl file and then use this method to ask OS X Mountain Lion to open all .pl files with (the default) TextEdit.app, then in the future only that same file is opened with TextEdit. Other .pl files, even if in the same directory, are opened with whatever other application they were previously set to be opened with. This contradicts the claim that "This change will apply to all documents with extension “.pl”."
Is this just a bug, or might I be doing something wrong?

This free program will solve your problem, it's a System Preference Pane actually.
Wonderful program for fixing all file association issues in one location.

  • Open with & Change All revert back to Preview. Can't set Photoshop instead.

To help with analysis of this issue, my system is a G4 PowerMac running OS X Tiger 10.4.11. This issue also involves Photoshop 6.0.1 running in Classic mode.
For my Photoshop files, the default application is no longer set as Photoshop, but instead as Preview. I would like to reset Photoshop as the default application for all files ending with the ".psd" extension. When I right-click (or control-click) on a file ending in a ".psd" extension, select "Get Info", then under "Open with" choose Photoshop, and finally click the "Change All" button, the "Open with" setting reverts back to Preview. I am able to change one file at a time, by selecting Photoshop under "Open with" and by then avoiding clicking on "Change All". Regrettably, it is not feasible to change the settings for every single ".psd" file on the computer in this one-by-one manner.
Does anyone know how to change the default application globally for all ".psd" files to Photoshop, using the command line? I have searched for information on the Internet about the "defaults" command line utility, but have been unable to find an answer in that regard.
Does anyone know of an alternative means by which to resolve this issue?
Thank you for your time and help.
    -John

Thank you for the suggestion, BDAqua. Regrettably, the problem continues to persist. The command at that link did indeed do something because the choices for "Open with" were different. Also, after running the command, Photoshop was not among the default choices, although it could be found after clicking on "Other". This might be shedding light on something. The copy of Photoshop is on a secondary hard drive in order to save space on the main hard drive. Maybe if Photoshop is on the main drive and then the command from the linked page is run, that might solve the issue.
After the opportunity to test that, I plan to post a follow-up message. I must confess that it might be a few days before that happens.
Thank you again for you help, BDAqua.

  • Open With - Change All; Not maintained and lost after restart; Help!

I'm loosing my open this file with this application default settings. I've been experiencing it with PDF files and preview app. The finder will default back to preview after I continually reset all PDF files to open with Acrobat.
Oddly this is also happening with Entourage. Frequently between restarts the finder asks if I want to make Entourage my default email app.
Why is the system loosing the default settings so frequently?

    Try rebuilding the launchservices database:
    Rebuild LaunchServices Database
    For Tiger users
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste in the following command in its entirety:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServic es.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
    Press RETURN.
    For Leopard users
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste in the following command in its entirety:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
    Press RETURN.
You will get prompts about using applications for the first time but that's normal after the rebuild.
As for the default mail program you should open Mail, select Preferences from the Mail menu. Click on the General icon in the toolbar, then set the Default Mail drop down menu to the mail program you want as the default - in your case Entourage.

  • Open with Change All, have to reboot to see icon changes?

If I have a bunch of jpegs on my desktop, all have preview icons and all open with preview. I 'get info' on one of them and change it to open with Fireworks and also select 'change all' so all documents like this open with Fireworks.
After doing so, the icon of the file I clicked changes to a fireworks icon, but why do all the other jpegs not change icon at the same time? they remain as preview icons, even though they all open in fireworks.
I have to reboot in order to see them all as fireworks icons.

Try this (you can undo it)
    1. make a folder on your desktop
    2. Go to username/Library/Preference folder
    3. select all the preferences that begin with "com.apple...plist"
    4. Hold down the "apple" key, and deselcet the on that says com.apple.Dock.plist" (no one wants to reconstruct their Dock).
    5. Drag the remaining highlighted item to that folder on your desktop
    6. Restart, or log out.
    See if it recurs.

  • How to set a default open with, for all files

I would simply like to make all my .avi files to open with VLC, rather than Quicktime. I have done the "change default open with", but it's only for that file.
Any way to make all avi's open with VLC?
    Thanks!

Right-click any .AVI file and select Get Info. Under the "Open with" section, select the app you want, and then press the "Change All" button.

  • Change Open With for all files with a specific extension

Hi, I've been using OS X for quite some time, but more recently cannot see how you do the following which is proving frustrating:
    * Open Get Info for a file,
    * Use the drop down under Open With to choose Other,
    * Select an appropriate application that wasn't on the drop down list (in this case Smultron text editor for CSV files),
    * Press the Change All button and the drop down turns back to Excel which was the previous default.
So basically, how do I change all files with CSV extension to Smultron when Smultron wasn't in the list of Open With items and I have to use Other from the list. This is repeatable for any file type with any application that isn't listed and is on both my iMac and my work's MacBook. Try it yourself and you'll see what I mean!!
    Thanks

    Thanks NeroWolf,
Your solution does work for that single file, but doesn't change the system wide association of that file extension with a particular application. It is because this works that I believe the problem I am having is uncircumventable and is in fact a bug in the OS. Could anyone else confirm this?
    Cheers,
    Stuart
It might be a bug. What I found is that the icon does not change unless I log out/in or reboot, even when the app normally puts an icon on the file.
For example if I change an audio file to always open with VLC, it does even though the icon remains as before. However, even though clicking plays the audio with VLC, if I right click the file and select "Open With" it still says iTunes (app) default which is incorrect.

  • "Open With" menu all messed up after CS4 install.

I've got at completely fresh install of 10.5.6, and another person I know is having this same issue. In the "Open With" display in the Finder using a contextual menu, Photoshop is show a long, cryptic name. Specifically, it says:
    i Adobe Photoshop CS4 (11.0 (11.0x20080919 [20080919.r488 2008/09/19/19:02:00:00 cutoff; r branch]))
How do I make it just say "Adobe Photoshop CS4"?
    Thanks

Well, I certainly didn't apply any strings or haxies whichever they might have been. and then forgot about them, no, no such thing. On principle I don't mess with either the system or the applications.
I am on an Intel iMac with 10.4.6 at home, åainfully little rAM, but that works anyways, have an Intel MacBook alu for work (previously not so long ago a black Intel Mac Book), with max RAM possible.
Our users (Scandinavia's largest daily newspaper) have either Intel MacBooks or MacBook Pros with either Leopard or Tiger, our editors have G5s with Tiger (and since last week some of them now run Intel iMacs with Leopard).
I have personally never seen the problem described or got any reports of it either (we have several hundred of users). Our users do not yet run cs4, but all our editors do their own image-works and use Photoshop daily, CS2 or CS3. Our photographers run Cs3 on Intel MBs or MBPs in either Tiger or Leopard.
When I installed PSCS4 (premium design suite) I had both CS2 and CS3 already on my personal machines. Since I've gotten rid of CS2. My personal machines have on their main systems never seen any betas, personal or other, or run any trial versions (anything like that has been run isolated in other systems). I've run Leopard since the day it was released and all updates released afterwards. I never run DiskWarrior (don't own it), but I have meticulous control over my fonts (nowadays not using any font managers; FontBook is there obviously but I only use that for info about fonts not for activating), but used to use Suitcase for years previously, without any problems.
And I have never seen the problem described. Not in CS4 and not in previous versions. So I think something else, whatever it might be, might be influencing on it and causing it. Fonts? Non-compatible plug-ins? System-haxies? Not saving files locally but over the network? Not having the correct settings for saving the file? Hard to say. File being messed with between different versions of the applications and different applications? Could be anything.
What would be nice to have would be a file-history function like the one in InDesign where you can see what versions and stages the file has passed through and where it originated version-wise. But PS doesn't have that.

  • Open with - modify all

    Hi everybody,
my system try to open my .pages files with Image Capture (Acquisizione Immagini in Italian), so I try with
cmd+i -> open with (selecting "pages") -> modify all...
Now, after I click on "modify all", in the icon-program_name return "Image Capture".
This happens only when I try to use "modify all", if I don't click on it, the file will be opened always with pages.
The problem is that every files, that I create with pages, have this problem and I want to open the .pages files with pages automatically.

I guess that a database used internally to link types of files to applications is corrupted.
It would be a good idea to run a maintenance tool like the free Onyx to rebuild *_launchServices databases_*

  • Palm Desktop software - Fails to open with msg "Error: Failed to open Address Book database"

In July 2009 I dropped my trusty Visor on a tile floor and it stopped working.  So, in the meantime I have been using only the Palm Desktop software.
Just yesterday, when I attempted to launch the Palm Desktop software, it failed with the message “Error: Failed to open Address Book database”.  I think this error was caused by a very ungraceful shut-down of my Win XP system yesterday.
I really do need to use the Palm Desktop software for my address list, calendar, and memo.  The problem is that the error with the Address Book database seems to be preventing the Palm Desktop software from initializing.
I am using Palm Desktop 4.0.1 on Windows XP SP3.  I do NOT  have an export file of the Palm address book or other databases.  However, I do have five levels of backup history on my external Maxgor backup drive.
Specifically, on my current c drive I have files in the directory:
    C:\Program Files\Handspring\WR\address
address.bak                  5/16/2009   (from last sync before I broke Visor)
                address.dat                   5/24/2011
                Personal.ABA                11/6/2008
                Unfiled.ABA                   3/28/2008
On my most recent backup of my system, there are the following files:
address.bak                 5/16/2009   (from last sync before I broke Visor)
                            address.dat                  5/12/2011
                            Personal.ABA              11/6/2008
                            Unfiled.ABA                  3/28/2008
I have not listed the four older backup versions.
I haven’t tried any corrective measures yet (I don’t want to make matters worse) and am hoping that someone can guide me along the right path.
Is it possible for me to just rename the “current” address.dat file to something like address.SAV and then copy the Address.dat file file with date of 5/12/2011 into the current directory.  Will the software then just use the older version of the data, or must I do something else.
I am grateful for any assistance.  Thank you very much.

Thanks for the speedy response.  However, I read the article for which you provided the link, and I hve also read many other articles that I found via search, but I don't think these will help me.  All of these articles seem to assume that (1) you have a handheld to which you can sync and thereby rebuild the database on the PC, or (2) you have a backup that you created via the Palm Desktop export function.  Unfortunately, I have neither and so I don't think any of these solutions will work for me.
I did read with great interest an article that stated that recent versions of Palm Desktop have a built-in function that will repair a corrupted Datebook database.  Will this also fix a corrupted Address Book database which is my problem?
So, I downloaded and attempted to install the latest version of Palm Desktop.  I was careful to read the instructions that stated NOT to uninstall my current version of Palm Desktop, but to just install the latest version on top of my current Palm Desktop.  However, when I attempted to do the installation, the installer software said it could not install on top of my current software and that I should first uninstall my current software.
    I have some questions now:
    (1) If I uninstall my current version of Palm Desktop, will this destroy my Address Book, Datebook, and Memo databases ( I don't care about the ToDo database)?  If so, what can I do to preserve those databases?
    (2) Is there really a function built in the recent versions of Palm Desktop that will fix a corrupted database?  Is this an "automatic" function that will detect and fix a broken database or is this something I will have to invoke?
    Thanks for your help.

In July 2009 I dropped my trusty Visor on a tile floor and it stopped working.  So, in the meantime I have been using only the Palm Desktop software.
Just a couple days ago, when I attempted to launch the Palm Desktop software, it failed with the message “Error: Failed to open To Do List database”.  I think this error may have been caused by a very ungraceful shut-down of my Win XP system the day before.
I really don’t care about the To Do List data since I really don’t use it --- in fact, I haven’t used it in many months.  However, I really do need to use the Palm Desktop software for my contacts, calendar, and memo.  The problem is that the error with the To Do List database seems to be preventing the Palm Desktop software from initializing.
Just guessing, I saved the todo.dat and todo.bak files by renaming them, and then renamed the todo.bak file to todo.dat.  Then I attempted to launch the Palm Desktop application, but it failed with the same error “Error: Failed to open To Do List database”.
I also tried renaming all of the todo files so that none had a name of todo.dat or todo.bak.  The result is that the Palm Desktop software still will not start up.
I think I am using Palm Desktop 4.0.1, at least that is what the help text file seems to tell me.
I am grateful for any assistance.  Thank you.

Your on the correct path by saving the data by renaming the files. But to resolve this error we need to remove the data all together. Since you no longer need this data if you just delete it then it should not matter. If Palm Desktop is giving this error but will not open I doubt that the data can be recovered in any event.

  • OPEN WITH -- Not all EPS are the same

Here's the situation. At one point I must've purposely -- although I don't know why now -- assigned all EPS files to open in Illustrator. Now, this wouldn't be a problem accept for the fact that I also use Photoshop EPS files. I read somewhere on the forums that I should trash the LaunchServices Cache and Prefs, but that didn't seem to help. Any other ideas or suggestions.
    Thanks much!

After doing a little more research, including more searching here as well as in google, I found a few people discussing this thread here in the Forums. It helped and I am happy that all is right again with my little computer.

  • Opens with volume all the way down

WHenever iTunes opens under my profile, whether it is a computer restart, log out/log in, or program (iTunes) restart, I always receive the warning that 'The iTunes volume is turned all the way down. To change the volume drag the slider at the top of the iTunes window" I am able to check the 'Do not warn me again' option, but I don't because I want to know why the volume is turned all the way down in the first place.

Here's the answer supplied by Johnny Hands.  He's referring to the AirPlay control located next to the volume slider.  Make sure your computer volume is turned up or the check mark is disabled on the Multiple tab.

  • Open with [Pages4.3] for ALL Pages docs not working

    Hi there,
I am unable to set the default application for all PAGES document to open in a lesser version (Pages version 4.3) to that of Pages version 5.1 which came pre-installed on my machine.
The reason why I want Pages 4.3 opening on default instead of Pages 5 is because Pages 4.3 contains the features version 5 no longer has. I also wish to retain Pages 5 to open historical documents.
I am running OS10.9.5 with Pages version 5.1 (1769) as standard with the machine when I bought it. I copied to my machine the application Pages 4.3. It runs, I have no problem opening both copies of Pages.
I now want all my Pages documents to open in v4.3 as default (not v5). This is where I fall over.
    1. I "Get info" on a Pages document,
    2. In the "Open with" panel I select Pages 4.3 from the dropdown menu. Upon changing the application the "Change All" button is becomes active.
    3. I click on "Change All" button and confirmation message appears (see image). I click "Continue" and the confirmation message disappears.
    4. ISSUE - The default application reverts back to "Pages" (see image) which is the same selection as when I started (step 1)
(Note: I also selected "Other" from the dropdown menu and selected Pages 4.3 from the applications folder through the dialogue window, but without joy)
    5. When I double-click the selected document (the document I selected in step 1) it opens in Pages 4.3. However, when I double-click any other Pages document it opens in Pages5, not Pages4.3.
I might add, others in my office, with varying OS (10.10, and 10.7) and Pages 5.5.2 have not had the same issue as I have. They followed the same process as above and in Step4, their selection of Pages4.3 remained as the dropdown value, not "Pages".
I would be grateful to hear from those who have had similar issue and overcome it. Many thanks

    Hi stutteringfish,
was hoping for something more definitive... something more like what the feature "open with [for all]" is designed to do.
I am afraid not. That setting does not stick with Pages 5 (or Numbers 3).
My solution is to keep icons for the old and new versions on my Dock. Then I can launch whichever and Menu > File > Open (or Open Recent) from within the appropriate version..
Wayne Contello has written a User Tip for working with the old and new versions of iWork.
Need newer version of Numbers to open file
    Regards,
    Ian.
