Open With Duplicates

Hi,
I am hoping someone can help me with this:
When I Control click on a file so I can use the "open with" so I can pick an application to open the file with. I get a long list that contains some of the same applications listed several times in a row on the list. For example Preview and Photoshop are there 5 or 6 times.
Why is this?
How do I get the list so it only lists each application once.
Maybe it is supposed to be this way, I just prefer that it was a little more tidy and saved me from all the hunting and scrolling. There is only a need to have each app listed once.
Thanks,
Paul

Open the Terminal app (Utilities folder) and at the prompt paste in the following in its entirety then press return. When the command has completed the prompt will return. Quit Terminal. Problem is fixed.
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/L aunchServices.framework/Versions/Current/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain system -domain local -domain user

  • "open with" duplicate entries

"at times" using "open with" shows many duplicate entries....reboot fixes it for a while..
I'm still trying to determine what is triggering this.
Any idea? Anyone see this in 10.8? I couldn't find anything searching the forums.

I am not familiar with all the causes of this phenomenon, but it happens to me from time to time, and I know why it is for me. I work with "clone" images all the time with dev work. When a clone is mounted alongside booting into  the main volume, Launch Services, which keeps track of applications used to open certain file types, "sees" the other application files on the mounted clone volume, and adds them to the database, resulting in the apparent duplication of "open with" entries.
Resetting the 'Open With' menu will remove duplicates and ghost applications (ones you have deleted) from the list. You reset the 'Open With' menu by rebuilding the Launch Services database your Mac maintains. There are multiple ways to rebuild the Launch Services database, including third-party system utilities like Cocktail and Onyx.
If you don't own a system utility that can rebuild the Launch Services database, don't worry; you can perform the rebuild yourself using Terminal.
Using Terminal to Rebuild the Launch Services Database:
Launch Terminal, located at /Applications/ Utilities/.
For OS X 10.5.x and later, enter the following at the Terminal prompt:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.fram ework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
I don't know wjhy it is happening for you, but rebuilding the database will at least reset things to normal. The question to ask is whether you have other mounted volumes, say from other systems on your network, that contain Mac Apps.
I have also found a way to keep it from happening (in certain cases, for my dev work). When I create a clone, I also create what is called a "fstab" file entry, in the fstab file. This entry prevents named drives from auto-mounting. So, if I boot to a clone, my main volume on my internal SSD won't mount. Hence, no extraneous Launch Services database entries will created on the clone drive. If however, I boot to my main SSD, and then mount a clone, I don't use any fstab entries on the main SSD. This just means I have to periodically rebuild the Launch Services database. It is way too much trouble keeping fstab entries for all my clone drives on my main SSD. I only use the fstab method on the clones themselves.

  • Open With Duplicate , again.

    dear all,
i downloaded paintbrush twice. i thought i had uninstalled or deleted the first download (threw it into trash after quitting the programme) but apparently not. i think this is what resulted in the duplicate "open with" option. i'm quite sure that this is the cause because only one "paintbrush" works while the other when i click to open with, it doesnt.
the problem is, i cant find anything related to this first download that might result in it showing up. terminal commands to locate the launch service didnt work (locate lsregister didnt work in the first place. odd) i didnt try the sudo command though, because of the warning that it might create in loss of system files.
is it possible to find out where are the other package contents of the first download? should i uninstall and reinstall paintbrush? how do i know if the uninstall process has been a complete one?

Reset the LaunchServices database with this one-liner:
*/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchS ervices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user*
As for the Terminal command locate not doing what you expect, see my post at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11383558&#11383558

  • Mavericks "open with" duplicate entries

Hi guys~ I updated to Mavericks just a few days and I'm enperiencing the same duplicate-entries problem (multiple MPlayerXs) in "open with" as that on previous OS X versions. Unfortunately the Termial method didn't work this time as "No such directory exists" poped up in Termial when I tried. Can you help me?

  • Duplicates entries in "open with" menu AGAIN....

    Hey guys
I have an issue with the Open With Crtl + click menu, i get duplicates of the programs that can be used to open the file, i konw that this problem was there since tiger and leopard, but now with SL i'm dissapointed of this issue AGAIN. I hope Apple its aware of this forum and resolves this problem with an update soon
If anyone knows a practical solution, please post it
    Thanks and greetings from Mexico

Hi again: OK, I am not really losing my mind, honest. Right clicking on a PDF file on the desktop and selecting "Open With" gave me not Duplicates, but Quadruplicates of each choice. I then selected the same PDF file and clicked "File" from the menu bar and then "Open With" and all was good, only one of each choice. I then go back to the "Right Click" method, all back to normal, one of each. Strange indeed.

  • Duplicate Items in Open With Menu

Whenever I right / command click to get the 'open with' dialog the list has duplicates of most applications in the list. This happened after I upgraded to Leopard. Any ideas how to fix it?

There are several possible reasons this happens.
One is that you have different versions of the apps on your drive, or that you have other drives mounted, each with a copy of the apps. Each instance you see of an app is actually a different one, & thus you have a choice of which one to launch.
Another is that the launch services database is corrupted & needs to be rebuilt. Several third party utilities make this easy to do without resorting to the command line. If you use one for this purpose, make sure it has been updated for Leopard compatibility. Two such utilities are Cocktail (shareware) & Onyx (freeware).

  • Duplicate apps in the "Open with-" menu

Hi, I have this small and annoying problem... Randomly, some programs seem to duplicate themselves in my "Open with..." menu.
For example, if I try to open a JPEG, Firefox will show this behavior. Any idea?

Do you have another copy of Firefox floating around on a mounted volume or in the Downloads folder?
I don't think it is Launch Services database problem since all apps are not duplicated.

  • Duplicate Entries on "Open With" Menu.

The subject pretty much explains the problem.
I haven't made any major changes to my system, but I recently noticed that when I right click (2 button mouse) on something and go to the Open With menu, I now have duplicate entries.
    IE: Adobe Image Ready
    Adobe Image Ready
    Adobe Photoshop
    Adobe Photoshop
I think you get the point.
This seems to only be when I do this to images.
    Any Ideas.
    Thanks

That's handled by LaunchServices and sounds like a corrupt database. See http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/resetlaunchservices.html and

  • "Open With" Menu Listing Duplicates

When I right click on a file to Choose  program to Open With some Programs are duplicated. Is there a way to clear up the duplicates?
I found in an older discussion that I should open terminal and run the following command.
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/L aunchServices.framework/Versions/Current/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain system -domain local -domain user
However all I get is the following error
    No such file or directory
    Any Suggestions?

    Tried that and get this....
    lsregister: [OPTIONS] [ <path>... ]
                          [ -apps <domain>[,domain]... ]
                          [ -libs <domain>[,domain]... ]
                          [ -all  <domain>[,domain]... ]
Paths are searched for applications to register with the Launch Service database.
Valid domains are "system", "local", "network" and "user". Domains can also
be specified using only the first letter.
-kill     Reset the Launch Services database before doing anything else
-seed     If database isn't seeded, scan default locations for applications and libraries to register
-lint     Print information about plist errors while registering bundles
-convert  Register apps found in older LS database files
-lazy n   Sleep for n seconds before registering/scanning
-r        Recursive directory scan, do not recurse into packages or invisible directories
-R        Recursive directory scan, descending into packages and invisible directories
-f        force-update registration even if mod date is unchanged
      -u        unregister instead of register

  • Open with menu duplicates. osx 10.8.1

It shows duplicates of VLC in the open with menu when I go to open a movie file. I am running osx mountain lion 10.8.1. How do I remove duplicates or fix the open with menu?

If you are nervous about using Terminal forcommand  a you may understand,  not I concur with Bjorn. It is a means of resetting the menu.

  • Duplicate programs listed in "Open With" menu

Whenever I control-click a file and want to select "Open With", there are duplicate programs listed. For example, if I want to open an AIFF file, QuickTime 7.6.2 shows up twice in the list along with iTunes, WaveBurner (a Logic Pro program) and other programs all showing up twice. Even another version of QuickTime (6.0.3) is listed.
Anyone else have ing this problem? Anyone know how to fix it? Thanks

    Hi, this should cure it...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then...

  • Duplicate Applications in "Open With" List

Okay so heres the issue, if I right click on a file and go to the "open with" flyout in many cases there's duplicates of apps sometimes it mentions a different version number other times not. I was just curious as to what might be causing this and how I can fix it... it's a real pain in the butt to have a long list featuring 4 photoshops (among others)

    Hi
You need to reset your Launch Services database. Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder, and type (or copy and paste from this command for accuracy):
    /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -all local,system,user

  • Duplicate entries under "Open With..." menu?

I recently exchanged my troubled iMac for a new one and migrated the User Accounts during the inital setup. Now that I've installed all of my old apps, the "Open With" contextual menu item shows duplicates of some (not all) of the available apps. For example, right-clicking on a JPG file shows the following:
    Camino
    ColorSync Utility
    ColorSync Utility
    DivX Player
    Preview
    Quicktime Player
    Quicktime Player
    Safari
    Safari
This is also happening only on my user account, none of the others on the same machine.
How do I fix this problem?

Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. Paste the following command line in its entirety immediately after the cursor then press return:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/L aunchServices.framework/Versions/Current/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain system -domain local -domain user

  • Duplicate programs in "Open With" menu

How can I clean up the menu that shows when I right click and choose "Open With". I have duplicate programs (for example VLC shows twice). Any way to fix this?

Try rebuilding your launch services database.
    run the following terminal command
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

  • Duplicate application icons when I right click "open with" ??

When I right click on an file and use "open with" command I get duplicate application icons in my finder window. Anyone know why? Solution?
    Thanks Ed

Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and paste the following command in its entirety immediately after the Terminal prompt:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/L aunchServices.framework/Versions/Current/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain system -domain local -domain user
Now press RETURN. Your finished when the prompt returns.
Duplicates may still appear if you have different versions of the same program installed and if you have the software installed on multiple drives.
