'Open With' gone kind of crazy...

This is kind of a strange one...
I often do a 'control-click' when opening jpegs. I often want to open them in photoshop instead of preview if I want to mess around with the image.
Here's what's going on. It lists all the usual suspects (photoshop, preview, quicktime, etc), but also lists about 30 other options that I've never seen. They're mostly .exe options and the ones I've tried will open Adobe ImageReady and perform some alteration to the jpeg. Does anybody know if I can get these out of my 'Open With' list of options? Can I adjust this?
Any input would be great. Thanks in advance...

Hey BW --
Wish I had something to offer here, but I don't.
When did a "get info" on a jpeg to see what you're talking about, I could only find a way to add applications to the list of "recommended applications." Editing the list by deleting an app wasn't possible. And, while I don't have the situation you describe (as I don't have Photoshop), I did find duplicates of Graphic Converter, Netscape and Real Player in the list.
I don't know why the duplicates are there and I can't see any way to get rid of them. I looked throughout the support site and Mac Help and couldn't find anything on this, and my searches in Discussion turned up too much irrelevant stuff to make them effective.

Numbers does not open with the main user after installing mountain lion. It works flawlessly when I use the second account on my mac. What got corrupted in the admin-account, something in the user-library? How can I fix it? I´m kinda desperate... (the same happens with the other iWork-Apps!)
Looking forward to hearing from somebody with a littlemore expertise than me, Chris

you can remove preferences files by navigating to the Preferences folder for your user as follows:
    0) Quit ALL iWork apps (Keynote, Pages and Numbers)
    1) from the Finder select the menu item "Go > Go To Folder…".  This will bring up a dialog:
    2) enter the path "~/Library/Preferences" (no double quotes)
    3) find the files:
    com.apple.iWork.Keynote.plist
    com.apple.iWork.Numbers.plist
    com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist
and move these to the trash.  I would NOT empty until later.
    4) restart Numbers

  • Open with camera raw is gone, any ideas?

Open with camera raw is gone, any ideas thanks?

    AND FROM THE FINDER:
Kevin, you keep trying to open files in ACR using the right mouse click menu in Finder and it will never show up. Use Bridge, select the file in the content window and then use right mouse click on a supported file.
Supported are Raw files according to the list provided on this page:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
And jpeg and tiff if you have set the camera raw preferences to handling jpeg and tiff files.
But this works only in Bridge because ACR is a plug in that opens in PS and Bridge. If you choose to the Open With Route you always open ACR in Bridge.
Setting jpeg and tiff to 'open automatically with settings' means that if you have previous applied ACR settings (the icon for it shows top right of the thumb) you are able to double click or use open to open the files in ACR using PS.
Setting the prefs to open jpeg and tiff always in ACR means you can use the same options for opening Raw files, but this is not recommended because opening a simple jpeg file in mail or whatever also opens the file first in ACR instead of PS.

  • After installing Photoshop CC 2014 all "Open With" references are gone?

    Hi!
I installed Photoshop CC 2014 and uninstalled Photoshop CC.
I also check the Bridge -> Preferences -> File association settings: There is always "Photoshop" mentioned. So far it looks fine.
So no NEF or PSD file are linked to Photoshop CC 2014. Neither it is displayed in the "Open With" dialog. But Photoshop CC 2014 should be displayed there.
I would like to add any screenshots here, but the add image dialog showns me only an empty dialog :-(
    So please fix that issue.
Actually, I've to open the file by starting Photoshop and navigate to the files all the time. That is really annoying.
    Regards

    No one?
I would really need help about this.
I can't believe that no one had this problem.
    Thank you

  • "Open with Preview" gone?

In Safari I was previously able to right-click on a .pdf page and get the option to open the document with Preview.  I used this frequently to print a few pages of a lengthy .pdf since I could see exactly what pages to print rather than guessing at the correlation of the document's page numbers to those viewed in Safari.  At some point over the summer this feature went missing -- I believe after upgrading to Safari 5.1 or to SL 6.6.8.  Was this feature removed, or is it just me?  Thanks!
Edit -- sorry, nevermind.  I do have the Open with Preview.app feature, however it had not been shown as available in the .pdf files I have been viewing since they apparently have some sort of password protection.

Works for me. Please enable guest logins and log in as Guest. Launch Safari and test. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and disable it if you wish.

  • Is there a way to disable files opening with one-click?

This is driving me crazy! I thought previously the problem was "magic mouse" but now that I've gone back to my old mouse, the problem persists. If I select a file in a finder window, it opens with one click. Also, if I try to edit a file name or even the question I've written above, I can't just insert the cursor and replace 1 letter. It picks the whole word, then the whole sentence. I never had this trouble before updating to the lastest and "greatest" snow leopard.

Are you using a wired mouse, if you are then go to sys prefs/mouse and change the double click speed.

  • Finder "Open With..." Menus Seeing Time Machine Backup Volumes

The "Open With..." context menu that is available if you right-click a file in the Finder has gone crazy on my Mac. The list is about a mile long and includes literally dozens of versions of each app.
One clue is that a similar "Open Page With..." menu that is available under Safari's Debug menu includes paths, and each redundant version of the applications that appear there are all located in the Time Machine backup volume.
It's hard to imagine that Time Machine doesn't auto-configure this, but my question to the group is if there's a way to make the Finder (and Safari) ignore the Time Machine backup database? Clearly, I would never, ever want to open a file with an app located in the Time Machine database.
    Thanks,
    Steve

I have excluded my external USB drive where Time Machine backups reside, and I still get a context menu full of backed up applications.
It's not just plain wrong, it makes the context menu very slow.
MacOS must look for this information elsewhere.

  • How to revert to having Excel docs open with Excel 2004

I recently purchased and installed Office 2008 for the Mac on my MacBook Pro. I have one HUGE problem with Excel 2008 in that if you have a reasonably sized spreadsheet, 700 lines long by about 10 columns wide and have a chart of some of the data showing on the active (visible) screen, then entering any more data slows to a crawl that is unbelievable... It is unusable... I still have Office 2004 installed. I went to the Excel file in the finder, did a "get info", went into the "open with", changed that back to Excel 2004 and closed the get info window... I then double clicked the file and it opened with Excel 2004, what I wanted... However, the next time I save the workbook file (and I have to do that as I add data to it daily), it immediately reverts back to wanting to be opened with Excel 2008... I also tried clicking the "change all" in the get info window and that doesn't work at all.. If I select Excel 2004 and then click "change all", the very next time I try to open it (whether I have saved or not) it opens with Excel 2008... So that is even worse... I do notice when I click on the "open with" there is the word "default" next to Excel 2008... So is there some way, short of removing Excel 2008 from the computer, which I might have to do, to truly change this "open with" deal such that it will ALWAYS open with Excel 2004??? I'm bummed by a number of features in the new Excel but the forever spinning beach ball when a chart is on the active page is truly a killer... So in summary, short of removing Excel 2008, how do I again make Excel 2004 truly the default app for opening .xls spreadsheets???? thanks much... bob..

Hi... You are correct about the xls versus the xlsx... However, what I've observed is that Excel 2008 is more than happy to open an older .xls file, work on it and then save it, still keeping the .xls extension... But now, after having saved it, even though its extension is still .xls, now it is full of whatever overhead they have put into Excel 2008 that is intolerable... Since I posted earlier, I did some reading and downloaded a preference pane program called "RCDefaultApp-2.0.1.X"... It claims to be good at fixing problems just like what I am describing... But not matter what I do in that little app, if I select Excel 2004 to be the app that opens .xls files, I click that choice and it instantly reverts right back to Excel 2008 before I even leave that window... Bottom line is Excel 2008 has taken control at some level deeper than what that utility can do anything about... Again, I can set the "open with" to Excel 2004 and that works but ONLY until I save the file again... The moment I save it, Excel 2008 grabs control again... I'm an early adopter and I sometimes run into these kinds of problems... I'll figure it out eventually... It was my hope they might have made Excel more efficient at running on Mac OS X now that it is native rather than running under Rosetta but my early impressions are that it has gone dramatically the wrong way... Too bad... Anyway, any other thoughts would be much appreciated.. I haven't yet but I will now go read the links you posted... thanks much... bob...

  • Removing obsolete file type associations from "Open With" menu

Ever since I removed VMWare Fusion 3.x from my system, I've been unable to remove the Bootcamp file type associations that it created. For example, if I right-click on a PDF and choose Open With, this is a partial list of what I see:
    Adobe Acrobat Pro (default)
Adobe Distiller (Mac) - Boot Camp partition (VMWare Fusion 3.0.0)
    Adobe Fireworks CS4
Adobe Fireworks CS4 (Mac) - Boot Camp partition (VMWare Fusion 3.0.0)
    Adobe Illustrator CS4
Adobe Illustrator (Mac) - Boot Camp partition (VMWare Fusion 3.0.0)
    Adobe Photoshop CS4
Adobe Photoshop CS4 (Mac) - Boot Camp partition (VMWare Fusion 3.0.0)
...and on and on and on. 17 additional entries for Fusion for PDS's alone. This junk is driving me crazy.
I've tried rebuilding the Launch Services database with MacPilot and Onyx (the recommended fix that I've found on the web), but the entries still are there even after restarting Finder and rebooting my iMac. I'm at a loss to figure out how to get rid of these.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks!

They are stored in the LaunchServices database. You can give this a try, but no guarantees. If you no longer use VM Fusion then I suggest following the information below on uninstalling software.
    Rebuild LaunchServices Database
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste in the following command in its entirety:
    find /System/Library/Frameworks -type f -name "lsregister" -exec {} -kill -seed -r \;
    Press RETURN.
Wait for the Terminal prompt to return after which you can quit the Terminal.
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead. Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • How to change "open with" defaults via command line?!?

    folks,
i know that if i get info on a file -- in this case, a filemaker 5.5 file -- i can choose the default "open with" settings and apply those settings to all files of that kind. see the attached image for what i mean.
but how do i do that via the command line?
thus far, here's what i've got: i know that i can open a document called "scrubbing shell.sh" on my desktop WITH either MS Word of TextEdit by calling:
    open -a textedit /Users/david/Desktop/scrubbing-shell.sh
    or
    open -a Microsoft\ Word /Users/david/Desktop/scrubbing-shell.sh
no sweat. BUT....how do i set the defaults so that it ALWAYS opens with that app in the future when double-clicking via the GUI?
    many thanks, ya'll!

    Hi David,
OK, I investigated the new format and treatment. It appears that the first entry in the property list file that matches the file being opened wins. The Finder may still honor the new format; when I moved my old Panther file into Tiger it seemed to work. However, in other ways, the Finder doesn't recognize the old format, which is the format of the FileMaker entries you posted.
The Finder puts all of the new format entries at the beginning of the property list file. If you change a preference that was controlled by an old format entry, the Finder won't edit that entry. What it will do is to create a new entry in the new format closer to the beginning of the file than any of the old-format entries. SInce the new entry comes first, the old one doesn't apply. If you then edit the preference and change it back to what it was before, the Finder will edit the new entry. Consider the following sequence of events and commands:
    % cp ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices_copy.plist
I change all GIF files to be opened by GraphicConverter instead of Preview, which is an old setting in the old format.
    % plutil -convert xml1 ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
    % diff --text ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices_copy.plist
    404,409d403
    <      <dict>
    <         <key>LSHandlerContentType</key>
    <         <string>com.compuserve.gif</string>
    <         <key>LSHandlerRoleAll</key>
    <         <string>com.lemkesoft.graphicconverter</string>
    <      </dict>
Then I change all the GIF files to be opened by Preview again.
    % plutil -convert xml1 ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
    % cp ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices_copy2.plist
    % diff --text ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices_copy.plist
    404,409d403
    <       <dict>
    <          <key>LSHandlerContentType</key>
    <          <string>com.compuserve.gif</string>
    <          <key>LSHandlerRoleAll</key>
    <          <string>com.apple.preview</string>
    <       </dict>
    % diff --text ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices_copy2.plist
    408c408
    <          <string>com.apple.preview</string>
              <string>com.lemkesoft.graphicconverter</string>
Note that I had to change the file to text after every change because the Finder converted the file to binary format every time it edited it. I didn't have to logout or reboot; the property list file change less than a second after the preference was set. I'm guessing that because you were just looking at the old-format entry, you missed the real changes to your property list file. Did it change from text to binary format? Try the command line tools that I used above.
Note that this means that it matters where you put your entries in the property list file if you edit it.

  • "Always Open with" check box forces you to use quicktime player, can't change it to VLC. Any help or Apple is really trying to take over???

When I Open an .avi movie with VLC and check the box "always open with", a dialog shows up saying that I can't change the item "...avi" to always open with the selected application. The item is either locked or damaged, or in a folder you don't have permission to modify (error code - 54)
So in summary I can't use VLC to always open .avi files. The file is in a folder that I created in my desktop with all permissions and working perfect (not damaged) I am the admin and owner of the Laptop and file.
The same happens when I check the box for .mov or .mp4 files but with them I don't even get the dialog box with the massage, it just opens directly with vlc and when you think it went through, I double click to open the file and it opens with quicktime. No matter how many times I check the box "Always open with" It will always open with quicktime.
On my other laptop, an old Sony Vaio with Windows 7 I never had this kind of stress. Why does this kind of thing only happens with Apple?
    Can anyone help?
