Open With iPhoto

Sometimes iPhoto is a simple to use program that does all I need --- but it can't organize like Bridge can, so I would like to use Bridge and then an "Open With iPhoto" command. I can add iPhoto to the applications in Preferences|File Type Associations, and Bridge then starts the iPhoto app after I double click an image -- but then I receive a message that "the file cannot be imported. It is in the iPhoto library." (Of course it is.)
Now, before ranting that this forum is for professionals and it's an Apple problem -- let me suggest that Apple made sure iPhoto had the ability to open an image for editing in Photoshop.
So, can somebody help me figure out how to make these two very good programs work together?

I should mention, you can right click on an image through finder, select 'Get info' scroll down till you see 'Open With:' here you can default iPhoto, then click 'change all' and continue... you can also just use iPhoto in select images by not clicking on 'Change all', the change will only apply to that image
This way you get iPhoto on the list as 'defualt' but still have all the others available as before...

  • My photolibrary can not be open with iphoto or rebuild in iphoto library manager?

I can not open my Photolibrary in iphoto, the whole database seem to be one XML file, I whent to apple support and purchase iphoto librabry manager and here I can see an index of my photo librabry with event and album index and number of photos. However when I use the rebuild function I get the following error and the rebuild library is empty.
"An error occurred trying to open the database at /Users/Desktop/iPhoto Library old/Database/Library.apdb (14)"
I have also tried to import or drag the library into iphoto but this doesn't work either.
Please help I have no back up on the last photo

Do you have a backup of the library with all the photos except for the last import? If so bring it into the Pictures folder (rename the existing Library so it doesn't get overwritten) and open with iPhoto. Make sure it's working correctly and has all of the photos except for that last import/event.
Once you have the backup library up and running move the old library to the Desktop and open it with the Finder:
Locate the Originals folder (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters folder (iPhoto 11) and move it to the Desktop. Then look inside and try to find the sub folder for the last imported set of photos.  When you find it drag it into the open iPhoto application window to import them into the library.

Scanning this way is much faster than using my printer but having to save each individually defeats the purpose.

  • Quicktime won't open with iPhoto

I have several small movies downloaded into iPhoto. I double click on them and nothing happens...they won't open Quicktime. All my software is fully updated so I don't have a clue what to do next. I know I can download them again to imagecapture and they play. I'd like to see them open in iPhoto. Thanks

iMovie is a cool app - have fun with it; while you're editing your movies, also learn about iDVD which would be the final step when creating movies: it has really cool themes (the screen you'll see when the DVD first starts playing in the DVD player).
As for stills: yes, you can get a still (as simple as taking a screen shot while pausing the movie), but be warned: the quality will not be anything worthwhile. I've tried it; the reason for the quality loss is the fact that you're looking at a movie file format; getting a still will render it into (most likely) a .jpg format and there will be significant loss of quality.
And, the previous version of Quicktime should be on your install disk (it's Quicktime 7) and it'll be placed in your Applications -> Utilities folder during the install.
Oops - is your profile correct? You're showing 10.5.x (Leopard) and the above notes are for Snow Leopard.
Edit: and here is the link to a direct download (IF you have Snow Leopard):

  • IPhoto 6 crashes when opening with iPhoto Library Manager with external sto

I've had stored many iPhoto libraries on my Freecom Mobile Drive 160gb, accessing them via iPhoto Library Manager, for years. Suddenly, when I try to open a library, iPhoto crashes. I'm still able to go into the storage disk so I don't think this is damaged. I've also reinstalled IPLManager (using original 3.2.3), without any luck.
I get this crash report (greatly abbreviated)
    PID: 809
    Thread: 0
    Exception: EXCBADACCESS (0x0001)
    Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000000
Does this make sense to anyone? I can't understand why one minute everything is fine, and then the next a procedure which has worked for a long time, doesn't. BTW, I've taken off lots of junk from the Freecom external drive (have 44gb available) and 3gb available on my iBook.
Many thanks in advance for any help or advice.

    That
    Exception Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE
is always a Data Related issue.
So use iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild the Library. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

    TD

  • TS1702 Why does my mac open with iphoto when I connect my iPhone

When I connect my iPhone to my Mac Mini the Mini opens automatically to iPhoto and just sits with the wheel spinning.  I have to force quit to exit.   My mini is set to automatically open in Itunes when conncected to an iPhone.  Not happening.  Any thoughts?

iPhoto SHOULD open if you have photos in the Camera Roll, just like it would with any digital camera.
For the problem with it not appearing in iTunes see: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1591

  • Photo library won't open with iPhoto 5 - asks for iPhoto4

I used iPhoto 5.04 many times. This time, I get a dialog box saying I am using an unreleased version of iPhoto and I need to use iPhoto 4 or iPhoto 2. Any suggestions????

    Hi ruth,
it would probably be better to start a new post just for you.
In case you don't, I will tell you that the answer I gave to the previous poster to create a new library is the only solution I found found for this error message.
    I will give instructions again;
    Close iPhoto
Rename your messed up iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
    Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and choose it.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
    This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.
    Good luck!
    Lori

  • IPhoto Library Won't Open When IPhoto is Launched

    Hello,
    I need some help please.
I have not changed any settings on my Macbook. I went to open IPhoto the other day as per usual, the application launched but the library did not open (none of my photos show up).
It does not give me any error messages. The IPhoto menu bar shows up at the top of the screen but the library does not show.
I can see my photos if I go to the All Documents tab in the Finder window, it says they are located in the IPhoto Library/Data. If I click on one to open, Preview is set as the default and IPhoto does not come up as an option to open the photo. If I go to other applications and click open with IPhoto I get the error message:
    UNREADABLE FILES: 1
The following files could not be imported. The file is in the IPhoto library.
I have not done anything to my computer. It is less than a year old, I do not understand why the library has disappeared.
    Thanks,
    San

I have also had this problem...all my photos disappeared in my previous version of iphoto, and I just installed ilife 08. My photo library seemed to get all messed up, so I trashed it and reinstalled the photos from my backup HD with Time Machine. iphoto says the library is there (it's in my pictures file in the finder), but they aren't in iphoto. I can't restore any individual photos, because iphoto says they are already there, and if I replace them, they still don't show up (The old version of iphoto, where the photos were still listed in the finder was much easier to use!).
I trashed the preference file. I am not being asked for user options except about the digital camera. What do you mean by 'point iphoto at it again'?
It also said that a lot of photos couldn't be imported because the files were wrong...but they were in my old version of iphoto (pre-ilife). I'm so confused. I have backed up all my photos but can't figure out how to get them on the computer. Arrrgghhhh.
    Thanks.

  • Sync problems with iPhoto (Last iTunes & iPhoto & iOS)

Some people have problems to with the music sync but anyone has the same problem but with the photos? iTunes doesn´t count the number of photos that suposse to be listed when you select your album on itunes/device/photos... I have once the problem with the music but it cames right after delete and resync my playlists.
         Thnks!
Tested on iPhone 5 and iPad2 Mavericks iTunes 11.1.2 and iOS 7.0.3 Same problem with iPhoto 9.4.3 and 9.5."

I have the same issue - iTunes 11.1.2, iOS 7.0.3, Mac OS X Mavericks, iMac 2011, iPhone 5S - Aperture 3.5 and iPhoto 9.5 - iTunes does not sync pictures (not even counts them) between my iPhone 5S and either one of the programs. When I select iPhoto, it even shows information of a library I am not opening with iPhoto anymore.
I have resorted for the time being, waiting for a bug fix, to copy what I am interested in, into a folder and sync from it - that at least works.
Moreover, contrary to what said here in other threads, I can Wi-fi sync my iPhone 5S and iPad 2 to iTunes 11.1.2.
And, about all the complaints of iTunes not showing the "Info" tab anymore, Mac OS X now supports natively more types of accounts (Gmail, Yahoo, Twitter, Facebook, AOL, etc.). Everything can still be also set up manually in any case - so I don't understand what everybody is bragging about - you can avoid using iCloud, if so one wishes.

  • How do I view the photos ? I backed up with iPhoto closed as is recommended , when I enter time machine and click on iPhoto library is calculates there is 11gb so photos are there when I click on view using iPhoto nothing happens ????

how do I view the photos ? I backed up with iPhoto closed as recommended but when I enter the Time Machine and click on iPhoto library it calculates there is 11gb in there so files must be present but when i click on open with iPhoto nothing happens ? any help welcome please !!??

The external hard drive must connect to your Mac using a USB or FireWire connection.
Note that the hard drive must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to work correctly with the iPhoto Library and be backed up to the Time Capsule and with the backups of your Mac.
We are really talking about iPhoto uses here, so you should post in the iPhoto Support area for more details about this. The link is just below.

Its kind of upsetting because i have to downgrade it to iLife '09 to use it... anyone?

    You need to re-install:
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • I recently upgraded to iphoto11 and now cannot open my iphoto.  I get a messageto first prepare iphoto with library upgrader.  downloaded upgrader, but nothing changes.  I don't know what to do

I recently successfully upgraded my mid-2007 mac desktop to OS X 10.9        I tried to purchase a print from my iphoto and it told me that I could not do this unless I upgraded to Iphoto version 9.5 which I then did.  When I attempted to open my iphoto library following the upgrade, I got the message "To open library with this version of Iphoto, it firsts needs to prepare"   I was then prompted to use the Iphoto library upgrader.  I downloaded the upgrader as it suggested.  However, nothing different happens.  I still get the same prompt each time I attempt to open the iphoto (telling me the I need to prepare with the library upgrader.)  I have no idea what to do next.  I am not finding any help in my online searches.  Can  someone please offer suggestions?  Keep in mind that I am not a computer expert, so simple terms/instructions would be most helpful.  Thank you!

Yes, I purchased the upgrade through the apple website, downloaded successfully.  When I clicked on the iphoto icon, that's when I got the prompt that said I needed to prepare my library using the library upgrader.  I got this from apple website as well.  It downloaded, then appeared on my desktop screen as a 'library upgrader'    I don't know what to do next?  When I click it, it just keeps repeating the download process.

    Hi,
I scoured the web looking everywhere for a solution to this.
    Exit Code 15
OSX 8.5 with Work@Home DVD media for CS6
I followed instructions to run 3rd party cleaner software
I tried the adobe removal tool
removing all copies of adobe software manually
installing from a new account, safe mode, plist everything suggested that i found did not work.
A colleague suggested that removing the below folder would allow the installation:
    /Library/Application Supports/Adobe
They turned out to be correct, so i am passing this on, because this took far too many hours of my time.
    Cheers,
    Smokey
