"Open With" sees multiple instances of applications

When I selected the "Open With" popup menu in the "Get Info" window, I see the names of applications duplicated several times. This behavior appears in more than one account. I see it not only under Get Info windows, but in all menus that provide a list of default applications.

This procedure sounds right - but it doesn't fix the problem. It's a start for research or some troubleshooting experiments, though.

Contextual menu in finder "open with" has multiple entries of same apps

When I use the contextual menu (right click) on documents, the menu point "open with..." shows multiple entries of the same programs. For example when right clicking a PDF, there appears 5 times neoOffice, 2 times Preview, 6 times ... any other application that you could use to open the document. This occurs on all user accounts, only that the multiplicity of listings of the apps is different. So it can't be a preferences problem on my account. What else could be the cause?
This is quite annoying because the apps-list becomes very long and unusable.
Note: I have 2 internal start up disks with OS and apps installed, but only one mounted. That means, there cannot be a duplicate (triplicate...etc) copy of any app accessible at any time.

Are you being literal? Like quitting the Finder too? Or what bespeaks you?
Actually, I use Xupport to do that, but I think Onyx and several other Utilities include that option.

Opening Files in Multiple Instances of Excel 2010

I've been using multiple instances of Excel 2003 using two monitors for a long time using Windows XP. I used to do this by opening Excel and opening Excel again from the Start menu and opening files through windows explorer and controlling which instance
of Excel it would open because it opens based on the recent active Excel instance. For example, I open Excel program instance #1 and then I open Excel program instance #2. If I click on the Excel program 1 and then go to windows explorer and open
a file, it will open on Excel program instance #1. If I click on instance #2 then open a file, it will open on instance #2.
However, now I have Windows 7 Pro with Excel 2010. At first, it would ALWAYS open the file in the first instance of Excel whenever I opened a file from windows explorer. I found some registry edits that will open a file in a new instance of Excel
EVERY time. I don't really like either solution. I want to control the number of Excel instances and determine which instance I want the file to open. I know I can do this via the Open/File menu in Excel but it's a much more onerous
way. I would like to know if there is a way I can make Excel 2010 and Win7 behave the way it did before with Excel 2003 and WinXP.

- i have 2 Excel-Instances running (can see it with TaskMgr) and i don´t want any
more Excel-Instances starting
- for several reasons (data-comparison side-by-side on 2 monitors, etc.), i´d like to control, in which instance
double-clicked XLS-Documents from Mails, Web-Downloads or (most wanted!) PlSql-Developers

- with Office2003 / WinXP it was very simple:
just activate the desired Excel instance before doing
the double-click or calling the export-function ... the XLS-Document opens exactly in a new window
of the previously activated Excel-instance
So it´s not about opening always in new Excel-Instances, therefore all .bat-Solutions or Registry-
modifications i´ve seen so far wont help. Also the mouse-drag/drop will not work for Web-Downloads
or Database-Exports, even sometimes not for XLS in Outlook-Mails.
Yes, i agree: Win 7 / Office 2010 is a massive downgrade for all users, that need informations on the
screen (instead of large, fancy icons), that want fast and efficient functionality (instead of clicking around
through "ribbons" and waiting more than twice a time for same operations, that run in XP/Office2003 simply great)
After digging the web, experimenting with registry-hacks, etc., i didn´t find any REAL solution.
That´s why i feel, all those of you (incl. me), that
have used their machines like described above, have lost.

i could switch back to XP/Office2003

Can't change "Open with" for multiple files

For some reason, all swfs on my computer won't open in the Flash player that came with Flash 9. If I select 1 swf and set it to open with the player, it will work, however, if I select multiple ones, get info and try to set them all to open in the player (or "Change All") I get a dialogue saying I don't "have privileges to change the application for these documents only. Do you want to change all similar documents to open with the application Flash Player.app?" This is rediculous because I could so this in Tiger just fine. Also, I'm the admin and i'm in MY account, so I should be able to do anything I want, right?
Any insights? I've repaired disk permissions by the way.

This is sometimes a problem with the launchservices database. You can try the following to fix it:
Rebuild LaunchServices Database
For Tiger users
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste in the following command in its entirety:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServic es.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Press RETURN.
For Leopard users
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste in the following command in its entirety:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Press RETURN.
If this isn't successful then there may be other problems involved. You can try this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
You can install the freeware preference pane, RCDefaultApp - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - which is useful for extensive control over various file associations.

"Open with" displays multiples of each program

My 2009 Intel iMac running OSX 10.8.2 keeps adding duplicate entries of programs in the "Open With" contextual sub-menu when opening files from within Finder (See screen grab below). It adds them only occasionally, but once it's added a duplicate, the duplicate doesn't go away. Some programs are listed as many as 4 times. It doesn't matter how frequently I use a given program; and by the way, I've checked - I only have one installation of each of these...
Anyone know how to fix this?

I would add an application that's not listed by default when I choose "Open with" for an image file, how can I do that?

That's not an easy thing to do. The application informs the system what file types it recognizes. If the application doesn't show up in the "Open with" list, it may not be capable of opening the file. What's the application and what kind of image file are you trying to get it to open?

"Open with" shows multiple app's with same name; 2 at most are valid

I use Preview as my default JPEG viewer application; when I want to edit I used another application and use "Open With". I have a backup drive mounted and the app's backed up show... that's a nuisance, but acceptable.
However, there are 5 listings for some applications, yet only 2 possible copies (as verified by Spotlight). How can I clean-up the list? Is there a way to tell an app's source (in the menu)?

A long shot perhaps, but at the bottom of the Open With submenu you will see "Other...". If you go in there there is a setting for either "All Applications" or a specific application folder to be selected. Have you assigned the latter and does it help?

Multiple instances of application server

i m using oracle 9i application server 1.0.2.2 on windows
i have installed 2 instanes of aplication server...i have done only COR INSTALLATION as i have to run oonly PLSQLMODE.
one instance is running on port 80 and second is on 81.
the problem i am facing is about creaing DADS...both instances are using same file(this file created on first instance installation) which is "wdbsvr.app"...i dont know why second instance is also using this file..i think it must use its own file not this..
for example if i make a DAD with the namd TEST using first instance...and if i use second instance to see the DADS i have created using second instances...it shows me the DADS created by the first instance and if i create DADS using second instance...i can see them using first instance...and whe i manually open the file "wdbsvr.app" of the first instance, i see all DADS there but no DAD in the "wdbsvr.app" file of second instance..
i have done both installation on different homes and using same operating system user etc.

yes you are right, this is not a permanent solution....
but i dont understand ur last line "You could always use one web server and configure more than one DAD."
let supose i have one HTTP server....i have two databases and ... how can i create two DADs of same name to access a procedure in the schema of SCOTT on both databases...
this is my problem...
i have two identical databases, one is development and one is for QA department.....i am using a schema SEWN on both databases which is identical in both databases. and i have to create a DAD "APPLINK".....i don think that using a single HTTP server i could create two dads of same name.....
for this sake i need to have two instances.......
i tried to set this variable in the registry for both HOMES but registry doesnt work..
what do u suggest now....

Help with running multiple instances of conky in openbox.

A few days ago I installed openbox after uninstalling KDE- due to it being just to heavy on my old laptop. I have everything setup now apart from conky, which is actually setup (I have it customized it to my liking). But if i try to run all my conky's at startup- they either flicker alot if i have "own_window" set to "no". This enables me to click the desktop without the openbox menu being hidden under a conky. But if i set it to "yes" it fixes the flickering issue, but then i cannot click on the desktop where the conky's are. And due to having a small screen, when opening the openbox menu it gets hidden by a conky window. I have searched the forums but i cannot seem to find an answer to this. If you know how to fix this please respond as quickly as possible...

Also i have another question, i have installed a gtk theme for my setup and all icons have changed. But because by default you don't have media folders eg. Documents, Pictures. I had to create them, so they have stayed as the default gtk theme icon for a folder. How would i go about making them use the documents icon etc.

I don't want to set own_window to yes unless there is a workaround for displaying the openbox menu over the top of conky when own_window is set to yes. Also double_buffer is already set to yes with the own_window set to no.
EDIT: I can set own_window to no and there will be no flickering and i can click on the conky and it will bring up my openbox menu. But this only works with one instance of conky. If i run a second instance of conky it starts flickering and the amount of flickering increases the more instances of conky i'm running.

Stopping Multiple Instance of Application

I have one application. I want to restrict user from executing the application multiple times. Means If user executes the application & again try to execute the same application, i want to stop it by giving the message as One instance already exists.

Well if the computer crashes, your SOL for using that program again.

We had done this by writing a file on the user's
machine.
Our application used to check the existence of that
file. If the file is present then show him the message
that the application is already running.Else run the
application and create the file.
Remember to delete that file on every exit of the
application both NORMAL as well as ABNORMAL.

Central 5.7 problem with controling multiple instances

I have an installation of Central 5.7 pro running 12 instances on Windows 2003 server 32 bit and have noticed that all instances don't always come up when the machine is rebooted or service started. Central also doesnt handle the right instance when stoping and starting different instances even it is choosed the right way. Example: I select instance of central nr 8 for control and do "shot down central" for the instance 8, it may stop instance 10 etc. !? then start central on the same instance it says "also running" ? It seems that it doesnt have the right control which instance should be active.

I've compared the jfmerge.ini, jfserver.ini and jfserver.jmd in the new server with the current server and most of the properties looks similar. I've tried the below things but we end-up with the same blank page issue with one Character.
1) We've copied the jfserver.ini file from the current server ( central server 5.5) to the new server (central server 5.7 ) and imported the transaction file.
2) Compiled the templates in Output Designer 5.7 and imported the same into forms directory.
3) Used the command line program options to load the template during calling -q and -afx.
We do stop and start adobe server for each change. Could you please tell me what are all the settings thats needs to be considered during the migration of Adobe Output Designer 5.5 to Adobe Output Designer 5.7 ?

Insert a value in a table with a multiple instanced row in a multiple intanced subform

First a little background on my problem.
A part of my form is designed to show how the lamp units for our produkt should be built.
There could be 0 to 4 lamp units on the product and each lamp unit can have 2 to 6 lamps.
So when they fill in the amount of lamps I create that same amount of instances of the subform "LampUnits" and another table where they can fill in the amount of lamps per unit.
As soon as they fill in the qty for a lamp unit that qty(instances) of rows for that specific lamp unit is made. See picture.
this is how far I have managed to get.
but what I need to do now is to fill the id fields of the lamp units.
at this moment I have the following script behind the exit event of the lamp unit quantity cell:

In the example you posted, should the lamps be named lamp1 - lamp9? or are you looking for something a little more specific for each lamp?

Just bought this computer less than a month ago, everything is perfect except for this little bug that seems to be getting worse and worse.

That indicates a corrupt LaunchServices database, which controls that stuff. Launch the Terminal app in /Applications/Utilities/, copy & paste in this one-liner (ensure that there are no spaces in the first line, the forum's software sometimes displays
Launchse rvices, instead of Launchservices, in the window), hit the return key, quit Terminal, and restart:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

Firefox opens with multiple instances

I asked this before. The problem has come back.
"Firefox is operating strangely. I recently updated to 5.0.
Now, I use FF with several add-ons, including Too Many Tabs. When I closed FF last night, there were 5 tabs, plus a total of 31 tabs in 7 TMT toolbars. I closed FF normally.
When I ran FF this morning, it opened over 20 instances of Firefox. All of them except the 'main' one had a little orange 'Firefox' at the upper left, and no toolbars, and the main one opened with a New Tab only -- that is, the 5 tabs that I had were lost.
I think that this is a FF 5 problem, as this happens every day, and I didn't have this problem before, but I don't remember when it started. I think it started when I updated to FF 5, which was recently.
Now, when I had the problem before, there were a whole bunch of sessionstore-##.js files in my profile folder. I deleted them (leaving the sessionstore.js itself), and the problem was solved -- for a few days.
Now it's happening again, FF5 opens with over twenty instances -- two or three more every day -- and loses the tabs it had when I last closed, but there is only the one sessionstore.js. I have read the file and it looks like it's OK, but I wouldn't really know.
The fix before was to delete sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak. Is there anything else?

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.<br />
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and all open tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).
