Open With selection in Mountain Lion lags

I'm now in ML 10.8.4 I now notice that when I go to the menu to select an app to open up a file with I get the blue circle and this lasts up to 20 seconds before I get the app list to choose from. Is this a ML thing or my set up as I have 4 interanal drives as well as an external back up.

Unmount all volumes except the startup volume. Does the same thing happen?

  • How do I remove apps from the "open with" menu in Mountain Lion?

If I right-click a document in Finder, I get a contextual menu offering all of the potential applications with which I might open that document.  My problem is that some of those applications are no longer operational and I want them to be removed from the menu.  How can I do that?

I'm not sure how the order is determined. Clearly, the first level sort is ascending by application name these days (since Lion, I think), but it seems to be random after that. It's not by version, though that would be convenient.
Also, I notice that on my relatively clean Mountain Lion system I sometimes get duplicate entries in the "open with" list that cannot be explained by duplicate copies of the application. On a text file, I get two each of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Equation Editor, Evernote, and Xcode; none of these is duplicated on this system. I get only one entry each for the Notepad stub application, a few Adobe apps, TextWrangler, Safari, Numbers, Pages, and several others.
Where there are duplicated entries, it doesn't seem to matter which one I select; I get the same instance of the program no matter which I select. I take this to mean that one is an alias for the other.
That's my mystery and not necessarily yours. Are your "unhelpful but working stub applications" also duplicates?

  • 'open with' crashes since Mountain Lion upgrade

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help as I'm going out of my mind here, when I use CTRL+click on an image and highlight 'open with' it doesn't load the menu with the relevant applications and just crashes, removing everything from my desktop briefly and then returning.  It happens every time without fail, I can CTRL+click documents and be offered Text Edit, Pages etc as normal, it seems to only be images.  I would usually use either preview or Photoshop CS4 but I dare say there were 4 or 5 things usually in that menu, I can't remember now.
Anyone got any ideas?  I've tried following suggestions from a similar problem on this forum but to no avail.
This has only happened since I upgraded to Mountain Lion and I should also point out I'm suffering from other problems like sluggish wake up and flashing bright white light from the entire screen upon wake up!
    Thanks in advance.

That sounds like LaunchServices. These are only cache files but can get corrupted. Launch /Utilities/Terminal and copy & paste this at the command line to rebuild LaunchServices: (be sure to copy the entire line it's a scroll)
    Code:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Then press return. Wait until terminal returns to the command line. Quit Terminal. After that, log out and back in or restart. Let us know
Or, use the free utiltiy OnyX to do the same via gui
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11582/onyx (for 10.8)
But the other issues sound more serious.
EDIT: You could do a re-install of ML. You can unstall "in place" so none of your data or apps are effected. or you could consider running with Display Sleep only. Very little additional power consumed.  But probably not on an Air.

  • What has happened to 'select' in Mountain Lion?

I have two problems with selecting in Mountain Lion.
    1. I can no longer drag select on Mail and other rpograms. I have to do a cmd A and then delete in the trash, for instance. I used to beable to select all of the items with a mouse drag.
    2. Even when I do a cmd A, if I then right click to open, for instance, I find that it has selected the one item that is under the mouse pointer rather than all of the selected items.
Is there somewhere that I can put back these to the old way?
    David

I'm experiencing the same problem 1 in Mountain Lion's Mail, but not in other apps (tested the Finder and Contacts) where click+drag still works as it used to selecting adjacent items in the list.
It seems that in Mail the setting of verticalMotionCanBeginDrag has been changed to YES.
As for point 2 I can't confirm your report. I can open all selected items with right click.
    Best,
    Erne.

  • Sync google tasks with reminder in mountain lion

Is there a way to sync google tasks with reminder in Mountain Lion?

Findley you're correct because I did the same thing.
I'll summarize for all people with the same problem :
If you are a Google user like me (Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Contacts) you will probably run into trouble getting the Reminders and Notes working.  After trying a lot of things I just gave up and decided to stick with Google, except for the Reminders and Notes. In other words :  I'm now using iCloud for these two and it works perfectly : very fast and without any trouble whatsoever.  There seems to be a catch because of the fact that Notes are tied with a @me.dcom email address and Reminders are tied with an Apple iCloud Calendar, but in fact, you can just ignore them and keep using Google for that.
In other words:  I let Apple create an iCloud Calendar when enabling iCloud Reminders, but I'm not using the Calendar and I let Apple create an @me.com email address but I'm not using it.  To use Notes and Reminders I'm using the apps on my iPhone and Macbook for that.  I can also login to iCloud.com using any browser to access Notes by opening the iCloud email app and Reminders by opening the iCloud Calendar app.  Later this year, Apple will even provide seperate Notes and Reminders icons on the iCloud website so it will be even more transparant.
So, Google for :  mail, calendar, contacts
iCloud for : Safari, Notes, Reminders, Find my Mac, PhotoStream
For Documents, I'm not using neither Google or iCloud for the moment... it's up to you to decide.
This solution has no drawback as far as I know and it works perfectly.

Will CS2 work with Apple's Mountain Lion?

    Hi,
You might see errors such as "You can't open the application Adobe <App Name XXX> because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."
You might also like to visit this page http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/error-powerpc-applications-supported-photoshop.html for a similar scenario with Adobe Photoshop.

  • If you get a new 2013 macbook air does the laptop come with os x mountain lion?

I have a new 2013 MacBook Air and i was wondering if my laptop came with OS X Mountain Lion????

It should. To check click the Apple logo in the menu bar (top left) and select "About This Mac"
If the OS X version shows 10.8 then you have Mountain Lion.
If you don't have the Mac yet then the new one you buy will have Mountain Lion on it.

  • Cisco Connect does not run with Mac OSX Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

When I first installed Cisco Connect that came with my E1500 router, I was running Mac OSX Snow Leopard (10.7) and it worked fine.  I upgraded my OSX to Mountain Lion and now when I start Cisco Connect, I get:
    Unsupported operating system
The router software supports these operating systems:
    - Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later
    - Mac OS X 10.6.1 or later
    - Mac OS X 10.7 or later
I saw some other thread/info/download on Cisco Connect with Lion (10.7) but nothing for Moutain Lion (10.8) - is there a fix forthcoming?
    Thanks
    Gary

All i want to do is disable the guest function through cisco. i live in an apartment and everyone logs into my guest account. i was at my neighbours and they were laughing saying they done need to subscribe for the internet cause they just log onto local wi fi. and mine is one of them. i dont know if that'll slow down my internet with so many people using it. but all i want to do is just avoid it all together and get rid of it. but in this case i am having the same problem as all of you. to disable the guest function you need to go through cisco connect and it is not compatible with mac osx mountain lion. grrrrrrr

    Hi,
    Thank you for your email,
Unfortunately there is some issues currently with MAC OSX Mountain Lion and the Leappad Explorer drivers. We have been in contact with apple regarding this solution and have developed a fix for the issue. This will be implemented in Apple's next OSX update which should be soon.

II recently purchased this 21.5 inch iMac in the month of February. The woman that helped me through the process of purchasing this told me that it comes with the latest Mountain Lion. which it did, but i cant write a review in the app store! Help...

You want to write a review about Mountain Lion? I'm not sure that you can write about the OS at the app store - it's not an app. Or are you talking about the online Apple store? If you want to send feedback to Apple, you could use this:

  • Why facetime can't open in os x mountain lion

why facetime can't open in os x mountain lion.
and it always say can't find the facetime server!

Yeah, you probably need at least $21.50 depending on where you live. In my case, tax is 8.25%, so I would need $21.65 account credit to buy it. If you add a credit card to your account, it will use all of your store credit, then take the remaining dollar or so from your credit card to buy it.

You can't. Microsoft have not added support for the industry standard sync protocols iCloud uses.
