Open word or excel in mac

Hi there, I'm having problems opening some microsoft office documents?
I think all was fine until recently, however, now some won't open...giving the message "cannot open this workbook" "The filename or path contains invalid characters(for example, /)."
Does anyone know why?
these these files were probably made on an older windows office program, but how can I get them to rork now on my Mac?

Call it Monday morning humor.... ALL the MacBook Pro owners we see asking the same thing (more than once a day, too) are slower since 10.10.x so we can assume something. Heard the very same story with every new OS in the past decade from laptop owners, heard a lot especially with Snow Leopard back in Aug-Sept 2009.
A new OS goes better if you do a clean install / checked Roaringapps.com for compatibility / wait for vendors to have updates
About the only things that can be done in addition - if you have like many posting those symptoms have minimal 4GB RAM is to upgrade to 8GB+ and throw in a new 250GB+ SSD (the most recent MBP have to be bought with and cannot add RAM later).
Even the MacBook Air 2014 though with 4GB RAM have PCIe-SSDs that helps, plus 4th gen Intel i5's and an IG of 5000 or later all help.
Try including more details. Model year and configuration at least.

I can no longer open word or excel files from my email in firefox, i can in all other browsers. it started november 5, 2014

Yesterday afternoon, out of the blue, I can no longer open word or excel documents from my gmail account in firefox browser on windows 7. I can in all other browsers. The error message is "There was a problem sending the command to the program"

As a workaround, does it work to save the files first and then open them after saving?
Sometimes when Firefox has problems handing off a download to another program it is caused by a corrupted settings file. That file is hard to edit, so usually we suggest renaming the file to see whether that resolves the issue. Here's how:
Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either
* "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
* (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
* type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter
In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders.
Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:
* "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
* (menu bar) File > Exit
Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename '''mimeTypes.rdf''' to something like mimeTypes.old
Start Firefox back up again and test your Gmail attachments. Any improvement?
Note: This resets some preferences to their defaults, such as which PDF viewer Firefox uses. If you need to update that again, please see this article: [[How to disable the built-in PDF viewer and use another viewer]].

It always help to list the computer model #, current OS, and the verison of MS Office presently being used.

Outlook 2013 won't open Word and Excel attachments

Had a new PC set up with MS Office 2013 programs. Outlook 2013 Word and Excel attachments do not open. Program opens, but to a blank screen. This includes my attachments created on the same computer. Boxes in "Trust Center"
are unchecked. Problem persists. It is possible to save the attachment, then open Word or Excel and see the saved file, but this is time consuming and annoying. Outlook 2013 should just open its attachments from the message without a thousand
extra steps. Thank you.

Did this issue occur in OWA?
We could open outlook->File->option->Trust Center ->Microsoft Outlook Trust Center->Trust Center Setting->Attachment Handing->Attachment and Document Preview…
Then we make sure all option have check. And didn’t uncheck “Turn off Attachment Preview”, or rebuild the profile to check if the issue persist.

Open word or excel full screen not embedded

Im new to SAP and Solution manager so this question might be a little stupid. I searched the forum for an answer to this question and I couldn't find it. So my question is when we view or edit word and excel docs in solution manager can we have it open the file in word or excel without it being embedded in solution manager.

What area of Solution Manager are you having this issue when opening uploaded Word/Excel documents?
Are you opening them in change/edit mode or in view/display mode? Typically you would need to open them in change/edit mode. However more information would be helpful.

Help. I understand there is an ap I can purchase to be able to work from my computer. I want to be able to open word/excel docs.

Pages has a version for iOS, and there are other apps for iOS, reportedly capable of reading these files. I do not like iPad so am not very good here, my son is better, for sure.

Can't open Word and Excel documents after updating to Yosemite

I have updated to Yosemite and now every time I try to open the application of Word or Excel or any of the documents I have i get the following message:
"You can’t open the application “Microsoft Excel” because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."
I need to fix this please as these are business documents. I also have Templates for MS Office but they don't open what I have.

You need to open them in Office 2008 or newer, LibreOffice, Pages/Numbers, or similar software.

Can't open Word or Excell attachments

Hi, I am suddenly unable to open any Word or exell attachments! PDF's are all ok.
I am using the latest Chrome brower Windows 7 Offfice 10 64bit processor. I have a bt.com email.
The docs open ok in my iphone.
when I try to open a Word attachement I get an error message saying " check permissions " or " not enough memory "
Excell says "not enough memory"
I have cleaned out my RAM and have over 6gb free.
Any ideas on how to help please? Thanks

I'm sorry I don't use Chrome - but I would suggest you look at the security settings in Chrome, and see if there is a setting that may be preventing this. It also may relate to which programs are approved by Chrome as the default to deal with various file types, and what action to take. For examle, there should be settings which tell Chrome what to do with a *.pdf or *.xls or *docx file, whether to open it (and if so, what program to use), save it to disk, or "always ask". Anyone with Chrome want to help with specific settings?

I hope I've got the right thread...
I've got a G5, OSX 10.3.9 I haven't got either Word or Xcel on my computer, my last computer G4 came with both Word and Xcel installed on it, but sadly not the G5, can I download the full packages for both for FREE? I'm a student and need Word for college and having to rely on the PCs at college is not ideal when I want to work from home but I can't it is so infuriating. Is there a costly price to get both applications for a Mac?

Word and Excel never came free with any machine. Their Test drive might have come free, but not the full software. As a student, you can purchase the Office Student Edition. You can also try http://www.neooffice.org/ for an alternative to Microsoft Office, or Think Free Office which is around $50. Appleworks is also available, though not as compatible with Office formats as the former two.

How can I open word documents in my mac?

I am trying to open some attachments sent to me which were written in microsoft word for windows 2007 in my mac word 2011 and it opens up a bunch of gibberish. Can someone tell me what I can do to open it correctly?

I upgraded to IOS 5 over the weekend. Just discovered Iphone 4 will not open excel or word files after upgrade. I can still view PDF's.
Any suggestions?

"Unrecognisable Format" when trying to open file in EXCEL for Mac

Hi guys,
The other night I left my comp on, with a microsoft excel file open, and the battery went flat. Obviously the computer closed down, but the next day when I tried to open this particular file, all I can get is "This file is in an unrecognisable format", and it won't open.
Can anyone help? Is there a way of reverting to an earlier saved version of this file? (eg from the day before?)

That file is probably dead and gone
Do you have a backup that you made previously if not that's something else to put right urgently
I haven't used Excel for over 10years so you will need to check the help files but at one time I thought it did a save of the open file every so often as AppleWorks does on the Mac. If so find where it is, help files again, it may not be under the name you called it but a reference given by the software.
Also try a search on the name and or date they may show it up

Hi I recently downloaded Microsoft Mobile apps including word excel powerpoint using Nokia suite, in my Nokia E7 phone, the size was 50 mb, nokia suite confirmed that files are downloaded and installed and restarted the phone. But after restarting I can't see any changes in the microsoft apps. all the microsoft apps are as it was onenote, Lync, document, and powerpoint broadcast. but then where is word, excel and poowerpoint? Won't it come as a new icon?
Clueless about what happenned. Can anybody help me please? I checked in software update, it says E7 is uptodate.
