Open XML converter not coverting docx to doc

I am trying to open docx in word 2004 for mac. On my old iBook I had the microsoft Open XML converter which worked fine. I just download it on my newly acquired macbook and it only converts docxs to rfts. How do I get it to convert docxs to docs?

Check the MS website; I believe they offer a free docx converter now. TextEdit will open docx documents, but often without the formatting. OpenOffice probably opens them, as well.
I use docxConverter, a free utility available from many places online.

  • "Open XML Converter" opening when I click "Open in finder" in stacks

Today, suddenly, "Open XML Converter" opens when I click "Open in finder" in stacks or select a folder in Spotlight.
This happens in only one account (mine; I have quarantined admin and guest accounts).
I have repaired permissions a number of times, re-booted, used Time Machine to restore the Preferences folder from before it started up, deleted and re-installed the program and nothing changes it.
This is highly annoying and I don't know what to do, except delete Open XML Converter, which I'd rather not do.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

  • Commandline: Opening a directory opens Microsoft "Open XML Converter"

    Hello everyone,
I am trying to open a directory from the commandline, like this:
    user1@HOSTA:~ $ open '/Volumes/Macintosh HD/Applications/'
I expected the directory to open in the Finder, but instead a program called Microsoft "Open XML Converter" starts up instead. 'Finder' never opens. It seems like the default "type" was munged when "Open XML Converter" was installed.
I have searched around the internet and in these forums, but I cannot find any answers. I appreciate any help on how to fix this.

try running this script from the script editor (I picked it up somewhere - can't remember where). it should rebuild the launch services database, which might fix the problem.

  • Open XML Forms not using KM

    Hi experts,
    I have the following request:

By now I have always filled in new XML Forms documents by accessing KM and selecting 'New > Form > <custom form>'.
Now I need to access a XML Form by clicking a link in Portal (without accessing KM). Is there any special iView already created for this? Is this possible in any other way?
Many thanks in advenced and regards

    Hi,
You can create a KMnavigation iView and change the following propertie s

Assign this Iview to the role and role to a user.So when user clieks on role he can create  news .

  • Performance issue when opening DOCX Word Doc with Excel Links

Is this a bug or is there a config setting that can prevent Word from needlessly opening Excel repeatedly (upon initial open of a DOCX Word doc) when pre-existing links should NOT be updated. The behavior is good using 2003 formats (DOC & XLS),
but varies significantly (~100:1 range in performance) depending on the test scenario (see below) using DOCX with XLSX.
We can't move our environment to the new XML formats until we can find a fix. We were led to believe Microsoft knew this to be a bug in Office 2007, but it has NOT been corrected in Office 2010. Omitting a detailed explanation for why we need to
do this, here's our test scenarios:
-Currently testing Office 2010 Pro Trial version on WIN XP SP3. (We have found similar results using Office 2007 with Win7 or XP).
-Word Option Deselected/DISABLED: "Update Automatic Links at Open"
-The Word Doc contains 100 linked Excel tables and is 130K in size (DOCX).
-Each link points to the same 10x10 cell range in one Excel Workbook located in same directory as the Word Doc, although other tests using separate directories produced similar results.
-The Excel Links were inserted into Word via Paste Special/Paste Link/MS Excel Worksheet Object.
-The workbook (XLSX) is 15K in size.
-All Links are set for "Manual" update, our testing showed no difference if links are set to "Auto".
-Again, Word is set to NOT update Automatic links when the document is opened.
-Results shown below are for local hard drive test.
-Network response times are slightly greater on 100mb LAN
-Word is completely restarted prior to each test to make sure there's no application caching involved.
LOCAL DRIVE RESPONSE TIMES TO OPEN THE WORD DOC in Docx format:
    1. Open the Word Doc from Word with Excel closed - 175 seconds (Excel appears to be opened and closed once per link)
    2. Open the Word Doc from Word with Excel open & workbook closed - 33 seconds (Excel appears to be accessed once per link)
    3. Open the Word Doc from Word with the linked workbook already open - 7 seconds (Excel appears to be accessed once per link)
    4. Rename Excel XLSX workbook so that Word can't find it. Then open Doc the from Word. 1-2 seconds (Excel does not appear to be invoked)
    5. Repeat ALL of the above scenarios 1-4 using DOC and XLS files. These files are created with "Save AS" option based on original test files and then re-pasting the links.  1-2 seconds to open the Word Doc (Excel does not appear to be invoked)
    Summary
Using DOCX/XLSX, if Word can't find the linked spreadsheet it gives up and performs nicely during file-open. Otherwise, Word performs needless, time-consuming access to Excel, and in the worst case, opens and closes Excel repeatedly in the background.
Testing with DOC/XLS formats gives good performance across all scenarios.

It is a known bug and one for which AFAIK, there has been no fix.  The only way that I could get around it in a particular application was to do something like save the linked information as document variables and then on opening the document recreate
all the information.  My memory on exactly what I did is a bit hazy, but I can go back and check if you are interested.

    Hi Senthilkumar,
I really appreciate for your kind Hint of SEL ID.
I created and assigned new 'Sel Priority' to the SEL ID same as for Routing.
Now while converting Planned order to Production order system is asking for Reference operation set as there is no such need of Routing as I already mentioned in previous post.

  • Pages loses formatting and text when converting from docx or doc

I receive .docx or .doc documents that I need to convert to a PDF. However, I frequently lose both formatting and text when I open the document in Pages. I don't understand how to fix the problem. I have tried copying/pasting the text into a new Pages document, but nothing changes.
Also, I have heard there is a freeware program out there that some Apple users use that retains the formatting, but I don't know the name.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated. I have to use a PC in the meantime.

    Hi Tricia,
Like Yvan earlier, I must confess some surprise at Pages losing text content of a Word document on translation. Formatting, yet.
The only circumstance where text loss seems at all likely is if the text was contained in a Text Frame. Even then, I would expect the frame to be converted to a Text Box, and the contents retained in the Pages document.
Meantime, I would recommend you try OpenOffice.org or NeoOffice, either of which will open .doc and .docx files, and will save to either of those formats as well. The links will take you directly to the sites for these applications.
Regarding the long download times: a 24 hour estimate would indicate you are on a dialup connection, or getting only dialup speeds. Most public libraries and a large number of coffee houses here in Canada offer free wireless hot spots that provide a high speed connection. If that's also true in Colorado, you might find it more efficient to take your MacBook to one of them for a shorter download time.

  • Converting docx to doc files using wordconv.exe

    Hello,
I have a requirement wherein I need to convert the docx files to doc files. I looked around and found the "Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File
Formats" ("http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466&displaylang=en"). Installing this would place a bunch of files in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\ directory. This folder also contains an executable named "Wordconv.exe" which according to http://www.oooninja.com/2008/02/office-compatibility-pack-review.html converts the docx files to doc files if you use the execute something like the following in the command prompt:-
    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\wordconv.exe" -oice -nme <input file> <output file>
I downloaded the compatibility pack and tried the above command. Nothing happens. No error message,no output, nothing. I wonder what is the problem. In the above link, some guys have suggested to download the latest windows updates from Windows.
Well,I tried this in my Windows XP (with Service Pack 2) and only thing I am left to install in service pack 3. Is that required? This WIndows XP machine does not have the Office 2007 installed. Is it required?
Also,I tried this on a Windows server 2003 machine which also has the compatibility pack and result is same. This machine does have the Office 2007 installed.
Am I missing anything? If yes, please let me know as I am kinda stuck in this. I dont want to use a commercial product like "Aspose.Words" for this.
Is there any other tool available from Microsoft to convert docx to doc files? Please let me know.
I am cuurently looking into the Office tools.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Ashish

    Hello!

    Have you found the solution?

  • Error message in .docx : 'Open XML file cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents. Details Unspecific error Location: 2'

I have put a lot of work into a docx document on my Mac, but now can't open it as it gives the error message: 'the Open XML file cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents. Details, Unspecific
    error, Location: 2'
When opening the original file the message said: 'this file contains word 2007 for Windows equations' etc. but I managed to track changes fine, and saved, closed and re-opened it numerous times without problem. Some graphs seemed moved, and various formulas
were illegible, but no other weirdness was observed.
I have microsoft 2008 installed on my Mac OS X version 10.6.8.
I've tried to fix it using various solutions suggested here, but am afraid am too IT illiterate to have had any luck, please help I'm new to all this!

    Hi,
This issue is related strictly to oMath tags and occurs when a graphical object or text box is anchored to the same paragraph that contains the equation.
Please use the "Fix it" tool in the following KB article to resolve the problem. See:

  • Bridge opening office files with xml converter

Adobe Bridge CS3 is opening all my excel files with xml converter and promting me to save as.  How do I switch it to default to Microsoft Excel when opening these files?

These options are handled in the Bridge prefs under File Associations, but if I remember correctly this is somewhat limited in CS3 since it only handles Adobe files that install their associations. Any other file type is handled by whatever the opoerating system offers. Well, you can always look and give it a try...

New to using iCloud.  I created a large pages document on Mac Air and saved it to my iCloud account.  Found it at home on desktop Mac and downloaded it.  No problem.  However, it will not open due to the index.xml file not being found.  What should I do to open this document?  I've tried several things and no luck yet.  Thanks for any tips!  :-)

Try this. It worked for me:
    1. Single click on the document. This will "highlight" the document icon, but not invoke the error message.
    2. Click on "File" in the menu.
    3. Scroll down to "Open With".
    4. One of my choices in the "Open With" selection is Pages (default) (5.0.1)
    5. Click on that choice and the document should open.
In my "Open WIth" selection there is also a Pages (4.0.4), but that didn't work for me.
Now, here is a caveat. If before you open your document you instead first click on an open Internet window, then the "Open With" selection disappears from the File menu. In that case just single click again on the document icon again and the "Open With" selection returns.

    Try this:
      1. Make a duplicate of the file (cmd D), just to be safe
      2. Select .pages on the copy and change to .zip
      3. When the System asks if you really want to do this, click Use .zip
      4. Double click the new .zip file
      5. It will now appear as a folder with no extension
      6. Append .pages to the end of the folder name
      7. Again click on Use .pages
      8. Double click on this file to open it in Pages.
What you have done is extracted all the Pages resources from the .pages "package" and reconstructed it.

  • Raw file converter not opening automatically in Elements 12.

I have upgraded my Elements 9 to Elements 12. I used to be able to open a raw file directly into the raw editor in Elements 9. With Elements 12 I click to open the raw file with Elements 12 but Elements opens into the basic editor with no picture opening. I then have to select Open Camera Raw from the file menu and select the photo again. The photo then opens.
Is there a setting i can change so that elements 12 opens directly into the raw editor?
    Thanks.

There is no so such thing as "Open Camera Raw". Look again; it's Open in Camera Raw, which is for jpegs and tiffs that you want to edit in the raw converter, not a way to open the raw converter itself.
So when you double click a raw file in the finder, what happens? And what camera are these files from?
