Openbox alternative with tiling builtin?

Hello, I am using LXDE right now until I can switch over to a qt-desktop (once it's stable), and I'd like to find another floating window manager that can do tiling. Particularly, I want to be able to set a keybinding to have windows move to take up the left/right half of the screen and possibly quarters of the screen. I'm aware that there are many tiling wms out there, but I was hoping for a floating wm that works like openbox, but has that tiling ability built into it. My first attempt was pekwm, but unless I missed something, it couldn't do tiling like I wanted. I do like the look of it much more than openbox though. I've also heard that openbox has a plugin thing to get tiling, but I'd rather experiment with an alternative wm.

If you don't need continuous tiling, I heartily recommend FVWM because it gives you a lot of freedom in your configuration. I have this functionality bound to drag gestures initiated by the right mouse button on the titlebar.
Drag left to fill the left half of the screen.
Drag up and left to fill the top left quarter of the screen.
Drag left, then up to fill the first 1/8 of the screen (1/4 width, 1/2 height)
Drag up, then left to fill the second 1/8 of the screen.
Drag left, then right, to fill the left 3/4 of the screen
and so on.
You can bind whatever to whatever, including keychains and buttons that do dozens of different things depending on mouse button and modifiers keys used; you can also put buttons wherever you want and aren't restricted to traditional panels or window borders. FVWM is a lot more powerful than Openbox, can mimic it so well you won't notice the difference if that's all you want, and still plays in the same weight class.
The configuration syntax isn't quite as straightforward though, and outside tool to add functionality to window managers didn't always behave as nicely for me.

  • Problems with Tiling in PhotoShop CS6

    Hello!
I am having difficulty with tiling in PhotoShop CS6.  I am trying to do a half drop repeat and a block (brick) repeat using a single image that I've manipulated with filters, etc.
When I make the pattern and then apply it to a new document, I get some strange striped coloring.  The image has been flattened.  See screenshot below:
Can anyone tell me why I am getting this strange coloration (I kind of like it, but not what I really want)?
I sincerely appreciate any help anyone can provide!  Thank you!

Did you use the Paint Bucket Tool set to Pattern to fill the layer?
If so, go to Edit>Fill and uncheck the Scripted Patterns, press Cancel and then try again.

Working alternating with iPhoto and FCE tgrying to import pictures from iPhoto into FCE suddenly all my 22300 pictures disappeared leaving empty frames. Does somebody know where the pictures could have gone and how can I get them back into iPhoto? Lothar

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • How to integrate OpenBox menu with Tint?

Having tint shorter than screen width is not an option, because it looks terrible.
    Any ideas?

Could you explain a bit more what it is exactly you're trying to accomplish.  How are you trying to integrate the openbox menu with tint?
For example: right-clicking free space on tint panel brings up OB menu.
Current workaround works (tint not stretched to screen width - I'm clicking empty space on sides of tint panel) but I was hoping for more "elegant" solution.
    According to tint manual:
    "3.7 Mouse
customize mouse action with : none, close, toggle, iconify, shade, toggle_iconify
    mouse_middle = none
    mouse_right = close
    mouse_scroll_up = toggle
    mouse_scroll_down = iconify"
Why not just use the hotkey to bring up the openbox menu?
Not being able to do everyday tasks efficiently with a mouse is a big no-no.
Besides that, combo of OB + Tint + Trayer is great.

  • Cisco DSL-Router 876W: VPN with Apple Builtin PPTP??

    Hello
I spoke last week to someone about the VPN Problems with several Firewalls and Routers. I hate it to use VPN Tracker, Cisco VPN Client or IP Securitas. I would like to use only the builtin VPN Clients of the Apple OS X.
He suggest me to use Cisco 876 Router. That VPN should support the builtin VPN Client of Apple. Has some member of this forum testet this Router and get the VPN working?
I tried to contact Cisco here in Switzerland, but they have nearly any know-how of Apple Products
    Who can help me?
    Regards
    Gérard

    Hello
We had installed the Cisco Router with the VPN Server.
It is possible to make a connection with the builtin PPTP Client of Apple. The Connection is very instable. It disconnect every X minutes.
Ferther I am not able to use all the Apple Remote Desktop funktion. So I see the ARD Client at the VPN Site. Im am able to see which Program is running and are also able to update the ARD Client.
But the Control and Show Funktion off ARD ist not working.
So this solution ist not useable to do Remote Maintanance

  • [solved] mutt with tiling window managers = bad = how to improve?

    Hi guys
I want to use mutt as my mail client. I've tested several others, but none fits me better. It has to be a cli application, because that's just the way I want it to be.
The only thing I don't like about mutt is its inability to handle resizing terminals. This is something which happens all the time with tiling window managers. Let me demonstrate with screenshots.
mutt as it's supposed to look http://www.unstucc.de/myspace/mutt-normal.png
mutt how it looks after the screen got resized. http://www.unstucc.de/myspace/mutt-resized.png
Hitting Ctrl+l rerenders mutt's interface, but this is really going on my nerves.
I run mutt in urxvt, but I also tested it with xterm, comparable result (it's a little bit better in xterm, but still not perfect)
I've been searching for this for quite a while now and I can't find ideas how to solve this.
    Any help is very appreciated.

  • Start pytyle3 with tiling enabled on boot.

    Hi,

    Thanks,

    Hi,
now I booted the system with one Solaris cdrom in the single user mode.

    # newfs -N /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0

    super-block backups (for fsck -F ufs -o b=#) at:But I did not get an alternative super-block no..
    Did I have another chance?
To run installboot just for kicks. What do you mean with this?
    To reinstall the bootblock with:

  • Server goes out of memory when annotating TIFF File. Help with Tiled Images

I am new to JAI and have a problem with the system going out of memory
    Objective:
1)Load up a TIFF file (each approx 5- 8 MB when compressed with CCITT.6 compression)
2)Annotate image (consider it as a simple drawString with the Graphics2D object of the RenderedImage)
3)Send it to the servlet outputStream
    Problem:
Server goes out of memory when 5 threads try to access it concurrently
    Runtime conditions:
    VM param set to -Xmx1024m
    Observation
Writing the files takes a lot of time when compared to reading the files
    Some more information
1)I need to do the annotating at a pre-defined specific positions on the images(ex: in the first quadrant, or may be in the second quadrant).
2)I know that using the TiledImage class its possible to load up a portion of the image and process it.
    Things I need help with:
I do not know how to send the whole file back to servlet output stream after annotating a tile of the image.
If write the tiled image back to a file, or to the outputstream, it gives me only the portion of the tile I read in and watermarked, not the whole image file
I have attached the code I use when I load up the whole image
Could somebody please help with the TiledImage solution?
    Thx

I guess oracle set SGA automaticlly while i choose default installion , but ,why SGA would be so big? Is oracle not smart enough ?Default database configuration is going to reserve 40% of physical memory for SGA for an instance, which you as a user can always change. I don't see anything wrong with that to say Oracle is not smart.
If i don't disincrease SGA, but increase max-shm-memory, would it work? This needs support from the CPU architecture (32 bit or 64 bit) and the kernel as well. Read more about the huge pages.

  • Good file-manager for OpenBox? (with icons)

I tried rox with the magickthumbnails and videothumbmails, but havent got it working yet.
I am now trying thunar, but it has dull generic icons.  Everything looks like a piece of paper.  I'm sure it'd look good if I was running XFCE.
Is there a standard/common file-manager for use with openbox?  Preferably one with icons for different file-types.

This option is available in Adobe Acrobat, not Adobe Reader.

  • [SOLVED] openbox margins with dual monitors

    Hi community,
I have stumbled to a nasty problem on my first incursion to dual monitors in openbox.
I'm using xrandr with this command (which works just fine BTW):
xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1280x800 --primary --output VGA-0 --mode 1280x1024_60.00 --gamma 1.0:1.4:0.85 --right-of LVDS
and have set a Virtual screen in xorg.conf of 2560 x 1024 pixels.
But, my laptop monitor only handles 1280x800, while my external LCD monitor has 1280x1024, so there is a virtual area under my laptop screen which i'm not using, but i dont really care about that.
The problem is that when I'm setting screen margins, so that maximized windows will respect the panels in the bottom (tint2), in rc.xml (or by obconf) the margins are applied to the virtual screen and only are practical on the external monitor wich has more pixel height.
I'm really missing some kind of per monitor margin settings in openbox, maybe there is and i haven't found it? It makes me wonder because openbox can maximize windows to a single monitor, even if the whole layout it's treated like a virtual screen, so it has some way of distinguishing between them.
I would appreciate any suggestions, thanks.

TL;DR - I'm not aware of any acceptable solution at the moment.
Basically, what you're having problems with, is the "dead area." It can really be quite a pain in the butt if window managers or other screen aware applications don't anticipate it properly. To my knowledge, Openbox doesn't support margins on a monitor-by-monitor basis. In reality, you shouldn't need to be setting margins anyway. Tint2 should be reporting itself as a taskbar, and Openbox should be respecting that.
I have dead area too, with multiple monitors, and Openbox respects both of the KDE taskbars I have running (one on each monitor). (I use KDE and simply replaced Kwin with Openbox.) This tells me that tint2 should be able to cooperate with Openbox. I remember trying tint2 a while ago, and didn't fine it adequate in a dual monitor environment (it was probably a year ago or so). tint2 would need to be setting the _NET_WM_STRUT_PARTIAL hint, and I'm not sure if it is (or if it's doing it properly). See http://standards.freedesktop.org/wm-spe … #id2507618
Also, I do know that the developer for Openbox recently got a dual monitor setup, and she's been adding additional support for dual monitors a little at a time. Hopefully with 3.5, there will be a lot more support. (Margin support for multiple monitors would be great, because it could be a good utility knife for applications that don't care about multi-monitors setups and don't set the proper hints.)
If you're capable of modifying tint2, my course of action would be to try something that works (like the KDE taskbars) and record the hints being set there. Then compare them with tint2 and try to mirror KDE's setup. (If you're a programming lacking experience with X and related nonsense, I'd be more than willing to offer what guidance I have.)
Also, I developed a panel myself (and got pretty far along) using the PyGTK toolkit... But I can't remember if I solved this problem or not. I'll try to check it out and get back to you. (I got as far as implementing a widget system that includes a task list, system tray, clock, menus... It just isn't polished very well. My original intention was for it to be a more robust PyPanel with dual monitor support.)

Using the rectangle tool to create a full browser width image, I filled it with a tiled pattern and added a drop shadow. This 80px tall rectangle serves as the background bar of my top menu navigation. Everything looks great when building in Muse CC, but when I go to preview or publish, it's missing altogether.
    Any ideas?

  • Any Experience/Alternatives with security, FALSE, if using iFrames 2 link directly 2 ShopProducts?

Hi, i have an (older) shop-account but the layout and the options to change are poor, ( it's a Modular web host for shop - there is no FTP access :-(
So now my idea is -  just from the designer-thinking - to link from a new page (same client but different host and server ) with via iFrane directly to the poducts of the shop
( one step before the cart)  I tested it and it feels looks good - so it feels you don't change the the domain.
But - its a lot of products and a lot of work --- and before i start to I want to be sure, which is may wrong, where can be a problem?
From the technical, safety, seo or any other point of view, i have now idea which problems can come to me?
No no, I don't wnat a problem, it is the only code i know , if there is a Probelm with Iframes , i have a big problem , too. Because missing any alternatives ;-/
I'm fairly new working with webdesign, but always read in older oldschool HTML forums, iFrames have a bad reputation. But why?
and if , do i have any alternatives to do???  and  is it also working with  Muse?
thanks a lot for your time and for every idea ;-)

Thank you for your helpful Summary.
very Interesting, you even mean it's a little helpful for the Seo.
So I don't see real problems with Iframes, too.
BUT I'm not deep into it and because the disliked image, i was a bit afraid about a missing knowledge, may some browser ignore iframes,
W3C or any other Internet-organization plans to ban it :-) Or whatever, which could have a massive negative impact for the shop.
The url redirection to a shop is for sure a bit confusing, But i can't change it, it is another site from another host, a special  safy shop system and already build and ready.  ( business catalyst is just for testing, but i know what you mean and in long-term planning )
so that#s why I thought, that iframes are a nice and a elegant solution for a uniform appearance. And if we're pointing that the customer is entering another safer Place for buying and for their own safety   -  i even think it's not particularly unusual. - But if a problem it's not an IFrame problem.
So even if i buy at the german apple store, (de) suddenly i have to speak english and to pay in $ , this is for real a bit scarry ...
    But I#m not apple ;-))

  • Having major  trouble with tiling

Ok I have a graphic that is on 2 sheets (combined make 11x17). Very simple graphic that I want to print. In my mind it should just print what is on aheet 1 on page 1 and sheet 2 on page 2. This isn`t the case persay. It is cuttin off I`d assume the bleed portion though I set up a bleed of 0. I was going to split my image and drag each to fit inside the sheets 'safe zones' but can`t find a way to split a graphic or text box in 2. I tried tiling and for something so simple its printing out like 6 pages and dividing the image all over the place when it should fit perfectly fine on 2 8.5 x 11 pages. I could use some help here. All i want is it to print on 2 pages so i can line them up and glue them together.

My guess from the description is that you have a spread and one image frame crossing the gutter, and that when you print the area in the middle is missing because the printer can't print all the way to the edge of the page. I get the sense that you've used an 11 x 17 frame and want to print to two 8.5 x 11 pages.
If the image is wide enough that each half won't actually fit in the printable area of a letter size sheet, there is no way, no matter how you do the tiling, to make this happen with only two sheets of paper.
Normally, tiling is done with some overlap on the joining edges, to make pasteup easier, which requires even more paper.
Since it isn't clear whether you are trying to put this into a booklet of some sort, or just trying to tile a poster or something similar, it's hard to say what to do, but if it's the poster, just set the printer to tile automatically and let it generate as many sheets as required.
The only reason to want to tile manually, in my opinion is to control the splices so you don't wind up with a seam in a critical place like someone's face. You do that by resetting the ruler zero point to the upper left corner of each tile and printing one at a time -- a real pain.
You can "split a graphic" in two by placing two copies on top of each other, then cropping in opposite directions, but that won't work with a text frame directly. You can, however, copy the text frame and "paste into" another frame to treat it like an image and use the same technique of cropping two copies in opposite directions. Tiling text can be a real exercise in frustration to get it aligned properly, so I'd rethink the design if possible.
