[openbox] External monitor setup

Hi guys,
I'm curious to know how you handle a second monitor. Coming from Gnome I was used to have some more comfort with that.
How it should be
1. I plug in the monitor and nothing happens automatically. Can this be done automatically?
2. Anyway, not a problem, I can use arandr to activate the external monitor. But how can I for example map the second desktop of openbox to that screen? That is, the first desktop should be mapped to my laptop screen, the second to the external monitor.
3. When I plug off the external monitor all previous settings should be restored, showing all my windows on only my laptop screen.
Regards

You should be able to fix this with the "<monitor>" option in the "<placement>" section. If you want the ALT+TAB dialog on the active screen, use "<monitor>Active</monitor>". If you always want it on one particular screen, try a specific number. (If "<monitor>1</monitor>" does not work, try "<monitor>2</monitor>".)

I'm not familiar with adeskbar, but it is certainly possible that adeskbar does not support multi-head setups.
orschiro wrote:3. Viewing flash video in fullscreen over the second monitor does not cover the whole screen but only the resolution of my native screen (1280x800 px). How can I run flash files in fullscreen (it's a monitor with ~1600 x... px) over the second screen?
I found this and this.
Otherwise, I get this problem too. It seems like some people believe it's a problem with the player or flash itself rather than the window manager. (Think about it---the window manager isn't going to choose the resolution at which flash displays video.) I've simply resigned to live with it and watch full screen flash on the monitor that it shows correctly on.
Also, since you're using Openbox with multiple monitors, check out Openbox Multihead.

  • External Monitor Setup Help

I was wondering if anyone knew a way that I could connect my laptop to another monitor, and then connect the laptop to my Macbook Pro, and use both the laptop's monitor, and the monitor it's connected to, as external monitors. I was also thinking I could possibly throw in my 2nd Gen iPod Touch and my iPad as even more visual space. This would be an amazing setup and a huge accomplishment for me, and I could amaze everyone I know when they come over. Just in case it's useful, the Macbook Pro is a (I think it's refurbished) 2007 version. If anyone needs more info about ANYTHING, I will gladly provide it.

Never mind. I posted this on another website and got a little bit of help from there, but I did most of it on my own. I'm using ScreenRecycler trial version (NEVER BUY IT, THERES NO POINT) to connect to my Macbook Pro to my laptop, iPad, or iPod touch, whichever I choose. I can only do one at a time and I didn't have to spend any money at all! I can also connect my laptop to my monitor or TV and add another screen into the play! The only downside is that the TV stays as Windows while the laptop is connected with my Mac, unless I drag the window to the TV and then the laptop stays as windows. It's almost like having 2 Macs and 1 PC! Thanks to anyone who even considered helping me.

  • Dual external monitor setup?

I'd like to use dual external monitors, ideally also plus the laptop screen for a total of 3 monitors, with my new 5th gen 17" MBP. I hear that USB-to-DVI options out there due have very poor poor refresh rates and picture quality. I'd like to use the ViDock2 expresscard/34 setup, which is a full fledged external video card, http://www.villagetronic.com/vidock2/index.html, but I understand it only works with MBP gens 1-4. Anybody know any other multi-monitor solutions that work with gen 5, other than poor quality USB options? Anybody know why the ViDock2 doesn't work with the MBP 5th gen?

Check out the Matrox dual head and triple head units, marc.

My suspicion is that you will need the more expensive "DP" versions to operate effectively with the new model.

  • T43 w/ Port Rep II - Dual External Monitor Setup

    Hi,
I have a T43 with the ATI chipset.  I am running it in a dual monitor configuration with the laptop LCD and an external monitor connected to the docking station.  I would like to use 2 external monitors via the docking station's VGA and DVI connectors but I can't figure out how to get the system to switch from the laptop LCD to the DVI.  Is this possible?  If so, how do I do it?
    I'm running XP.
    Much thanks for any help!

  • 2 external Monitor setup

    Hello all.
Is it possible to have (2) Apple Cinema monitors connected to the latest MacBook Pro at the same time using the new mini connection?
    -TIA

As you know, with multiple monitors, most gains in productivity result in using apps that allow you to have multiple windows open, so you can drag specific windows to different monitors. Logic, for example, does this nicely.
While you can use MainStage with two monitors, MainStage doesn't do much with multiple windows (other than those little keyboard windows, or channel strip plug-in/virtual instrument windows), and you can only have a single layout, setup, or perform window open at one time, so your choices are limited. It would be nice to be able to do a separate window for, say, lyrics, or separate keyboards, etc.

  • Would this external monitor setup work?

I have purchased this (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/152744) 23 inch samsung with a resolution of 2048x1152 and am waiting for it to arrive.
Will it work using the mini display port to DVI adapter at that resolution? Or will i have to purchase that stupid dual link (i hope not >.<)
Any ideas or help will be appreciated, thanks.

    Thankyou mate
Also, do you have any idea how it would look at 1920x1080?
Because i know that resolution looks good at 23" anyway, (think of the 23 inch ACD) but reckon itd look okay because its not the native res?
Many thanks for your previous answer.

  • External NTSC monitor setup

When I use an external NTSC monitor connected to an Apple DVI to video adaptor then to a Radeon 800XT video card I have many crashes. It seems like these are caused by the External monitor setup. I would to know what sort step up others are using for external video. And what kind of success you are having with them.
    Thanks
    Ken

I to have had the same problem, in fact, I just posted about it a few days ago. Hopefully Apple's monitoring this forum and looking at the issue. The only solution I've found is to disable the external preview, which is quite frustrating. Just a question have your crashed happened while you're working or when you perform application switching. I've only had problems when I apple-tab to another program and then do the same to get back into Motion.

  • Accessibility zoom unusable on multi-monitor setup

The accessibility zoom feature (ctrl-scoll when enabled) that always worked so well and fluidily in previous versions of OSX is now broken in Yosemite.
It works fine on my macbook pro retina's main display when there are no monitor connected, but on my usual dual external monitor setup the frame rate is so slow it makes is useless.
Does anyone have the same issue?

I just found a great workaround for the zoom and it works better than before.
The zoom defaults to fullscreen zoom and when you have multiple monitors it zooms all of them. Normally I don't need to zoom all just the one monitor that I'm working on.
Go to  "system preferences " ,"accessibility ", set zoom style to "picture in picture" and then click   "more options"  and then click "adjust size and location"  then you can set the zoom window to the size of a monitor. then when you zoom only the monitor you are on gets zoomed and is fast.
Works for me. Hopefully helps others as well.

  • How to setup external monitor?

I know it's been asked numerous times before, but I can't find the solution I'm looking for.
I'm running a dual 2.0 powermac g5, with dual 20" monitors for editing, and I'd like to hook up an external televison that ONLY shows the canvas in FCP 5.
Here's the catch: I don't want to have to go through a camera to do this.
There has to be an easy solution here... when I was in college, they had it setup that way, but they were on PC's and Premiere. Is going through a camera or a dv to analog converter box the ONLY way to do this?? How could it be so easy on a PC, and difficult on a mac. That just doesn't make sense.
I'm sick of doing color correction, then having to burn to dvd, then going to watch it on the big screen just to see that the colors are totally different, and starting the whole process over again till I get it right.
    thanks -brown

I pretty sure that the PC's at school DID NOT go through a converter box, and I'm positive they didn't go through a camera. If I remember correctly, it was just an audio/video cable that came directly out of the computer, and directly into the external monitor. Then it was as simple as setting it up in Adobe Premiere to just show the "canvas".
I just don't see why mac would make it difficult. Seems to me that it should be a top priority for them to make it as simple as connecting a cable. Doesn't every editor want an external ntsc/pal monitor to view thier stuff?? and doesn't apple get a lot of thier sales from post production people??
I don't get it. Oh well... I guess I'll put some money aside for the converter box.
Any other ideas still welcome. I read a post in hear about the "screen spanning doctor" and I think someone said they got it to work that way... but it wasn't perfect.

  • [SOLVED] Openbox - setting different dpi on external monitor

    [SOLVED SUMMARY]
After the suggestion from Max, I've got two instances of openbox running on the different screens.
the xorg.conf I used for this is below.
then I used the following addition to ~/.xinitrc to start two instances and set the dpi of the laptop screen:
    DISPLAY=:0.1
    exec openbox &
    DISPLAY=:0.0
    exec xrandr --output eDP1 --dpi 192 &
    exec openbox-session
    [/SOLVED SUMMARY]
    [ORIGINAL POST BELOW]
    Hello,
I want to be able to set a different dpi for my laptop screen  (macbook pro retina 13 inch late 2013  11,1   integrated graphics (not nvidia))
and my external monitor, as the laptop screen has a pixel density more than double that of the external monitor
    if I start openbox using:
    startx
then text on the laptop is too small,  but everything on the monitor is ok. Conversely if I start openbox with
    startx -- -dpi 144
then for the most part, things scale up nicely on the laptop, but everything on the monitor is too big.
So what I have tried to do is set the the dpi with xrandr:
xrandr --output eDP1 --auto --dpi 144 --output HDMI2 --auto --rotate right --dpi 96 --right-of eDP1
xrandr outputs a configuration that looks ok, but the display doesn't change:
    Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 3760 x 1920, maximum 32767 x 32767
    eDP1 connected 2560x1600+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 286mm x 179mm
    2560x1600 60.0*+
    2048x1536 60.0
    1920x1440 60.0
    1856x1392 60.0
    1792x1344 60.0
    1600x1200 60.0
    1400x1050 60.0
    1280x1024 60.0
    1280x960 60.0
    1024x768 60.0
    800x600 60.3 56.2
    640x480 59.9
DP1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
    HDMI1 connected 1200x1920+2560+0 right (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 495mm x 310mm
    1920x1200 60.0*+
DP2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
VIRTUAL1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
There seem to be a thousand ways to set up multiple screens, so it would be great to hear from anyone who has any suggestions about the best ways for me to approach this,
should I  set up seperate monitors in Xorg.conf,
or even seperate X DISPLAYs and launch multiple instances of openbox?
    thanks
    Mathew
    [EDIT]
on re-examining, while the dimensions listed by xrandr seem about right, the xrandr command isn't changing them, they seem to be  defaults

  • MBP retina setup 3 external monitors?

I've read a lot of places that people have been able to get 3 external monitors working though the two minidisplay ports and the one HDMI.
I have a 30" monitor 2560x1600 that I want to power from one of the display ports and two 24" 1920x1080 monitors that I'm trying to power by the display port and HDMI.
When ever I plug the HDMI port in the second display port seems to get disconnected.
Has anyone figured out a way to "trick" or configure the system so it will power the two displayports and the HDMI at the same time?

Doing some more digging it seems like this is an issue with 10.9.3 and 10.9.4 (currently on). I hope they get it fixed, as reports have said that windows drivers when running bootcamp work fine with powering 3 external displays.

    @trilby
i use my Laptop at home 95% and at work 5%
so my first choice would be to have the perfect resolution on my NEC external and when i opened a window it would display there and i dont have to open my Laptop to move the screen to see it on my external or is it so that you must have opened the laptop display to move the windows?
And when i would take it at work it would be perfect if i see it on the laptop with his resolution 1600x900
i hope i explained it well.
    @anoknusa
i change your config to this
xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1600x900 --pos 0x900 --rotate normal --output DP2 --mode 1920x1200 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal
when i start firefox it was displayes well on my external but when i opened xterm or thunar pcman i have to open my laptop and move from it up to the external do i make a mistake?
anoknusa wrote:I stuck that in a script to run when I start X; if the external monitor isn't plugged in, only the laptop display is used.  This sets each screen to act as a seperate display; I can still drag windows between them if I wish, as well as assign windows to open on one screen or the other through DWM's configuration file.  As mentioned earlier, this is also the only way (I think) to get each screen to display at its native resolution.  Note that I specify the resolution for both my T520 LCD and my external monitor, and specify their positions (my external is mounted to the wall above my desk, directly above my laptop); change those as necessary.
what has xrandr to look like for my external monitor and laptop?
and what would the script look like for me?
    external 1920x1200
    T420 1600x900
and thank you for your patience and have a nice day
ps: i know iam very close to find a solution for my problem

  • [Solved]Openbox dual monitor crashing

I have been working this out for days to no avail. I have an ATI video card not using the catalyst drivers. Dual monitors worked fine in KDE without any additional setup, and no xorg.conf. In openbox i have tried with arandr, and manual. but when i enable the second monitor its seems that openbox crashes, because whatever is on the screen at the time of enabling the monitor turns to static. I think its openbox because i still have a functional mouse cursor and has proper fucntions accross both monitors in any configuration that i try. when it crashes i have to hard reboot. when i reboot with the monitor still plugged in, both lvds and vga will display a cloned image at the same resolution which is the wrong resolution for both lvds and vga.
I have googled till there is no link unclicked, and wiki give me nothing. i dont believe that i need to set up an xorg.conf as the external is detected fine. its almost like when x applies the settings it corrupts openbox.
    anyone have any ideas?

zero_one wrote:you mean add the monitors to a xx-monitor.conf? i can give that a try but it doesnt seem that would provide the flexibility that im looking for as sometimes i use the external monitor disabiling lvds, sometimes right of, and sometimes i use hdmi to my tv set right of, to watch movies.
I mean add the monitors to xorg.conf.  Here is the xorg.conf I use with openbox (separate X display for the TV), just to give you an idea - yours will differ with ATI:

Then I start the second X display on the TV with this in openbox's autostart.sh:
    (sleep 5 && xinit /usr/bin/openbox -- /usr/bin/X :1 -layout tv -nolisten tcp) &
Thus there are two instances of openbox running.
It may not give you the flexibility, but for testing it may help you narrow down what is causing the problem and find remedies.
Also, the monitor turning to static sounds more like a driver or X issue than something with openbox.

  • X11 on a single screen in a dual monitor setup

Same problem as posed here: http://discussions.info.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2260647&tstart=0
I was excited when I read the following:
I fiddled with Apple's X11, which I'd installed on my Desktop, to no avail. Nowhere could I disable the screen-spanning behavior. On a hunch, I decided to try out XDarwin, however, and lo and behold --- a checkbox for enabling/disabling Xinerama! In addition, XDarwin seems to be better behaved than Apple's X11 when it comes to correctly sourcing some of my $HOME/.X* configuration files (e.g., I always had to run xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap manually under X11, even after putting the command in my .xinitrc).
I only ever use Xquartz(currently XQuartz 2.6.0 (xorg-server 1.9.3)) which is Xdarwin now. But I do not see the mentioned checkbox for enabling/disabling Xinerama.
Which sounds exactly like what I want to do. I want to have my macbook air(mba) to display full screen Xquartz on external 27" Dell monitor only. On the macbook screen I want to show the OSX desktop with open applications not blacked out by X11.
Any pointers to this checkbox's location would be great. Or any other way to configure this setup would also be good.
I'm not looking for solutions that keep the laptop monitor off in any way as I have seen suggested many times. This is because I want to use it to view state of other OS X apps on the macbook screen while working in full screen X session on the external monitor.
The xnest solution sounds inferior for the same reasons pointed out by Michael C. Lee in the post I mentioned above.

    Hi Andy,
    I really appreciate your help!
I believe you're correct in that I wouldn't be able to start the X server and have it only produce output on one of my monitors, as they are necessarily part of a single "display" (in OS X, at least). Barring that, however, I wanted to be able to at least keep X11 from creating a single screen that spanned both my monitors (the problem with this is that it doesn't recognize the separate monitor geometries, so large chunks of the virtual spanning screen were inaccessible, and it also made dealing with X apps that are none dual-head friendly a pain). On my linux machine, I was able to get this behavior by default (i.e., separate screens named '.0 and .1' under a single X display), and could get monitor spanning only after enabling the Xinerama extension.
Anyway, that basically gave me what I needed, so I'm a happy camper. Just thought I'd post this in the unlikely event that someone else is in the same situation. Oh, and if you're curious, the reason I needed to do this in the first place was because I wanted to run the ratpoison windows manager fullscreen --- great for dealing with ADD!

  • HP Zbook 15, external monitor connected to docking station issue

    Dear all
I have bought a HP Zbook 15 laptop and installed Ubuntu 12.04. It does not show anything on the external monitor when I mount the laptop on the docking station.
After installing the Ubuntu 12.04 and putting it on the docking station for the first time, I got this problem:
"If an ACPI driver is available for this device, you should use it instead of the native driver". I have attached the whole log file. Then, I installed the latest Nvidia driver, and restarted the machine. This time, I do not see that error message; however, I cannot see anything on my external monitor which is connected to the docking station. Can you please tell me how to fix this problem?
    Best regards,
    Murtaza

@emeres: Sorry, yes, it's an HP 2013 UltraSlim Docking Station. I figured it was the only one compatible with the notebook model I provided.
Regarding any electrical circuitry or controls... well, sure, I'm assuming there's some circuitry in there
I'll give a whirl at using that two screen setup when I get a chance. I'm not inclined to think I need to hard-code it in a xorg conf file of some sort given that xrandr finds it just fine. I'm just perplexed by why it goes AWOL after one connect/disconnect. Now that you mention it, it could be the docking station internals, as I'm assuming most folks would be using this to plug in their computer, then completely remove it to go elsewhere, and then come back to their desk. Thus, they'd be physically disconnecting it vs. just toggling?
That said, I'm pretty sure I can use Windows Fn+F4 to toggle laptop vs. laptop + "projector" (what Win7 calls any external display) all day with no issues, so I'd think xrandr should be able to do the same?
Thanks for the input and links.
