Openbox in GNOME: Only one workspace

I start gnome with exec gnome-session in my .xinitrc and the fusion-icon in autostart. This allows me to switch between compiz, metacity and openbox but switching to openbox only gives me a single workspace, despite having set 6 in rc.xml and having four in metacity/compiz. Any ideas as how to fix this?

Thanks for the replies. I first tried relogging in but that didn't work, but I read that killing the panel works and it did. Strange that relogging in didn't have the same effect. Anyways, marking as solved.

    Hi,
    I just installed Gnome but the workspace switcher in the panel is only showing the current workspace. When I go into the preferences the option to show all the workspaces is greyed out. How can I fix this?

  • After booting only one workspace on my second monitor

    I got a MAC PRO 5.1 with 2 screens connected.
    Problem after rebooting yosemite, on my second screen only one workspace is left. All others are at the first screen.
    I also can't tell applications to open at a specific screen. After reboot the screen information is lost.

    In Mac OS X, if a screen disappears -- all the items on it are moved so that at least some part of each window is on another screen so that it is not "lost" on a screen that is off. This problem sounds similar. Perhaps for some reason, your Mac thinks a screen has disappeared, and your workspaces are moved.
    If this is the case, I thought of some workarounds that may prevent that from happening:
    1) If you do not already use a "regular" user account (as opposed to an Admin account), I suggest you create a new Admin account, log in to it, and use it to demote your daily-use account to a regular account. Then cancel auto-login and endure the login screen. [You will also have to enter the Admin username and password when installing new software, but your Mac will be slightly more secure that way.]
    This moves the creation of your workspaces away from the Startup sequence, and may mean the screens are stable by the time you log in and your workspaces will not be changed.
    2) reverse which screen is the primary screen, in hopes that it (and its workspaces) will be maintained instead of dropping out

  • Conky in only one workspace in awesome

    Hello, just trying out awesome. I've got some rules defined in rc.lua to make some apps start with certain tags. I've managed to do this by using xprop, finding out WM_CLASS of the window and defining consequently the rule. However, I'm having problems with conky. No matter how I set own_window_type in .conkyrc [1], the conky window gets displayed on all tags/workspaces (still not sure what the correct terminlogy is in awesome). I've set the rc.lua rule such that it gets tagged with tag number 1, and in fact when I start it I see in the upper bar a little white square appear in the first tag (and only in that) - however the conky window is then present even in other tags.
    any hints? using awesome 3.4.10-1 and conky 1.8.1-3
    [1] I tried normal, desktop, dock, panel, override

  • Assign more the one workspace to a developer account

    I have run into a stumbling block in setting up my accounts for Apex that seem to conflict with the training class I just took
    I want to assign more then one workspace to a developer.
    On page 1-16 of the oracle class manual it indicates that you can assign more then one workspace to a developer. On page 1-16 it depicts user 'A' having access
    to Wkspc1 and Wkspc2.
    However when I login as admin or the workspace admin and I click 'create' there does not appear to be a way to assign more then one workspace to the account.
    It appears you need create the same account(e.g. dev01) under each workspace. That is you create the same account for each workspace and can give it the same password.
    So you end up with more then one account with the same name assigned to each workspace. Create dev01 on wrkspc1 then create devo1 on workspc2 etc.
    Is this correct? This doesn't seem right.

    Hello,
    are given access to only one workspace at a timeCorrect
    are created in Apex only(not db)Well Apex runs inside the DB...so yes the accounts are created in the DB, however they are only accessible (and meaningful) from within Apex. You can't login to the DB via SQLPlus using Workspace credentials for example.
    can not use a db account to login as a developerCorrect
    to access more then one workspace at time the account must be
    created seperately in each workspace.Correct
    if the applications are db account authenticated ....Correct.
    if the applications are apex account authenticated then a different user account...Correct
    Hope this helps,
    John.

  • Conky on only one desktop/workspace. is it possible?

    Hi Everyone,
    Just playing around with conky today. I am wondering if it is possible to have conky appear on only one of the desktops/workspaces. This is for openbox but don't think it would matter. I have four desktops/workspaces and only want it on desktop1. I can't seem to find a definitive answer.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

    http://conky.sourceforge.net/config_settings.html
    look at the option "own_window_type"
    Also, have a look at the rc.conf of openbox. Everything you need should allready be there, in the following section:
    <applications> ...</applications>

  • Openbox is perfect for me, only ONE thing left to do...

    well, after ALOT of googling and searching and maybe ~100 reboots ive got everything just the way i want it with my system and openbox. its been fun trying to set everything straight and when everything goes the way i want, the happy feeling you get... cant describe it
    well now on to my question. as stated above ive only got one major thing left i want to do with my system.  i want to be able to have different wallpapers on different desktops in openbox. currently im setting my desktop wallpaper with nitrogen.
    well ive searched alot on this too but havent found anything. i were more concentraiting on getting everything basic done. so with only one thing left i thought id ask the community
    sorry for my english and thanks to everyone that replies to this thread!

    wallpapoz works with openbox!
    But .. I use an ugly way:
    1. when in openbox I start gnome-panel from terminal. (then from gnome menus I have to set my custom unfinished theme because gnome can't find some icons in openbox)
    2. from another terminal I start
    $wallpapoz &
    and click "restart" in wallpapoz settings.
    3. close wallpapoz setting window.
    4. then I kill gnome-panel in the terminal with Ctrl_C.
    P.S.
    I was thinking about another alternatives:
    1. I've heard there's a compiz plugin (but because compiz was much slower than beryl on my radeon 9200 I'm not very keen to try that.) - using and activating off-screen pixmaps should work fast.
    2. write my own, but I don't see a big usefullness at the moment...
    3. don't use any wallpapers when work but sometimes enjoy (what other usefullness of them, anyway?) them with screen saver or browser or other progs.
    4. To recognize in which desktop am I - use some different background widgets like cairo-clock with different theme, bet maybe panels with different icons is sufficient?...
    5 Someone will write and I might find it later...

  • X11 dual head - want to get window manager (gnome) on one screen only

    What I want sounds simple, but I just can't get it done... Hope anyone is able to help me!
    What I've got:
    Four monitors (two at each of my nVidia graphic cards). Both devices are configured using nVidia's Twinview, giving me two virtual screens (:0.0 and :0.1).
    I can use xinerama to get one huge desktop, but this doesn't work well, as the borders between two screens of the same device are no longer recognized in this case, causing windows to always span over two monitors on maximization.
    I can also not use xinerama, giving me two independant gnome session.
    What I want:
    I want gnome to only start on one screen (i.e. two monitors), leaving the other screen blank but available. They don't need a WM as they will run nothing but a fullscreen mplayer or an xterm that will periodically output some stuff. I actually don't even need input devices for the second screen and it would be good if the mouse was restricted to the gnome-screen.
    However, I didn't manage to make gnome start on only one screen. I don't care if it's done using one xsever with two screens attached or if I can do it starting a second xserver, I just want it resolved in some way.
    I've tried to restrict gnome to :0.0 by setting the DISPLAY variable or giving gnome-sessions --display option. Both to no avail. When trying to start a second xsever (different layouts, each using one of the screens), my original screen becomes all white and on the second screen nothing happens. Any ideas?

  • How do I create a dropdown with three options so that only one is visible in a form (non-flowable)

    I'm working on a form which needs to provides three options for the user out of a drop down list. When the user chooses one option, only that subform is to be visible. Two of the three subforms are text fields, and the third subform is a series of fields which are editable by the user.
    How do i create a dropdown with three options in it, so that in each instance only one subform is visible? This needs to happen in the same space on the main form.

    Hi Nellie,
    Here is the form back to you. There were three main issues:
    In order for dynamic behaviour, like showing and hiding, the form must be saved as a Dynamic XML Form in the save-as dialog.
    While you can use a minus sign when naming objects and subforms, it will cause scripts to fail. I have changed the name of the subforms so that they now use an underscore.
    The dropdown had specified values in the Object > Binding palette (1, 2, 3), so the script needs to use these in the if statements.
    When sharing forms on Acrobat.com, the best option is to select the file in your workspace and then click Publish. This will make it available to anyone who has the published URL.
    I hope that helps,
    Niall

  • Can only change Workspace when in Standard Screen Mode

    For whatever reason Photoshop will not let me change workspaces (from top pane or from the menu bar) if I am in Full Screen with Menu Bar mode. Is there a reason for this? Am I the only one experience this?

    Haha, well thanks for the response I guess haha. I'm sure its not top priority or anything but is it a "serious problem" that you guys are working to fix or is this just something I'll have to live with? Thanks again.

  • DWM: only display workspaces with windows in them (in the status bar)

    I was wondering if anyone either had a patch or had a few hints about the source in order to accomplish displaying only those workspaces with windows on them. I am willing to edit the source (dwm.c) but have no idea where to start.

    Look at drawbar(), in this code block (line 664 in the current hg tip version of the file):
    for(i = 0; i < LENGTH(tags); i++) {
    dc.w = TEXTW(tags[i]);
    col = m->tagset[m->seltags] & 1 << i ? dc.sel : dc.norm;
    drawtext(tags[i], col, urg & 1 << i);
    drawsquare(m == selmon && selmon->sel && selmon->sel->tags & 1 << i,
    occ & 1 << i, urg & 1 << i, col);
    dc.x += dc.w;
    The drawtext() and drawsquare() calls are what write the names. The variable "occ", which is computed in the block right above, tells which tags are occupied, in the format of one bit per tag. It shouldn't be too hard to skip the appropriate ones.
    What looks harder is keeping the width of the tag display correct - if you just skip some names, there will be a gap big enough to fit the missing ones between the tag name list and the layout indicator.
    The other thing worth mentioning is that the names of empty tags are useful if you want to retag windows, or switch tags, with the mouse.

  • Xfce. Stick window to one workspace. Remove built in keyboard shortcut

    Is it possible to stick a window to a specific workspace? The stick function i have found, sticks the window to all workspaceses. Not what I want.
    Can I remove the built in keybord shortcuts? It is irritating that ALT+F1 opens the documentation in my browser(used to E-17 where it jumps to workspace 1), and also move the browser from one workspace to the workspace where i hit keyboard combination.

    Perhaps I am simply being a doofus here but isn't the point of stickying a window so that it shows up on all workspaces? If you don't sticky it then it only shows up one workspace... which is what you want?
    I might be the dofus here, but I dont se the point in having the same window in all workspaces. What I wanted was to stick Firefox and Thunderbird to workspace 1 and 2. So that I can clik on a link in thunderbird without firefox being moved from workspace 1 to workspace 2.
    Thanks for the keyboard binding tip. I did not investigate good enough before I asked, I admit that. So obvious.

  • Export users from one workspace/schema to another

    Hello,
    I need to export APEX users from one workspace/schema to a different workspace/schema. I only know how to export a sql file that combines the workspace with the users.
    In addition to that I would like to bundle that with an application package so that I will be able to deploy the entire application all at once. Is this possible?
    In an ideal world, it would be create if someone could send me "step-by-step" directions on how to package and deploy an APEX application so that everything (i.e. all database objects, seed data, application definition, users, graphics, css, js - and tell me in what order each should be created) would be in one script.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    LEH

    LEH,
    You asked a similar question here: How to Create a Packaged Application
    It's best not to start multiple threads on the same topic.
    It is 100% impossible for anyone on this forum to tell you how to create seed data scripts without seeing your schema and understanding what data needs to be seeded. Have you taken the time to read the APEX user's guide on packaging applications? I believe that it's a good place to start, as once you understand the fundamentals of packaged applications, many of your questions will likely be answered.
    As for moving APEX users, you can navigate to any application, click Import/Export, select Export, then click on the Workspace Users tab.
    Thanks,

  • Why 1: Type selected in yellow and 2: only one panel stays open?

    In Design CS4. G5 Mac. Final Tiger.
    1. I was setting some type to be force justified L/R. Several lines of centered type. Most of it, not all of it, became selected in solid yellow. I did not do the selecting. I could not find the answer in either of two ID reference books.
    I checked the Prefs several times, and the only thing I found that MIGHT relate to this is "Keeps." (Preferences > Composition > Keeps Violations/H&J Violations.) Though it says nothing about color choice nor about what it signifies. I know what pink signifies, but not what yellow does.
    2. Asked about this next problem before and was told about Workspaces and was told about grouping panels, neither answering the question as I recall. So let me try again.
    I have panel A open. It may be alone as Panel A or in a group with Panel B and maybe even with Panel C. Doesn't matter. But now I want to open Panel D. As soon as I click on Panel D, Panel A (alone or grouped) disappears. So my question is: Can I/how can I keep more than one panel open at the same time, grouped or single being 100% irrelevant? How can I keep Panel A and Panel D open at the same time as separate, not grouped, panels?
    I tried to ask clearly. My experience is it is most efficient (in Adobe Forums and in real life) to be clear about what you do want and equally clear about what you do not.  —Thank you.

    1. Yellow highlight is, I believe, substituted glyphs. Is the affected type all caps or samll caps, perchance, or non-default figures? You usually see this with ligatures, but small caps is pretty common, too.
    2. Do you have auto-collapse panels selected inthe prefs? This one would help to see a screen shot, I think. If the panels are docked, you must expand the dock to panel width or only one group (and a group can be one panel) will expand from the icon state at a time.

  • Openbox and Gnome

    I'm currently running Gnome as my DE.  I've noticed that many people run Openbox with Gnome.  What are the advantages or disadvantages of running Openbox with Gnome instead of just Gnome.
    Regards

    Openbox is just a different window Manager. Gnome has its own called Metacity that it uses. You can use one of many WMs with Gnome, apart from Openbox, Fluxbox, IceWM, JWM or any other that you can think of.
    Please search the wiki for Window Managers to get more insight into the differences between WMs and Desktop Environments.
