Openbox is perfect for me, only ONE thing left to do...

well, after ALOT of googling and searching and maybe ~100 reboots ive got everything just the way i want it with my system and openbox. its been fun trying to set everything straight and when everything goes the way i want, the happy feeling you get... cant describe it
well now on to my question. as stated above ive only got one major thing left i want to do with my system. i want to be able to have different wallpapers on different desktops in openbox. currently im setting my desktop wallpaper with nitrogen.
well ive searched alot on this too but havent found anything. i were more concentraiting on getting everything basic done. so with only one thing left i thought id ask the community

wallpapoz works with openbox!
But .. I use an ugly way:
1. when in openbox I start gnome-panel from terminal. (then from gnome menus I have to set my custom unfinished theme because gnome can't find some icons in openbox)
2. from another terminal I start
$wallpapoz &
and click "restart" in wallpapoz settings.
3. close wallpapoz setting window.
4. then I kill gnome-panel in the terminal with Ctrl_C.
P.S.
I was thinking about another alternatives:
1. I've heard there's a compiz plugin (but because compiz was much slower than beryl on my radeon 9200 I'm not very keen to try that.) - using and activating off-screen pixmaps should work fast.
2. write my own, but I don't see a big usefullness at the moment...
3. don't use any wallpapers when work but sometimes enjoy (what other usefullness of them, anyway?) them with screen saver or browser or other progs.
4. To recognize in which desktop am I - use some different background widgets like cairo-clock with different theme, bet maybe panels with different icons is sufficient?...
5 Someone will write and I might find it later...

the only way that anyone would be able to see anything at all on your phone is if they knew your apple id password, or they were looking over your shoulder

If you could say only one thing to a beginner...

I'm a beginner at video and I want to learn from the pros. That said, let me give a little history:
I'm only 23, but I've been in the pro audio industry for almost ten years now and I currently run a small recording studio and I do pretty well at it and make some pretty good money. I've got extensive audio experience with studio work, live sound, and installation. That said, I think I understand technology fairly well and so I'm hoping I'll be able to transition to video fairly easily (though I know it's going to take a lot of work to learn everything!) I'm just finishing up college (I graduate in May '09) but my school has already hired me full time. They want me to take my skills in technology, learn how to do video work, and then create over a hundred 5-10 minute promo videos for use in fundraising and admissions. They're pretty much investing a couple months worth of my salary (which isn't bad either!) in getting me trained in videography and video technology.
I'm having weekly training sessions with the Film prof at our school and he's teaching me a lot of stuff with compositing and framing and how to use a camera from an artistic standpoint.
I've spent the last four weeks reading forums here, at dvinfo, apple, adobe, and more, just trying to learn. I'll be using the lynda.com tranining videos to learn FCP, After Effects, Photoshop, and Flash (a lot of the stuff I do will also be developed on our website).
Right now it looks like they'll be buying me an HVX200A with an extra 16GB card (means I'll have two 16gb cards), a Mac Pro with FCP and some basic video/audio hardware (looking at the Blackmagic Intensity Pro for video--want to be able to use HDMI outputs to monitor on HD screen--and the M-Audio ProFire 2626 for Audio--allows me to use a lot of the pro-audio gear I already own including an ADAT HD24 for multitracking and it works with ProTools M-Powered if we decide we need to purchase that eventually.) Then I'll also be getting a good tripod (looking to spend somewhere around $1400 and I'm looking at a Manfroto head on Cartoni sticks). For lighting, I put myself through college by working construction so I already have three 1000 watt lighting trees. I can get old color films and diffusers from our theater department here at the school. I've also read (I think it was here) that hanging a shower curtain in front of the lights is a great difuser.
So I've pretty much got the equipment stuff figured out and planned out. I've been able to keep the total cost for everything under $15k which I think is pretty good. Now I just need to spend time learning the art of the trade.
That's where y'all come in: Three questions for y'all:
1. What's one thing you wish someone had told you when you got started in video?
2. What's the most valuable thing YOU would like to impart to a beginner?
3. What's one piece of equipment I haven't listed that you would like to recommend or what's one piece of equipment I have listed that you think I should reconsider?

Skills in technology doesn't make someone a skilled filmmaker. At least you are getting SOME training with the film/video professor there. But what puzzles me is you getting hired to do VIDEO work when you only have an AUDIO background.
Let me put it in this light...I know video editing and shooting. I can use an Avid and Final Cut Pro, and I was a professional videographer for 2 years when I got out of college. A school just hired me to teach audio editing and to make hundreds of radio spots using ProTools.
See what's wrong there?
If you were starting out in a lower level position, I'd understand this. But to be teaching something you don't know about, and working professionally in a field you are not skilled in, makes no sense to me. Ahhh, academia.

Well, when I entered the job market everyone asked me for my demo reel. The college didn't mention anything about this...so I didn't have one, and didn't have access to tools to MAKE one. SO I had to shell out money to rent an Avid for a couple days to make one.

Don't be afraid to work for free. This is how you get experience and a reel...and known.

conditions. Unless I just don't understand what he's
saying (real possibility there.):) It sounded to me like he wanted to wait for multiple things to happen.
CountDownLatch works fine for waiting on multiple
threads. If one thread wants to force the await() to
end, it can force the latch count to zero. Any thread
can also call interrupt() on the waiting thread (as
long as it has a reference to the thread object.)A CountdownLatch set to one can also be used to wait for one of a set of events to occur. Of course you'd need further information to determine which event it was.
The kinds of "events" can influence the shape of the solution here. Eg if you're interested in muiltiple I/O events then you need to use an I/O framework that supports a select-style operation.

Variable Data Set has only one thing but the error asks for more

I have a PSD (CS5, Win7) where I've defines 5 layers with variable names. One of them is the Heading layer with the variable named varHeading. The Data Set I'm importing is very simple in that only the Heading layer will change. I'm gone over the construction of this text file a number of times but when I try to Import it as a Data Set I get the error:
"Could not parse the file contents as a data set. There were not enough variable names in the first line of the text file."

When you say you have defined 5 layers with variable names are you trying to attach the data set, that has one column, to each one at the same time? Did you create the data set in the Photoshop Data Sets Dialog ? The error that you are getting pops up when you have defined more variables than you have in your data set.

Best for display only one option

Upgraded older mac mini to Mavericks. Previously running Lion with display at 1280x800. Now only get one setting 1024. I tried the free "Display Menu"app but same thing. Any reason for this not having more options?

Two ipods for car, only one works.

I have a car CD player which I connect my ipod mini to using a USB cable. When I play the songs, it sounds as though only half the music is being played. It misses words, instruments and just sounds weird. My girlfriend has an identical ipod (bought 6 months apart, different colour though!) and her one plays perfectly. I have changed some songs to MP3 and WAV files but still no success. Why won't it play if my girlfriend's does? I have reset it, restored it and I am using the latest itunes.

"ADF Databinding for TopLink" - only one record?

I went through this tutorial <http://otn.oracle.com/products/jdev/collateral/tutorials/9050/toplinkdatabinding_tut.html> and have successfully run it in the IDE, however, it only ever displays one record -- the paging buttuns don't seem to do anything.
The only step where I think I might have introduced some error was in the renaming of the 'untitled.uix' file -- so for a while I would up with two uix files, and perhaps my struts flow page is not right.
Should the 'browseDepartmentsDataAction' be pointing at itself?

Note that JDeveloper automatically ads tld files to your project when you select taglibs, but if you're keeping your project in CVS and didn't add those files, then they may not be present if you check out your project on another machine.
Also, we still have to copy the sessions.xml from classes/META-INF to classes/ in order for TopLink to find it.
The sealing violation is probably from either a duplication of jars on your path, or JDeveloper opened up a jar into your WEB-INF/classes directory and the class is complaining that it's not in its original jar (or something like that.)

Terminal-It is scarey, and I want to only one thing-can someone help?

I really do not want to learn about terminal. That's a whole different level, and I wouldn't even be addressing it except for one small issue. I am an amputee, and sometimes my hands are not steady enough for complex mouse or typing operations, especially when I am tired. For example, I own a mighty mouse which I like, but I cannot get my fingers steady enough to use it consistently. So for some time I have used a Logitech MX Revolution mouse with PC and Mac and it helps me. But the Mac vesrion of the software won't allow me to program a double click, something that is especially important.
Through another person's help, I found a shareware utility that handles it well, called "Steermouse". But to correct an issue with the scroll wheel, they say in their FAQ (infact the second item listed!) that a phrase must be pasted into Terminal.
Here is the line:
defaults write jp.plentycom.SteerMouse LOGITECHMX_REVOLUTIONWHEEL -int -2
It seemed so simple til I tried it without success. Therefore my request.
That was the background. My simple question is, can one of you more experienced types step me through this one paste, and save it in such a way that it operates each time the machine boots up?
If you can, It would greatly help my Mac usage, and I promise to stay out of terminal in the future .

Right, as long as it's successful in making the change, you won't see anything in the Terminal application. I'd guess it didn't work until you rebooted because the program might only read its preferences when you reboot or log into your account. Some programs will do that.
What happens if I ever need to
remove it?
Print out and save the page you got the instructions from. I'm not sure what the default values for the Logitech would be, but if you change the "-2" at the end of the command they had you use, that'll change the behavior of the mouse. So you'd change "-2" to "-1" or "-3" or one of "0" thru "12".
You should also be able to remove the preferences for the Steermouse and get back the default behavior, though it'll also reset all your other settings for the mouse.

I am a .Net developer so i need to have Microsoft Visual Studio and Microsoft Windows for my Work, but i like iPad 2 in Tablets so that i bought one, Now in a video i have seen that Citrix is such a professional Desktop and App Virtualization that it seems Microsoft Windows is running on iOS, so i want to use it but not for business and just for home use, is it possible to set it up for free?

Citrix does not allow iOS to run Windows. Citrix products are one of several ways to connect an iOS device to a system that does run Windows and allow the iOS device to take control of that Windows system. Citrix, to the best of my knowledge, does not make their back-end products (i.e. the software that runs on the system to which you want to connect) available for free; it's usually quite expensive as it's intended for enterprise use.
Citrix for home use would almost certainly be vast overkill, though. Just do a web search for "VNC". VNC is a solution for Windows and iOS that would allow you to take control of your Windows system.

Only one problem left, can't end call

Haven't seen this anywhere, both my wife and I can't end a call. Screen unresponsive, we have to wait untill the other caller hangs up.

Yep, still having the problem. This is my second fassy since September and the first one did it too. My wife is still on her first one since Christmas and hers does it as well.
I've done all of the above including safe mode. Safe mode by the way fixed a glitch where I couldn't back out of my contacts, I had to hit the home button. My wife's did not have this problem.
We have the exact same apps but hers has always run smoother than the two of mine, go figure.
I will say I have played with ALL the other phones and the fassy blows them all away!
We both have Launcher Pro free version which rocks.

Only one audio out for a speaker set that requires 3 ??

I just got my splendid MacBook pro today and I put my PC for sale simultaneously.
Switching to Mac was a charm - I'll save the details - but only one thing is still bugging me :
I've got a Logitech Z-640 speaker set. The center speaker is the one to connect to the computer (or audio card whatsoever).
Well, it has three plugs, since it's a surround speaker set.
But, my MacBook only has one (the earphone plug indeed).
So if I plug the "green" plug, everything seems to work.
I unpress the "matrix" button on the center speaker and they all work, including the subwoofer.
On my PC I used to have a small application that would "test" them (make each speaker play one by one, so you could tell that they are all controlled independently and therefore that surround sound is enabled).
I couldn't find anything like that on OSX - is there a feature like that ?
And do you think I'll still be getting surround sound effects even though I could only connect one of the three plugs ?
Any other suggestions ?
And is there some kind of devide, like a USB one, that would let me connect the three plugs ? Is it worth it ?

Congratulations on your new mac. It is a great machine.
First of all, the MacBook Pro actually has 2 audio outputs -- they are just collocated. One is the analog headphone jack and the other is a mini toslink digital optical port.
The "green" plug you refer to is just a stereo analog input. The "matrix" feature of your speaker system is just simulating surround sound. If this is OK with you and you don't want or need true surround sound that is just fine.
There is equipment available that can separate and convert the digital optical output signal into discrete analog channels, but this equipment is highly specialized professional gear. You're not going to spend $1000 to hook up a $50 speaker set.
If you want true surround sound, you should upgrade to a speaker system that will accept a digital optical input, normally referred to as toslink or s/pdif.

Using the iMac for display only?

I bought an iMac in 2008. I use it for the majority of my computing needs, and for the most part is serves my purposes for everything. One thing I would like though is more gaming power.
I have a PC tower that is not connected to anything at the moment and needs a little hardware work which I will do myself.
Since the iMac is not user upgradable, and the video/graphics card is not upgradable at all, I was curious if I was able to connect the PC tower to the iMac's screen and use it as a display for a gaming computer and disconnect the tower for regular computing.
While I'm asking, is there any external way to improve the graphics card for gaming that anyone is aware of?

...Its too bad the graphics card is not upgradeable. I'm also going to try and find out if there is some sort of external way to increase performance....
This is the inherent issue with all "all-in-ones", both laptops and desktops, both PCs and Macs. For the most part, they are not upgradable. You can replace HD and RAM, but pretty much everything else "is what it is" and upgrades are "external only." Don't hold your breath that you'll find any way to increase performance (video or CPU.)
In the long run, you may want to consider just selling the iMac and get a new Mac. A Mini or Mac Pro, both of which do not have built-in monitors so would require you to get a monitor anyway, then you could KVM it with the PC. (I have my Mini KVMed with a Dell Poweredge server, which is sitting under my desk.) Alternatively, the new 27" iMac does allow for video input so it could be used as a monitor for the PC.
