[openbox] xscreensaver can't find itself

The command "xscreensaver -no-splash &" is in my openbox autostart file. First I check that xscreensaver is running:
pidof xscreensaver
3501
It seems all right to me, so:
xscreensaver-command -lock
Nothing happens and .xsession-errors says:
xscreensaver-command: no screensaver is running on display :0.0
Second try: I run xscreensaver-demo in debug mode from a terminal, and it displays a popup saying:
The XScreenSaver daemon doesn't seem to be running on display ":0.0". Launch it now?
I click "OK" and after a few secs another pop up tells me:
Error: the xscreensaver daemon did not start up properly. Please check your $PATH and permissions.
After closing xscreensaver-demo, I can read in the terminal:
xscreensaver: 17:56:49: DISPLAY=:0.0
xscreensaver: 17:56:49: added "/usr/lib/xscreensaver" to $PATH
No errors are reported.
Then, if I check again if xscreensaver is running, I find two processes:
pidof xscreensaver
7832 3501
Since I tried even in KDE, I don't think this is strictly openbox related (and on a different PC works fine).
Does someone have a clue?

All the lines are commented (by default) because there's no need for .xinitrc if you use a login manager. I simply left it untouched.
The file is executed even when you use a LM, true, being called via .xsession - in this case you don't need to put the line that run your De/WM in it.
I did try to add xscreensaver as suggested, but it didn't work.
Another thing you could try to do is to reinstall xscreensaver. Are you using latest version?
I just updated the package, but nothign changed.

  • Firefox can't find itself on my computer!

Recently, every time I try to open a Firefox window, I get the error message
"Windows cannot find ‘C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe’. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."
I have tried searching for the .exe file as suggested and found it, both by using the 'Search' option and just opening the program folder. Even using this icon to open (rather than the desktop shortcut) causes the same error message.
I have downloaded the latest version of Firefox to both my C: drive and my external F: drive, both with the same outcome.
Any ideas how I can fix this?

  • X11 Can't find itself...

Apparently, X11 is having a bit on an identity crisis.. I just installed it off of the DVD, no updates I can see. It fails to launch, and then goes into an endless 10 second loop to restart itself. How do I fix this?
    Screenshot of Console:
    http://img61.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture1nx5.png

You might try looking at the /var/log/system.log to see if there are any X11 related errors being posted.
Do you have a *$HOME/.xinitrc* hanging around?
If so, try renaming it as an experiment. If that helps, then create your initial copy of $HOME/.xinitrc from
    /usr/X11/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc
    then modify that copy.
FYI, I am able to launch X11 from Applications -> Utilities -> X11 without any problems. I can also do this via the command *open -a X11". And X11 auto launches any time I run command that wants to display something via X11.

both are connected to iCloud for "find my phone"
Phone A can not find itself using the Find My Phone app.
Phone B can find itself but can't find A
    Phone A can find B
seems like A is not going to iCloud as it should but have turned it off and on several times in iCloud
Check several settings and made sure A and B were on the internet
    Restrictions are off
Locations are all the same on each phone.

  • Trouble with viewing font on spine of Photo book.  I can't find a way to view and edit the text which appears on the spine of the dustcover or the book itself when printed.

I can't find a way to view and edit the text which appears on the spine of the dustcover or the photo book itself.  When I preview the book it appears on the dustcover and the book, but not when I'm back in the creation or editing windows.  I've printed 4 books in a series and two spines are one font size, and two others are a different font size.  One of the books has a shortened title on the book spine.

The text on the spine will be the same text that is in the Title text box on the title page.  You can change the font and style of that text just like you change any text in Aperture. Aperture will size and center the spine text for you
If you want the content or the font and style  of the text to be different from your Title box text then you have to trick the program a bit.  Put the text that you want in the spine into the Title text box and then move that box to a place on the page where it will not be visible when printed ( Y coordinate -1.0 inches for example).  Don't move it too far away or it will be hard to get back to in order to make an edit.    Then make a new text box on the title page and put the text you want on the cover in that.  (Or make a book without text on the cover , but with text on the spine).
You are 100% correct in that you can not preview this unless you preview the printed book

  • IPhoto can not find several photos, shows icon, but not pic itself and I did not move anything

I have more then 12'000 photos on iPhoto. After the last update it shows me all pics in the small icons, but when I click on them, severals are not whown - a black background with a grey triangle opens and a "!" in the mid. I suppose this means that iPhoto can not find the data. I already looked into the database and the files are really not there. But I did NOT move them! What happened? What can I do? (I would highly appreciate if I would not have to check every single photo and reimport it again!!!) Thank you in advance for your help!

  • Lightroom can't find external disk by itself

Since uprgrading to Lightroom 2 (currently 2.2) I'm having this strange problem (this is on a Macbook Pro (OSX 10.5.6).
I keep my photo's and my catalog on an external SATAlink harddrive. Often when I start Lightroom, it tells me that it can't find my catalog and gives me the option to manually browse for it. When I select my external drive, I notice that somehow there's been added a number to my external drive's name (the current name that LR uses is 'external disk 8', where the disks real name is just 'external disk'. The pattern is such that when I'll open LR tomorrow, LR will probably not be able to find my catalogue, and when I browse for it, I'll find that LR (or my OS?) has renamed my external disk to 'external disk 9'.
Also, LR hasn't been able to locate my catalogue backup folder (which is also on the external drive). I have to manually direct LR to the backup folder each time. I guess this is the same problem.
If anybody has a clue what the problem could be, I'd very much like to hear it. It's not a huge problem to browse for the external disk when LR starts, but it's anoying nevertheless...
    Richard

    Richard-
Delete your Prefs file, always make sure your external is mounted before launching LR, then launch by double clicking on the proper .lrcat file. I'd frankly change the name of my external. as anything that even looks like a default name is a no-no in my book.

  • Can i find iWeb '09 (the programm itself) somewhere. It seems Apple doesn't sell it nomore?

I publish my professional site with iWeb '08 (the DNS is elsewhere, the content is on mobileme).
Now, since mobile is going down, I want the content on the DNS-server (or the servers from the party where my DomaineName is registered)
I can't do it with iWeb '08: it only can publish to mobileme.
It seems that this is possible with iWeb '09 (to publish it on any server) but i can't find the programm anymore.
Has Apple removed this from it's store?
Is it any where else for download available?
    Thanks!

You will need to purchase a box set of iLife '09 or '11 you need the actual DVD in order to install the latest version of iWeb

  • Can't find IMEI number on the phone. Screen has broken so I can't access the dial pad.

I can't find the IMEI number in the phone after following the instruction on how to find it. I found a number on the back of my micro sim card but this website wouldn't accept it.
The screen has SELF-CRACKED after having used it for 2 months. And yes it genuinely cracked itself. No, it was not dropped. No, I did not go swimming with it.
I'm trying to get this number so I can send it off to be repaired. For which I am told Sony do this for free for their products that have this problem. You can read about it here:
    WatchDog - Z1 Self-Cracking Phones
All I want is to send off the phone to be repaired ASAP, but insetad I'm wasting my time having to contact customer services for which none of them give me a clear answer, and have to create accounts and aliases on this site which I never intend to use ever again. It is not my fault or any other consumers fault for the majority of problems that arise in these products, it is the manufacturers fault for distributing such faulty goods. Safe to say, I never intend on purchasing Sony products again, nor recommend these to anyone.

  • Loops working but can't find them on Hard Drive

Sorry if this has been asked before but I installed some 3rd party loops that work great in GarageBand but I can't seem to locate them on the hard drive.
I've looked in the folders that have most of the loops stored in them but they are not there.
Any suggestions where they could be stored? In Garageband itself it seems these files are in a "My Loops" folder which I can't find on my Hard Drive either.

  • Time Capsule can't find it's own hard disk every week and a half

I purchased the 2 teirabyte Time Capsle and received it in the mail around the 5th of this month.  Aproximately every 11 days or so, Time Capsle can't find its own hard drive.  I have to keep going into the Airport utility and manually selecting it.  I thought this was suposed to be automatic?
    My set up:
Time Capsle is the only wireless router in my house.
Backups are set to be done to Time Capsle only
I have an external hard drive attached containing movies and things on it so i can access them wirelessly.
The network itself is password protected.
I do not understand why it is easier to backup to an external hard drive then to Time Capsle.

Because the TC and Mountain Lion is buggy.. 11 days is great.. loads of people have to do it every day.
ML has the network ability of tin cans with wet string.. every now and then the string snaps and you have to rejoin it.. ie reboot everything.

  • Safari can't find the server.

I updated to Ilife08....I went to iweb and added some pages to the site....i published the pages...I got the announce your site message...I did that....I then went to visit site and I got Safari can’t find the server.Safari can’t open the page “http://www.michaelcarlucci.com/Mickeyt” because it can’t find the server “www.michaelcarlucci.com”. I have tried everything and I cant publish anything...I tried adding a site and copying the old pages to it...that did not work...I tried changing the site name ...that didn't work....when I open Iweb...everthing is there...but when i go to publish...it will do everthing and send me the announce and visit...but when i go to visit...i still get the same message...+*ok...I give up....*+and to top it all off the pictures look aweful...they are super saturated in reds....so what i want to do is throw it all out and start over...and hopefully it will get me back to where I began...I copied everything in the site folder and put it in a file on my desk top....but this was after I had all the trouble...everythingseems to be there though...but I am not sure if I would know if anything is missing....the domain was changed from domain to domain 2...so I guess the up grade worked....
How do I throw the site away....delete everything and then start from scratch? I must have done something but I couldn't tell you what I did...I've read everything on these forums and have spent two days and a night trying to fix it...

well i bet that is a good guess....I did go there and change the name....and it has not been 48 hours yet...the only problem is that I have now published to file on my desktop.....and it worked from there....Then I published all to .mac.....i got the anounce and visit pop up...when i went to visit....it doesn't work....but when I went to the site from my file I copied the address on the web page....which is http://web.mac.com/micluc/MichaelTrower_Carlucci/Welcome1.html.....I bookmarked it and just for the heck of it I went to the last page on digital painting and changed to photos with push pins....I then published....I still get the message from the visit....but when I drop in http://web.mac.com/micluc/MichaelTrower_Carlucci/Welcome1.html... the changes where there and everything is working...have I fixed it...or have I just made it possible for me to get there....and it is actually not the right way as I can't visit the site from Iweb itself....so when the 48 hours is up and new DNS settings show up...will i be in the same mess? thank you for helping me with this...

  • Hp-mkuri can't find support-type; hp can't write data; I can't print

At work, I use an HP LaserJet 1320 over USB. This was working great - and with no particular fiddling needed to get it to work. However, I've started having some problems. I had some issues last Saturday but I thought it was a blip because it apparently randomly got over them and printed just fine. Today, however, I tried to print a 20 page PDF document using lp <filename> from the command line. The response of the printer was to repeatedly flash an orange warning light. The printer status just showed "Processing..." Three and a half hours later, the light was still going and the status was still "Processing...". Examining running processes, the lp process was running and so was pdftops. That is, hours later, it had still apparently not finished converting PDF to PS.
The log files under cups don't show anything terribly interesting except that page_log contains:

In /var/log itself, I found a whole bunch of errors in errors.log. This is a representative sample:

The last type of message fills a good many more lines. Some of the non-finding-device errors earlier are from me connecting and disconnecting the printer etc. I think. i.e. they are not why it isn't working.

I'm a bit confused by this. I don't usually use hp-systray (that I know of). That's the great thing about this printer - I just configured it all through the cups web interface with no need to use hp's printer setup tools or  to install any plugin - it didn't need one. But hp/hplip_ac.log says:
[11017]: info: :hp-systray is not running.
    error: hp-systray must be running.
    Run 'hp-systray &' in a terminal.

    And lpr.log:

Could anyone advise me? I tried searching the forums but although I can find posts on issues similar to other printing problems I've had, I can't find any which look quite like this.

I've figured out that this is happening only with certain pdf documents but I'm not sure why. (None contain pictures or diagrams or anything like that.)
Printing a different pdf today, the behaviour is still very strange, though. Basically, I printed a 120 page pdf. Initially, it printed a bit. As far as the computer was concerned, the job was successfully completed. The printer flashed its lights. I pressed a button and it completed the first 56 pages. I then sent 57-120 to the printer. Again, it printed 57-something and then, again, nothing. Job done as far as the computer was concerned. Flashing lights on the printer. In the end, it took 4 or 5 jobs to finish the document.
What's odd about this is that I usually have no problems at all with this printer and this isn't the first time I've sent it a large document.
It is almost as though the computer sends stuff too fast or something for the printer or sends more than the printer can cope with at once. So when it has finished that bit, it waits for the next bit but the computer thinks it has sent the lot and no more is sent. I don't know if that is possible but that's what it "looks" like!
