Openbox, yay or nay?

Hi, all, when I get the Internet back and can install Arch again, I'm thinking of going for a less consuming Desktop than KDE or GNOME, although I am fond of GNOME, having Ubuntu and soon UberStudent for my university work, I'm thinking of my next Arch install as an opportunity to really throw myself into the spirit of Arch being lightweight, and to take advantage of using more power-user tools like mutt for an engaging install of Arch on a part of my hard-drive, to be a challenging learning experience, without the fear of screwing my university work up.
So I was thinking of Openbox for my next install. I was wondering if any of you guys that use it have anything kind (or not) to say about it - any good extensions I should be aware of or any issues, for example some programs throwing a tantrum as GNOME or KDE is a dep. I've also heard of Gnome and KDE in conjunction with Openbox. Does this offer much in the way of graphical or performance? And finally I read a bit about it with KDM and GDM, but I'm assuming if I use Openbox on it's own then I HAVE to use startx?
Cheers,
Ben.

openbox is just a window manager. You'll need a program for wallpaper, desktop icon, panels, sys tray, etc....
On my netbook: openbox + nitrogen (wallpaper) + conky + trayer (systray) (no panel)
On my desktop: openbox + nitrogen (wallpaper) + conky + tint2
So as you can see, you can build a "DE" that fits your needs.
I've been using my openbox for the last 3 years and love it. One of these days I'd like to try a tiling window manager, but I'm busy and don't want to learn a new wm, so for the time I'll stick with openbox.

  • Converting PDFs to PDF/X-1a: yay or nay? (prepress question)

Hey, folks.  As part of my production duties for a nationally distributed monthly mag, I receive PDF ads and check them over to make sure they're suitable for print (CMYK colours, bleed, type safety, 300 DPI, etc.), for which I use Acrobat's preflight window to run a bunch of automated checks.  Our workflow involves importing each PDF ad into an InDesign-created page layout, then exporting PDFs for our printer as PDF/X-1a:2001 compliant (based on [Press Quality] PDF settings, slightly tweaked, using CMYK US Web Coated SWOP v2).
While I still (try to) check over my files thoroughly regardless, to ensure everything runs smoothly, I've been converting the PDFs to PDF/X-1a (SWOP).  While my files don't get flagged from the printer regardless of if I do this (and their instructions don't specify that I should be doing this), I find that it takes care of a whole bunch of issues I can run into.
-Can significantly reduce the file size.  Had a client send over Illustrator-created PDFs which were 81.2MB.  After conversion: 2.1MB, with no noticeable degredation in image quality.
-Converts RGB/device dependent colours to CMYK (doesn't take care of spot colours unless I specify, though).
-Takes care of issues where exporting the PDF in InDesign comes up with warnings about images not being OPI compliant.
At the same time, I've lately been questioning it, as I've been encountering a few cases in which I probably should be leaving the thing alone.
-I had one ad where the raster image quality actually took a hit, showing classic signs of JPG compression (blocking, pixellating, etc.)
-One ad actually shifted some text around.
-Transparencies are flattened to the point that they are much harder to edit in Illustrator.
That being said, for you guys, do you feel it's worthwhile to do any sort of conversion, or does it just cause more trouble than it's worth?

Thanks for the response.  Yeah, I'm a total digital packrat, so I make a point of not throwing stuff away if I have the chance.
If you got a few minutes to spare, can you check out one of the print ads I was talking about?  http://goo.gl/FBPsN (5.5MB PDF).  I used the Preflight fix, "Convert to PDF/X-1a (SWOP)" under PDF/X compliance and even though I just upgraded to CS5.5, it still shifts two characters over.
I'm wondering if it's the settings that I used (just used the defaults), but it definitely tells me that I have to watch this stuff like a hawk and that PDF/X-1a conversion is not a digital prepress panacea.  Have you ever experienced images taking a hit in quality (ie: introducing JPG image compression)?

  • Just need a yay or nay on my final build for Production Prem CS5

Just about to send the order through for my new comp so just need a yes or no from the forum experts as to if this config will work. I went with 4x Samsung f3 disks so I can raid them at a later stage when I get a controller.

  • New speakers compared to old MacBook Pro speakers. Yay or Nay?

Anyone compare the speakers from the old MacBook Pro to the new one?
    Any improvements?

WOW! If this thing HAS a subwoofer, it *****! There is very little information below 200Hz on these speakers (brand new MBP) - additionally there is very little room for a sub in it's enclosure!
    The Test:
Using FuzzMeasure, I measured nearly identical frequency responses on the left vs. the right speaker.
In other words, either your machine is messed up, or you hearing is!
I'd attach the response plot if the forum would allow it...basically it looks like a slightly rising response from around 1kHz and up (about +10dB over that range!), and below 1kHz down to around 200Hz it slopes steeply down another 20dB! Below that it's down another 30dB (over 60dB total) by 100Hz!!!
BTW, 100Hz is where many "small" speakers begin their low frequency "rolloff". On the MBP, this is where the LF rolloff ends!!!

  • 'Batteries included': yay or nay?

Opinion question: should language distributions contain a large standard library?

I think a strong standard library is important, but the keyword here is strong, not "large". One of the reasons I liked newLISP over other Lisps/Schemes was that the standard library included many practical functions, that would otherwise need to be implemented for nearly every script/application. I also like the idea of Hackage, which as Skottish points out, creates a central point of distribution and information.
A similar interesting idea to point out.. I don't know how many of you are familiar with Litestep on the Windows platform, but most Litestep installations these days include a NetLoad module, which is able to automatically fetch required modules from a central repository as they need to be loaded.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that a language should have a reasonable standard library, without being too large (no one wants to download 100mb of JDK) to keep the level of entry as low as possible, but it should be easy enough to bundle or "require" modules in a straightforward way when they're needed.

  • IPod touch refurbished? Yay or Nay?

For 429.99. You get a 32GB iPod Touch.
Is it as good as a 499.99 32GB iPod Touch?
Do they break down easily? Are they fixed right?
They're a lot cheaper then a brand new one.
    I might get one.

Refurbished doesn't always mean "fixed". When people return iPods for a refund, Apple (I believe) cannot legally sell them as "new". So they sell them as 'refurbished'. I bought my 16GB as refurbished, and when it came I couldn't really tell that it had been used heavily at all. So, from my one experience, I would say, definitely get refurbished, save some money!

  • PSCC Mavericks compatability - yay or nay for release?

Any official word on PSCC Mavericks compatability as of Mavericks release date (today)?

  • Upgrading - yay or nay?

Mac people, I have some questions regarding upgrading: I'm finally going to move from my MobileMe account to iCloud. My MacBook is old (running 10.6.8 with only 2GB RAM); my iMac is slightly newer (probably also running 10.6.8 but I think it has 4GB). My iPhone is a 3GS (I'm waiting for the 5) and our iPad is a 2 (newest - just a few months).
This will required updating to Lion (running Snow Leopard now) and I have to move to iCloud for my scheduling for work, etc.  A few questions for you:
    1) Will updating to Lion slow my older computers down any? Right now, they're not superfast, but they're working fine and very dependable. I don't want to mess with that.
    2) Do I need to update my iPhone/iPad at all? They're both running at least 5.0.0 and I don't want to mess with that if I don't have to.
    3) Any other thoughts/issues/concerns you wish to share? Like I said, I could do hard syncs more often if I have to, but I know me and I will forget.  Would those of you who've upgraded recommend I work on simply improving my memory and forget the upgrade?
    Thanks!!
OT, can anyone tell me how to edit/adjust my "products" on my sig? I tried to go in there to add the iPad but it won't let me add it to my "list" of my products. I created that list elsewhere, can't remember where. Help? Thanks again!

    1. No. Lion is as fast as Snow Leopard. However, it does use more RAM so you might consider putting more RAM in the computers if possible. Lion requires a minimum of 2 GBs, but 4 GBs is a more useful amount. More if you run a lot of concurrent applications.
    2. Your iDevices should be upgraded to the latest version of iOS which is presently 5.0.1 or .2.
    3. Be sure you repair your hard drive and permissions before installing Lion. Also, see the following:
    Make Your Own Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Lion application. After Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing Lion.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    3. Locate the saved Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
    4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the InstallESD.dmg disc image file into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable Lion installer that  you can use without having to re-download Lion.
You change your products in your Profile (under New Stuff in the upper right.)

  • Nvidia IDE driver - yay or nay?

and is there any reason/benefit for single SATA drive owners to hit F6 and install the "Nvidia nForce3 SATA/RAID driver for Windows 2K/XP?"  i know that it's possible to install the OS without doing so.

you can install the os like windows xp without it

  • Screen protector for iPad 2 yay or nay?

I've purchased a back protector from Bodyguardz and have a Smart Cover...I've had my iPhone 4 from day 1 and have had no scratches on the screen at all. I feel as though the iPad should be well protected (the back is the most vulnerable) with the smart cover...
Have any of you experienced scratches with your iPhones/iPads that could indicate a decent possibility of getting scratches on the iPad 2 screen?
I am not a huge fan of how the screen protectors feel on the front of iDevices...kinda rubbery, which is why I usually choose against them.

I think having the screen uncovered including a screen protector will make it run cooler. Just the other day I forgot to put my iPad 1 to sleep and I had the cover for the Apples case over the screen. After a few hour it was very warm!
I would guess that the glass screen is the primary way that the iPad radiates heat from the unit.

  • CoreCenter -- Yay or Nay?

    Is Core Center worth installing?
According to Central Brain Identifyer my CPU temp is 39 Degrees. I'd like to check this against other software.
Flawless so far, btw, this machine was build today and it seems rock solid. The K8N hasn't given me a problem.

I was playing with Corecenter yesterday. I saw the little arrow on the left, decided to click it. There was this auto button. Decided to click it and see what it does. I saw that it was increasing the frequency of the my mainboard. I guessed it would have a mechanism to see how far it could go or just go as far as I put in the bios that it could go. Wrong! It just went up and up till I got a blue screen. So far I hadn't had a single one of those. Now my system keeps on crashing. Even though it's not overclocked at all. I'll probably try reinstalling Windows XP SP2  tonight or this weekend. Maybe Corecenter screwed up my harddisk. I just hope it didn't damage my memory

  • Reasonable to run Arch from a CF drive?

I'm building a NAS box for my basement and the frame is going to be a Dell Dimension 2400.  I'm using 2x 2TB sata drives which will be configured in Raid-1 for redundancy purposes(losing a drive and everything on it sucks).
Anyhow, I want my two storage drives to be completely dedicated to my data so,  I've decided to investigate the possibility of installing and running Arch on a CF card connected via IDE.  I've seen mixed yays and nays online from my research, but, in the end, the Arch community has always had not only the best documentation but also one of the most knowledgeable communities I've seen.
    So, What do you think?
Oh, and I plan on running X with openbox for speed.  I'm just running a couple web daemons to download my shows.
    Thanks!

EDIT* - eheheh, I just found an interesting article about installing sickbeard and sabnzbd on freenas.
Awebb wrote: Does it have to be Linux? If you're not too shy to use BSD, I recommend trying FreeNAS. It has everything a home server needs and it is even capable of satisfying a mid-size corporate's file server's requirements. You wouldn't need openbox, it comes with a very sophisticated web interface.
Its going to need to be able to run
    1) Sickbeard
    2) Sabnzbd
I did briefly examine freeNAS on their website.  seems nice and although I know nothing about freeBSD, after moving through various linux distros and then finally successfully installing and using Arch, I'm sure I could figure it out.  Actually, originally I planned this project in a way that would make this machine a standalone NAS box using freeNAS.  It wasn't until a couple weeks ago I decided that if I did that, it would mean that I would still need some machine to stay on 24/7 which would run Sickbeard and Sabnzbd to supply video content to the NAS box.  This defeats a portion of my purpose in that I currently have everything running and stored on what is more of a gaming machine with a large PSU and I'd like to save the power and not have that machine run all the time.
So, the idea was born to just build a box in which its primary function is to store media however it does have an OS for the purpose of running these two web servers so that it can be a lone machine.

  • How do you merge MTS files on import that were split during recording?

Not sure if this is doable in Adobe Premiere Pro or not... and I haven't had loads of luck yet finding an answer on my own.
If I record a long event to an SD card, and for every 2GB it splits the file, how do I then import these clips into Premiere as one file with no cuts?
In Final Cut Pro, it's pretty straight forward when doing this, it automatically reads the information on the SD card during Log and Transfer, and merges files that were really one single cut. And then you simply import the single file, as opposed to multiple files with lost data between clips.
Is it possible in Premiere? Good grief, I hope so.

Thanks guys! I was thinking I had done this before, but we must not have copied enough of the folder structure of the card to get the desired result.
When we get a chance, we'll give this a shot--copying all the content on the card--and then I'll report back a yay or nay.

  • Provisioning Calendar to a user causes them to lose their local calendar

    Hi,
Does anyone know of a workaround for the following situation?
    - After provisioning Calendar to a user who previously was using an Oracle email account through the Connector, when opening up the existing profile in Outlook (after entering the Calendar server details) their previous local Calendar, Tasks, Notes and Contacts are lost.
    - I realise that you can export them to a pst file but that has to be done manually and is not a realistic solution for us since we have a large number of users in this situation (i.e. we would require an automated fix).
Yay or nay woud suffice :)
    Cheers,
    Damian

Surprisingly, this morning all calendars showed up in my iPhone. Apparently there is a delay.
But now there is another issue with the error:
"The server responded with an error.
Access to “event from years ago” in “the second added calendar” in account “local” is not permitted.
    The server responded:
    “403” to operation CalDAVWriteEntityQueueableOperation."
[Ignore] [Try Again] [Revert to Server]
Each event starting with the beginning of that calendar (years ago) seems to generate an error. It will take a day to click on Ignore for all those events.
Will ask this in a new thread. For now the issue this thread is about is solved, thank you. I also updated my profile, except for my iPad. No 'edit' option next to that one. Strange.

  • Login screen before the actual application in an applet.

    Hi all,
I'm really looking for a tutorial or something but I haven't managed to get the wording right in my google searches.
I have an applet that is communicating with a server. Before getting access to the applet as such I would like a login screen. This is not there for the purposes of security but rather which server to work against.
I'm having a bit of problem with the GUI - what would be the best way of doing this?
When you hit the webpage and the applet loads there will be 3 test fields and 3 input boxes - one being a password box. and finally a OK button.
The OK button will call a function I already have that will verify that the credentials are OK and pass back a yay or nay - if I get a nay I want to stay on the login page.
If I get a yay - and this is where I don't know what to do. I want a complete GUI redraw of the new components.
I have tried to put all components into the one window and hide-and-show them as required but this just turns into a complete mess. I have the second window already - and I'm quite happy with it so I really want a brand new login window and switch from one to the other without having to resort to the messy hack I'm currently using.
I'm sure I'm missing something pretty basic here so if someone could please guide me towards a tutorial I'd appreciate it.
    thanks,
    Dan

That's exactly what I was looking for.
    thanks!
