OpenCL / GCD and new Mac Pro's HD 5770 and HD 5870

hey!
considering to buy a new MacPro but I can't find any information if OpenCL and Grand Central Dispatch is supported by those new cards (HD 5770 and HD 5870). It seems that ATI Stream isn't that Mac friendly?!
Thanks for your comments!

A couple things -
1. I know you said you don't have any money for more drives, but I would not bother using your 160 as a boot drive - why cripple the mac pro by putting the OS on a slow drive? The new mac pro comes with a 1tb WD Black by default... The Current generation of 1-2tb drives are probably 3x faster than those old 160's. Even the green drive will be faster.
2. If you make money using aperture, using an SSD to store the OS and library on will pay for itself in one job. The OWC 120 SSD has the most impact of any aperture upgrade I've ever made - it is a substantial difference. In fact, when I got my new mac pro, it only took me 3 days to pull the SSD out of my macbook pro and put it in the mac pro - after using an SSD, using any traditional media based HD feels like going back to dial-up internet - it was that noticable and I couldn't take it... Opening a 30k image library (all referenced) took 18 seconds on the laptop drive, on the SSD on the laptop it took 1.5). I put the SSD in the optical bay and use the stock 1tb drive it came with for storing the referenced masters.
3. You'll gain some speed benefit (and maintainability benefit) from using a referenced masters setup and storing your library on a separate drive from the raw images. Since you have room for 4 internal drives, (or more if you use 3rd party brackets or mount a drive in the optical bay) I'd definitely consider it. It makes a raid setup sort of not make a lot of sense... Since ideally you'd want off-site backup anyway -
4. I was in your same boat when I got my first mac pro, I had to decide what to do with all the legacy drives... For me in the end I decided that time was money, and the time it took me to move stuff around across my collection of 5 hard drives was not worth the cost of just buying a few new 2tb drives (for around $120 US, and they are fast). I understand this may not be everyone's case -

  • Basic 3D effects and New Mac Pro

    Hi
We are running Premiere CC on the New Mac Pro.
We use a lot of Basic3D effects in our editing in Premiere.
After we changed our machine to new Mac Pro (black),
whenever I try to render the Basic 3D section or export the video that
has the Basic 3D effects, the computer crashes.
While previewing, it gives me some digital noize looking like
the software is having problem processing the video.
How can we solve this problem?
The premiere crashes without any warning.
I can force quit the software.
The only way is to restart computer by hitting the power button.
I restarted the new computer numerous times.

    Hi Vinay,
    Here's the specification:
    [Mac]
    New black mac pro
    Processor  3.5 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5
    Memory  32 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics  AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9.2 (13C64)
    [Premiere]
Premiere pro CC Version 7.2.1 (4)
The type of media I'm using is Avi and Apple ProRes 422.
The effect I'm using is Basic 3D.
I had to restart my computer more than 10 times while I was exporting the sequence by hitting power button.
I finally went in to Project Setting and in General,
I changed the Renerer from OpenCL to Software only, it got stable.
So I guess is that the solution?
Is there other way to solve?
    Thank you.

  • After Effects CC and new Mac Pro with FirePro D700

    Hello
I'm about to purchase a new Mac Pro, 64GB RAM, SSD 512, Two AMD FirePro D700. Working with post-production software basically use Adobe After Effects CC, my doubt is whether the normal After Effects continue working on this new machine. If it is fully compatible with this video card and if all resources will have a better income. And what can you tell me about the Ray-Traced with these video cards.
    Thank you.

    • Adobe does not support AMD cards with their ray-trace renderer, and are unlikely to do so in the future.
    • Cinema 4D Lite, included with AE CC, uses the CPU, not the GPU, for rendering.
    • The third party plugin Video Copilot Element 3D is GPU dependent, and they have pledged support for the Mac Pro display cards.
    • Adobe has hinted at substantial improvements to AE multi-threading efficiencies in a coming release.  The implication is that more CPU cores will be better utilised in the future.
I will be buying a new Mac Pro soon too.  What the above tells me is that After Effects will continue to be best served by faster and more multi-cored CPUs, rather than better GPUs.  For my money, I will stick with the cheaper D500 GPUs, and get a better CPU option.

  • LG Monitor and New Mac Pro -- Colours out of Whack

I have an LG L226WT and a 20" Apple Cinema Display connected to a brand new Mac Pro.
Both monitors (in the same configuration) were running on my old PowerMac G5 before.
The Cinema Display works fine, colours are good, so is light etc.
The LG first had ghosting (severe at that) and this morning the colours are totally out of whack. Looking at some photos I had taken a week ago and colour corrected on the G5 now look like a child painted them (on the LG monitor, on the Cinemadisplay they are fine).
It's not the graphics card either. If I take a screenshot on the LG and look at it on the Cinemadisplay the colours etc. are correct, but the LG is right now pretty useless to me. I tried to calibrate it but the end result is pretty much the same, it just does not seem to want to play nice.
I don't think it is the DVI cable, as it is securely screwed in and in the same location as on the PowerMac, turning the monitor off / on seems to resolve the shadow problem but not the colour issue.
Anybody have experienced this? Any tips outside of trashing the LG and buying a new screen?

The ghosting issue is still one when I first turn the computer on. I found that I have to turn the monitor off and on and it resolves the issue.
I also found the source of my colour problem, it comes down to the LG "resetting" itself to some "automatic improvement" or whatever you want to call it, which completely messed with the tones. After I turned that "feature" off it worked well, but man, that took me three days to figure out.

  • Premiere pro cc and new mac pro 2013

There is so much being written about Adobe CC (Premiere Pro) not working well on the new mac pro that I just want a final clarification from Adobe:
    1. Does Premiere Pro work well on the new machines and is the software set up to make use of the new machine elements- like dual GPUs etc??
    2. If not is this in the pipeline for Premiere Pro CC updates and any estimates on when?
    Thanks
    David

You do realize that, for the most part, this is a User forum, not a Support one?  We have participation from various Adobe employees due to good will more than anything.  They don't and won't share road map stuff with us until they're ready to announce it to the whole world.
I think you're asking the wrong question on the wrong forum.
Pr CC and AME CC are both set up to make use of the dual GPUs on the new Mac.  Several of us have already shared our experience with CC on the new Mac Pro; for the most part it's very favorable.  A few folks are still having some difficulty with it; hopefully they've opened support cases with Adobe to get that straightened out.

  • Bootcamp and New Mac Pro

So I had bootcamp running fine with mavericks, windows 8.1, on my nMP.
After installing Yosemite, when trying to boot into it it would crash.
    So I tried reinstalling...
I've tried everything, first I just erased the partition, created a new partition (MS DOS FAT), and created a Bootcamp installer on USB from ISO.
When I get to the installer.... It won't install on any partition.
I tried removing all the windows partitions with the windows installer... everything except for EFI, OSX Primary, and Recovery... Creating a new partition from the unallocated space and formatting it.... it creates a new MSR  partition, a system partition, and a windows primary... the Next button lights up... I click it... it says "Windows cannot find a partition or create one"
I even tried starting fresh completely. Saved an Image of my OSX installation, completely formatted the drive, put the image back on, so that there was only one partition, so I could let boot camp assistant create the bootcamp partition, like it likes to... same story...
I've tried everything I can think of, no matter what I do, windows "cant find a partition"
I've tried several different versions of windows 8.
8, 8.1, 8.1 Pro....  real OEM versions, a cracked version.
    All the same story.
    Anyone else having this problem?
Anyone with a New Mac Pro (Late 2013) able to get Bootcamp, and Yosemite on the same machine?

    1. Are you trying to install via EFI boot or the traditional BC MBR method? MSR/MSD are EFI-based constructs.
    2. Can you the output of the following terminal commands?
         a. diskutil list
         b. diskutil cs list
         c. sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0
         d. sudo fdisk /dev/disk0.
    3. W8.1 EFI installation on the nMP should work. It is normally done using a "Free Space" partition, not a FAT partition.
    4. Do you have any external storage attached to the nMP when installing Windows on the internal disk? If yes, they should be removed till the installation completes.
    5. Using a USB3 flash drive will not work. You need a USB2 flash drive.

  • Just got a new mac pro - flashing question mark and more...

I wonder if anyone can help me solve this problem. i just bought a mac pro, turned it on and a flashing question mark blinked on the screen. i got on my mac book to search apple.com for the problem and it said to boot with the install disk and hold the c key. i did all that and now i cannot take out the disk. i'm still unable to select a startup disk either. i currently have a mac g5 and loved it but it is old am really surprised with having this problem. can anyone help?

If it's new and it does that, it's very likely a loose component. If you feel comfortable doing so, open the case, and make sure that the RAM is firmly seated in its sockets and the drive cables firmly connected to the drives and the circuit board. Also check the power cables to the drives.
Depending on how the computer was handled in transit, these things can get jostled loose, and loose RAM or cabling will give you what you observe.
The other possibility is an outright hardware fault. Though rare, there's always hardware that resides in the tail of the service-life bell-curve due to some manufacturing / material defect. Apple is historically excellent about replacing same. You need to contact AppleCare or bring the unit to an Apple store or authorized repair center.

  • KVM with DVI and mini DP compatibility? old and new mac pro to one monitor?

i need to buy one of these to replace a belkin model that i think may have failed (either that or it is my video card) and i just started to wonder if i should spend the money on a KVM switch instead. basically i am buying this converter to TEST if my current adapter is not working.
    http://www.kanex.com/c247dl
i am assuming that getting a KVM switch will be able to test this in the same manner but also give me the added option of /switching/ between my 2006 and the newer 2012 model.
i am having a bit of a hard time navigating the IO gear website and my terminology searching may not be optimal either. can anyone help me with this please? presumably i need a "mini DP and DVI KVM switch"?
    THANKS

OK. so for an extra hundred dollars (compared to buying a converter) i can get this 5770 video card that has two mini DP ports and which will be compatible with my cinema display is that right? then i am guessing i can buy a mini DP KVM switch if i decide to keep the computer (assuming it solves the video problem). does that sound about right?

  • Premiere CC and Media Encoder crashing new Mac Pro

Since installing CC on my new Mac Pro (Late 2013) Premiere and Adobe Media Encoder have been continually crashing my system.
At first, my comp would freeze and I'd have to hard restart, then it switched to rebooting on in's own. This would happen 10-20 times a day while editing.
This began shortly after I synced settings from a previous version of PP but since I've installed new RAM; reinstalled CC/PP; reformatted my HDD and reinstalled Mavericks, CC, PP; and have not synced my settings. I've also tried editing multiple projects of different sizes with different media types -- all are experiencing the same problems.
When I edit the same projects on my MBP, everything works fine.
Recently, I have disabled GPU acceleration in all of my PP projects and that seems to have solved the problem.
My office received 3 Pros at the same time with the same hardware configurations and software -- I am the only one experiencing this problem.
    Here are some specs:
    Late 2013 Mac Pro
    2.7 Ghz 12-Core Intel Xeon E5
    64 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 ECC
    AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB
All drivers, CC, and software is up to date.
So what do I do now?
    Any help is much appreciated!

  • New mac pro freezing and crashing

I got a new Mac Pro two weeks ago, and it's been great, much faster than my macbook.
However in those two weeks, i've had 7 freeze and crashes now, that's more than in years of using MacBooks.
Symptoms are: the screen just freezes, nothing moves anymore, not even the mouse. The sounds hangs, and after a few seconds the mac shuts down and restarts.
On four of these crashes, i saw a red light from the bottom of the tower.
    Anyone else experienced this?
Does anyone know what the red light means?
Any input to find the source of these crashes and what to do next is welcome.
    Specs:
Mac Pro 6.1 (the round one)
    Quad core
    Dual D300
    12 Gb memory
    OSX 10.10.1

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • Premiere Pro CC running slow on my new Mac Pro

I just upgraded my system to the new Mac Pro(Darth Vader Helmet) and its running slower then my 5 year old tower!? Ill take 15-20 seconds to save a project(small project). The playback is still a bit jerky. Overall it just seems to be lagging a bit.
    Here are my comp specs:
    OS 10.9.2
    3GHZ 8-Core Intel eon 5
    64 GB 1867 MHz DDR2
Does anyone have any idea why Premiere isnt blazing!?

Thanks, Jason, that's what I was wondering about.  Generally, people post to forums when they have problems.
Yep.  That's usually what happens.  My review will be centered around my usual "benchmark" of editing 2 AVCHD inputs, one PiP'd into the other, synced with an external audio source, and then exported to an h.264 MP4.  CC on my current Mac Pro (modified dual 3.46Ghz Xeon, 48G, nVidia GTX570) takes that task about 1/2t, if t = length of video.  Which is pretty damned good.  I'm hoping the dual GPUs will help scale that export task down a bit more.  I don't expect it to hit 1/4t, but.. hey, maybe I'll be surprised?
I make about 60% of my living from Pr, and the rest from Ae and other apps (mostly Adobe).
Given the lack of CUDA, at the moment, I don't expect the new Mac Pro to be a stellar performer with Ae specifically.  I assume that Adobe is working on OpenCL'ing Ae as much as they possibly can.  But from what I understand, it ain't there yet.
(I'd need a TB monitor and PCI extender, too).
I can understand the need for the PCI extender, but why the TB monitor?  I'd in no way even remotely consider one of those, just given how ridiculously priced they are.  There's no need for one.  Does your display have a DP input?  You're all set.  No?  It has HDMI instead?  Still all set.  It's dual-linked DVI that becomes problematic.

  • Two users on new Mac Pro?

Hello, I am considering a new Mac Pro.  My wife and I both have separate Mac's now.  My question is with the new Mac Pro, can I have two user accounts (hers and mine) on the same machine that we can use at the same time?  More specifically, this would include two different monitors, two different keyboard/mouse set ups, etc.  We sit on opposite sides of the desk, but I am considering the Mac Pro as a central unit for the both of us.  We are usually in the PC room together and doing whatever we do at the same time.  Thanks!

Using the same Mac at different times is really simple -- just add another account and log in as one account or the other.
Using the same Mac at exactly the same time is very complex to set up. It involves using Virtualization software to simulate a second machine running on the first machine.
I recommend you NOT do that. I expect what you are doing is not CPU or Graphics intensive and you would be better served by having two more-ordinary Macs that are independent.

  • Downloading cs5 on new mac pro

I am trying to download the trial of cs5 to my new mac pro.  I downloaded and installed the newest flash and Adobe Air, yet when I click to install the download manager nothing happens...?

Do you receive any error messages?  Which version of Mac OS are you using?  Are you able to sign into the Adobe Download Assistant?
Alternately you can utilize http://forums.adobe.com/thread/981369 to download the install files directly.

I got a new Mac Pro today from Apple and have been having major problems with it.
The OSX installs ok and i get through to normal screens etc.
the problem arises with the installation of the Apple Intel Security patch. on restart I get the "your need to start your computer" etc. Which normally means a kernal problem.
Every time ive booted or restarted the computer I get the same.
Ive tried booting it from cd no good. Ive tried safe boot - No good. Apple help desk - Useless.
Have done a disk utility check off the CDcd, all ok so it could be software related. Or it could be some hardware problem

  • Looking for Thunderbolt 2 RAID Array options that can match the new Mac Pro's quietness -- or at least come close!

Maybe it is too early to talk about anything beyond the Pegasus2 Series (http://www.promise.com/promotion_page/promotion_page.aspx?region=en-global&rsn=1 00) when it comes to Tunderbolt 2 storage options. Looking for something on the order of 8 to 12 usable TB of redundant storage or possibly a JBOD option of 4 bays. This is coming close but I do not think it is Thunderbolt 2 (http://www.g-technology.com/products/g-raid-thunderbolt).
Either way -- looking for users experience not only on usable Thunderbolt 2 solutions but more importantly noisiness. I want to upgrade my existing Mac Pro to one of the new ones and I have found the old one to be nearly unnoticable in a quiet desktop environment. Would love to find the same peace and quiet when migrating to the new form factor that is going to need external storage to match what I have been used to inside the old Mac Pro.

Not your quiet storage, but then I would put it in a cool closet or small room off to the side :-)
http://www.macgurus.com/store/Item/ARC8050 ( I was assuming but maybe not, that it would support RAID6 which is always preferable for larger arrays. Seems to have most features you want for 8 drives). MacGurus "Burly" are never quiet but they are rugged and well tested.
Migrating storage will be a concern. I don't like the noise from my older SATA OWC dual-drive metal enclosure though suppose to be 'acceptable' unless they have improved the fans they are out for me.
    OWC for Thunderbolt products.
Helios enclosure (the new dual-slot Helios PCIe chassis)
… moving various hard drives into Thunderbolt cases
    USB3 hard drive enclosure.
For those without eSATA enclosures, a simple eSATA to USB3 adapter might do the trick.
USB3 is plenty fast to house two hard drives.

Available now starting at about $430.
