OpenDNS in the UK

Is anyone in the UK using OpenDNS successfully with Apple TV (and iPhone/Touch) for YouTube?
We've got workarounds for the iPhones and Touch using m.youtube.com through Safari rather than the native YouTube app.
We can access YouTube from all our Windows and Mac desktops and laptops - no problem, but if we try to access it from Apple TV, we get the message "An error occurred loading this content. Try again later."
I really want to use OpenDNS to protect my kids from adult content when they're using their laptops and iPhones unsupervised.
Any suggestions? Any domains to whitelist?
Thanks

  Hello CranleyWindy ,
I am in the U.S. and am having the same trouble with OpenDNS and YouTube app on the iPhone.
It has nothing to do with your location, but it does have to do with the address YouTube app uses.
I had the same problem with the imdb.app and to fix that I had to allow app.imdb.com to my whitelist in the
OpenDNS settings. I came here to see if anyone had figured out what web address the Youtube.app uses.
I will do my own footwork and sniff the packets on my network to find the web address that the YouTube.app
uses. And I will return to give you an answer. I usually do not answer anyone on forums, but I do see that  the
only people who chose to answer you gave some type of negative feedback. And both of those people
sound like they either do not have a clue, or at first did not fully read your question.

  • "Safari Can't Find the Server" is chronic in Safari under Snow Leopard...

    Since moving to Snow Leopard (or perhaps it is just an updated Safari in SL and otherwise not related to SL??) when my Mac starts up from sleep with Safari being already open, I typically find a blank message with "Safari Can't Find the Server"... And just clicking on pages, I sometimes get that same message. Sometimes I get the spinning gear (for way too long) and I've learned to stop it and just click the same link again and more often than not, it opens immediately the second time...
    Any ideas??? Is this a bug that Apple needs to fix or do I need to do something to Safari (or something else) to fix this problem???
    thanks... bob...

    Whoa... Now I'm really confused... When I go to my System Preferences, then Network, highlight Airport, then click on Advanced, then choose the DNS tab, all I see under DNS Servers is the internal IP address of my Apple Router (10.x.x.x).. And next to that under Search Domains is hsd1.ca.comcast.net... And that is all there is... And I didn't set any of that up... When I bought my Apple Extreme Router a couple years ago, I was so impressed because I came home, plugged it in, basically said "GO" and the router set it all up and just worked... And I'm pretty sure (though not positive) that the Router put the 10.x.x.x in that preference panel, in other words, pointed to itself for DNS services...
    This is effectively saying that the DNS configured in the router will be the default.
    So help me understand... If I change the DNS settings on the mac from 10.x.x.x to the OpenDNS values, the router would still have the Comcast values in it??? How does that work??? And if I only change them on my mac, then the rest of the computers on my home network would still be using the original Comcast DNS servers as established on the router, yes??? I mean I think that would have to be...
    If you change your Mac, that is what it will use. Other computers will use whatever
    they are configured to use.
    See my confusion??? Again, I know only enough about Network settings to know that if I click a wrong button I could make a lot of trouble... So I don't move until I understand what at least a little more than clearly I know now...
    So how do local (mac) settings for DNS play (or not) with DNS settings up at the router level???
    The local settings should override anything else since that is what will
    be used first. They have no interaction with what is at the router level.

  • MacBook can no longer connect to the Internet in anyway

    I have a 2007 MacBook which has always connected to the Internet with no problems until the other day I turned it on and could not connect to the Internet.
    I have tried Wi-fi and Ethernet and it says it is connected yet when I open my browser (I have tried safari and chrome) it says it cannot connect to the server or, with chrome, the connection attempt was rejected.
    I have tried this on my home network and also at work and it is the same.
    I've checked my settings against other discussions on the forum and tried things like flushing the cache but no luck!
    Please help!
    Thanks

    It is possible that your domain name servers are not functioning. Try using OpenDNS - enter the following in your System Preference > Network > DNS Servers.
    208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
    Best of luck.

  • Cannot connect to the net after installation

    Hi All:
    I tried to install and work with Archlinux today but was not successful at all.
    I downloaded the ISO image of archlinux and burnt it to a CD (Archlinux-i686-2007.05-Duke). I tried to install the distro to my Compaq presario 700AP laptop (AMD Duron/128 MB RAM) Installation went smoothly and then the problems began. I coud not get networking to work. Here are the contents of the /etc/rc.conf file (networking section only given here):
    <--- contents of /etc/rc.conf ------------->
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    eth0="eth0 192.168.1.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255"
    INTERFACES=(lo eth0)
    gateway="default gw 192.168.1.1"
    ROUTES=(gateway) ......................."I removed the ! sign to activate the gateway"
    <-------/contents ------>
    <--------- contents of /etc/resolv.conf ------------>
    and in the /etc/resolv.conf, I have
    nameserver 208.67.222.222
    nameserver 208.67.220.220
    search opendns.com
    I typed opendns.com since I have these dns addresses from opendns.
    <-------------
    When I ping my nameserver (208.67.222.222), it puts out several lines of messages like:
    64 bytes from 208.67.222.222: icmp_seq=55 ttl=252 time=284 ms
    Likewise, when I ping default gateway, I get several lines of messages like:
    64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=128 time=1.62 ms
    Yet I cannot ping google (http://www.google.com), and the error message is: "unknown host", nor can I use pacman to update packages from online repositories.
    What am I doing wrong? I have followed the networking guidelines and installation guidelines from the websites.
    Do I reinstall archlinux? I am lost.
    Best wishes,

    Thanks for the advice, but I still am not successful and I cannot figure out why.
    Dear All:
    Thanks for all your responses, but I still cannot connect to the Internet and this is a strange problem.
    I use a broadband connection, provided by India's BSNL broadband service, using an external modem (Huawei Corporation; SmartAx MT882). The internet service has provided me the following information:
    IP Address: 192.168.1.10
    Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    Default gateway: 192.168.1.1
    DNS servers: 218.248.255.145
    DNS server(2): 61.1.96.71
    In addition, I use opendns and the dns server names are:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Here are the contents of my /etc/rc.conf (networking section):
    HOSTNAME="maurine"
    Io="Io 127.0.0.1"
    eth0="eth0 192.168.1.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255"
    INTERFACES=(Io eth0)
    gateway="default gw 192.168.1.1"
    ROUTES=(gateway)
    Contents of my /etc/resolv.conf
    search maurine.com
    nameserver 218.248.255.145
    nameserver 61.1.96.71
    nameserver 208.67.222.222
    nameserver 208.67.220.220
    If I try using pppoe -I eth0, it waits for some time and then returns a message "timeout waiting for PADO packets"
    If I "try /etc/rc.d/adsl start", it returns [FAIL] after some time.
    This has never been a problem with my ubuntu or windows installations before, I could easily connect to the web.
    What should I do to make sure I can connect to the Internet?
    When I ping 192.168.1.1, it takes me to my modem page and from there, when I run the diagnostics, it returns everything ok.
    Where may be the problem and what do I need to do to resolve this problem?
    Thanks in advance,

  • Comcast & OpenDNS hijack Browse By Name

    This thread has more details about Google's Browse By Name
    https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/790755
    Every now and then I support friends/family/clients that are on Comcast or were Geek Squadded into OpenDNS. I try to keep my clients on Firefox for it's robustness and security.
    There is a growing problem with both services, they hijack Firefox's Browse By Name integration and insert the query into their own search engines. Its more of a hassle/nuisance, but it just doesn't sit right with me.
    I found an OpenDNS thread on this issue- http://forums.opendns.com/comments.php?DiscussionID=158
    Any thoughts on how to bypass the evilness when having to work on both networks?

    It's technically not a lookup failure, I used the word hijack because it's Comcast and Opendns stealing the Google BBN searches. I've witnessed DNS hijacking of hacked websites, it's not pretty.
    Depending on where I am, it may take some time to modify DNS settings on a computer, whether it be because of admin lockdown, virus, user error, or some strange unknown bug...
    Sometimes I am talking to people over the phone without visual aid from Teamviewer. So it's much easier to tell them where to go in Firefox to fix the search rather than explain in detail how to change their DNS settings.
    So, how do I configure the Fox to force BBN? (no matter what DNS server I'm connected to)

  • OpenDNS IP Address Mismatch

    hey guys,
    Yesterday i enabled the BT parental controls as I wanted to try the filters out. Did not really like it, because it didn't allow me to also use OpenDNS at the same time. So this morning i permanently removed BT parental controls, but it is still not allowing me to use OpenDNS.
    My OpenDNS updater shows the following message:
    'Your OpenDNS filtering settings might not work due to DNS and HTTP IP address mismatch'
    I will be very grateful if someone could help me.
    Edit: I am using BT home hub 4
    thanks.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Perhaps the updater agent is being blocked from accessing the OpenDNS server? Try a different updater like Marcs Updater, which I have used.
    http://updater.marc-hoersken.de/
    The normal updater does use a special API, and an odd port number, as I discovered when I forgot to open a port on my outgoing home hub 1 firewall, which is user controlled, unlike the later home hubs.
    Also, have you tried forcing the updater to update your IP address
    Have you restarted the home hub to force an IP address change so that the routing avoids the DNS intercept, and to clear the hubs DNS cache, and then restarted your PC?
    There may be more solutions on the OpenDNS forums.

  • OpenDNS DNS address always overriding router DNS

    Hi.  I have used openDNS in the past.  This works fine at home but is now causing issues when connected to my work WIFI.  Works blocks alternate DNS servers.  My issue is that when I try to clear the openDNS entries in preferences I am unable to.  If I refresh the DHCP connect the DNS will flip to the router supplied DNS entries and my internet will work for a few seconds.  After those few seconds, the openDNS entries replace the router supplied entries. I have looked in a lot of different places and I cannot figure out what is forcing my DNS servers back to openDNS.   Any help would be greatly appreciated. Running 10.10.3

  • Airport Extreme + openDNS

    OpenDNS on the Airport Extreme can be bypassed by entering a different DNS on a computer's network preferences pane, as long as that user has administrator rights. Can anyone tell me if I can force all machines on my network to use the Airport's OpenDNS settings?

    Here is how I solved this problem, maybe this will help you:
    (1) I wanted to continue to use the Airport Extreme and all its integration features (with Maverick/Sever and Radius/Open Directroy and iphones/ipads/airplay for example).
    (2) I wanted to make sure that no matter what the clients put for their preferred DNS, when going out to the internet their DNS ip address were replaced and forced into the OpenDNS servers DNS, without the user even realizing the replacement was taken place.
    (3) I wanted to use OpenDNS to filter what types of sites clients could go to
    Here's what I did ...
    (A) I placed an additional router  between the Internet and the Airport Extreme.  This router would couse doubleNAT for Airport Extreme ... intentionally ... (and you can set Airport Extreme to ignore this warning so the green light comes back, and otherwise has no ill effect on the functionality of the Airport Extreme and its clients)
    (B) This router is really an old access point, a Linksys E4200 that I flashed the firmware with an openware firmware called DD-WRT (search google for this and you'll see lots of old access points supported by this firmware and you can find these old access points for dirt cheap used)
    (C) followed instructions for setting up OpenDNS to be automatically updated by the router, and most importantly added the following two line to the firewall rules, to replace all outgoing DNS requests with the replacement IP Addresses of Open DNS
              iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i br0 -p udp --dport 53 -j DNAT --to $(nvram get lan_ipaddr)
              iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i br0 -p tcp --dport 53 -j DNAT --to $(nvram get lan_ipaddr)
    all this is documented very well if you search for DD-WRT and OpenDNS in google - especially, there is a single page on DD-WRT site with a how-to for this integration.
    now all dns requests on my network are forced through OpenDNS and taking advantage of all the filtering and auto-replacement features of OpenDNS ...
    caveat, the user could still do this to bypass the openDNS resolution ... search the net for a name resolution site, type in the DNS they want to go to , and write the ip address into their network host file on their computer (etc folder) to go to the site without needing DNS to get there.
    but for what i need - the avoidance of Phishing, and casually block all the content i don't want them to use, this works for me ...  if I were worried about this more, I could set the e4200 to log all ip traffic to a computer, and search the domains visited or amounts of data moving around ... but this level of supervision is not needed for my purposes.
    Hope this helps save you some time in figuring out what to do ... good luck

  • Connect me: No connection to the internet detected...

    I just added my connectme device to my LAN.  As advertised the red light turns to a green flashing light.  I can log into the device to begin the the setup.  However, at step 1 of 6 I get the following message "No connection to the internet detected."
    Now I know my Internet connection works, I know the device is reachable on the LAN (it has an IP address and I can ping it as well as start the configuration wizard.
    I suspect that somehow my connect me box is having a problem with my router or with my DNS service (I use open DNS, which is configured on my Linksys.
    Can anlyone tells me what test Connectme does when trying to verify Internet connectivity?  If it is trying to reach a specific domain what is that domain?  If it is blocked I can add it to my whitelist.  I know it is not skype.com because Skype works on my system.
    Thanks in advance.

    As I suspected, this seems to be a conflict with OpenDNS.  The connectme device seems to phone home to a domain that is blocked by OpenDNS (its not skype.com).  However there is no indication as to what this domain might be.  This is a really bad installation routine as it gives the customer no idea as to what is going on and what to do to trouble shoot the problem.  The online FAQ for this problem is also useless!!
    Anyhow, took the unit to  a friend's house (no OpenDNS) set it up in about 3 minutes and then brought it back home where it works fine.  So problem solved even though still don't know which domain to whitelist for the installation routine.
    My unit is at the 1.0.1 firmware.  Waiting to see if/when it updates.  Again no button to initiate the update manually.
    I undertand that companies want to reduce complexity for their customers but this is the wrong way to do it!!  Epic fail on installation.  We will see how it actually works.
    Btw, emailed tech support four or five days ago.  No response - not even an autoresponder.  I know its Christmas but from online posts the vendor support for this product is really poor.
    Anyhow,  if you ever get the "No connection to the internet detected" message during installation and you know that your internet is working AND you are using a web site filtering service like openDNS, try to get the filtering service out of the loop, install and then reanable the filter.
    Hope this helps someone down the road.

  • Please confirm that firefox 2.0 will allow custom network settings (IPv4). A moderator (guigs2) response implied this was the case.

    Custom network settings are not an option in firefox os 1.3. A moderator (guigs2) stated that it would possibly be supplied in 2.0. I use openDNS to filter my child's internet use which require these settings.
    If 2.0 will not have this feature, can I alter the network settings through the host file, and if so how?
    Thank you in advance for your help.

    Thank you for the prompt reply. Basically, opendns replaces the default dns server provided by the isp. This is done by specifying "address only" for the DHCP. Hopefully the attached image will be more helpful than my description!
    The image is of network connection settings in a desktop computer, but android and iphone have similar menus when "modify network" is selected by long pressing the network name in android or by tapping the arrow next to the name on an iphone or ipad. (The image should have the box checked "require IPv4 address...")
    OpenDNS sports 50 million users, 2% of all internet requests, and 1/3 of U.S. schools use openDNS for their security. Thank you for your time and effort to help a concerned parent who wants to avoid google and apple products and support the open source community.

  • OpenDNS and Fios - OpenDNs no longer loads

    I use opendns for the filtering of content they do and for the last week I cannot connect to opendns - page tries to load and after 5 minutes either times out or displays an unformatted page - the opendns "blocked" page also does not load.  As soon as i remove thier nameservers from the router and reboot - all loads fine, of course i am then no longer using opendns nameservers.  OpenDNS has checked on their end and nothing has changed - my machines have not changed either.
    Thoughts and suggestions?
    One thing, with the opendns servers in the router I can access the opendns site as normal using my work pc via VPN.  ???
    Thanx again in advance.

    it may be an issue with your IP address being blocked by OpenDNS. You could call tech support and have them release the IP and get you a new one, or you can turn your router off for 2-4 hours (I'd recommend turning off overnight) and then when you turn it back on, you'll have a new IP and try the OpenDNS again.

  • Snow Leopard can't hold OpenDNS server settings from router

    Since Snow Leopard upgrade (now 10.6.1), my iMac Intel has not been able to hold the DNS server address for OpenDNS that it should be pulling via DHCP off my router (linksys).
    After a while the iMac simply reverts to the DNS server offered by my ISP (roadrunner). I know this because if I mis-enter a URL I get taken to roadrunner's redirection page instead of OpenDNS's the way it should be.
    I can certainly hard-enter the OpenDNS IP addresses in System Preferences/Networking but that kind of defeats the purpose of putting these addresses in the router so they serve every machine on my home LAN. Machines still on Leopard are having no problem pulling the correct DNS server.
    Some looking around suggests this may be a wake-from-sleep problem. Anyone agree? Is Apple aware?

    1. Have you verified by looking in the network settings what dns your mac has, rather than "I know this because if I mis-enter a URL I get taken to roadrunner's redirection page instead of OpenDNS's the way it should be."
    It seems strange that it would lose DNS settings obtained via dhcp, but keep the ip address.
    2. How would it even be getting your isp's dns settings, if not from a dhcp request? Do you have them manually entered?
    If after your mac loses the settings have you tried a renew dhcp lease, and do the correct hns addresses return?
    This bears some further examination. Without more information I would disagree that this is a wake from sleep issue, but more of a network issue.
    If your mac loses its network settings on sleep, it will wake and do a dhcp request. If the linksys is doing its job it will respond with the info you have told it to provide. End of story - there should be no way for your mac to get dns info from elsewhere that occurs to me at this moment.

  • Opendns with wvdial connection

    Halo i've a small problem using wvdial to connect my Huawei e180 to internet, i can connect it without problem and browse the web perfectly but i would like to use the Opendns instead of my provider's one, so i've search a solution and i've found that adding in /etc/wvdial.conf the line Auto DNS = off and also in the file /etc/ppp/peers/wvdial to comment the line usepeerdns but in this way i can't browse nomore. Does anyone has a workly solution? Thanks, Marco

    Don't worry that your router's LAN IP address is still in there as well. Despite appearances, the OpenDNS servers you just entered in your Mac will be accessed first. So your router won't even be asked to handle an address translation unless the two OpenDNS servers can't find it.
    The DNS table in your router itself also won't matter except when the router itself is booting up. From then on your Mac will go directly to OpenDNS, find the translation it needs, and end of story. It won't ask your router, so your router won't go to the servers in its list.

  • Why does Safari Need OpenDNS's IP addresses in order to work?

    Golden Shoes, I did the thing you posted and Safari seems to be working fine, thank you.
    However, I may be ignorant on this matter but I was a bit paranoid about possibly my account info going 'thru' these servers. So I figured, why in Gods name would those IP addy's have anything to do with Safari working or not, considering all the other system specific instructions you gave to fix Safari.
    I just assumed OpenDNS is simply an 'option' to maybe speed up the internet a bit.
    So imagine my surprise when I deleted those DNS addresses (which again, are blank by default) opened up Safari and the dang thing beachballed immediately on me. I put them back in and Safari worked!
    So my big question is.....What The Ffff??? Why does some services ip addresses having ANYTHING to do with whether Safari works or not? I find that, on the face of it, astounding....and KLUDGY, yes?

    Safari does not require OpenDNS servers to work; millions of users use without that and it works perfectly fine for them. It's merely an option to avoid some of the more questionable practices of ISPs, such as intercepting incorrect URL requests with advertising.
    If you removed OpenDNS servers from your preferences and discover problems, something else is going on to cause them; it's not OpenDNS or the lack of it that causes the problem. It could be your ISP having trouble with their servers; issues with your router; a proxy server that doesn't work correctly, etc. It could be any number of things, but without even more details and a crash or hang report, we're just guessing.
    Did you try creating a new user account and testing Safari there to see if you have the same problems in that new account? That would be a useful test.

  • Web searches getting redirected to OpenDNS. Cannot access these websites.

    This problem just started. Every time I try to load a page (in this case Gamefaqs), I get redirected to this search provider called openDNS saying the site is unavailable. It has links to the website and each time I click on it, it redirects me back to that OpenDNS thing.
    I have tried loading the page with the default chrome browser on that phone as well as my laptop using both firefox and chrome and have not experienced that problem. Yet, the problem persists when trying to access the website through firefox mobile.
    I have tried clearing the cache, uninstall and reinstalling, yet the problem isn't resolved. I have done a virus scan, thinking it might be some form of malware that is hijacking my search engine. That all comes back clean.
    I have never heard of OpenDNS, nor have I authorized it to become my search engine. When I go to the search engine settings, it doesn't even show up, yet it manages to keep hijacking my google searches and redirecting me from sites that normally work.
    Please help me.

    Hi SuperRup91:
    As the fantastic jscher2000 wrote:
    "you may have OpenDNS set as your DNS service in your router, or your ISP may be using it."
    And you may not have been aware that OpenDNS was set in your WiFi router.
    Whoever controls the network that your WiFi hooks into can change google searches or anything you browse or in this case change "404 page not found errors" to go to OpenDNS. And there are two place where your network is controlled: i) your wifi router and ii) your ISP.
    Two examples:
    1. Here in Vancouver, Canada where I live, if you connect to a Shaw WiFi hotspot, then Shaw changes your searches by adding Shaw specific stuff. Not a great situation :-) but Shaw does that. (one could argue that this means Shaw is "breaking the internet")
    2. By default Verizon configures the WiFi routers they supply with something called "DNS assistance" which changes DNS and again one could argue that this too "breaks the internet"

    * https://www.verizon.com/support/residential/internet/fiosinternet/troubleshooting/network/questionsone/99147.htm
    Therefore, I recommend you check your WiFi router and see if it has OpenDNS configured. You may have to consult your ISP's technical support to remove OpenDNS; this is most certainly not a Firefox problem; we can't help with WiFi router configuration unfortunately.
    Hope that helps!
    Happy Holidays!
