Opened files are obscured by palettes

When I open any existing file it fills the screen – all the way to the right, behind the palettes. I then have to hide the palettes, pull the resizing handle of the window to the left, shrink the window, restore the palettes, and finally resize the window to fit. I can't find anything about this behaviour in Preferences. Is there a way of changing the default? I have CS4.

I must be missing something, because I cannot find out how to stop an action that seems counterintuitive and, in fact, useless. To recap: I prefer not to use the Application Frame. I have Tools at the left edge of my screen and stacked panels at the right, and my aim is to fit a file window to fill the rest of the screen space. I open a recently opened file and its right edge abuts the right screen edge, behind the the panels, preventing me from using the vertical scroll bar. I move the window in order to see the resize handle; resize the window; move the window to the top left (not attempting to dock it); pull the resize window down and to the right so that the window is in place - that has taken four actions. Close the file and open it - and it's back hidden behind the panels, having failed to remember its previous position. This does not happen on my other Mac.

Please try the following 2 methods:
1.Click to select the Add new documents to Documents on Start Menu check box on the
IE tab of Tweak UI. To do this, follow these steps.
Note To perform the following steps, you must be logged on as a member of the local Administrators group.
In Control Panel, double-click Tweak UI.
Click the IE tab.

Now you need to navigate the following key from left pane
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\POLICIES\EXPLORER
Now you need to select the following key and delete from right pane
NoRecentDocsHistory
Exit your registry editor
Now you need to go open MS office application click on Tools—>Options
Click on General Tab, Check the Recently used file list checkbox and use the designated dropdown to select the desired number of entries and click ok

Workflows are increasing open files in linux

Hi All,
We are facing one major issue when migrating images to DAM. Files are opening exponentially after migrating some 20 to 30k images and server is shutting down.
When we re-start the instance and start migration open files are initially around 2000 suddenly it spikes to 69k with in 5 min and again it is going down. So we cannot even execute the migration after restart also. This env is not in cluster.
When we disable wf and run our piece of code which will create assets and subassets file opening are not going beyond 2100 to 2500 based on this we are assuimg these wf are causing this issue. How can we mitigate this issue. what are the options available to troubleshoot this kind of issue.

Yes Jorg we are running our custom code for migrating assets. Its a service we are calling it in CQ scheduler. We controlled this scheduler such a way that if any workflow instance are in running state it wont start new job. At present by doing this it should not trigeer more than 1000 DAM update asset and 1000 Metadata write back workflows.

[SOLVED] Maximun TCP open connections and Open File Descriptors

Hi,
back when I was using XP I needed to patch a system file to increase max amount of open TCP connections - you surely know about this. I'm wondering how do I do the same in GNU/Linux and if that's real important here.
Also, by default open files are set to 1024, how do I change that? I'm running x86_64 + KDE SC 4.4.2

I mean "open file handler" or in a better GNU/Linux terminology "open file descriptors" aka the maximun number of files that can be accessed at a given time.
For instance, VMWare will need you increase them to 4096 to work properly - and I presume something in the order of 5120 would be ok.
Following The Arch Way, already found the solution and want to share it with all of you fellow n00bs:
1. you need to open for edit /etc/security/limits.conf file with root privileges
2. at the end of the file add:
* soft nofile nn
* hard nofile nn
where nn is the number of open file descriptors you want. I set them to 8196 (probably too high) so for instance it should read:
* soft nofile 8192
* hard nofile 8192
Read the embedded help for a better understanding of this crucial configuration file.

Duplicate entries showing up in "Manage Open Files"

We are seeing an odd phenomenon with file sharing on our Windows Server platform. I'm posting here because I haven't seen anything quite like this in my Google searches.
Off and on, when a user will try to access a file stored on the share of our file server, the file will open in "Read Only" format. Usually this has to do with multiple users having the file open at once, but by the time the user experiencing the
issue would get around to telling me about it, I couldn't find any indication of a conflict in "Share and Storage Management" and they would be able to open the file after I prompt them to try again.
I've done my due diligence by checking for leftover locking files on the share, but have not seen any, so up until this point I've just chocked the issue up to happenstance.
However, I finally managed to catch the problem in the act. A user was showing me something on their computer when the file they tried to open showed up as "Read-only." I opened the share manager on our file server, and saw only that user had opened
the file. I asked them to close the file and try again. They did, and got the "Read-only" version again. I refreshed the view in "Manage Open Files" and saw this:
When the user opened the file, it looks like the file server thought the user opened the file 5 separate times all at once. 4 instances of the open file are marked "Read" while only one is marked "Read, Write."
Has any one seen this behavior before?

Hi DSell,
From the screenshot it is a doc file. So please first check if there is any temp file created in the folder e:\users\nk\documents\signs. This including tmp files and files with no extension.

In response to your reply, I'd like to point out that I already mentioned looking for temp files and didn't find any:

Specifically this means I was on the look out for files matching the open file in the users folder starting with a "~$". In each instance, the temp file was not there. I would
also like to point out again that the file was completely closed, there were no entries of open files in the file manager before the user tried to open the file once. As soon as they tried to open it once, 5 entries of the open file showed up immediately in
the File manager. Very strange.
The user indeed has permission to read and write to the folder. I have not seen the issue occur for non-Office files, but I will report as soon as I see that behavior.

Trouble opening files on networked storage

In our small office we are using a Buffalo Linkstation networked hard drive to store and share files between Macs and PCs. One of our Macs in particular has trouble opening files. Either:
1. The file is invisible
2. The file doesn't open in the correct application by default (for instance, an InDesign file opening in textedit)
3. Only files created on this mac, and not on another, will open, though the files created on other macs are visible and have the same extension (but grey and without the usual icon).
Oddly, when I copy the file onto a USB stick and 'manually' bring it over, it will open fine.
The Mac in question is a Mac Mini (Power PC) running OSX 10.4.8. Other Computers on the network, which don't have the same trouble opening files are:
Mac Mini (Intel) with OSX 10.4.8 and Windows XP via Bootcamp
Power Mac G5 with OSX 19.3.9
iBook with OSX 10.4.
Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop with Windows XP
It seems like a software problem, but the Intel Mac is running the same version of OSX. The troubled Mac seems to drop its connection to the Linkstation much more often than the other computers as well, suggesting possibly a hardware problem?

Could this be an issue with file names?
I've used a linkstation with macs and had huge problems copying files TO the NAS because of bad file names or file names containing illegal characters for the linkstations formatting (Fat32 or whatever).
Make sure that you have files with names up to 32 chars and not more
Make sure you exlcude characters like " [ ] / \ = + : ; " , * |" from your filename
Include a file extension (.indd for an indesign file for example) for all files.
By changing file names and adding extensions as required I have been able to store and recover files from the linkstation.
Try a test file or two. If they work, it could be that that is the problem.

Palettes are empty when I open files in CC

I have a serious problem with Illustrator CC. The layers and colours palettes are empty when I open files. I have had to revert to version CS6 which works fine.

It seems that something is seriously wrong. You may try the following (you may have tried/done some of them already) and see whether it helps (the following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file; 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences):
1) Close down Illy and open again;
2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
4) Move the folder with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy);
Even more seriously, you may:
6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool, and reinstall.

Select one of the files, Choose GetInfo from the Finder's File menu, look for the field named "Open With", and choose Preview from the adjacent menu. Accept that ALL such files will Open with Preview, and your major problems should be solved.
Occasionally, a particularly complex .pdf file or one that needs to be modified and re-written will not work quite right with Preview, but such issues are rare.

OPEN DATA SET to write files in application server folder - some of the files are missing

I'm using OPEN DATASET statement in batch job to write the files in application server. what i'm experiencing is when i schedule the batch job all the files are not writing into the folder.
If i run the report again to write the missed files, the files are writing into the application server folder.
after opening the dataset, i'm closing it. do we need to give any delay between creation of the files? or until the first write operation is done, 2nd one can't start ..how can we achieve this.

Are you using the sy-subrc check after the OPEN DATASET statement.
If not use a sy-subrc check and transfer the contents to file only when the OPEN DATASET returns value sy-subrc = 0.
if sy-subrc is 8 repeat the same loop say for 3 attempts until the OPEN DATASET becomes 0.
DO 3 TIMES. <---- put any number of attempts as you need
OPEN DATASET.
IF sy-subrc = 0.
TRANSFER contents to file.
EXIT.
ENDIF.
ENDDO.
CLOSE DATASET.

And there are literally tens of thousands of sites of which I've not heard, too. Not this one.
It's legit. There are lots of links in Apple Support Communities to the LibreOffice web site, as well as others that are legitimate open-source developers of options to buying MS Office, such as NeoOffice and OpenOffice. I have Open Office installed on one of my older Macs that can't run Office 2011 and it is rock-solid.

What type of file? From what site? What Apps have you downloaded for it?
Perhaps if you provide details of what you are doing we can provide more precise help.

Captivate 5.5 published files are not visible in Fire Fox or open in new window.

When I publish and post Captivate 5.5, the HTML or the swf files do not display in Fire Fox (latest version) without forcing the file to open in a new window (if it displays at all). If it does work, the Flash security blocks the swf on an ugly view until the user clicks.
I thought it was because I have to assign a direct URL to each component, but all of the other Captivate sites I have reviewed have the same issue when viewing in Fire Fox.
IE will display after the active x is authorized (I can live with that).
You Tube and other Flash display properly in Fire Fox, just not Captivate products.
I have disabled off all plugins, modified the protected settings, and everything I could find listed in the Fire Fox help. I have installed a previous version of Flash and Shockwave Player. Short of reinstalling windows, it is not working and that will not help because the published content is not visible on any other machine in the office or at home.
The files are in a Portal, so I cannot share them unless you are in the DoD and have an AKO or DKO account.
However, here is another example of the Captivate not working.

Any of the DAU games, if they display. It is a government site, so they have the standard gov garbage (stuff not working like certificates), but nothing is harmful nor can they do anything to track other than the current session.
It is kind of weird how the content is displayed... It is not an intranet, it goes to a limited access portal. When I store content, it uses an absolute path instead of relative path. Very aggrevating when using many of the tools for non-programmers (like me), and probably more aggrevating for programmers.
Whether I point directly to the .swf or to the generated HTML, the content displays in IE, but not in FF.
It may be a combination of FF and Captivate. FF seems rather flaky in dealing with swf files. There is the consideration for add-ons, but I tried on a newly imaged computer and it still was not working. Even after going through all of the FF steps to get it to work.
Basically we had to create a new HTML file to display the content because the Captivate published files don't work. However, the new HTML does not reference the XML files.
When I publish, I get 5 different files, .swf, .htm, .js, and 2 .xml. When I dig through the code (once again, not a programmer, soo I may be missing something), even round tripping to Flash, I do not see how the .xml files are referenced at all.
These may be different topics, not sure, it came up because I am trying to get a simple solution from the product that can be easily transferred to our production servers and available for Solders to access.

No you will not lose your content reinstalling iTunes.
Do this:
1: Download and run the Registry Cleaner of the free Ccleaner.

4: Reinstall iTunes.
