Opened mail on my mac that I never opened

This may not be the right forum, but hopefully someone can shed some light on this mystery.
Yesterday I was sending an email from my mac mail desktop application and had to search for a file to attach. While I was looking in Finder, I noticed numerous files from my email account that were listed as being opened that day and the previous day. These files were very old emails and I hadn't looked at them in over a year.
Does anyone have any idea why my macbook would register a file being opened when I never had accessed it?

If you are running Mavericks, and the Mac App store says you are up to date, then you have Numbers 3.2 as well as Numbers 2.3. You are getting the "Need a newer version message because your Mac is trying to open the document using Numbers 2.3.
Launch Numbers 3, then open the document from within that app, or right click/control-click the document and choose Open with Numbers 3.x.

You have to download the iPhone version of the app - if there are two different versions and if you do not want to pay for the iPad version.
Look in the App Store for the iPhone version and then try to download that one,

that is a good question, ever since i had my macbook, i was never able to use my mail app, i don't know why but i could not get it connected to my mail. so ive had my computer for 4 to 5 years now and without using that mail app.

okay well they got me to take out some .plist files to see if that would help it didn't. I'm not sure what ones that they deleted for my self maybe someone here would be abel to tell you what ones to take out but didn't work the one that came close to working was this going into keychain and deleting the account(s) then reading them again.
if you are to do this please back up first with Time Machine. You can do this with a usb drive.
Okay so go back to where you had internet accounts and make sure mail is shut. click the - on the account your having problems with then quit system preferences.
Okay so then press cmd and space bar at the same time then type 'keychain access' into the search then click on 'keychain access'
once it is open go to the top of the window and put your email address that you are having problems with.
once you have put in your full email, have a look at what comes up i deleted things in the kind colome with 'internet password' and anything with under name that had smtp.gmail.com or imap.gmail.com so it would look like this, map.gmail.com - internet password.
right click and delete them. make sure not to touch any other files that dont say them things on them.
Once you have done this quit keychain access and then restart the computer, once the computer is restarted go back to system preferences and internet accounts and re-add the account.

A Trojan virus attached to an email that I never opened, but it was in my window as I scrolled through my emails just like the other emails. I don't recall opening it, but if I did I would NEVER open an attachment, not even from people I know, unless I am expecting something! Anyway, my virus scanner caught it, but it did not do anything about it. I ended up finding the folder named "Profile" that contained the virus. I am sure of this. I deleted it, because I could not disinfect or quarantine it for some reason. It apparently deleted my Thunderbird profile, so I cannot log into my email account when I click on Thunderbird desktop shortcut on my Windows screen. Please assist. I am not sure what to do, but I need to access my emails for bills, etc.

Your 'virus scanner' is not supposed to scan your Thunderbird profile folder in the first place.

Not a smart move. With the profile you also deleted all your mail and accounts.

There is no need for this. A malicious attachment won't do any harm to your computer as long as you're not trying to open or run it.

Do you still have the deleted folder in Trash? You can try to login to your account via webmail, and check if there are still any messages on the server.
For the future, create backups of your profile folder on a regular basis.

The guy at the Genius Bar has told you absolute and utter rubbish. It is true that Apple has stopped supporting iWeb, but it definitely DOES NOT mean that your website will stop working any time soon.
They should know that iWeb is an application on your Mac and as long as it is compatible with your OS - it works in Snow Leopard and Lion and will be compatible with the new Mountain Lion out this Summer, then you can still use it to build and maintain websites.
As long as your are not publishing your site to MobileMe, then you are okay - if you are publishing to a local folder and then uploading to another host that is fine and your site will not be going anywhere in a hurry.
You don't need to change software unless you really want to.

When a virus infects a Windows PC one of the first things it does is mine the PC's e-mail address book. It will then send out e-mails containing itself to addresses in the address book using another address from the address book as the sending address.
The only way you can tell where the e-mail comes from is to look at the long headers. In Mac Mail View>Message>Long Headers.
So it probably wasn't sent from your Mac but from a PC who has both your addresses in his mail .

Harm in opening Junk Mail - can they detect that it's been opened?

I looked through the archives and haven't found a topic on this, although it's bound to exist.
I'm new to Mac (1 year) and in MAIL, I'm concerned that by selecting a message that may be junk mail I'll be alerting the spammer that mine's an active account, since I can't set my messages not to auto mark as "read" when using my preview pane view.
Am I in any danger of getting more spam by opening junk mail?

In addition to the links David provided, the Mail.app does not include a read receipt request for sent messages nor does it provide a read receipt without your knowledge when requested by a sender.
So the only way a spammer can determine that your email address is "known good" or valid is by formatting the message with HTML and including images and/or objects that must be rendered from a remote server to be viewed and these are rendered and/or when selecting any links included with a spam message.
If you automatically render HTML and a spam message is automatically marked as junk when received, any included images or objects that must be rendered from a remote server to be viewed will not be rendered as a security feature. You are not protected when doing the same if a spam message is not automatically marked as junk when received and any included images or objects that must be rendered from a remote server to be viewed are rendered which is why you should not automatically render HTML with any email client such as the Mail.app.
Other than not automatically rendering HTML, not selecting any links included with a spam message and not using the bounce feature with spam, there is no other way a spammer can determine that your email address is known good by opening a spam message.

Are you referring to @mac.com, @me.com or @icloud.com emails? Or some other email providers emails?
If the former, it should do that automatically. If the latter, no. iCloud does not (nor is it supposed to) sync non-Apple provided emails.

Pages tells me I need to upgrade to 5.0 to open documents from iCloud. When I go to the mac app store it says pages 5.0 is installed, but Pages says it's running 4.3. I just want to open documents on my mac that were created on my iPad.

You already have got Pages 5.0, but you still have got Pages 4.3, so Pages 4.3 is being opened instead of the newest version, being this the reason why you get a message telling you to update Pages to the most recent version.
If you don't need the old version, open a Finder window, choose Applications in the sidebar and delete the old Pages icon or move it to an external drive. I don't recommend you to do this, as users are complaining about the lack of features of the new version.
Instead, what you can do is to put the new Pages icon in the Dock by dragging it from the Finder window to the Dock, so you can open the new Pages version from the Dock and you can open all your documents with it after opening the application

It’s only fair that if Apple is going to integrate Mail into Mac PCs, it would be nice if the system does it for you like Office or perhaps Outlook. I just don’t to use Outlook although I have it installed and ready to use, but instead use Mail which comes with Mac OS already.

That's a problem that all users of a second-hand Mac released after the OS X Lion launch have. OS X, iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand are registered to the Apple ID the first owner used to register the computer, so you can't use them legally without repurchasing them. Furthermore, there's a bigger problem: you have to get iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand on a DVD, because the App Store makes impossible to purchase these applications on a second-hand Mac.
Nothing will happen if they are already installed, but you won't be able to reinstall and update them, so I recommend you to delete them and buy iLife '11 on a DVD to install the applications from there. Also, take note that you can't also reinstall OS X, so if OS X gets damaged, you will have to take your computer to an Apple Store.
Open  > About this Mac, and tell us the OS X version you have. If you are using OS X Lion, you can upgrade to Mountain Lion with your Apple ID, so then you will be able to reinstall OS X
