Opening a 5.1.1 project with 5.0.4.

Welcome to the forum.
5.1 is not backwardly compatable. You'll need to export your 5.1 project file using XML for it to work in 5.0

You haven't mentioned the exact version of Photoshop you are running. As the always helpful and knowledgeable JJMack told you, new versions of Photoshop do have auto save and recovery when enabled in your Photoshop Preferences.
However, no auto recovery and/or autosave is a match for a defective machine. As suggested by Mr. Cox, you should do a thorough inspection of all your hardware ASAP.

Opening older Premiere project with CS3 - no sequence! Like it was deleted

I am not sure what exact version of Premiere was used but I think it was 6.0 or 6.5. Very simple, few minutes and single time line/sequence.
When this is opened in CS3 it opens the project normally (asks for ".prtl" or title files), shows the Bin with all the files but there is no sequence - no edited content what so ever. The whole thing is gone.
The .prproj file has over 170 XML tags linking the .avi files and the rendered videos. I have tried to create new project with same aspect and PAL and then "import" but it does not give the sequence/time line which is missing.
Any ideas?

You can never, never transfer an installed copy of PSE. It's just too complex and it strews stuff all over your hard drive in places the migration assistant is not programmed to look. Now you will need to download and run this:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
after which you can go around and manually remove all the bits from Applications, the library at the top level of your hard drive>application support>adobe, and your username>library>preferences. Spotlight will not help with this; it's programmed to skip these kinds of files.
Then you can reinstall from scratch. Let us know if you need help finding the library folders.

Encore crashes opening project with 'VideoClip.cpp-275' message. Any fixes?

Encore CS4 seems to be able to create new projects (only tried simple ones), but crashes shortly after opening all my current Encore DVD 2.0 projects with above message. Have searched various forums and lots of people have had similar, but no fixes discussed actually work. Running on Windows 7.32-bit
Have tried the following ideas:
   re-installing CS4 (many times)
   deleting Quicktime
   deleting the transcoded material in the project
   deleting the C;\User\susername\ AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Encore\4.0 folder (and various other versions of this suggestion)
   running as an administrator (although I have full admin rights anyway)
There was also a suggestion from somebody that it was caused by missing assets in the project, but all these projects have gone to completion in 2.0 with a burnt DVD, and haven't changed since, so that's not the case.
Please don't waste my time telling me to get drivers up to date or apply the CS4 patches or anything obvious. Or to upgrade to CS6 - if I switch to Windows 64-bit then I have a whole host of other issues.
As the original discussions on this error message faded away I presume there must be a solution out there?

Bottom line; l there is no guarantee that an Encore project from an earlier version can be opened by a later version. It appears to work sometimes. You may simply have to start over. Or use 2.0.
hence my comment above on 'missing assets', which I can't see being the problem.
We don't know whether Encore is seeing the asset in the location it expects. So I think this can be an issue. I was primarily thinking in terms of the possibility of an issue if you were using dynamic link, rather than an imported file. You didn't say; are you using dynamic link?
as Encore insists (as it opens the project) on immediately transcoding, it!
It is probably indexing or the like, not transcoding. This is a possible sign that it is not finding its cache files. This can be a permissions/drive issue.

This was asked in the context of whether you might be using dynamic link. The update would occur in Premiere. It is not relevant if you are not using dynamic link.

How can open InDesign CC project with CS6 after trial has expired?

Created a project with an InDesign CC trial. Trial expired, would like to continue working on it with my registered CS6 version of InDesign. Problem is that the project will not even open due to a lack of backwards compatibility. In theory I should be able to just open CC and save my project in a format compatible with CS6, problem is that since my trial has expired this is not possible. Completely stuck. Even tried to uninstall and re-install after hearing about a trial restart offered back in January, not working. Any ideas?

That would be great, except for the fact that all of my project files are on one machine. So that would not solve my issue. Unless I am unaware of a way to move my entire project without the original files

Open FCExpress projects with FCP

Hi Mac friends,
I once had FCExpress. Not any more.
I´ve all FCExpress projects and all the media stored on an external FW hard drive.
Can I open this projects now with FCP and save them as new FCP Projects in order to use and preserve this works?
If so, what´s the proper way to do it?

You can open FCE projects with FCP. You will not be able to open the updated projects from FCP on FCE.
Just do a "Save As..." to make a copy.

Can't open motion 4 project with motion 5 !

When I open a Motion 4 project with Motion 5 I get the followwing message : Le document « origine.motn » n’a pas pu être ouvert.
meaning the document can't be open ! Any ideas ?

There is something wrong with the file. Normally Motion 5 can open Motion 4 project files. Open in Motion 4, Save As, try again.

Can I open a new project with 5 or 10 bins already in the browser?

I'm wondering if I have to create and name five to ten bins every time I open a new project. Or is there a way to set FCP preferences to have a certain amount of bins and their names open every new project?

You could however, create a "template" project. If you new the bins were going to be named the exact same thing for every project.
Just create a project, set up your bins and save as "template.fcp" (or whatever the fcp extension is, I can't remember right off hand.) Keep that somewhere you can find it, and then open it up and save it as a new project name anytime you need a project with that set up.
I do this for my projects because there is another editor that I work with that doesn't keep his browser very organized, so it was hard for me to figure out where he put everything when it was my turn to come in and finish the edit. So I created a template that had bins called "Graphics" "Animations" "Music" "Sound efx" "Sequences" etc.
Helps keeps things orderly.

Opening v4 projects with v7

One of my colleagues has recently upgraded to Captivate v7 and she has a lot of her projects created with v4.
Are there any problems / issues if she opens the v4 projects with v7?
I will inform her to keep a copy of the v4 projects before opening them with v7 (just in case) - but are there any problems or other issues she needs to be aware of?

You'll need to throw out any AS2 components because since Cp5 now everything is AS3. This will include AS2 widgets, playbars, skins, animations, etc.
You'll also find that the Quiz Results slide will not function correctly by default (Continue button will disappear) and you'll need to delete it and set it up again once you finally get to Cp7.
There are many RD system variables in earlier versions that are now being phased out in favour of CP equivalents. If your Advanced Actions use the old RD variables, change them over immediately before a future Cp version means they'll stop working entirely.
Be aware that text animations changed significantly from Cp5 onward and some quiz question formats also seem to be suspect. Test everything thoroughly when you are finally in Cp7 and throw away any slides that seem to be malfunctioning for no apparent reason. Rebuild as much as you can in Cp7.

Opening a version 3 project with version 12

I don't seem to be able to open a version 3 PrEl saved project with my new version 12 PrEl. please advise.

The Premiere Elements 3 projects are on Windows. Is Premiere Elements 12 on Windows or Mac?
If Premiere Elements 12 is on Mac, AFM21 has given you your answer, that is, projects/Windows are not capable with program on Mac.
It is often recommended that projects created in one program be completed in that program. There is a marked change from versions 3 to 12.
If only Windows is involved, some of the important questions that come up "Do you have the source media for the version 3 projects and where are they?" "Did you save those version 3 projects in a Trimmed or Copied Folder using the Project Archiver and is that what you are trying to use in 12?"
Please review and let us know more details of your situation, including do you still have version 3 to complete those projects in version 3.

I'm going to throw out a somewhat educated guess and say no. Despite the similar monikers, Premiere Elements and Premiere Pro are two different programs.

Open projects with missing assets

When opening a project, with assets that have been deleted from the computer, the process is rather slow, as DVD Pro checks computer for all the missing assets individually. This is specially irritating when opening old projects with assets deleted, but which are kept for configuration reference.
Is there a way around this, or should I just learn some patience?

You may have to change the way you work/save projects.
You could replace your project assets with "dummy" assets(this keeps the button layouts, etc.) before you save it. That way on the next similar project you do a data replace. Or just enjoy the quality time of "re-linking" and data replace.
The "placehoder or dummy asset" works good for me.
