Opening a ai file in Illustrator, tells me its a pdf

I have a ai file I am trying to open in Illustrator on CS5. When I double click the file I get a "Open PDF" dialog. I cannot seem to find anything on why Illustrator is seeing my ai file at a pdf. Can anyone shed some light on this? Below is a screenshot of the dialog I get when I try to open my ai file.

As mentioned in the other thread, it is rather important whether your document is only the PDF part or retains the full AI contents.
It seems that you have two pages, corresponding to two Artboards, so you may have to rebuild the AI document from two single page/Artboard ones.
Is the original AI document gone?

Opening an EPS file in Illustrator

Hello,
How come Illustrator doesn't honor the BoundingBox comment of an EPS file? Whenever I open an EPS file in Illustrator the page size is always the default size, not the size specified in the BoundingBox line of the file. Is there a setting within Illustrator that will enable this?

Hi Karsten,
The EPS files are for use with LaTeX. Some of the EPS files I have were produced from other applications and are a lot leaner in size than if produced by Illustrator.
Also, when I save an EPS file within Illustrator, I have to open it up in a text editor and remove everything after %%EOF.
Is there a special PostScript code for specifying the page size for use in Illustrator?

Opening cs3 psd file in Illustrator cs3

I am trying to open a psd file in Illustrator cs3. The layers are patially flatened. The paths are lost.
Is this not a basic feature of the suite 3?

How to open Freehand 8 files in Illustrator CS6

You used to be able to open Freehand 8 files in Illustrator CS4 by changing their extension to .eps, but that trick appears to no longer work with CS6. Has anyone figured out a trick with CS6 to get them to open?

What a weird thing to do. It wasn't a "trick" or something at all.

.AI files opening as text files in illustrator.

I created two pieces of work last night, 2/4/15, using Adobe Illustrator and once completed I saved the files and haven't moved them from their original destination. I attempted to open the files today, 2/5/15, and have a pop up saying that it is opening the files as a text document and upon proceeding am met with a blank new document in the size of the file I had saved. A majority of previous files open with no problem and all have the same .ai extension and show the preview. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm not sure what caused this issue and I haven't run into in previously. Thank you.

You may see whether the file size seems right.
You have already tried to create a new document and File>Place the corrupted one to see how much may be rescued that way.
You may also try to open the document with Adobe Acrobat, if it was saved with PDF Compatible file ticked, then save it as PDF and try to open that.

How I prevent the batting linestyle from being lost when opening an Autocad file in Illustrator?

I have worked out how to open Autocad files in Illustrator, but Illustrator does not obviously recognise the batting linestyle I have used for insulation and it only appears as a straight line. Is there any where to preserve the batting line when opening the file in Illustrator?

If a linestyle is not coming over, I would assign a unique color in CAD. This way you can select similar color in Illustrator, and change them easily in Illustrator.

Can't open just created file in illustrator

Hello!
Yesterday I created 4 logos and saved them in AI and today I can't open any of them. Illustrator says it's in know format and can't be open.
This error happens all the time for last 2 month and not only with illustrator, but with photoshop and indesign too. I can't work like this! I can't redo everything all the time.
I use Mac with Yosemite and CC2014.
Can someone help me? I tried restarting, clearing preferences and installing and uninstalling all the apps. illustrator

It is always recommended here to open/save from/to own hard disk, and to copy from/to networks and removable media. You may be lucky, at least for a while, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

Opening postcript (.ps) file in Illustrator CS5

Dear all,
I am trying to open a postcript file (.ps) in Illustrator, and my problem is that I can access only the first page of the postcript file. I would like to see all following pages as well.
The .ps file is generated by a program called Psimpoll (a pollen diagram graphing program), and if I use CorelDraw, I can access all pages, so I know the .ps file contains all the info...

It's strange. Illustrator seems to be the *only* program that can open these files and honour the actual text, everyone else is bluntly ignoring it, replacing it with garbage (random characters), or replacing it with "undefined" glyphs. But Illustrator is *also* the only program that doesn't allow you to get to page 2!
Here is a rather crude solution, which nevertheless *does* work: split up the file into its separate pages, each one with its own Postscript %%Header and %%Trailer. I wrote a Javascript to do so from within Illustrator, and boy! it is slow! but it gets the job done. It's a bit too large to post in-line for comfortable copying, so you can download it from my web site: http://www.jongware.com/binaries/extractPsPages.zip

Does anyone else have trouble opening Autocad dwg files in Illustrator CS4?

When I try to open some .dwg files from Autocad I get the message " Version of this LPF file is not supported" Can anyone help with this? Does the problem lie with the (autocad) sender or with Illustrator? Stumped and needing to get on with work!

Pretty easy ...take the vb reference guide and make the modifications accordingly.
A quick tip would be to press CTRL+W and view the Object Browser after adding a reference to the illustrator Type Library... that will give you a pretty neat look about the illustrator object model in visual studio ... i`m not quite aware if a similar option is available within Mono Initiative's designer.
after that is pretty easy.
(it doesn't really make sense imho importing the namespace as "Application" is used in many other namespaces)
add this to your Form1_Load routine:

I have some artwork im doing for screen printing and a friend has been sending me some artwork to work on. The problem we are having is some of the artwork will open in Illustrator or CorelX4 and stay editable but then he will send me some that when I open in Illustrator it gives me this message and then will not be editable:

Can anyone tell us why this is happening??? I have researched this with no answers so far??? He is using PSD2 and Im usin PSD4 and Illustrator4

Photoshop is capable of saving files that are 16 or 32 bit depth. This has to do with the amount of colors that are accessable. The message you are seeing is telling you that it will convert the file back to 8 bit color space for you. This bit depth is talking about per channel, not over all. So a cmyk file would have 8 bits for cyan, 8 for megenta, 8 for yellow and 8 for black. Having a higher amount of bits per channel, photoshop is then capable of doing things like smoother gradients, retreiving data from raw images to produce an image that shows more highlights and shadows without the clipping and so forth.
Most basic monitors are only 8 bit, same goes for most printers. So unless you need to access the extra color depth, you should be fine in 8 bit. If you don't want to see this message, just tell your friend to send the images at 8 bit.

I can't open an .ai file in Illustrator without a dialog box appearing "Open PDF." I have no idea what I can't open it as an Illustrator file (and not a PDF)

Once I open a page as a PDF, all my layer info is lost. I've tried opening it on two machines and the dialog box continues to appear. Again, it's not a PDF extension.

Since you're sure you saved it back to CS5, the issue might have been caused by saving directly to the server. Illustrator does not particularly like that.
90% of corrupt files are caused by saving directly to the server.
You might try and first copy the file to your harddisk and then open it from there. Opening files directly from the server is an issue as well.

Color error message when opening a photoshop file in Illustrator

I have a photo of the airport, with blue sky etc. I would like to make it all one color as a background image. I want the background of the photo to be light orange wit the building to be darker orange. Is there a way to do that in Illustrator? To try out different colors foreground and background or do I have to do it in Photoshop? How do I fill all the colors in the photo to just the two colors? This photo is untouched.
I also have a photo that has photoshop effects. When I open it in Illustrator I get an error message. It says "the document's embedded color profile does not match the current CMYK working space. The current CMYK color management policy is to discard profiels that do not match the working space.
I have the start of a web page in my working space. With this photo I think I am opening it in a separate page but it won't let me. I probably will use the untouched photo but I'm curious why its giving me the message. My workspace should be in RGB web safe colors. Is that why it won't let me open the CMYK photoshop file? I guess it has non-web safe colors but my thought was to change it to all web safe colors but maybe that is way too hard in Illustrator?

You can color a grayscale tiff in Illustrator by simply selecting it then selecting a color you want.
I would think if these are two spot colors and you really want two different oranges you would want to clip the building either in
Photoshop or Illustrator and place it on top of one another.
I would normally say do a duo tone but that would mix the two colors.
So this is how i would go about it in Illustrator
1. Import the image as a grayscale tiff or import it and convert it to a grayscale by going to Edit>Edit Colors>Convert to Grayscale
2. then select the background color.
3. then copy the image and paste in front Command C and then Command F and select the darker orange color
4. with the pen tool create an a path that is the shape of the building exactly. Make sure it is a closed path.
5. then select the path and the top image the one you paste in front.
6. then go to Object>Clipping Path>Make
7 I would then group the two
with this method you have to good with the pen tool, but that is true of Illustrator in general.
now with the CMYK image it is allowing you to place it but is simply warning you of the conversion taking place.
What you should do is select in your Photoshop and Illustrator color settings to sRGB since this is probably the space you want.
and convert the CMYK into a RGB file which is what you should have done in the first place.
So open it i Photoshop convert to sRGB and replace it in Illustrator.
All should be fine.
