Opening a DNG file locks PSCC and Bridge

Trying to open a DNG or a NEF file causes ACR to lock completely. The only way to quit is to Force Quit. I am a MAC user, Mavericks, long time PSCC user. This problem just occurred. It is not a plug-in conflict.

That is a new one for me to hear.  Since ACR is a plug-in how can you state is is not a plug-in problem?

I'm considering buying CC LR/PS package. My camera is Sony a7 - raw ARW. I've been editing using PSE10 and ver 8.7 of the external Adobe DNG converter. Will I be able to open the DNG files in LR with the edits preserved? Will I be able to open the PSD files in LR with the edits preserved? Any import/catalog etc issues between PSE10 and LR?

Lightroom has no problem reading DNG files. Whether the edits you have done to the DNGs you have originally edited in Photoshop Elements 10 I'm not sure. ACR edits made to DNGs are saved in the DNG file itself, as apposed to a XMP sidecar file, so LR should see those edits. At the worst you will get an exclamation mark in the upper right hand corner of the imported DNGs and clicking on that exclamation mark you will get a dialog box asking you to either import settings from disk or overwrite settings. you would select import settings from disk.

I'm running snow leopard. The try to open any .mov file in Quicktime, and I get an error message that says, "The document xyz.mov could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that Quicktime player understands. I'm a recent upgrade to Snow Leopard.
    Help!
    Thanks, Mark

Unfortunately, the error message gives no details about what codec might be missing or what it needs.
If the file can't be opened in QT, it only means you cannot use the QT "Inspector" window to check what compression formats were used to create the file. It does not mean you can't use the Finder "Information" window to check on the compression formats or use a third party media information window (e.g., like VLC which will open many compression formats not supported natively by QT) to determine what kind of data is included in the MOV wrapper. If the file cannot be opened in any app, it is usually a good sign that the file itself is corrupted.
It's a stupid error message. Apple should do better than that.
Error trapping is quite extensive but there are still many areas which require human oversight. The message is telling you that either the container has a problem (e.g., not properly terminated, non-standard, or corrupted) or that one or more of the compression formats used is not supported by your current codec component configuration or that the data was encoded using non-standard settings or preferences not supported by QT or that the fourCC code does not match the data contained in the file or that there are timecode inconsistencies, etc., etc., etc. In short there are a near infinite number of possible problems for which it would be very difficult/nearly impossible to program error trapping depending on your sourcing of content and how you process it before it reaches the player app. Think of it like trying to play a BD disc in an DVD player.
I'll call Apple support when I get a chance.
Chances are good that they will end up sending you back here. In any case, it is often a good idea to post a sample file for examination by other QT users. At the very least, they should be able to tell you if the sample file will play on other systems which would indicate whether or not the file itself is bad and under the best of circumstances whould allow them to examing the file in detail for various common problems.

A .exe file is a Windows executable. OS X does not run Windows programs. If you need to use .exe files then you will need to install Windows on your Mac:
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows.  The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.  It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • Flash CS6 cant open play SWF files without importing and destroying them, how can I get around this?

Flash CS6 can't open play SWF files without importing and destroying them, how can I get around this?
I'm just trying to preview an swf file in flash like I have with all previous versions.

What if my SWF loads external content from an online server?
Not only does the current flash player prohibit such activity, it doesn't even pop open an error anymore saying there was an error connecting to an online source.
Normally, I would simply drag the SWF into Flash and all connections would go through.  I could see traces, errors, and experience no issues.
Now I can't even do that.  So what then?  You have crippled a fundamental use of the program, but THANK GOD we have that deco brush that nobody asked for.
And for the record, the nature of my work benefits from not necessarily allowing the Flash Player to connect to online content.  The error it pops up?  That's simply another method of error checking that I require.  Updating the Flash Player options is not an option.
Why would you even remove this key feature from Flash anyways?  It's been there for years ... has the ratio of people importing SWFs (a rather useless gesture in an increasing OOP world) really outweighed the people using Flash as a testing environment that much?

  • Can't open .DNG files in Preview and others

I am using Adobe DNG converter OR Lightroom to convert .RW2 from a Panasonic Lumix 3 to .DNG
    This works:
    1. Working with files in LR
    2. Use PanoMaker to create panoramas
    3. Create HDR with Photomagix
    This does not work
    4. Open files with MAC OS X 10.4.11 Preview (Vorscha) even though thumbnails look ok.
It says (in German) that it can not open the file
    5. View files in Houdahgeo - Adding GPS info works
    5. Use Photomagico to creat slide shows - only see thumbnails at the bottom
I also played with the settings in Adobe DNG Converter and LR (Raw 2.4, 4.1, 4.6, 5.4, User...Linear...Not compresse) but it did not help.
I searched multiple forums, found the problem twice mentioned on the side but never resolved. One hinted that its a problem since 10.4.11

    Hi,
    (1) I'd think that if Adobe makes a XYZ to DNG converter for MAC OS X the goal would would that the following can open such a DNG file
            (a) All Adobe Apps ..... it works ....... mission accomplished
             (b) The native DNG viewer in OS X  which is "Preview" .... it does not work!!!
Note: the above works if XYZ is Canons RAW.  If it is coming from a Panasonic LX3 one is out of luck
    (2) I just tried the above with LR 2.6RC and DNG Converter 5.6. Nothing has changed.
Anybody having an idea? work around?
    Christian

  • I just bought a new Canon 50D but can't open my raw files in Adobe CS4 Bridge or Photoshop.

The files show up as CR2 files and I get a message saying "could not complete your request because it is the wrong kind of document.  I run on Windows XP.  I would appreciate your help.

what url?I dont know what you are talking about...
I posted the directions already about an hour ago.
Just for the heck of it: click on HELP and PLUG INS and see if CAMERA RAW is listed.
    * I can almost guarantee its not even listed* but if it is, whatever, don't worry yet*
    Here are the directions again.
download latest plug in for camera raw (go to adobe) go to DOWNLOADS
(go to downloads and it should be the first download they have listed)
    save on desk top
    open
click on the 'file' for Adobe (should be first icon listed)
then you need to put THAT PLUG IN
into your NON 64 bit PS
(it should be listed under programs as Adobe Photo Shop CS4 and Adobe Photshop (64 bit)
    Click on START
    COMPUTER
    C Drive
    Program Files
    common files
    adobe
    plug ins
    CS4
    file formats
    RIGHT CLICK ON PLUG IN
PUT PLUG IN ON DESK TOP *SAVE IT JUST IN CASE*
RIGHT CLICK ON PLUG IN YOU OPENED IN THE ZIP FILE YOU DOWNLOADED ON TO YOUR DESK TOP
DROP NEW PLUG IN IN FILE YOU HAVE OPEN
    CLOSE
    RE OPEN PS 32 BIT
AND YOU SHOULD SEE IT UNDER HELP/PLUG INS / CAMERA RAW
AND YOU WILL BE ABLE TO OPEN YOUR FILES JUST FINE
AND OPEN THEM IN BRIDGE TOO
If it doesn't work, I suggest calling me and I can help you. If you are worried about me having your number just hit *67 and then 1, and then my area code and phone number* I have no alterior motives as I was simply in the same boat you are in now and I am just trying to help.
The download is a simple download, but if you put it in the wrong file, you can REALLY mess up your CS4 capabilites. which is why I specifically wanted to help you and walk you thru it step by step.
I hope I didn't leave anything out. Like I said, easier to tell someone on the phone so I can hear what it is you are looking at on your system so I can walk u thru it  is all.

  • Can't open d90 NEF files in CS3 or bridge. Any ideas?

I have recently upgraded to a Nikon d90 and i can no longer open any NEF files in photoshop or adobe bridge. Any ideas pleAse? Thanks

Hello, according to http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html, the D90 is supported by ACR 4.6 that works with CS3. Is it the version currently installed? (check in about>plug-ins)

  • Opening scanned dng files

I am new to RAW and DNG processing. I am use both film and digital.
    I have CS2 and XPpro
Processing digital from my d200 is no problem using ACR plugin files open directly in Camera Raw.
However I scan my film on a Cannon FS4000US using Vuescan software which has the option to output to RAW in DNG format which I have recently tried. The DNG file is generated however when I open it, it opens directly in Camera Raw but as a negative, i can find no option in camer raw to invert it, i can therefore do very little processing in camera raw as i cannot see properly the result. I have to open it in CS2 and then invert it to see the positive.
    Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks

Is there some particular reason to scan into DNG? I was a regular user of Vuescan until I switched from my FM2 & FE2 to Olympus E, and I scanned from Supra to 16bit TIFs (ProphotoRGB) as positives, and short of the characteristics of scanning film, CS2 offered all the tools I would ever need.
    holdays' cheerios :)

  • Why can I open THIS .dng file, but I can't open THAT .dng file?

I have one folder with .dng files that I can open in CS3 Camera RAW.
I have a second folder with .dng files, that says, "Photoshop does not recognize this type of file," when I try to open them.
Both folders where shot with the same Lumix LX-3 and passed through DNG converter.
    What am I doing wrong?

Because of changes to the DNG spec over time, you must now choose what sort of backwards compatibility you need in the DNG Converter preferences...for Photoshop CS3, you need to select Camera Raw 4.6 as the ACR version. You should also be sure you've properly loaded Camera Raw 4.6 (the last version for CS3) .

  • Preview can't open Adobe DNG files converted in snow leopard

I have been unable under Snow Leopard 10.6 to use either 5.4 or 5.5 adobe dng converter to convert Leica RWL files to DNG files that are readable by Preview or by Aperture. Adobe CS4 can read these DNG files, but then it can read the RWL raw files as well.
However, on my other mac using Leopard 10.5, the converted DNG files ARE readable by Preview and Aperture. Any thoughts or help?
    thanks

The DNG converter is not a plug-in.  You need the Camera Raw update.  That may be your point of confusion.
From this page:  Keeping Photoshop Up-To-Date
Direct download links for Camera Raw ... for Photoshop CS6:
    Camera Raw 8.5 Macintosh
    Camera Raw 8.5 Windows
