Opening a dreamweaver template in Contribute

I am trying to open a template I have created in Dreamweaver
with Contribute to test it out. However, when I try to open the DWT
file in Contribute, it gives me "Contribute cannot edit this type
of file" message. What am I doing wrong?

Yep - can't do dat.

  • Non-Dreamweaver templates for Contribute

Are there any guidelines anywhere for creating the equivalent
of Contribute editable/non-editable templates for sections of HTML
pages which were not created by Dreamweaver; for example,
guidelines on the use of <!-- begineditable--> etc.?

    Ian,
The Dreamweaver template system works from the standpoint of
a "deny all, allow some" mentality.
Initially a Dreamweaver template file allows no editing to
any sections. When modifying the template in Dreamweaver or any
other text editor, the addition of the begin/end editable pairs
enables the editing of any content existing within the tag pair.
If you want to create a template for use with Contribute
outside of Dreamweaver just create the file with any editable
sections you desire then change the file extension to .dwt and
place it in the "Templates" directory on your CPS managed
webserver. Any files in the "Templates" directory that end with
".dwt" will be loaded on the next startup of the Contribute client.
By default the Publisher and Writer roles allow access to all
templates in the "Templates" directory via the Contribute client.
Also, make sure that the "whatever" text mentioned by Murray
is unique to each individual editable region.
Please note that the Contribute/Dreamweaver template
interaction is *not* a run-time template system. Dreamweaver
templates are design-time templates. If you have sections of the
template that change later then those changes will need to be
applied on a page-by-page basis to each page using a given
template. This functionality is automatically handled within the
Macromedia workflow by using Dreamweaver to download the entire
site then having it update all pages that are based on a given
    template.
The piece of the code that denotes which template is assigned
to a given page is as follows:
    <!-- InstanceBegin template="/Templates/level2.dwt"
    codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked="false" -->
with an acompanying closing tag of:
    <!-- InstanceEnd -->
The "InstanceBegin" tag should follow the opening html tag
and the "InstanceEnd" tag should precede the closing html tag.
The important piece of the "InstanceBegin" tag is the value
of the "template" attribute. This needs to be the path to the
specific template file relative to the webroot on the server.
    Hope this helps.

  • Testing dreamweaver templates in contribute

I have a client that wants me to set up a template for
sending mass HTML e-mail that they can edit in contribute. I have
set up the page and template in dreamwever and want to post and
test. Is there any easy way to do this without setting up a full
fledged contribute server. Any help would be great.

How are they going to send the mail, from their own computer
using an emailclient or from a server, using a database and script?
When they use an emailclient like Outlook Express, you could
save the html file based on the template on their computer and make
it available as newsletter in Outlook Express (send it BCC, cause
otherwise eveyone gets all the email addresses).
Your client could edit this file using Contribute (in the
menu go to File, Open, Edit the file in edit mode and save the
    file).

  • Dreamweaver template not updating Contribute pages

Currently I'm trialing Dreamweaver (MX) and Contribute
    (3.11), to check
that it's a workable solution for my company, in terms of
    editing and
auditing, but right now I'm having a problem.
I have some templates (.dwt files) that I create in
    Dreamweaver, for
use with Contribute, i.e. I create the template, other people
    create
the content for our site based on the those templates.
The issue is that when I make a change to the template, I
    would expect
the pages created in Contribute to be refreshed to use the
    new
template, but that doesn't appear to be happening. The only
    way I can
get the page to be updated is to edit the page in Contribute,
    go to the
Format menu and choose 'Template Properties', then hit OK
    again to
close this dialog. I then see the page refresh with the new
    template
    changes.
Am I doing something wrong? I would expect, as I mentioned,
    to have all
pages automatically updated when the template is saved, and
    published.
Is there a setting I need to turn on, or a procedure of
    publishing the
template that I need to adhere to?
    any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply Mark. While I think I've found most of
the things you mentioned since my first post, it is useful to get
confirmation of my finding, which appears to be consistent with
    your post.
Here's what I've found, and later, why I'm not really liking
    it:
If I edit the .dwt file in Dreamweaver and try to save it, I'm
prompted to only update those files I have locally that reference
    the template.
I can only update those local files that are checked out,
though the saving process will check them out automatically
If I create a new page using Contribute, I must refresh the
    templates first
    My concerns are:
if I can only update those files I have locally, then do I need
to have the whole remote site stored locally too? My company site
is huge (as it's translated into 6 languages) and has multiple
contributors/editors. It sounds like I will have to download the
entire site before I edit a template, and put it back again
afterwards. Is that right?? it sounds rediculous, so I'm sure I've
    got it wrong.
if I have the files locally, I must check them out before or
while saving the template. However, I then have to check them back
in manually. Again, with potentially 300 to 400 pages per template,
that's a lot of manual checking-in. If the saving process can
automatically check pages out, can it also automatically check them
    in again??
Like you, Mark, I find it strange that Contribute requires a
manual refreshing of templates. I've searched all the options I can
find, but I don't see an auto-refresh templates setting, which
would be sooo useful. As it stands I will have to instruct each
editor/contributor to refresh before they create a new page, and
    pray that they do.
any further advice from Contribute/Dreamweaver users would be
greatly appreciated. How do users with very large website handle
this? Are there any tricks or hints that you can pass on?

  • Site with templates does not open (Was: dreamweaver cs6 for mac)

I downloaded a site that uses templates and the files do not open properly. I also downloaded a site that does not use templates and all of those files load correctly. What should I do differently for the site using templates?

Some web browsers will not open a .dwt file (.dwt stands for Dreamweaver Template). You can change the associations for files in your operating system, by right (or [control]-) clicking on the file and choosing "Get Info" from the popup dialog window.
Then, in the "Get Info" window, choose "Open With" and pick the application you wish associated with the file.
Also, within Dreamweaver, you can set up what web browsers will preview a file by going to Preferences>Preview in Browser and choosing the browser(s) you want to preview your documents in. You can also pick which browser you wish to have as your primary. That will usually be [option]-[F12] to preview.
If you are working with Macintosh, you ought to download and install the Big Three browsers: Safari (which came with your Mac) Firefox and Google's Chrome.
Microsoft has chosen to quit producing Internet Exploiter for Macintosh, despite the fact that lots of people develop websites on Macintosh (and they whine when their browser is ill-supported). I did find that they're offering something for Macintosh, but it's virtualization and I have not tested it.
You need to test for IE7, 8. 9 and assume 10 is going to be compliant (though it's probably not). The Microsoft solution may not let you test all three.
Since Apple, Mozilla and Google provide automatic updates, you don't need to support old versions of those three browsers. And Nancy O. tends to suggest that ending support for older versions of Microsoft's browser is worth not doing. I, personally have one website that I have decided to not support versions below Internet Exploder 9 and another that uses the same feature is under development.

  • Dreamweaver Templates and Include files

    Hi,
I am using dreamweaver templates so that my users can create
new pages on our Intranet using Contribute.
When I create a template and try and use an inculde file for
the menu systems I get an error. I am trying to use the following
code to inculde the asp file:
    <!--#include file="/includes/menu.asp" -->
And I get the following error when saving the template:
    Unbalanced body tag
I have checked and I definetly have opening and closing body
tags in the HTML. So I am wondering whether the error is caused by
the fact that the file is a dwt and not as asp.
So, is there anyway of using include files in a dreamweaver
    template?
Thanks in advance for any help.

That's the wrong syntax for a file include. It should be
    either of these -
    <!--#include virtual="/includes/menu.asp" -->
    or
    <!--#include file="includes/menu.asp" -->

  • Applying Behaviours To Templates For COntribute

    Hi,
I'm trying to adapt a page so a client can attach the open
browser window behaviour in Contribute. Is it possible to attach
this behaviour in Contribute itself ? If not can anyone think of
workaround in Dreamweaver ? Bear in mind that this needs to be as
close to foolproof as is possible !
I have figured out a way to insert a div into an editable
region and then attach the behaviour to the div tag, but that
doesn't make the link immediately apparent. Is there a simpler
    workaround to this ?
    Thanks
    Simon

I would never attach event handlers to <div> tags, or
    anything other than
<a> tags, for what it's worth....
As for allowing clients to add OBW-type behaviors in
    Contribute, I'm not
sure how you could do this. Sorry.

  • Flash banner in a Dreamweaver Template

    Hi all,
I am using one of the provided Dreamweaver Templates (CSS).
All is fine, except that for some reason it does not like Flash
imports. I can alter the template as much as I like and it will
always successfully change across the site, BUT if I try to insert
a Flash movie/banner into the template - then it does not appear of
ANY of the site files. The only way I can see the flash banner, is
if I open the template.php file in a browser - then you can see
that it is in fact there and working - but for some reason the
other pages refuse to acknolwegde it. Images / Tables / Text - all
work fine - just not flash banners. I even tried saving the banner
as a JPG file in Flash, then sticking the JPG file in the template
where the banner should - and it worked perfectly, but as a .swf
    extension it fails.
    Am I missing something?
    Nathan

    > BUT if I try to insert a Flash movie/banner into the
    template - then it
    > does not appear of ANY of the site files.
Because of the active content .js fix, when you insert a .swf
    file into a
template, you must use a Site Root relative path for it.
    Open the .dwt template file.
Double-click on the .swf in design view- the "browse to file"
    dialog box
should come up showing the currently selected file.
look in the bottom of that dialog box for the pulldown to
    change from
document relative path to site root relative path. Change it
    to site root.
click okay and save the file, and let changes propagate.
does it show in the child files now?
[note- It may still not show during local preview because
    site root relative
paths in javascript will not make any sense during local
    preview- they
should work fine on the remote host if the site has it's own
    domain name
    though]

  • NEW! Free Dreamweaver templates WITH Fireworks vector files

I just released some free Dreamweaver templates that include
not only the Dreamweaver template dwt file, but also the original
pre-sliced Fireworks file with all the template graphics.
The templates include the dwt, Fireworks file, pure CSS
menus, are AdSense-ready, XHTML 1.0 valid and are very customizable
through both the Fireworks file and the CSS.
If you use one, let me know so I can get a screenshot and
post a link to your site showing how the templates have been
    customized by various designers.
    Cheers!

  • DreamWeaver Template change not updating children webpages?

    Hi Group,
Sorry for my newbie question here.
I loaded an HTML webpage, and saved it out as a DreamWeaver Template file.
I then created webpages from the template file (( File - New - Page From Template - Site - Template), and made sure that the "Update Page when Template Changes" check box was selected/checked.
I then created several chldren webpages, and saved them as .html files.
I decided to change the navbar system - part of the uneditiabel region in the template - by opening the template file and edit-ing that file, and then saving it as the same DreamWeaver template file.
However, the webpages did Not Update to reflect the navbar changes in the template fle !??!???
Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
I believe it is something that I'm doing incorrectly with DreamWeaver ..
Here is the HTML if anyone is interested.

    Additional Info:
No -I haven't been able to get the DW Template feature to work on other sites - this is my first application of it to a website (actually it's the whole reason for getting DreamWeaver... I know it works, I know that I'm doing something wrong.. I just don't know what it is...)
All the .HTML files (index.html, cad.html, cam.html, etc. etc.)  are in the website's root directory.
The Template file is in its own sub-directory folder named "Templates".
Right now even the .css file is in the root directory....
Thank You for trying to help me -  I greatly appreciate it.

  • Dreamweaver template-update overwrites content

Currently I'm using the Adobe CS4 Web Premium Suite on a Mac. I've been using Dreamweaver for a very long time but just recently I started to build templates for Contribute and it's been working fine, however, I need help resolving an issue.
After designing the template, setting the Editable Regions and saving it as a template in Dreamweaver, I upload it to production and can edit the page with contribute successfully. However, when I update non-editable regions on the template, overwite the files using that template and publish those files to production, it overwrites any content updates the user makes via Contribute.
Am I missing a step? Any suggestions why this is happening?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you!

    Yes Bryant I did,
I finally figured out that when using: "Save as Template..." (from the File menu), Dreamweaver  was creating the file with two extensions: .dwt & .cfm...
However, it should only have one extension, and that's: .dwt (DreamWeaverTemplate). This way both Dreamweaver & Contribute treat it as a template file rather than regular Coldfusion.
    This should fix the issue.

  • Cannot open in Dreamweaver, to edit maybe because of this line " ?php defined('SYSPATH') or die('No direct access allowed.');"

Because of  this line "<?php defined('SYSPATH') or die('No direct access allowed.');" at the onset of my php script I can not open my site in dreamweaver. How do I define the "syspath" for dreamweaver so it can be opened?
Please assist me if possible to open my site in dreamweaver. I contacted tech support who were unable to assist me and referred me to the forums. If anyone know how to resolve this please let me know. Thanks

Now that I have found the "index.php" file and uploaded it to wamp/www, I am not quite sure how to proceed to successfully integrate it in my localserver files for use in dreamweaver.   For quick reference the syspath definition is:
// Define the absolute paths for configured directories
    define('APPPATH', realpath($application).DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR);
    define('KOMODPATH', realpath($komodules).DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR);
    define('MODPATH', realpath($modules).DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR);
    define('COMMONPATH', realpath($common).DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR);
    define('SYSPATH', realpath($system).DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR);
    Please advise. Thank you.
Below I have pasted the full "index.php" script.

  • Dreamweaver template / having trouble seeing the previews

I am designing a website, using Dreamweaver for the first
time, and I would like to ask your advice.
Do you know how to apply a dreamweaver template to other html
pages. I have having trouble seeing the previews in the local
browser. For examples, when I preview an html page, that has the
template included, I see the page OK. But when I click to go to
another page with the sample template, the new page shows up, but
    without the template design included.

Answered mutliple times on the DW forum.

  • Dreamweaver template files updating, but javascript/jquery not being called on random pages.

    Hello,
I have been tasked with updating the navigation on a site that is using a Dreamweaver template (DWT) as the base file. The navigation was originally built using jQuery navigation UI, however this did not address all of our needs and I have updated it with another version of an accordion.
The .dwt file only is only controlling the navigation and the head of the site.
I have integrated the new xhtml structure and added/removed javascript/jquery into the .dwt file. I saved the file, therefore updating all of the relevant .html files, and verified that the accordion works.
However - the accordion does not work for all of the xhtml files. Some files, seemingly at random, are not pulling in the javascript.
When opening the relevant .html files, I can verify that they have all been updated with the new xhtml and the correct javasctipt. However, when viewing the .html files that are not displaying correctly with FireBug, I can see that none of the jquery/javascript is being applied to the navigation (classes are missing that are injected into the xhtml, but the structure and css is correct).
I've done some research and the only issues I've been able to find are related to .xhtml files not being updated with the correct code, but in my case all of the affected files have the correct xhtml and scripts in the head.
Does anyone have any light to shed on this subject? I am quite puzzled.

While I understand that looking at code is the ultimate way to find a solution, the intent of my question was not "how do i fix this" or "what is wrong with my code" but rather "does anyone have any idea as to why this would be happening". Or even, "where would you start to troubleshoot this".
I made my question general as such because I intended on trying to troubleshoot on my own in order to better understand the issue.
Thank you for stating the obvious, not all first time forum posters are completely unaware of how to ask questions properly.

  • Dreamweaver TEmplate

I created a webpage using the dreamweaver template when I
open it in the browser in a maximize screen its perfect but when I
adjust the size the content on the middle 'div' is going to the
bottom at the page. How can I do it like if I resize the page The
contents will not be affected? Thanks!!

    > Of course the image in the middle
    > Section which is 3 inches wide will not fit. Right?
That's correct, although inches mean nothing on the screen of
    a variety of
users. Pixels would be the more consistent and proper unit of
    measure.
    > In regards with the css, java, html,
It's javascript, not Java. The two are completely different
    things.
    > why did you say it?s advanced?
The layout method used on the page is a bit arcane and unlike
    other 2/3
    column layouts I have seen.
    > I know that it?s just to make a template command
    > so that you can edit a certain section by using css
    > style sheets right?
Hmmm - I don't understand what you are saying. CSS would have
    nothing to do
with whether or not you can edit a section.
    > But isn?t dreamweaver will make the code for you?
DW will not prevent you from making a mess of those pages,
    even though It's
doing what you are telling it to.
    > What kinds of difficulties or problems do you think
    > that I will have in the future?
    Go here -
    http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search?q=+group:macromedia.dreamweaver
Search this forum for "HALO" or "CSS template". You will have
    all of those
    problems, perhaps.
Look - I don't want to discourage you from using this as an
    ACADEMIC
exercise, but I don't think it's a good choice for any
    commercial entity.
There are much better free/commercial choices you can make -

    http://www.projectseven.com/
This is two of the best, in my opinion.
