Opening a file in a particular encoding
Hi,
Is there any way that given a file we can choose to open it using a particular encoding (without having to read all the contents and write it to another stream/file) ??
I know that we can use the file.encoding property but that's more global at the jvm level and I was looking to isolate the encoding only to opening a particular file...basically I am having some trouble running some code on Windows Vs Solaris where things work correctly on windows (I think the encoding its using is Cp1252) while they dont on Solaris (here I think the default encoding is ASCII).
Well, I'm not sure it has to do with these control characters...as mentioned I found that the system emcoding for Windows was Cp1252 Vs ASCII for Solaris. Now when I used -Dfile.encoding=ISO-8859-1, I was able to correctly extract certain latin extended characters -- my question pertains to being able to open a file using a particular encoding (like what is acheived by the file.encoding property) without it being as global as a jvm property that potentially affects a lot more than my functionality.
Can we open a file or create an input stream in a particular encoding specified at runtime (without having to read in the entire stream and then convert).
Thanks !

Can't open Pages files when a particular user has saved them
Can anyone help with this topic: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2288596
We have one user whose Pages files nobody else can open, edit or copy when he saves them to our server. Somehow the files are not inheriting the correct permissions.I got the same issue but with some new insight.
I got a MacPro with 10.5.8 server on it to serve 8 users on 10.5 and 10.6. The root sharepoint is nest within a folder on a separated volume from the OS. I made a pretty simple permissions structure at first, all users is member of a group, and I giving full access to that group thru ACL and set the heritance to everything.
When I copie a new file on the server from the finder, everything is OK. But when I created a new documents on the server by saving it from a another software (Like pages or Textedit). The new file doesnt inherite the ACL and everybody else beside the users who created that new files is read only.
According to my tests, the ACL appear to be propagate on new file only from finder manipulation. -
How do I open a PDF file at a particular book mark
Is it possible to create a hyperlink (shortcut) in a program, such as excel or word, that when clicked would open a PDF file in adobe (pro in my case) and open that file at a particular bookmark in that file.
I couldn't find anything in the help file or here (I admit I only briefly looked).
I'm not sure if there would be some kind of command line option that pass a bookmark on to adobe so it would go to that bookmark when the file was opened.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, StanStan,
There is a thread on using named destinations - see http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3bc5423d/32, "Linking to within a PDF using named destinations." Many issues and tips are discussed in that thread. Included is a mention of a product that is supposed to convert to convert bookmarks to named destinations automatically. --GMc -
Premiere Pro CC does not open MOD files correctly
Hi,
I just started using the Adobe Creative Cloud as a trial, in particular the Premiere Pro CC software, since it might be relevant, I am working on a mac (completely updated as of yesterday).
I have a JVC GZ-MG505 camcorder. This device saves the video files on an internal HDD in a file format called MOD. From what I have been able to see when searching on the web, this should be nothing more than a MPEG-2 file.
So, I tried importing some video files into Premiere Pro and to my surprise, I noticed that a whole strip on the right hand side of the image is missing. The original is recorded in a widescreen (16:9) format with 720x576 pixels and Premiere Pro gives me a file with 540x576 pixels. I have tried using the Interpret Footage to change this, but it doesn't let me change the number of pixels. I also tried opening the files in Adobe Media Encoder and I have exactly the same results as in Premiere Pro. However, opening the files in VLC or mPlayer they come out exactly as expected with all the pixels there. Has anyone come accross this problem before or can anyone help me with solving this?
I could try reencoding the files with VLC, but the output file is much smaller than the input file, so I am afraid I am loosing some definition.
So, just to restate my problem, the adobe products open my MOD files without complaining, but for some reason they loose a strip 180 pixels wide on the right hand side of the image.
CheersPremiere Pro CC does not open MOD files correctly
That is correct: there is a bug in CC. In CS6 they work correctly.
Please file a bug report.

Photoshop CS5 crashes when opening EPS file
I am having trouble opening an EPS file in Photoshop CS5. Previously, PS wasn't opening at all, but I cleaned up my fonts and I can now open some files. This particular EPS file, however, causes the application to crash every time. I recently had similar trouble with Firefox and Flash and have since upgraded to 10.7. Any thoughts? Crash report below:

I previously had many, many older fonts running. Right now, I only have the system fonts + a handful of newer favorites active. That resolved my problems with opening my apps, including Photoshop.
I tried opening another EPS file (both of these are from Illustrator and never gave me any problems before) and Photoshop crashed again.
Finally, I took a closer look at one font that kept popping up in the error reports, Garamond Premier Pro. I mistakenly assumed this was a system or Adobe font, but deleting it seems to have resolved the issue. -
I remember back in Firefox 3.6 you could go into about:config and reset the automatic setting for downloads, but that particular option has either been renamed or isn't there anymore.
Go to the Firefox/'''Tools''' menu, click on '''Options''' and go to the''' Applications''' panel where you can change the action for different content types, to "Save File" or "Always ask" instead of opening the file in a particular application or plugin. See [[Managing file types]].

I have created an Access 2003 Form. Data is entered. The data can be viewed once entered in the same form format, with one addition. The addition is a link to another program where we store files. The files stored are pdf documents. Each document is a scanned file (500+ pages). The link can open-up the pdf file. I want the link to open-up the pdf file to a particular page. I will supply the page number from the database.
I am aware of Adobe Acrobat 7.0 PDF Open Parameters using a URL that specifies the file to be opened plus actions to be performed once the file is openend (i.e. http://example.org/doc.pdf#page=3). However, the 3rd party program transfers a file from a server to the client via java. The file does not go via a web browser. The java code transfer the file directly from the file server to the the client.
Any idea how to accomplish the task of viewing a particular page with the process flow described?
I am using Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional. So you are reading this file in a standalone version of Acrobat? If so then use the PDF Open Parameters /a option via the command line.
Sabian
Example:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Acrobat>Acrobat.exe /A "zoom=1000=OpenActions" "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Acrobat\SimpleSubmit.pdf"
Where:
Path to Acrobat: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Acrobat>Acrobat.exe
Note: The example starts in the Acrobat application directory
Switch: /A
Parameter Syntax: "zoom=1000=OpenActions"
Path to file: "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Acrobat\SimpleSubmit.pdf"
Note: The quotes are very important for the syntax to work appropriately. -

Adobe Media Encoder crashes when I open a file
Adobe Media Encoder crashes when I browse to open a file.
I have a Creative Cloud subscription.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program through the Creative Cloud service. No change. Thanks for responding.
Yes, I am trying to utilize Photoshop CS (8.0) and I run Windows 7.1. I installed this from Adobe's Creative Cloud. The program opens, and I am able to open a Photoshop file with it, but then Windows tells me that there is a problem and is shutting down. I'm not sure would the problem might be. -

Delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.
See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem

Opening a swf file at a particular scene
I'm creating an interactive will have a button that I want to
open another swf file at a particular scene. Specifically, I want
to have 2 parallel files that have multiple scenes - I want to be
able to go to that same scene from the other file and back using a
button.
Any direction would be much appreciated!I open image in CC 2014 in floating windows and find Photoshop floating windows are all about the same size depend on the image zide. So different RAW sensor pixel counts open at different zoom percent windows are around the same size for my 4, 5, 8 and 16 MP raw images. You could also set up a script open document event handler to use menu View fit on screen to increase the floating window size. Without doing anything my 16MP image open at 25% zoom. 8mp image open at 33.3% zoom. 4MP open at 50% zoom and 5MP at 33.3% window is smaller then the others the 50% zoom on the 4MP the largest the 8MP and 16MP about the same size 16MP a little larger the th 8mp different zoom.
I have see other write about having your issue. If it bothers you look at Photoshop Script event manager. Menu File>Scripts>Script Event manager -
Can't open AEP file, crashes AE 6 with error messages...
I've been rendering a 3D scene for a few weeks and got all the final frames finished on Thanksgiving. I've been composing them all weekend and one particular file I had all put together and then saved it and closed it and tried to open it Adobe Media Encoder to make a final video to send off to the client. Encoder repeatedly would hang at 100% opening the file, so I decided to open up AE again to see what was up and sure enought the file itself wouldnt open anymore. I get the error message [After Effects error: crash occurred while envoking effect plug-in "Auto Level"] and then [After Effects error: Crash in progress. Last logged message was:<3376> <Dynamic Link> <5> C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro CS6\Adobe Premiere Pro.exe]. Then it crashes completely and asks if I want to save the file. Of course the resulting saved file is only a fraction of the oriiginal file size and doesnt open either. I tried emptying the cache files and turning on caps lock, tried to import the file into a new project and even place it on the Premiere timeline. No dice, nothing I know seems to work. I'd really rather not have to redo the 10+ hours I spent composing all those layers and re-adding back all the effects work. I can see all my compositions in the background while its crashing (which just pains me). Any way I could get my file back into a useable state?? Wouldn't care if I needed to re-do some of it, but deadline is approaching fast and I just can't be spending all the time to redo this one scene.
I'm on a 6core i7 PC, Win7 64bit OS with 32Gb of Ram and an Nvidia 670GTX 2Gb video card , 2 internal SSDs set as RAID for the boot drive. Of course this is all in After Effects CS6 from the master collection. Everything is latest driver as of 4 weeks ago when I started all of this (brand new machine!). I am composing 16bit PNG image sequences, and adding standard color corrections and image tuning, as well as a pass in Red Giant Looks, Re:visions Reel Smart Motion Blur and Video CoPilots Optical Flares. What Dave said. MP is hopelessly overrated. Sometimes it works splendidly on simple projects, most of the time not so much when you throw halfway complex stuff at it. In your case it would have been quietly disabled behind your back, anyways (read this for reference: After Effects Help | Memory and storage), but with AE anything is possible. I suspect that a conflict between hardware acceleration features for another effect or footage decoding made things go boom in your case, but without knowing al lthe details, it's impossible to tell what exactly caused the breakdown.

Quicktime won't open mpg files
I am trying to create a DVD with chapters/scenes from a single .avi file that won't open in Quicktime (nor iDVD nor iMovie). It's the basic QT, not pro. I can convert the .avi file to .mpg (using Burn or other tools), but the resulting file (.mpg) won't open in Quicktime either. Seems if it won't open in Quicktime, it won't open in iDVD or iMovie, where I'd hoped to include chapter markers and menus.
Since this was created by Burn on my Macbook, I'd expect the resulting .mpg file to be readily useable by Qucktime, but it isn't. Can someone first explain why QT won't open the file (VLC will open it), and second what other approach I might use?
Thanks!OK, again, I'm not using the avi file, but the mpg that was created by Burn from the avi file, so I wonder if the original is so "muxed up" as it might seem. No mpg inside of an avi, if I understand you both correctly. The original AVI is thus far MIA though I do think I burned it to a data disc.
Having the original AVI would let see what compression codecs were used to create it, how compressed the video was, see the encoded dimensions/display dimensions if PAR encoded, and give us some idea as to how much visual quality may have been lost in transcoding the AVI to MPG, as well as, save you one level re-compression if you were then able to start your work flow with the original source file. Too bad you can't find it.
"Muxed" in the case of your MPEG2/MP3 MPG file refers to the fact that the audio and video content is broken into blocks of video data which are interspersed with blocks of audio data in a single data stream to provide synchronizarion. QT files, on the other hand, contain up to 99 tracks of audio, video, and/or other forms of data the playback of which are all sybchronized to an external clocking system and is the main reason your MPG file is not natively QT compatible,
To play MPEG-2 content, whether in an elementary or a multiplexed stream, in a QT based application, you must first purchase and install the Apple QT MPEG-2 Playback component ($20). Even then, for any of the unsupported audio compression formats you would need a secondary application like MPEG Streamclip (free) to bridge the spatial to temporal synchronization problem to make it compatible Apple QT-based applications like QT, iMovie, GarageBand, iDVD, etc. So, if you plan to use the MPG file as your source file, you will either have to purchase the MPEG-2 component or use a third-party application work flow.
All that said, I think I'm understanding how to go about this now. Oddly, I do have Perian installed (I think because I once had a similar problem and had hoped it would help) and it's up to date. It does not seem to fix my problems though.
This is why you need to pay attention to the actual codecs used in the AVI file and ensure that you have removed any third-party components which may conflict with the Perian component package as detailed on the support page of the Perian web site.
I'm using this file to try to learn a little about iDVD and iMovie (after all these years of using Macs!), so I had hoped to take these first steps without buying a commercial product. I don't mind spinning my wheels trying different workflows so long as I'm learning and have options. Garageband is an interesting idea as I had no idea it would handle video files. Perhaps Audacity would also do the trick? I don't have any need of creating markers at any particular points in the file, just something to ease the process of moving from one place to another in the video. Markers at an even time interval would be fine, and I'd love to create a menu that allows navigation, though even that isn't crucial.
To learn more about iDVD, use help file, view the tutorials, and visit the iDVD forum. However, before you can do anything in iDVD, you will have to convert your MPEG2/MP3 MPG file to a QT compatible compression format. On my system, I would simply open the MPG file in MPEG Streamclip (which already has the Apple QT MPEG-2 Playback component installed) and convert the MPEG-2 video to AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec) and the MP3 audio to Uncompressed audio. The resulting MOV file will then import to any Apple QT-based edit/conversion application on your computer (assuming the source file and your software is in proper working order).
I may end up trying Toast as I've considered it in the past and my needs aren't very sophisticated. But being largely without work and mostly self-employed these last two years has made me a bit of a miser...
Toast should save you the cost of the MPEG-2 Playabck component but does cost much more than the $20 component. I am still using Titanium Toast 10 Pro but it may be aout time to upgrade to 11. It is a really good general purpose conversion/authoring appliction for all forms of target optical media.
