Opening a file instead of saving

I am using Adobe Acrobat Pro and Adobe Reader to it's most updated version in Firefox.
How in the world do I get a file to open instead of save?

The settings controlling this behavior are within Firefox, not within Reader.
You can find how to view PDF files in Firefox without downloading them in this page at mozilla.org.
To utilize Reader as a plugin, scroll down about halfway on the page, where it has instructions for using a plugin rather than Firefox's built in PDF viewer.

Go to Tools - Options - Applications and enter "pdf" into the filter field. Select the action that you want to associate with PDF files.
In your case select one of the "Use Adobe Acrobat" actions.

Make sure you have the latest Adobe Reader installed for your OS.

Did you try using Preview. If you control click on the PDF on your desktop you can use the "open with" option.

  • FIREFOX OPENS RAR FILES INSTEAD OF DOWNLOAD

I'm using Firefox 21. When I try to click in a rar file link, firefox opens the file instead of download.
I've tried to change in "Tools->Options-> Aplications" the actions taken by the browser depending of file types, but there is no case for rar files and I cannot add it.
    Anyone can help?
    Thanks in advance

This can happen if the server isn't configured properly and sends the file as text/plain.
You should be able to verify this in Tools > Page Info > General
*Press the F10 key or tap the Alt key to bring up the hidden "Menu Bar" temporarily.
In such a case you can't left-click a link, but need to use the right-click context menu and use "Save Link As"

  • Both Firebox and IE open home page instead of saved http html files on HDD

This didn't happen before, only in the last 3 days. Didn't install anything on PC other than Itunes and possibly - automatic updates on Win 7.
The ONLY way to open saved html file is by right-click: Open With -> Choose Default Program -> Firefox.
It doesn't open the file on double click, or on right click: Open With -> Firefox, or right click: Open With -> Choose Default Program -> IE, in all 3 cases it goes to homepage.
There was adware or malware Rollup File Opener that I uninstalled but still see some remains in Troubleshooter.

hello almot09, apparently you still have remnants of this adware in ''firefox > addons > extensions''.
please run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] & [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner] which are specialised in removing browser hijackers.

  • KDE Chrome open file instead of saving

    Dear Everyone!
I have just switched to Chrome on my Arch linux. I use KDE (4.9.3-2), Chrome version is 23.0.1271.95-1. I installed optional dependency kdebase-kdialog as well. If I click on a torrent file it wants to save (same for pdf file, so I guess for this is true for any file). I would like to open the file with qbittorrent not to save it. In firefox there is an option which offers me the ability to decide what to do (open, save...). Surprisingly it works with magnet links (at first it asked what to do "based" on xdg-open). I googled around, one says Chrome file opening is based on xdg-open, here is what I have:
    [x /usr/share/applications]$ xdg-mime query default application/x-bittorrent
    qBittorrent.desktop
This is totally OK with firefox. Could somebody help me out here. Thanks in advance.

ergya wrote:@UnsolvedCypher thanks it works, however it really downloads to a specific folder. Anyway it is definitely better than before but still a bit annoying in case of eg. just wanting to skim trough a pdf or really downloading it...
Well, you could set the download location to /tmp, or if you don't want to do this for every file, you could have it ask you where to download the file to every time. Other than that, I don't think there is a real solution.

  • How do I get my computer to start opening up files instead of opening a pop up window rather than the file?

My computer has started opening up pop up windows that say, "Step 1: Select File, Information Gathered Successfully, Step 2: Click Show Information Button", instead of opening the file I click on. This informaion windown has generated another pop up window that suggests I visit the iTunes store for an app that will open the file. Twice I have purchased apps that the iTunes store said would open the file. Twice the apps have made no difference at all. The apps did not open the file. Even more frustrating than being sold apps that don't work is that the files I'm trying to open are textedit files created with the software on the very computer that is now refusing to open them.
How do I get beyond the pop-ups and open the files I created?
Is it possible to return the apps that iTunes said would work, but did not?

  • I cannot open .msg files I have saved to my external hard drive

Rename your Preview Cache. It is in the same location and has the same name as your Lightroom Catalog.  Rename it to catalogname.lrpreviewold and when Lightroom launches, it will rebuild the Preview Cache.
Does this allow you to open your catalog?

  • ITunes is somehow the default opening acsm files instead of digital editions

So, I am trying to borrow eBooks from the library and download them into Adobe Digital Editions and then transfer them to my Kobo, but it is not so simple. I can download the acsm file, but when I double-click to open it, it tries to open in iTunes instead of Adobe Digital Editions. I can then go to my downloads folder, right-click on it and "open with.." Digital Editions. Is there a way to change this default? On my father's MacBook Air (I have a MacBook Pro), when you double click on the download it automatically opens in Digital Editions. I just want it to work this way on my computer!
Also, I am having issues transferring from Digital Editions to my Kobo - sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't - and I can't figure out why. Any thoughts?

    Mac OS X: Double-Clicking a File Opens the Wrong Application - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2291
=Changing the application used to open all files of a certain kind=
    1) In a Finder window highlight a file of the kind you want to change the application to open that kind of file.
    2) While that file is highlighted, select File > Get Info or press command (apple or propeller icon) + i to get a file information window.
    3) In the lower part of the info window there is an "open with" menu with a list of applications.
    4) If your application is already in the box then it is the default application for opening that kind of file and you don't need to do anything more.  Close the get info window.
    5) If the application showing in the menu is not the one with which you wish to open the file then select a new application. If your application does not appear there then select the "other..." and track down the application (usually in the Applications folder at the main level of the computer).
    6) If you wish to change all files of this type to open with this application in future, make sure the "change all" button is selected.
    7) Close the get info window.

  • Can I use Desktop.getDesktop().open(file) to open a file instead of Applet

    Hi
I was assigned a task in which a file has to be downloaded from a server. Right now, the code was already there which is written using applet. That is file is downloaded to local directory then it will get opened. Why cant I code in the following way.
    1. Reading the file from the server and writing it to a local directory.
    2. Opening the file from that directory using Desktop.getDesktop().open(file)
Since I am a newbie to java i could not understand the difference between these two things.
can anyone please explain me so that i can proceed with the right way.
    Thanks in Advance.

    1. Reading the file from the server and writing it to a local directory.
    2. Opening the file from that directory using Desktop.getDesktop().open(file)This is highly confusing. What you describe is what is apparently implemented in this applet. So what do you want to code differently? And WHERE do you want to run this code? There must be a reason why it is right now an applet. Are you talking about a web environment like servlets/JSPs?

  • Link to open a file instead of downloading it

    Gentlemen,
In my application I have included a file upload/download possibility, according to the How-to. I created a custom table, and put my uploaded files into it.
    It works very well.
However I want to create a link (for example on the file name), which does not offer the possibility to download the previously uploaded file, but OPENS it, with the appropriate application (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).
It is possible to execute this, or the user should download the files first ?
If it is possible, then the changes can be saved to the original file ?
    Thanks for your help.
    Attila

I believe the first question (open instead of save) is a browser preference and is a combination of the mime type (which you supply) and the user's browswer preference.
I don't think you can get the second part without using webDAV or an OCX (AVI ?) control (windows only??)

  • FileReference: Want to force the browser to open a File Instead of Downloading it

    Hello
I am using the FileReferece class for downloading a file. The download() method prompts for saving the file on the file system.
Instead of downloading a file, I want the browser to open it based on  its extension. So if a file is test.xyz, then it should be able to open it using an installed application which understands to handle these files.
Any ideas on how this can be done.
    Any help is appreciated
    thanks

Because you made a layer, and JPEG doesn't support layers.
Turn off the "preserve cropped pixels" option in the crop options, or just flatten your document so you can save it as JPEG.

  • Gnome, Nautilus / Pcman Main menu Opening Find File instead of Home

    Hi there,
I am running two user, mine on Compiz-standalone with Pcman as it's lighter.
The second user is using gnome and therefore need and want to keep using nautilus,
The problem is when trying to open the Home folder from the Gnome main menu, a dialogue box "Find File" is opening instead of the Home folder by Nautilus.
Now after searching the forum, I edited the /usr/share/applications/mime.cache
However this hasn't change the problem, I try restarting the PC for the change to take effect but without success.
Any suggestion on how to resolve this annoying bug?

I am having the same issue, using regular Gnome with Nautilus. I started noticing it after the upgrade to Gnome 2.30. Clicking any of the top section buttons under the Gnome panel's "Places" menu brings up "Find Files" searching inside the folder, instead of Nautilus on the folder. Clicking on "Computer" actually does bring up Nautilus.

  • Adobe reader not open the file immediately after saving it  with Microsoft Office

I have an older version Adobe Reader 9, and worked fine until today. I did the upgrade to Adobe Reader XI (11.0.06).
I have Window´s Office 2010 on my computer. When I save a document on *pdf file, Adobe starts automatically and open the document (Open file after publishing.) After the upgrade, documents are not open automatically and shows the next message:  "There was an error  during initialization. An internal error ocurrred." and  "There was an error opening this document. Access denied.". But if I try manually, files are open. How do I fix this problem.

I'm having a similar issue.  The .pdf files open fine locally, but when I put them up online, they will not open and I get the same error message.  If I download and save the files, they show a 1KB file size instead of 168KB.
Drive space is not an issue (looking at over 225GB of free space on the main drive).
In searching on-line, the main cause I am finding is receiving the file via e-mail and a decoding issue.  This is not the case with these files as they were created on my machine and uploaded using Filezilla to the server.  I'm using Acrobat Pro 7.0 on a windows box running Vista Ultimate.
Any ideas on what would be causing this issue?

  • Downloaded files from Firefox, opens temporary file instead of the new downloaded file?

I have downloaded the same (but updated over time) file from dropbox many time. But when i try to download the updated version, Ecxel opens a temporary file. I know this, because i'm sure the file has been updated since last download, and when i download the file in another browser, i shows the file, with the new changes.
Only Firefox seems to have the problem. How do i force Firefox to use the new download, and not a temporary file?
Firefox is fully updated, and running on Windows 7 64 bit.
