Opening a .fla file
Is it possible to open a fla file when shockwave is installed on your computer? I have a .fla file that I created in flash cs5. But I no longer have the cs5 flash application. What do I need to open this file without the cs5 app?
Shockwave has nothing to do with either Flash or its associated .FLA files. It is the browser plugin for Director-created content.
And to attempt an answer to your question, even with the Flash Player installed (Shockwave Flash) you won't be able to open .FLA files - you need the Flash authoring application

Can't open PC .fla file on Mac
I have searched archived messages and although there have
been posts about this, no one seemed to have any answers. So, I
thought I would ask again. Oh, and please don't laugh!
My company had a web site built back in 1998-1999. The
outside person they hired to do the site created a Flash animation.
I do not know what version was used or for sure what platform (PC
or Mac). I do have the .fla files as well as the .swf files to work
with, but when I try to open them I get this error message.
"This document contains embedded objects that were created
with Microsoft Windows version of Flash. These embedded objects
must be deleted before opening on a Macintosh."
I am trying to open the .fla files using an old Mac version
of Flash 4. (Yes, I said please don't laugh!) My company will not
allow the resources to buy an upgraded version. Can anyone tell me
why I am getting this message? How I can open these files? or
ANYTHING I can do? Thanks for the help.i think your company's lack of resosurces allocated to
software updates has finally caught up with
them :p
The only thing you can do is find flash 4 - install it on a
pc - open the FLA and well...come to
think of it - i have no idea what that error could mean - FLA
files are cross-platform. Original
author must have embeeded windows video files or something -
i cant even remember what flash 4 did
or did not support. Flash 4 didnt have a dependant files
feature (i dont think).
chances are the error is generic and the real issue is that
the file is old and possisbly corrupt. I
dont have flash 4 anymore but you could post the fla to see
if it can opened at all - on PC and/or
MAC - then try downloaded the 30-day trial of flash and
editing it - or search ebay for flash 6 or
even 7 at a cheap cost.

Flash crashes every time I open an fla file
I installed a trial version of Flash CS3. I had a Flash 8
Professional already installed. Every time I tried to open a fla it
crashed, so I uninstalled both versions and reinstalled. I still
have the same problem. I can't open existing fla files or create
new fla files. This is important to my work so I would appreciate
any help.

Problem opening a .fla file
I keep getting the error The application Flash has
unexpectedly quit. It happens when I open any .fla file in Flash
CS3 (Intel-based Mac and Mac OS X 10.4.10). I have been using the
application all of last week without hitch or problem. Suddenly
today it won't let me successfully open anything. Have ran a
software update on the full Adobe Suite. Updates were only
available for the Adobe Version Cue Server.bump

I Can't Open a ".fla" File
I was sent a flash file via email and now I cant open it. My computer is asking for an application to open it. What do I do? It was probably created on a pc. Thanks in advance!
Message was edited by: DJ FROM CALIAn FLA file is a Flash source file that contains all the animation and graphics. To manage this file you should have Macromedia Flash MX 6 or higher installed on your computer.
To open an FLA file in Macromedia Flash editor you should select "File/Open" from the top menu and browse to the location of your FLA file. A simpler way to open your file is just to drag and drop it from your file browser to your Macromedia Flash editor window. Also, if FLA files on your computer are based on the Macromedia Flash software, you can just double click it in your file browser and this file will be opened and ready to use.

Help - can't open a fla. file
I have created a fla file and I was working on it today when
flash crashed and since then every time I open that fla file, flash
crashes again! any ideas? I have been working on this file for more
then a week and I was just about to finish it!!! HELP!Don't mean to sound bad but you should have backed up your
file during the week, also save as new file with V2 at the end of
name just so that if it gets screwed up you always have the other .
In terms of fixing your file, have you tried opening another
fla file and seeing if it is just flash prog that has a problem and
not file. Also if possible can you try opening the fla on another
computer?

Font missing message when opening a fla file
When I open one fla file (tutorial) I am getting a message
Font mapping
the document contains one or more fonts currently unavailable on your sytem, the text will display in the font below
Danmark
What does this mean? How and where to find the missing fonts, i even do not know their names
thxIt means the .fla's author used a font that you don't have installed on your system. If you don't need to edit the file, just choose to use the default substitute and you'll be good to go. If you do need to edit, there are many free font sites where you could possibly find Danmark, otherwise you may need to purchase it.

Getting Error in opening a fla file in flash 8
Hi I use flash 8 to edit my projects, recently I got a website related to music downloads and it was built in flash, now when I try to edit the fla file it opens up in flash 8 but I cannot see the library and when I edit it and make some changes in it it saves but it doesnt work like the original one.
any suggestion would be really helpful.
I think it has something to do with older/newer version of flash ?If it's a flash cs3 fla, then you might have a lot of problem since cs3 has new features that flash8 cant take care of.

Flash CS3 crash when opening a .FLA file on Mac OSX
I'm not sure if I'm the only one having this problem. I've
experienced similar issue with Flash 8 on my Mac OSX. I was
expecting CS3 will fix these but I'm wrong.
The problem is: Flash will randomly crash when I try to open
a FLA source, or when I try to publish the file to a SWF file. It's
not always happening, it's like I'm ok in the morning but crash
everytime I open the file afternoon.
If any one of you had similar issues, please shareIndeed! I actually love my mac. Its a mac book pro that I
have had since October of 2006. I have literally had no issues with
anything since I got it until I installed Flash. 8 crashed every
now and then - but as I work on a piece today using CS3 - it
crashes on average every 15 to 20 minutes. There is no reason this
should be happening. It's completely unacceptable! When you think
about the price tag they put on the new CS3 suite (web premium) -
this software should be folding my effing laundry and making me
margaritas too!
And you are right! I work at a creative agency where we use
macs. Adobe has always made their products better on the mac side.
But this just sucks. They should have held off padding their
pockets until their product was right.
Just another company that forgot what quality is. Good
lookin' out, Adobe! -
MX won't open some .fla files
I have two HDs in my XP system.
Drive 0 was partitioned as C: and D:
Drive 1 was E:
All my .fla files were on E:
Then I repartitioned Drive 0 as C: and reinstalled XP, Flash
MX and all software.
Thus drive E: (where all the .fla files are) is now D:
Now most of those .fla files open fine, but some won't open
and crash Flash MX.
What are the possible reasons that SOME files won't open?
I can only assume that those files are needing resources that
may not be now available. Fonts? Components?
I have seven projects in different folders on the same drive.
Each folder contains numerous progressive saves of each
project as it was developed.
Files of all the projects except one are just fine.
But ALL the files of ONE folder won't open.
I don't see how only that one project's files could have been
corrupted.
More likely that the OS or Application environment is now
somehow different than before -- in a way that doesn't satisfy the
needs of that particular project.
Thanks!Glad you found the answer. I remember I used to have this problem on my Macintosh, but unfortunately I was never able to solve it...

Problems opening Mac .fla files on a PC
Hi,
Sorry in advance not to have fully searched the forums; I'm stuck away from work using crappy Australian 3G wireless....
A work partner is using Flash CS3 on a Mac.
She sends me her .fla files for me to edit which I cannot open.
I'm using Flash CS4 on a PC.
Is there a simple way to fix this problem; it's driving us crazy and really slowing down development. I haven't had this problem before working between PC and Mac formats...
Many thanks in advance,
MezNo special program should be needed. She can just right click on the item and Compress the file to a zip. I just tested it myself from home to work and it is fine. And you should just be able to Right click and extract all.
Since you are having problems with the zips my guess is that it has to do with how the files are getting sent.
You didn't answer my question about file sizes, but I'm guessing that they are way too small. The Mac tracks its files differently than Windows. So sometimes people get two files with the same names -- a small file that doesn't work and a larger one that is the correct file. Or perhaps just the smaller file. That is what I'm guessing is happening.
Make sure that the mac user has "Send Windows Friendly Attachments" selected. It is under the Edit menu I think. Or it can be selected on an attachment by attachment basis in the attaching dialog (assuming that she isn't just dragging and dropping it into the e-mail.)
If that isn't it the only other thing I can think of is that one or the other of you have some kind of accelerator software that is maybe messing up the attachments? -
Can't open flash/fla files (with CS4) - might be version issue
Hi,
I am trying to edit a website for a friend (built with Flash and XML) and i can't seem to get into any of the .Fla files.
I don't know if it is my version of Flash (CS4) or the files and not sure how i could test it. Could also just be a CS5 file hence i can't open it.
Any help or suggestions would be great. Please help i don't know what to do, haha.
Here is an upload of one of the files i am talking about
http://www.2shared.com/file/kb2NKm0i/book-verification.html
I wasn't sure which hosts were allowed so if i messed up please let me know.
Thanks
AsherHi Asher,
You cannot open a file which is saved in future version such as CS5 version in Flash CS4 .This is as designed .
If you need to open a CS5 file in CS4 , You need to save the file as CS4 file and then open in Flash CS4 .
Thanks
Sukhbir
Flash Authoring -
Hi,
I have an fla file from about 2001 that I'm trying to open, but it crashes Flash CS4 through Flash CS5.5.
Is there a way to open something this old?
thanks,
Davethere are quite a few people still using as1. anyone adding code to an object (eg, on(release){...}) is using as1.
and those fla files can be opened with new versions of flash. (publishing a swf for a newer flash player and having it run, as originally intended, is often problematic.) -
Why is Flash not allowing me to open an FLA file?
I created an FLA file through Adobe Flash CS4. My problem is, I compressed the file as a .sitx and put it on my server, so that I can use it on another machine. However, on a different machine, using the same version of Flash, it will not open. Flash says:
Failed to open document (FIle Path)
The SWF file can be opened through Flash, just not the FLA. Any ideas?did you unpackage the .sitx, or open the fla from out of it?

Flash crashed and now I cannot open my fla file.
I was working on a final project for school and Flash tried to auto save. It said it couldn't auto save and asked me to save a different way. When I clicked file to save as to the desktop it just crashed. I had made one change at this point and didn't care if I lost progress, but when I went to open the file it said it couldn't be opened.
I need to recover this file because I only have a much earlier version saved on my computer at home and this project is due in a week. Please help me!! I am using CS6 btw on a mac if it makes a difference. This is a very well known issue. I suggest you look in these existing threads and follow some of their suggestions. Ultimately, unless the repair archive method works, it's probably not able to be recovered. Saving iterations of Flash files is workflow you should get used to (File.fla, File_v2.fla, File_v3.fla, etc).
Try saving your file (once you get some working version) to an XFL file. This is an easier format to manage if you have a repository (SVN, git, etc).
